Streetwise Madrid Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of Madrid, Spain - Folding pocket size travel map with integrated metro map including lines & stations

This map covers the following areas:
Main Madrid Map 1:12,000
Madrid Area Map 1:87,000
Madrid Metro Map

Madrid sits on a plateau like an elegantly dressed matron, bejeweled with classic monuments and crowned with stately museums housing some of the world’s greatest works of art. But don’t be fooled by this formal exterior. At night, the confines of being the economic and governmental center of Spain are shed, and the city transforms into an energetic partygirl staying out until dawn swinging through the myriad of clubs, cafes and restaurants.

Madrid is compact and most of the sights of interest are found in the Centro area between the Royal Palace and Parque del Retiro. Some of the important sights not to miss are: Museo del Prado, one of the world’s greatest art galleries containing important works by Spanish and European masters, the massive Royal Palace, commissioned by Philip V and open to the public, and the Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s famous central arcaded square, a very lively bustling place day and night. If you’re in Madrid during the bullfighting season (March to October) Plaza de Toros is Spain’s largest bullring, where regular bullfights are held each Sunday.

The STREETWISE® map of Madrid contains all important sites, plus hotels, metro stations and parks. Also highlighted are special walks through old Madrid. The inset Madrid Metro map provides a quick way to travel throughout the city. The Madrid Area map inset will navigate you in and out of Madrid and help you find the Aeroporto International Barajas. If you’re traveling further afield, don’t forget to look at STREETWISE® Spain, STREETWISE® Barcelona and STREETWISE® Seville and Andalusia.

Our pocket size map of Madrid is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use. The STREETWISE® Madrid map is one of many detailed and easy-to-read city street maps designed and published by STREETWISE®. Editorial Review:

A flaneur is a stroller, a loiterer, someone who ambles through a city without apparent purpose but is secretly attuned to the history of the place and in covert search of adventure, aesthetic or erotic. Edmund White, who lived in Paris for sixteen years, wanders through the streets and avenues and along the quays, taking us into parts of Paris virtually unknown to visitors and indeed to many Parisians. Entering the Marias evokes the history of Jews in France, just a visit to the Haynes grill recalls the presence - festive, troubled - of black Americans in Paris for a century and a half. Gays, Decadents, even Royalists past and present are all subjected to the flaneur's scrutiny. Edmund White's "The Flaneur" is opinionated, personal, subjective. As he conducts us through the bookshops and boutiques, past the monuments and palaces, filling us in on the gossip and background of each site, he allows us to see through the blank walls and past the proud edifices and to glimpse the inner, human drama. Along the way he recounts everything from the latest debates among French law-makers to the juicy details of Colette's life in the Palais Royal, even summoning up the hothouse atmosphere of Gustave Moreau's atelier. Coming soon in the series are: "Ahdaf Soueif on Cairo", "Peter Carey on Sydney" and "Rubem Fonseca on Rio".

as good as any LP product 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

good volume as I've found all LP publications to be.........a little thin on Estonia but enough for a day in Tallinn

A little too comprehensive 4 out of 5 stars.

Got this book 7 days after ordering on free shipping. Not too bad, kudos to Amazon. The book is the latest version and includes updated information, though not to a very large extent.

Provide good practical information on National Parks in the region but probably a bit lacking on transportation. It would be ideal if there's listing of popular train routes as I found it in the Russia and Belarus edition.

Editorial Review:

Watch the aurora borealis tango its way across the night sky p22. Discover the world's greatest rail journey: see daring climbers scale giant glaciers as waterfalls spatter your skin on the Bergen train p329. Come face to bill with a fearless, curious puffin on the remote sea bird-soaked cliffs of the Faroe Islands p126. Written by an opinionated team of eight savvy writers. The only guide with in-depth coverage of Iceland and the Faroes, plus information on Tallinn and St Petersburg. Filled with feedback from travellers and tips from locals.

Nothing can make a trip to Italy more enjoyable and rewarding than a great dining experience - but you have to know what to order! This handy guide helps readers navigate Italian menus while also steering people to some great Italian restaurants, bistros, cafes, wine shops, and food markets in Italy's big cities. Most of the book is a comprehensive menu reader, translating thousands of Italian words into English. There are also sections on restaurant etiquette, a pronunciation guide, English-to-Italian phrases and words and descriptions of the many different kinds of food and eating establishments in Italy.

