Editorial Review:

In this book, the author of Seven Gothic Tales gives a true account of her life on her plantation in Kenya. She tells with classic simplicity of the ways of the country and the natives: of the beauty of the Ngong Hills and coffee trees in blossom: of her guests, from the Prince of Wales to Knudsen, the old charcoal burner, who visited her: of primitive festivals: of big game that were her near neighbors--lions, rhinos, elephants, zebras, buffaloes--and of Lulu, the little gazelle who came to live with her, unbelievably ladylike and beautiful.

The Random House colophon made its debut in February 1927 on the cover of a little pamphlet called "Announcement Number One." Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer, the company's founders, had acquired the Modern Library from publishers Boni and Liveright two years earlier. One day, their friend the illustrator Rockwell Kent stopped by their office. Cerf later recalled, "Rockwell was sitting at my desk facing Donald, and we were talking about doing a few books on the side, when suddenly I got an inspiration and said, 'I've got the name for our publishing house. We just said we were go-ing to publish a few books on the side at random. Let's call it Random House.' Donald liked the idea, and Rockwell Kent said, 'That's a great name. I'll draw your trademark.' So, sitting at my desk, he took a piece of paper and in five minutes drew Random House, which has been our colophon ever since." Throughout the years, the mission of Random House has remained consistent: to publish books of the highest quality, at random. We are proud to continue this tradition today.

This edition is set from the first American edition of 1937 and commemorates the seventy-fifth anniversary of Random House.

Editorial Review:

Out of Africa is Karin Blixen's love letter to the country she called home for nearly 20 years. Arriving in British East Africa (now Kenya) from Denmark in 1914, Blixen--Isak Dinesen was her pen name--was immediately seduced by the landscape of the Ngong hill country, not to mention the animals and people who inhabited it. Her descriptions bring this wonderland alive for readers: out on safari, she recalls the movements of a group of giraffes, "in their queer, inimitable, vegetative gracefulness, as if it were not a herd of animals but a family of rare, long-stemmed, speckled gigantic flowers slowly advancing." Blixen laces into her reverie the account of her coffee plantation--which ultimately succumbed to high altitude, droughts, and tumbling international coffee prices--and tales of her friendships with other colonials in Nairobi. But one should read her memoir for the stories she tells of cooking with her Kikuyu chef (who almost never ate any of the European delicacies he so expertly created), adopting an abandoned infant antelope, flying over the countryside in her lover's plane--"the greatest, most transporting pleasure of my life on the farm"--and watching the children of her tenant farmers collect at her house each day at noon for the spectacle of her cuckoo clock.

Though some of her references to native Africans will likely make today's readers uncomfortable, Blixen can also be perceptive, particularly in her articulation of the differences between European and African culture and her excitement over what she learns from "her" Africans. It is not long before she is attuned to the rhythms of nature: she can foresee when the rains will come, can spot the new moon before anyone else on the farm, and knows exactly what the silence of night should sound like. Though her sorrow is almost unbearably palpable when at last--after the collapse of the farm, the loss of her lover, and the war looming--Blixen leaves Africa, the reader will close the book richer for her sojourn. --Jordana Moskowitz

Colourful and informative 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am planning a family vacation to Denmark and I wanted to get some information on places other than Legoland. I found the information in this guide very useful.
It is well organized and easy to look up places in the book. For example, the publishers have divided Denmark into a number of regions and these are colour coded. Southern Jutland and Legoland? Look in the yellow section.
It is informative: I learned about Danish history, customs and culture. There is a good overview of Danish design and this is followed up in more detail in the respective entries. The section on Danish history is illustrated with pictures of paintings, sculptures and photos again in full colour.
My only reservation about this book concerns the scrupulous fairness of all the entries. Visitors are looking for information and insight, both good and bad. Is Tivoli really worth the time or is it an overrated tourist trap?
Overall, however, I am happy that I purchased this book over the others.
I did some time consuming searches on the internet for information about Denmark but I should have saved myself the trouble and bought this book first.

tells you everything for your trip to england 4 out of 5 stars.

I have been considering taking a trip to london, so i bought this book for information on england and london included. it is a very through book and loaded with information on where to stay and things to see when there.

Most Comprehensive England Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

It's probably too much to ask any one book to cover all of England in detail. But Frommer's has packed this 800-page monster with all the information they could in an attempt to do just that. Did they succeed? Mostly. For starters, they offer over 20 "Best of" lists that help you zero in on the finest the country has to offer in all sorts of categories ranging from museums to pubs and everything in between. Basic travel information is offered for those completely new to the country to help you start off on the right track. There's even a short offering to help you learn a bit about art and architecture so that you can better appreciate what you will see on your visit. And, of course, there are four suggested itineraries for complete trips. Finally, the remaining 700 pages detailed information on the various geographic areas of England.

