very helpful in our driving tour of Alsace 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This was a great companion to our (my husband & I) tour of the Alsace reagion of France which is worth the trip! It is a beautiful not-well traveled region of France. We visited this French/German area on a trip where we visited Mont Blanc and the French Riveria as well. We were greeted with only friendliness from the wineries and other French people that we met on our visit to Alsace.

Solid book 4 out of 5 stars.

Maps are good, but could be a little more complete. Found a typo or two on it, but worked for me to navigate to more obscure parts of Alsace.

Editorial Review:

This Michelin Green Guide explores northeastern France from the open horizons of Champagne to the stony cliffs of the Meuse valley and the thick forests of Ardennes and Argonne. The blue line of the Vosges mountains rises between Lorraine and Alsace, where vineyards stretch from the foothills to the Rhine valley plain. Majestic Gothic cathedrals, half-timbered villages, mountain retreats, medieval castles, museums for every interest distinguish this historic land and cultural crossroads.

This Book Sucks 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book figuring it was practical and useful, which for my surprise, was exactly the opposite! It gives you several phrases in German (organized by travel situations and SCENARIOS) which are more of JOKES than helpful statements to use while you are travelling.

If you are a beginner at German idiom, don't buy it. It won't help you at all.

However, if you already speak German, and want to laugh at the CULTURAL ASPECTS of Germany, than this is your book indeed.

Suspend Reality For Just a Second 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

And you will love this book! Keep in mind: It is not meant to instruct anyone on how to speak to real-life Germans...it is simply a sarcastic, harmless fun-poking bit of dry humor. If one was silly enough to actually try and use this, he/she might end up with their "hazelnuts in a vise". I live in Germany and have let my German friends take a look at it just to guage their opinions. The result? The humor doesn't translate and they just don't "get it"---they find it neither insulting nor funny.

So just loosen up, enjoy it for what it is and realize that complaints that it's not a 'real' book are useless and moot. Enjoy! Tschuss!

Munich, regional capital of Bavaria in south central Germany, is the second most popular destination in Germany after Berlin. The city is a center for culture and arts, with a staggering assortment of museums. It’s also a fun loving, convivial, good old fashion party town known for the annual Oktoberfest.

Munich is a city of contrasts. The Marienplatz is the heart of Munich and the site of its most important historic buildings. The square is dominated by the Neo-gothic Town Hall featuring its famous Glockenspiel. The Alte Pinakothek houses ones of Europe’s most important art collections. In contrast is the Hofbrauhouse where beer has been swilled at this world famous tavern site since it became a royal brewery in 1605. In Englischer Garten you\'ll find Haus der Kunst, a popular place for art ehxibits. It\'s located adjacent to one of the best river surfing spots in Munich (there are several): the Eisenbach River. You can stand on the bridge and watch as surfers carve turns on the icy water. The water is shallow and the water is fast, so this may not be the best place to try the sport for the first time, but it\'s definitely worth watching as surfers line up for a chance to test their skills on this permanent 3 foot wave. And then there is Theresienwiese, the park on the west side of town where the vast beerhall tents are pitched for Octoberfest.

The main STREETWISE® map of Munich covers the central city in detail and contains all important sites, architecture, metro stations and parks. Also provided is an inset map which features Munich’s metro system and fare structure. This Munich map will enable you to navigate your way to Nymhenburg Palace or Olympic Park, both of which are outside the center city. A Munich Area map, which guides you in, out, and around Munich, is helpful in finding the Munich International Airport and other out of town sites.

Our pocket size map of Munich is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use. The STREETWISE® Munich map is one of many detailed and easy-to-read city street maps designed and published by STREETWISE®. Buy your STREETWISE® Munich map today and you too can navigate Munich, Germany like a native. Munich Beer Drinkers 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is suprisingly good and gives extended information about various interesting locales in Munich. The beer locales are a kick. One could spend the whole trip visiting these occasionally quite interesting and cozy dispensers of comustibles and brews.

Editorial Review:

Travelers can drink in all the atmosphere, history, and beer that Munich has to offer with this updated guide to the best watering holes in the beer-drinking capital of the world. More than 70 of Munich's best beer gardens, beer halls, pubs, and late-night hot spots are listed in detail. The colorful histories behind them are included, along with detailed maps and instructions on how to find each place. A special chapter on Oktoberfest and other beer festivals make this guide as practical as it is entertaining. This revised edition pays for itself several times over with the enclosed beer coupons from some of Munich's most prized beer gardens. Its wisdom will make any trip to the Beer City a truly unforgettable travel experience.

Practical & helpful...an excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The Eyewitness Travel Phrase books are excellent guides for tourists looking to communicate as much as possible in foreign languages. They include a host of phrases that can be very helpful in many situations - there are the classic "Can you tell me what time it is?" to a variety of more complex or particular expressions. There's also a section on spelling and pronounciation. It also includes expressions used not only while on vacation, but also while doing business.

This little book is also quite handy thanks to it's size, it fits perfectly on any pocket. It also includes a section with a simple dictionary that can be very helpful in identifying a variety of words.

The book is very good at doing its job, which is helping people cross the language barriers while abroad. However, it shouldn't be mistaken with a German language course. This is book is not meant to teach you the German language, but to give you a good enough understanding of it so you can travel without major inconveniences. If you want to expand on the language, you need to get other books.

Editorial Review:

Featuring pronunciation, a menu guide, a mini-dictionary, hotel information, and emergency phrases.

Whether you're trying to order dinner or get back to your hotel, you cannot make your way without knowing what to say, and the Eyewitness Travel Guide Phrase Books are the perfect guide for tongue-tied tourists. These compact, user-friendly books fit right into your pocket or purse, and meet the communications needs of the tourist and business traveler alike. Based on an innovative system of imitated pronunciation, phrases are organized into logical and practical divisions, including time; food and drink; air travel; bus, taxi, and subway information; shopping; health and medical care; and much more. Typical replies to questions you may be asked, as well as signs and instructions you're likely to see or hear, are also given. The guides also include a carefully selected mini-dictionary, and useful conversion tables translating distance, clothing sizes, and weight.