As a resident... 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

...I can affirm the genuine worth of this book. The maps are convenient, easy to use, and marvelously clear. Furthermore, the organization of the guide is wonderfully helpful in assisting the traveler (or resident, as the case may be) in finding cultural destinations, culinary spots, that may have otherwise been missed.

This guide is, like most all of the Dorling-Kindersley series, geared toward helping the traveler ascertain what things might be of particular sightworthiness. Unlike the Michelin guides, this isn't particularly into the business of rating destinations, and it certainly isn't going to provide the standard domestic AAA guide service of pointing the traveler toward "hot" restaurants. For a diverse, wonderfully cosmopolitan city, this guide provides a marvelous introduction, and though it neglects a few potential interests in outlying regions, does an admirable job of hitting all the highlights, and even including pictures of most.

The material was current as of late spring 2003.

Lavishly illustrated with photographs, this collection captures the local color of every remarkable corner of this richly diverse land-the clamor and vitality of Naples, the idyllic enchantment of Lago Maggiore, the intriguing cultural contradictions of Genova, the breathtaking (if terrifying) cliffside trails in Cinqueterre.

AUTHOR BIO: Umberto Eco is the author of four novels as well as numerous works of criticism, philosophy, and literary theory. His fifth novel, The Mysterious Flame, will be published in June. Editorial Review:

"An utterly splendid book, quite the most brilliantly written, balanced, and explanative general work on the Vikings ever to appear in English or in any language."-- Scandinavian Studies
The subject of this book is the Viking realms, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, their civilization and culture, and their many sided achievements at home and abroad.
A highly readable narrative follows the development of these Northern peoples--the Nordmenn--from their origins and the legendary pre-history to the military triumphs of Canute and the defeat of Harald Hardradi at Stamford Bridge in 1066, which symbolically ended the Viking age.
The book recounts the Vikings' exploits in war, trade, and colonization: the assault on Western Christendom; the trading and military ventures to the Slav and Muslim worlds and to Byzantium; and the western voyages of discovery and settlement to Greenland, Iceland, and America.
Numerous photographs, maps, and drawings contribute to Gwyn Jones's rounded portrait of Viking civilization and vividly evoke the importance in their culture of religion, art, and seafaring.

Very comprehensive! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Rough Guides have always been my favorites, and this was no exception. It provides a comprehensive guide to all areas of the city of London, and includes hotels, cafes, pubs, shopping, etc. It also makes for an entertaining read, although I question how much the author actually likes living in London. (The book actually states that "disappointingly, London has had only 2 assassinations." This is a disappointment?!) In addition to the sections on each part of the city, the appendix has a decent history of London, as well as a list of other books about the city.

For anyone who plans to spend a substantial amount of time in London, this will be an indispensable guide. I tend to leave the country for a couple months at a time, and thus rely completely on these guides. However, it's not the best choice if you simply plan on going for a weekend, since there is no way you'll be able to do and see it all....I would then suggest something like Frommer's Top Ten: London instead.

Editorial Review:

Designed to be tough and immensely practical the Rough Guide Maps provide travel information, and the city's sights, monuments and attractions. The maps show every shop, restaurant, bar and hotel in the Rough Guide travel guide to the city together with their opening times and, in many cases, phone numbers. Each map covers the main area of the city on one side and an enlarged city centre map on the reverse.

Editorial Review:

From Stephen Clarke, the internationally bestselling author of A Year in the Merde and In the Merde for Love, Merde Happens is the third installation of Paul West's hilarious mis-adventures in merde. This time around Paul finds himself in financial trouble. After failing to translate the menu of his English-style tearoom into proper French, the Ministry of Culture levies him with a substantial fine, which he must pay within 6 weeks or risk losing his business. So, he sets off to America, with his French girlfriend in tow, to take part in an international competition to promote Britain as a tourism destination. But as the not-so-dynamic duo stumble toward Los Angeles, via Boston, Miami, New Orleans, and Las Vegas, Paul’s well-oiled plans for success, of course, turn to merde: While visiting Boston, he inspires an impromptu recreation of the Boston Tea Party; in Miami, he narrowly escapes a carjacking only to have to his hotel room catch fire later that night; and somewhere between Miami and New Orleans, his girlfriend hitches a ride with another man for a liaison dangereuse. Meanwhile, Paul’s old flame has declared war on her former beau by trying to sabotage his chances of winning the contest. And as Paul knows better than anyone, when you mix love and war—merde happens.