Without diminishing the rest of the book, I found the "Best of" lists and the itineraries a great starting point because it helped me zoom in on the part of England that I would most want to visit. From there, I started worrying about the specifics of what I would do there and that's when the rest of the book started to come in handy. But I also purchased The Unofficial Guide to England (Unofficial Guides) and found that I often went back and forth between the two. For information on the Cotswolds, Lake District, and some other aspects of the trip, I found Frommer's to be the most helpful. At the same time, when it came to reviewing the sight-seeing attractions in London I preferred the content and format that the Unofficial Guide used. It's not that Frommer's didn't cover it at all, or that the coverage was poor. But comparing the two, I definitely found the Unofficial Guide easier to use for touring London. Leaving London aside, Frommer's has certainly put together the most comprehensive guide you will find on England. It has every city you could possibly be interested in as well covering the Lake District, the Cotswolds, and other rustic areas of interest to tourists.

In summary, I found the Frommer's Guide to be highly useful and I certainly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to England. I also believe that no one book will have everything when covering a place as diverse as England, so don't limit yourself to just one book.

What you can't see is powerful. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a most excellent read. You will cry and laugh and be in suspense.
It will make you think about things and the important things in life.
Once you start this book you will not lay it down until you have finished.
I highly reccommend not only reading it but giving this out as a gift to all you know.

Unforgettable Story of an Unbelievable Faith 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was first introduced to this book a few years ago by my grandfather. It had been read by many members of the family and finally passed down to me. I have been searching for a copy of this amazing book in English (mine is in Russian, so it takes more effort to read through!) and I finally found it! I have read this book 5 or 6 times and I am always inspired and amazed at Lydia's faith in God, but even more so- by God's faith in people! The simple way that the book is written (and it comes across in any language, I think!) is easy to read and hard to put down. One of the greatest books of all time, and should be a classic!

A must in every Christian library 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book. The book had been around in my house for years and probably belonged to my late sister. I just bypassed it until the day I picked it up to gloss over and couldn't put it down until I had finished reading it. It is a powerful testimony of how God can interact face to face and in detail with a human even in these present times.
It re-iterates that God sees the heart and all you have to do is seek him, seek to know the true God and he will reveal himself to you. This is a book I read every year and I am sorry to say, never lend out because I just cannot afford to lose it. I think the Derek Prince ministry has decided to reprint it though.
This book makes one feel so close to God. It's an effect of both the events in the book as well as the simplicity with which it was written. It is a definite must-have for every Christian .............

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Nifty little guide 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was very helpful in providing a brief overview of the cities I was visiting. However, I like pictures so I can cross reference any of the historical sites I'm seeing.

once again ... Frommer's guide does not dissapoint 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Thorough, Comprehensive and well-put together.

From all the travel books out there on Denmark this one is not a compilation of mere facts, photos, phone numbers and page-fillers.

What sets Frommer's apart is the information provided and the style in which is presented. You will find lodging options for various budgets, a list of most important sites to see and even suggested ways to spend time in a city if you have only 1 day or as much as 5 days, great places to eat and great places to splurge if you can stretch your dollar. Be aware that this is not a book for the ones on a shoestring budget. Frommer provides a good introduction to Denmark without being overloading you with mass amounts of information or pictures, a truly well-balanced book.

The first chapter is entitled "The Best of Denmark" and it contains:
1) Best Danish Experiences
2) The Best Hotels
3) The Best Restaurants
4) The Best Buys
5) The Most Scenic Towns and Villages
6) The Best Active Vacations
7) The Best Castles and Palaces
8) The Best Offbeat experiences
The rest of the 12 chapters, focus on planning for the trip, suggested itineraries for the time you have available, and specifics on the capital, or specific regions and islands. There is a chapter on Bornholm (island) but none on Greenland or the Faroe Islands.

The information I found for the town of Odense (hours and days of operation) were very accurate. Always it is a smart idea to make a call before visiting a place to make reservations or check on restricted hours. The Danes do have a lot of holidays, especially in the first 5 months.

The only accompanying guide besides this one that I would recommend is, "Eyewitness Travel Guides - Denmark" by DK (visual guide). Happy Travels!

Beautiful and clever guide to a beautiful country 5 out of 5 stars.
31 of 33 people found this review helpful.

All too often, Finland has been unfairly treated by many snobbish travel writers - too clean, too expensive, too Northern. For many of those identifying Finland only with mobile phones, the history, the architecture and the landscapes of this brave, spectacularly handsome and exceedingly talented country is largely unknown. This guide tells the story and shows the pictures in a friendly, seemingly effortless and hugely informative way.

The book - in common with other Insight Guide publications - is as beautiful as the cover picture suggests. They do not cut corners on buying top quality photos or commissioning informed articles, and it shows. The writing does not have the cynicism and grumpy attitude of shoestring-travel guidebooks: instead, it offers warmth and genuine attempt to look into the country and its people (not only to list its cheapest accommodation).

Insight Guides is quite laconic about basic survival within the country, but the pages that are there fully fit the task suffice. Moreover, in Finland, where the knowledge of English is practically universal and the system of public information about transport and other facilities is second to none, you do not need too much hand-holding anyway.

This beautiful and informative book is worth every penny.

Editorial Review:

Insight Guide Finland includes a section detailing Finland‘s history, 10 features covering aspects of the type's life and culture, ranging from A Wilderness Experience to Music and film, a region by region visitor's guide to the sights, and a comprehensive Travel Tips section packed with essential contact addresses and numbers. Plus 14 mpas and many high quality photographs.
