Editorial Review:

Make like 'King' Wenceslas and look out from Prague Castle then ponder your own matamorphasis at the Franz Kafka Museum. Go gently on the world's longest-and slowest-trolleybus route from Simferopol to Yalta. Get naked, hot, sweaty, and whipped with birch twigs with the locals in a Moscow banya. Plunge into startlingly clear seas from Albena to Zadar. Thirteen authors, over 38 years combined experience living in Eastern Europe, 4732 hours of on-the-road research. Updated practical information on the entire region and the world's newest country: Montenegro.

Fluent Broad Brush Treatment 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is almost in the unputdownable category, with the additional pleasure of its capacity to be dived into at any chapter, or to be savoured chapter at a time. Mak's personal travels through the countries that now comprise Europe throughout 1999 bring to his research a somewhat mordant contemporary tone to his impressions. I can, from travels this year, certainly confirm the mood he paints of Istanbul, Chatting there with expat Poles, Hungarians, Bulgarians and Romanians only spread the paint wider, not thinner. The book's historical aspect, much of it new to this reader, whatever arguments might be fussed over with the details, are unlikely to be challenged. Much of the regions have received their specific historical treatment by other authors, and Mak acknowledges his readings. But few writers have presented the broad picture with such verve.

Editorial Review:

From the First World War to the waning days of the Cold War, a poignant exploration on what it means to be European at the end of the twentieth-century.

Geert Mak crisscrosses Europe from Verdun to Berlin, Saint Petersburg to Srebrenica in search of evidence and witnesses of the last hundred years of Europe. Using his skills as an acclaimed journalist, Mak locates the smaller, personal stories within the epic arc of history-talking to a former ticket-taker at the gates of the Birkenau concentration camp or noting the neat rows of tiny shoes in the abandoned nursery school in the shadow of Chernobyl. His unique approach makes the reader an eyewitness to a half-forgotten past, full of unknown peculiarities, sudden insights and touching encounters. Sweeping in scale, but intimate in detail In Europe is a masterpiece.

Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel Guide: Sicily (Dorling 4 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

The Eyewitness Travel Guide for Sicily was my 10th in this series. We travel a lot and when we return home to look at our many photos that we have taken, the book is a tremendous help in indentifying these photos.

We also keep a daily diary when we travel and the concise wording in the guide helps add to the documentation and color of our journals.

I have used many guides in the past but the Eyewitness guide for Sicily and other locations is a must!

Not the best 3 out of 5 stars.

The DK Eyewitness guides adhere to the motto, "A picture is worth a thousand words." In a way they're right: there's something about a dramatic picture that can lure you to a place like no number of words can. Yet while pictures and attractive diagrams are important, there's a lot of other critical travel information you just won't find here.

The city maps in this guide are anything but detailed. I challenge you to find your way around Agrigento in the dark, like I had to, with the map in this guide. You need a detailed street map.

This book is also seriously lacking in information about how to get around by bus and train. By contrast, Lonely Planet's guide to Sicily lists, under a special heading ("Getting There & Away"), the number of trains and buses that leave or arrive in a given city daily, how often, where to catch them, and what they cost. There's also another section in the Lonely Planet guide, "Getting Around", which tells you which buses to take inside the cities, where to rent a car or a bike, and so forth. DK's guide leaves you stranded.

The last major defect of this guide is its hotel and hostel recommendations: if you're a budget traveler or a student, this is definitely not the guide for you. Its "Places to Stay" section is almost entirely limited to pricey 3-, 4-, and 5-star hotels: it needs to list less expensive alternatives. Excellent hostels like the Agora Youth Hostel in Catania aren't listed at all. Furthermore, the authors could have put their hotels on the city maps, like Lonely Planet and Rough Guides.

DK's other regional guides are a little more functional than this one, but if you're headed to Sicily, take Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, or Let's Go along with you instead. 3 stars.

Editorial Review:

You can get to Europe, even travel around it, without help. But without a little pre-trip planning, you’ll make mistakes – wasting both time and money. This book won’t tell you where to go, but it will give you the tools to custom design the best possible journey for your time frame and budget. There are some things, such as rail passes, volunteer projects or cooking courses, that need to be booked in advance. This book will explain which things to plan for, which are best done on the fly, and how to do it. It will also help you pack what you need, so you don’t end up carrying around items you never use and give budget tricks and skills so you can save £5 - £15 per day with minimal effort (which can add up to £900 on a two-month trip). Essentially, this book contains the sort of information you could probably figure out on your own after about four or five years on the road. Just seems a little easier to get it in an hour or two.

Prepare for the adventure with The Rough Guide First-Time Europe.

