DK Prague Book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I love to travel and found that the DK Eyewitness books are better than Fromers or Fodors. This Prague book was very helpful and made our 5 day stay wonderful (granted, you don't need 5 days in Prague).

Editorial Review:

Prague Metro Map

Prague, like a phoenix rising from the ashes of Communism, has become one of Europe’s most popular destinations, for business and pleasure. The 1100 year old Prague castle watches over the compact medieval center city from its perch high above the city. The cobblestone streets of the Stare Mesto are charming and romantic, flanked by ornate houses from the 14th 17th century. Inside these houses are the offices of entrepreneurs from all over the world who have seized the opportunity of Prague’s growing business climate. Beauty on the outside, business on the inside it makes an intriguing combination. The film industry has capitalized on this using Prague as a backdrop for movies as diverse as Amadeus and Mission Impossible.

The stretch from the district of Prague Castle down to and across the Charles Bridge is an unforgettable walk. With the STREETWISE® Prague Map in hand, make your way from Golden Lane, a row of tiny homes and workshops dating back to the 16th century past Valdstejnská zahrada (the Wallenstein Gardens), baroque gardens tucked behind the high walls of the Wallenstein Palace; and across Charles Bridge built in 1357 and lined with the statues of saints. There are the five other historic districts of Prague: Hradcany, home to the Loreta Church and the Loreta Treasure, sacred objects from the 16th-18th centuries; Mala Strana, the Lesser Town or Small Quarter; Staré Mesto, the old gothic quarter of Old Town; Nove Mesto or New Town; Josefov, the former Jewish ghetto dating back to the 13th century; and Vysehrad, an area of landscaped gardens and castle ruins said to be the seat of Czech Princes in the 11th century. The whole maze of streets connecting the first five districts is best explored on foot. A Prague Metro map, included in our STREETWISE® Prague Map shows the way to Vysehrad.

An evening in Prague is a buffet of lively offerings. Whether you are into tasting a frosty Pilsner beer in a back street café, seeing an opera at the Estates Theatre, where Mozart premiered Don Giovanni in 1787 or relaxing with a classic music concert played in one of the many Baroque churches, Prague will tempt you to remain awake long into the night.

The index of hotels, palaces, churches, restaurants, metro and more on our STREETWISE® Prague Map will insure you are well taken care of while visiting the city.

Our pocket size map of Prague is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use. The STREETWISE® Prague map is one of many detailed and easy-to-read city street maps designed and published by STREETWISE®. Buy your STREETWISE® Prague map today and you too can navigate Prague, Czech Republic like a native. great guide book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I'm preparing to go to Prague, and the first guide book I knew that I would want to have is Rick Steve's guide. He has never let me down when I've gone on a trip. Highly recommended.

Looking forward to Prague 5 out of 5 stars.

Reading this book has helped me understand why Prague has become a top tourist destination. Now I, too, want to explore the architecture, music, food, and history of what sounds like an amazing city. With this book I feel comfortable planning a visit, even without knowing a word of the language. Having used other of Rick Steves' books in the past, I trust him to steer me to enjoyable, safe, and affordable experiences.

As in all of his books, Steves states his approach to travel clearly: he doesn't cover everything, just the "best" places, the best according to him, of course. My tastes and orientation align with his (interesting, moderately priced travel, including as much local immersion as is reasonable), so I rely on his books to provide the wonderful backbones of great trips. For visiting places other than his "best" I use a more comprehensive guide book, like Lonely Planet, in addition to (rather than instead of) his.

Editorial Review:

Since the early Middle Ages, Prague has been considered one of Europe's most beautiful cities with its hundreds of spires reaching into the sky. Despite a history filled with violent upheavals and bitter occupations, Prague remains a vibrant city known for its world-famous architecture, culture, historic monuments, and natural beauty.
Experience the magnificent beauty and often-tragic history of this 'Golden City' through seventy pairs of remarkable photographs.
Stand atop Prague's most familiar monument, the Charles Bridge (completed in 1400), for a magnificent vista of the city; a fascinating inset photo illustrates the destruction of the bridge after a flood in 1890.
Visit Golden Lane, home to the city's goldsmiths in the 17th century and later to author Franz Kafka.
Marvel at then-and-now images of treasures like St. Vitus' Cathedral (it's first stone was laid in 1344 by Emperor Charles IV!) and St. George's Basilica (founded in the 10th century).
Today, Prague is a favorite destination for tourists from all over the world. This is a tour you won't want to miss!

Excellent book for the first-time visitor or resident or anyone between. 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent, well-written book about one of the great cities of the world. Orderly, logical structure for the first-time visitor as well as for those who visit Prague often or live there. Not only a good writer but an accurate, non-revisionist historian. A pleasure to read and to share with others.

Now fully redesigned, this new edition of Cadogan’s unique three-city guide contains the most up-to-the-minute practical information and listings, along with color photographs and maps. Vienna, Prague and Budapest are growing in popularity as city break destinations thanks to their beautiful city centers and increasing number of trendy restaurants and hotels. Prague offers the ultimate romantic getaway with its stunning medieval Old Town, cobbled streets, gothic churches and magnificent castle, the largest ancient castle in the world. The center of Vienna is UNESCO-listed and is a cultural paradise, featuring several excellent museums, the stately Imperial Palace that once served as the residence to the powerful Hapsburg dynasty, and Sigmund Freud’s house. Meanwhile Budapest, a veritable fountain of medicinal waters, is home to dozens of swimming pools and bathing halls dating back to the Turkish Occupation and a wonderful place to relax in a spa after all that sight-seeing and shopping.

Well done 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Lonely Planet Prague provided a great synopsis of the historical sites, with descriptions often better than those provided by our formal tour guides. The detailed information regarding transportation, costs, and hours were right on. Without the book we would have missed some off-the-beaten-path activities. Our only complaint was that some key restaurants were not included but this is the only area which I believe needs to be improved.
