Paris Dreaming 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The beautiful photos in this quality desk calendar help fill the void in not being able to visit Paris personally. The large areas available for daily input make this product very user friendly. I order the same one every year!

okay 4 out of 5 stars.

Not much to say. It's a nice calendar. Nothing fancy. Good size. I like the photos (which would be the whole reason for choosing a calendar).

Francophile daughter 3 out of 5 stars.

This was a gift for my daughter who traveled to France before heading off to college a few years ago. She loved the choice of pictures and the calendar is hung prominently in her room. It arrived in good shape in plenty of time for gift-wrapping.

Useful Book 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This looks like a very useful tool for once we are traveling, but a little less so for planning ahead.

Inadequate for my purposes 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for information on what to do with our luggage if we take a train fropm Berlin to Prague. This seems like the type of info the book should include and it didn't. I get the impression that the book is based more on research then actual experience in useing the trains. It doesen't appear to provide much info that is not available on the internet.

AWESOME! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is one of my best purchases in Amazon, it's amazing how good is this book. It's very practical for any traveler around the world, it has detailed content in subjects like: what to tell to italian men if they are bothering you (and as a woman... this can become very handy!) or everything you need to say in a medical emergency or how to enjoy the food in a restaurant (because you can understand now the menu). I really recommend this book if you are looking for a better experience in your trips or if you are learning a foreign language (like me). Greetings from Mexico. Nayeli

Best Travel Book 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I could not be more happier with the Eyewitness Travel Guide books. Last year my mother and I went to Prague and had the Prague book of the series with us. We relied on this book to guide us through the entire city, and it did. These books are absolutely wonderful. They are so helpful in finding you anything you need! They have detailed plans and maps of the cities, and provide you with information on just about everything! We just recieved the Venice & the veneto and florence & tuscany books. They have so much information about these cities amidst beautiful photographs and maps. You will not be dissappointed if you buy this book, or any other from the series. They are a lifesaver, and a tour guide in writing!

Editorial Review:

The guide that shows you what other travel books only tell you!

Excellent map of the Continent. 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Folds out to be about 3 feet wide and 2.5 feet tall, with maps printed on both sides. The large orange box in the middle of the greater-Europe side (which shows the area printed on the opposite side of the map) is a bit annoying, but that seems to be the worst of it. The map's heavier-duty cover is built to not mutilate the paper map inside when folding and unfolding, and the legends are clear and helpful. The largest map goes from the northernmost part of Great Britain to the top of North Africa, and from the outskirts of Moscow, Russia, to the outskirts of Ankara, Turkey. Aside from the orange box, there is nothing obscuring the continent. Scandinavia is chopped off the top of the map and moved into a greater-detailed box out in the Atlantic; I fully agree with this choice and prefer it over other maps I have owned where showing Scandinavia in its correct spot means either a lesser-detailed map, or moving Italy to another side of the map. The detailed side of the map showing central Europe only runs from Dover, UK, to Paris to Avignon, France, and Warsaw, Poland, to Belgrade, Serbia. It shows the rail relationships between these European cities and most stops in-between: Dover, UK; Paris; Turin; Milan; Munich; Brussels; Cologne; Berlin; Vienna; Budapest; Warsaw; and Prague. The detailed map covers the heartland of where most American travelers go in Europe, and shows definitively how to travel to other popular destinations, such as Madrid, Rome, Athens, London, Moscow, and Copenhagen. Either side of the map is great for posting on a wall, and the well-marked scenic rail routes make it easy to plan a train ride. Also simply excellent as a general-purpose map of Europe, and superior in this respect to road maps of the Continent.

Editorial Review:

While still a teenager, Patrick Leigh Fermor made his way across Europe, as recounted in his classic memoirs, A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water. During World War II, he fought with local partisans against the Nazi occupiers of Crete. But in A Time to Keep Silence, Leigh Fermor writes about a more inward journey, describing his several sojourns in some of Europe’s oldest and most venerable monasteries. He stays at the Abbey of St. Wandrille, a great repository of art and learning; at Solesmes, famous for its revival of Gregorian chant; and at the deeply ascetic Trappist monastery of La Grande Trappe, where monks take a vow of silence. Finally, he visits the rock monasteries of Cappadocia, hewn from the stony spires of a moonlike landscape, where he seeks some trace of the life of the earliest Christian anchorites.

More than a history or travel journal, however, this beautiful short book is a meditation on the meaning of silence and solitude for modern life. Leigh Fermor writes, “In the seclusion of a cell—an existence whose quietness is only varied by the silent meals, the solemnity of ritual, and long solitary walks in the woods—the troubled waters of the mind grow still and clear, and much that is hidden away and all that clouds it floats to the surface and can be skimmed away; and after a time one reaches a state of peace that is unthought of in the ordinary world.”

Useless product 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In Kindle product format it is virtually useless. Mostly Wikipedia descriptions, no prices, no hotels, one restaurant in Lisbon. No intercity mileages. Climatology useless. Maps are unreadable.
Zero detailed guide book information. Useful only for someone who has just found out there is a country called Portugal.

I thought it was "Mobile Travel Guide to Portugal", not a cut and paste of disjointed information called a "MobileReference". A bad purchase, and an awful travel guide. I want to return it.

For Anyone Interested in Spanish Wine 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'll be brief: there is no finer in depth book about Spanish wine on the market to date. I cannot recommend the books published by Mitchell Beazley highly enough. I have found them indespensible for my studies towards my Master of Wine.

Pros: beautiful photos, in depth regional info, producer bios.
Cons: you need a 'decent' wine education before tackling this one.

ok overview, little insight 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a ok overview of spanish wine regions. However, it fails as a buying guide; there is no insight into "hot" areas, where producers are producing exceptional wines at very attractive prices. Areas such as Montsant, Almansa, Bullas, Gigals, Valdeorras, Ribera del Jucar are doing great things, but you would never know it, based on this book, unfortunately.

Editorial Review:

The New Spain brings the reader up-to-date with this country's fast-changing wine scene. The dramatic leap in quality in the vineyards of Spain in recent years makes this a timely examination of the country's wine. The New Spain offers a region-by-region tour, ranging from classics such as Rioja and sherry to relative newcomers such as Ribera del Duero and Navarra. Includes a guide to vineyard classification, grapes, soil, climate, and winemaking processes.

What can I say? It's Michelin. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Loved this book. Used it in July '08 and it reflected the French passion for food. The restaurants reviewed were accurately portrayed. Their particular specialties were listed as well as the prix fixe & a la carte costs, etc. In short, you have all the info you could possibly want about restaurants...locations, hours, phone & fax numbers. I would definitely use it again for my next trip to Paris. Buy it, you'll really like it.

Michelin Red Book Guide to Paris 2008 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the first time I've seen a Michelin Paris Guide in English. And for those of us who haven't mastered French it is a Godsend. We now have all the Michelin insight, in English, in one place. I highly recommend it.