Affectionate Portrait of Provence 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Slowly, I'm working my way through Peter Mayle's books though these books could more rightly be described as his love letters to Provence.

Toujours Provence begins where his first book A Year In Provence ended. Now a seasoned resident of this region of France, he broadens his view to give us an affectionate portrait of the French in all their regional peculiarities.

At once amusing and educational, this book gives the reader the sense of what it would be like to see France as a resident, not a tourist.

I know I've entertained daydreams of living in France of Italy, at least for a summer. Mayle's books make me want to act upon that fantasy.

This book is my perfect choice for bedtime reading. Not because it's boring and makes me sleepy. Not because it's easy to put down when sleep calls. Reading this book is a calm interlude in my busy life. Mayle has a droll humor and a flair for understatement of the incongruous situations that develop. I find myself smiling, and I can feel the stress melting away.

Toujours Provence, like its predecessor A Year In Provence, is the perfect armchair vacation.

Editorial Review:

The sequel to "A Year in Provence". Peter Mayle's love affair with the south of France continues and deepens. Now he's got most of the building work organized, he's had time for a few trips - to the Cannes Film Festival, the Menerbes dog show and the wine caves at Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Indepth Details 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book as a guide, but found it was probably better than any "personal" guide as it is heavily stocked with beautiful pictures, maps, diagrams, and descriptions of castles and other sites.

I like the way the country is sectioned off...by region, etc. At the back of the book are great traveler tips and a list of lodging and dining recommendations.

The size of the book is traveler friendly too with a water-proof cover. This would fit nicely in a woman's purse.

This is a beautiful and handy book to look at even if you don't plan to go anywhere.

This is the guide you want 5 out of 5 stars.

Is this is the first time you 're looking for a tourist guide...don't look anymore, this is the one you want. I was looking for a good guide to go around Germany, while I'm here, and this one just work perfectly me, it gives you a little map of the mayor cities with all the hot spots and an introduction to German history in general and useful travel tips, they also cover all the german states... beautifully illustrated, with a lot of pictures and very useful information. It's an awesome guide!!

Pretty good coverage, but not great for budget travellers 3 out of 5 stars.
21 of 24 people found this review helpful.

I'm planning a trip to Scotland (leaving next week), and have never used Frommer's guides before. It has good suggestions for interesting touristy places to visit in Scotland, and gives a well written, concise historical description of the sites, which I like.

However, for booking hotels, I haven't selected a single suggestion from Frommers. This is because their suggestions are generally way too expensive. For example, looking for accomodations in the Orkney Islands, you'd think it was impossible to spend less than $150 a night if you relied exclusively on this guide. On the web, I found that there are at least a handful two and three star hotels in Kirkwall that were less than $100 a night, and look very nice.

Also, it says in Frommer's that it's ~$100 to travel by train to Edinburgh from London, but it doesn't mention that there are actually a huge range of fares, from ~$20 to more than $200 at www.virgin.com/trains, that depends on how early you purchase the tickets, and how flexible you want the ticket to be.

From these and other examples, I've decided that Frommer's is a fine place to start for an overview and figuring out where I want to go, but I'd end up unnecessarily spending a fortune if I relied on it for the practical stuff.

Editorial Review:

Experience a place the way the locals do. Enjoy the best it has to offer. Frommer's. The best trips start here.
  • Whether it's the Edinburgh Festival or the fairways of St. Andrews that draw you to Scotland, our authors tell you how to get the most out of your vacation.
  • Outspoken opinions on what's worth your time and what's not.
  • Exact prices, so you can plan the perfect trip whatever your budget.

rather pointless 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The author can't decide whether he wants to write an erotic history or the tale of his own romance. Doing both doesn't work in this book, which has no frame of reference or even a reliable sequence of events.

The other major flaw of the book is ots reliance on the sex lives of the Surrealists- as if Parisian sexual histroy is limited to these odd ducks.

Not particularly inspiring or evocative.

The City of Light and Love- an Unusual Read 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

John Baxter, an Aussie ex-pat whose tale of moving to Paris and conceiving a child with his French girlfriend is the backdrop for a foray into the attitudes toward sex in Paris, featuring sexual attitudes and locales of the 1920-40's to present. I learned that Georges Simenon, author of the famed Inspector Maigret novels, routinely interviewed his house staff for sexual partners and had an affair with Josephine Baker, the acclaimed black songstress appearing on stage nightly in only a skirt of phallic-symbol bananas. There are mentions of many literary figures and their viewpoints on sex, including Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and more. Not the typical Paris guidebook, but will lead you to places not found in Frommer's.
