Memories of times lost 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

An evocative memoir of the author's stay [1953-6] in what's now Northern Cyprus. Much of the landscape was still as he described it when we visited Belle Pais, Famagusta, Kyrenia, and Nicosia, the Tree of Idleness and other sites on our hiking trip to Cyprus in 2001. His adventures in buying and maintaining a house rival those of Peter Mayle's "A Year in Provence"written many years later. The peaceful interludes in the hills are marred by foreshadowing of the political turmoil and tragedies that would engulf Cyprus in the following decades, leading to the departure of Durrell and other foreign nationals. Some of those towns and even cities remain ghost towns to this day. Once hard to find, this book has now been deservedly reissued.

utter loveliness. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I wouldn't want to spoil the thing by saying too much, but it was a very interesting read, aside from being intensely pleasant. There's a certain delicacy, about death, and strife, and the drinking of wine. Durrell is well spoken and well informed: you might think, like I did, that the story of Cyprus isn't politically relevant. But I only thought that because I'm an ignorant American, and because I had yet to read this lovely book.

Editorial Review:

One of a three-part series of Lawrence Durrell's writings. In this volume he explores the island of Cyprus, evoking the sun-drenched landscapes, dazzling light and vivid blue skies of the Aegean.

Champion Work 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

In June, 2006 my wife and I traveled extensively through all parts of Cyprus by rental car and carried 4 recently published guidebooks. Even with Lonely Planet and DK carrying 2006 copyrights, neither could hold a candle to Rough Guide (Sept, 2005). Marc Dubin's work is not simply that of a traveler writing a guidebook, but like an expert presenting an insightful, informative, and balanced work. It added immensely to our enjoyment and understanding of Cyprus. The highlights section for each chapter provided an excellent overview of each region, and for the first time I found the maps to be even better than the ones in Lonely Planet. The background information was outstanding for presenting a fair treatment of this divided island, with many excellent spotlights on pertinent Cypriot topics.

At 552 pages it is over twice the length of Lonely Planet's 272 pages and DK's 216. Thanks to Rough Guide we found many places which were not even mentioned in the other books, like the secluded, abandoned cave hermitage of Palea Enklistra or the beautifully situated Kelefos Venetian-era bridge in the Troodos Mountains. The photos are still not as superb as DK, and for that reason I would also recommend DK Top 10 Cyprus (more useful than DK Cyprus), with excellent lists and photos of the island's highlights. All in all, Rough Guide Cyprus is one of the best guidebooks for any country that you could ever find.

Editorial Review:

The Rough Guide to Cyprus is an indispensable guide to this popular Mediterranean island and this new edition is the most in-depth guide on the market. The author''s recommended hotels, resorts and restaurants represent the best selection for travellers on every budget. There are full details on hiking trails, archeological sites and the island''s famous church frescoes, as well as authoritative features on the island''s rich wildlife, turbulent history and current politics. No other guide covers Cyprus'' history, politics and personalities in as much detail.

Mediocre, below typical DK Eyewitness Travel Guides 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I own about 40 DK Eyewitness Travel Guides and usually take one on my travels to complement a more thoroughly written guidebook like Rough Guide or Lonely Planet. The photos are always excellent, providing a fine visual overview of places. DK Cyprus, though, was perhaps the least useful DK Travel Guide that I have ever used. The descriptions of places were drier than Cyprus' summer weather, and the photos added little to what was in the more compact, less expensive DK Top 10 Cyprus book. Carrying 4 guidebooks (DK, DK Top 10, Lonely Planet, and Rough Guide) for our travels throughout all regions of the island, I soon realized that I could have been perfectly happy if I had only carried Rough Guide and DK Top 10.

Editorial Review:

Recognized the world over by frequent flyers and armchair travelers alike, Eyewitness Travel Guides are the most colorful and comprehensive guides on the market. With beautifully commissioned photographs and spectacular 3-D aerial views revealing the charm of each destination, these amazing travel guides show what others only tell.

Fairly Good 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I used Lonely Planet Cyprus a week after it became available (June 2006) and appreciated its compact size, Highlights section, Itinerary suggestions, up-to-date prices, and organizational format. Having said that, I only used it about 5% of the time while my wife and I drove throughout the entire island. Carrying 3 other guidebooks (Rough Guide, DK, and DK Top 10), I found Lonely Planet to be far too brief in explaining the sites, falling well short of Rough Guide's more insightful and intelligent writing. I used Rough Guide 75% of the time and found that to be much better. Still, if someone only had Lonely Planet, they would have a fairly good tool to get around Cyprus to the main sites. It is only half the size of Rough Guide(272 pages vs. 550), which could be handy for travelers seeking to minimize their load. For in-depth understanding and off-the-beaten track exploration, however, Rough Guide would be the better choice.

Simply the best 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Pocket-sized, interesting and brilliantly illustrated. Packed with a wide range of info, from watersports, eating and family fun to the best of art, history and beauty. So easy to read that it's hard to put down, it enabled me to have the holiday of a lifetime in Cyprus.

Great for what it does 5 out of 5 stars.

Probably no independent traveler would want to have DK Top 10 as their only guidebook when traveling to Cyprus, but it is an excellent complement to a more thoroughly written guidebook like Rough Guide or Lonely Planet. The compact size, innumerable photos, and excellent organization make it a joy to carry, and provide many ideas for photographers who seek the best vantage points for their shots. DK Top 10 Cyprus is a fun book to peruse, simple to read, and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended for anyone going to Cyprus; just don't forget to bring another guidebook like Rough Guide if you plan to do any independent traveling.

Editorial Review:

The Grass Beyond The Door is based on a true story: Lucy Lightfoot was born in the early 19th Century on the Isle of Wight in the south of England. She was well known in her village for her extreme obsession with the 14th century crusader Sir Edward Estur, whose carved effigy lay in St. Olave's Church in the village of Gatscombe.

On June 13, 1831, during the severest storm in the history of the Island, a lightning bolt struck the church shortly after Lucy had been observed going inside. Sir Edward's dagger was shattered, the jewel from its hilt was gone -- and there was not a trace to be found of Lucy Lightfoot. For two years her grieving family searched for her, but she had vanished from the face of the earth. Her disappearance became a local legend, a mystery that would never be solved ... until 34 years later, when a newly discovered 14th century manuscript revealed an incredible story.

This is where The Grass Beyond The Door begins.

Excellent history book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When I borrowed this book from the public library and read it I knew I had to own it. My goal is to visit Cyprus in 2009 and this book has increased my desire to do so. I not only learned of the great history of Cyprus, but also of the world from my favorite periods, The Ptolemic times to the middle ages, to many events in history that I look at today and wonder where that stems from. This book really opened my eyes to how the history of not only Cyprus relates to the rest of the world, but how the world is conjoined together. I love what the author did and I wish every travel book could do the same.

Editorial Review:

A Traveller's History of Cyprus offers a complete and authoritative history of the island's past and also touches on the sensitive present-day issues for both sides of the island.

Although Cyprus is a relatively small island, its position in the East Mediterranean has always given it strategic importance beyond its size. Well-placed for travel from all over the globe with plenty of sunshine throughout the year, Cyprus has become a favored tourist destination. All visitors, whether to the Greek or Turkish side of the island, discover the immensely rich history, which has resulted in so many civilizations making their mark upon its soil.

With a historical gazetteer, chronology of major events, index, bibliography and historical and contemporary maps, this book is an invaluable companion to students or visitors to the island.
