Great guide to Germany 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This has been a very good book for us. It has a lot of the standard sights but a few that you don't find in every other guide book. In fact, at the back of each section there are small blurbs about (usually) smaller sights or villages and we have enjoyed some of those more than the really popular cities and sights. We're living in Germany for just a few years and like to choose different areas to explore when we can. This book has been the only one we've needed to refer to.

Editorial Review:

With clear maps and practical travel advice, the National Geographic Traveler series offers in-depth descriptions of major cultural, architectural and historical sites, city area maps, specially commissioned walks and drives and an author tour of each destination. Special features include: an extensive introduction to each destination; places of interest highlighted on all maps with each major site covered in detail; "more places to visit" providing places of interest off the beaten track; a director of hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment; and practical tips on opening times and telephone numbers.

On Top of the Austrian World 4 out of 5 stars.

"Walking Austria's Alps, Hut to Hut"
Jonathan Hurdle
ISBN 0-89886-640-5

This book deals with a mountain world that exists above the picturesque towns, the beautiful lakes, and the majestic valleys of Austria. For the most part, it must be reached by foot. To those who are in reasonably good shape and can rough it a little, though, this book provides the insight to partake of that Alpine world in all its glory.

Having visited Austria on several occasions and ridden by cable car near the tops of mountains such as the Kitzbuehler Horn and Grossglockner, I have glimpsed from up there the pale blue-white mountain peaks that lead off almost endlessly to the distant horizon. But to have the opportunity to walk for days in those mountains, spending the nights in mountain lodges built just for hikers, that would be a fine experience.

These mountain huts are probably unfamiliar even to those who are fairly familiar with Austria. These huts, Mr. Hurdle explains, are not shacks, but they are professionally run, clean, and comfortable mountain lodges, where hikers sleep on long mattresses in communal areas for as many as twenty persons at a time without regard to sex or age. Sometimes food is available, as well as wine and beer. Hut guests have also been known to sing. Altogether, there are about 900 such places in the mountains of Germany and Austria.

The book describes eleven different tours of from four to eleven days. The hikes are mostly in the southern part of Austria where it borders with Italy. The hikes include tours in the Oeztaler Alpen, where the famous ice-age man, that Austrians call "Oetzi" was found, as well as a hike on Grossglocker, the highest mountain in Austria. There is a map for each tour, and a description including the appropriate hut in which to sleep for each stage.

This is an interesting book, but perhaps it loses a little by focusing almost entirely on the details of the hikes. The general reader might hope for a slightly broader context that included a little more detail about the towns or areas near the starting or ending points of some of the tours. It is somewhat difficult, even for one familiar with Austria, to get ones bearings in terms of the familiar towns and highways of the country. One other shortcoming in this book is that the pictures are all in black and white. Color would have enormously increased the degree to which the beauty of the mountains is conveyed.

On the whole, the book sparked my interest, and I hope, before long, to walk in the beauty of some of those high remote places.

Editorial Review:

Updated edition of 11 spectacular treks in the Austrian alps, with nightly stops at hospitable and cozy alpine huts.

Editorial Review:

From its twin sources in high Swiss alps to its delta in the North Sea, the Rhine is Europe's most important river - historically, culturally and artistically. Flowing majestically through the continent, it serves as a boundary between nations and a unifying force, timelessly conveying both spiritual currents and merchandise and inspiring pilgrims, painters, sculptors, architects, poets, writers and composers. This superb panorama of the Rhine's artistic landscape shows the river and the cities, villages, cathedrals, monasteries and castles that abound along its course in all their true magnificence. World-renowned masterpieces of painting (such as Grunewald's Isenheim Altarpiece), sculpture (the Breisach Altar) and goldsmiths' work (the Shrine of the Three Kings in Cologne) are among the astonishing variety of treasures in every field of art, all gloriously illustrated and knowledgeably described in their historical, art historical and geographical context. For the armchair traveller and connoisseur who wishes to indulge in all that this great river has to offer, no journey could be more rewarding.

Prague for the deeply romantic, literate traveler 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

The late Mr. Ripellino has amassed a tribute to Prague like no other. It breathes. Anyone that has ever visited the "Golden City of a 100 spires" must have had an inkling deep in their soul of what the author has magnificently put down in words. The "Old Crone [Prague] has claws", as Kafka put it, and Ripellino shows exactly why that is so. The research that went into this book is simply astounding, with my edition having 44 pages of tightly spaced notes, of 333 pages total, including index. The book takes us from one extraordinary Prague tale to another, with myth, legend and reality all melting into one pot of magic. Anyone that plans to visit the center of Europe should read this book in advance, or at least skim it on the plane. It is a tough read, being full of poetic phrases and meticulous details, which often beg for multiple readings. However, the time spent is well worth it. The book will serve as a beautiful bridge between the soul and the mind, as the traveler wanders along the cobblestones of thousand year old "Praha." p.s. I bought my edition (Picador) in Prague for 315 Kcs, or about US$ 9. The price on the back of the paperback is 9.99 British Pounds, which is about US$ 17, depending on the day.

Editorial Review:

'A superb, haunting, clotted mad masterpiece.'- John Banville, The Observer This unique cultural history attempts to go beyond the tourist clich of Prague as the 'golden city' to bring out all the mystery, ambiguity, gloom, lethargy and hidden fascination of the city on the Vltava. Ripellino slips into the style of melodrama and ghost stories, the anecdotes of the enchanted traveller and the outlandish bad taste of beer-teller tales to bring out the sorcery of the Bohemian capital in a mixture of fact and fiction.

Excellent guide - brief info about everything, many photos 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

It is hard to believe that the authors could store so much information about Warsaw and Poland is such a small and practical book size format. It is really amazing book - all you need to know about Warsaw - first, brief information followed by more detailed area by area guide with wonderful maps and pictures. Every important object is explained on two consecutive sites. For instance the guide about St. John Cathedral contains the schematic picture of the church in the center stretched over left and right page. Additionally some historic and art objects which are located inside the church are showed and explained with the arrows pointing to the part of the church where they can be found.
Each section is marked with different color which makes it so easy to find. At the end - it has a survival guide - hotels, food place, drinks (with pictures of different types of vodka and beer), communication and travel, entertainment. Just keep it all the time with you while in Warsaw and you would be never lost! Updated with every edition.

Editorial Review:

This guide to Warsaw is designed to be used when planning a trip, on holiday, and as a souvenir on returning home. It is organized with a thematic approach, district by district, with the aim of helping the reader to get to know the city quickly. Every significant sight, location, building, museum and gallery, as well as major shops, hotels and restaurants, are shown on the page alongside practical information. It also contains 3D aerial maps, foolproof visual guides to currency, tickets and communication systems.
