Editorial Review:

Twice in this century, Germany initiated wars of unimagined terror and destruction. In both cases, defense of the “Prussian” realm, the German homeland, was the perceived and vilified perpetrator. Few today understand with any precision what “Prussia” means, either geographically or nationalistically, but neither would they deny the psychic resonance of the single word. To most, it means unbridled aggression, the image of the goose-stepping Junker. But what was once Prussia is now a significant portion of Eastern Europe, a contested homeland first won by Christian knights of the Teutonic Order. For centuries thereafter its terrain has been crisscrossed by war and partitioned by barbed wire. In its final catastrophe of 1945, nearly two million German refugees fled the region as Russian armies broke the eastern front, perhaps the greatest dislocation of a civilian population at any time during World War II. With the Berlin Wall now a memory and the Soviet Union in a state of collapse, this remains a geography in shambles. Modern travelers can now, for the first time in decades, see and ponder for themselves what Prussia really was and now is.James Charles Roy and Amos Elon, two writers noted for their inquisitive natures, have gone to search through the rubble themselves. They intermingle present-day observations with moving vignettes from the German and Prussian past, sketching a portrait of the Europe we know today. The story is spiced with interviews and reminiscences, unforgettable in their sadness, of people looking back at a life now gone, a life full of turmoil and heartache, memories both fond and tragic. The final result: a far deeper understanding of the tattered lands of today’s Eastern Europe.

An amazing book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this as a gift for my little (20 yo) brother's birthday. He was born in Berlin. First of all this book is HUGE! I love that the explanations of the pictures are written not only in English, but in German. What a fantastic masterpiece.

Unglaublich! 5 out of 5 stars.

What a book! My mother as well as her sisters were born in Berlin during and after World War II, so I grew up hearing family stories of this amazing city. This book provided a tremendous visual aid to all these stories. Looking at the images I could picture my grandmother as a young woman, and my aunts and my mother in the postwar years.
If you have any connection to this amazing city, this book will bring tears to your eyes, for all the hardship and challenges it has faced, and with what fantastic grace it reemerged like phoenix from the ashes.

Editorial Review:

The spirit of Berlin: a photographic journey into the city’s history

Devastated by two world wars, divided during the Cold War, and liberated with the destruction of the wall, Berlin has survived extraordinary circumstances over the course of its history and emerged as a center of European power and culture. From 1860 to the present day, this book presents the story of Berlin in photographs, portraits, maps, and aerial views. With nearly 700 pages of emotional, atmospheric images, this is the most comprehensive photographic study on Berlin ever made. More than a tribute to the city and its history, this book especially pays homage to Berlin’s inhabitants: full of hope and strength, in their faces is reflected Berlin’s undying soul.

Streetwise Budapest Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of Budapest, Hungary - Folding pocket size travel map with integrated metro map including lines & stations

This map covers the following areas:

Budapest City Center Map 1:11,000
Millennium City Center Map 1:17,000

People say Budapest is the Paris of Central Europe. Maybe that statement is true because it combines a combination of western luxuries, architectural beauty, and cosmopolitan European traditions. But this baroque city is still connected to its Eastern European heritage with the steaming baths, incredibly complex language and lusty cuisine.

Budapest straddles a curve in the river Danube which bisects two distinct parts. The east side is known as Pest and the west side is known as Buda, hence Budapest. It s a very logical, well laid out city.

Castle Hill is the premier destination for visitors and contains many of Budapest’s most important monuments and museums, and great views of Pest across the blue Danube. Pastel houses lining cobbled streets and stone balustrade overlooks give this citadel a fairy tale quality, while bullet holes from the unsuccessful 1956 uprising pockmark many buildings.

The main map of Budapest covers a large part of the central city in detail and is fully indexed with hotels, sites, architecture, metro stations and parks. The City Center inset map expands the old city grid and enables you to stroll the warren of old streets and absorb Hungarian history and culture at your leisure. The inset map of Budapest Metro facilitates your travel throughout the city.

One example of the importance of on site research: when this Budapest map was first conceived in the early 1990’s we ran into a unique problem with sudden unannounced street name changes. Streets named after heroic Socialist revolutionaries were changed without notice. The streets were renamed after heroes of the Hungarian National Liberation. Other maps who rely on out of date documents for updating still reflect the old street names. Imagine publishing a map and unknowingly using names like Karl Marx Ave. and Lenin Square. Whoops! Fortunately, with our STREETWISE® Budapest Map, we adhered to a policy of physically researching and updating the city, thereby avoiding these sorts of mistakes.

Our pocket size map of Budapest is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use. The STREETWISE® Budapest map is one of many detailed and easy-to-read city street maps designed and published by STREETWISE®. Buy your STREETWISE® Budapest map today and you too can navigate Budapest, Hungary like a native. For a larger selection of our detailed travel maps simply type STREETWISE MAPS into the Amazon search bar.

Nice pictures from a nice country 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book gives a good overview about nice places in Germany. I like such books filled with many colored pictures and minor amount of text. All important cities and counties are pictured. The pictures itself are professionell.

Professional, full color pictures 5 out of 5 stars.

We purchased this book for my 82 year old father-in-law. He doesn't like to read much, but loves to look at pictures. I was taking a chance buying this book without seeing it in person, but I am not disappointed! I think he will love this book and it will be a perfect Christmas present for him. Thank you to the first customer who left a review - it was very helpful.

Essential for a trip to Munich 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

If you are planning a short trip to Munich this is a must have book. It covers excellent restaurants and wonderful places to stop and shop. The essential sights are all listed by region and are explained in enough detail for one to decide if they want to visit. If you are going for a longer period of time I would recommend a bigger guide but I would still get this one to walk around with. If you are travling around the Bavarian alps region you will need another travel guide in addition to this one as it stays focused on Munich

Must have for your trip to Munich 5 out of 5 stars.

Guten tag!

DK Publishing is the leader in "Top 10" travel guides and their Munich edition is no exception. Accurate and easy to read maps, detailed train/metro line guides, and top 10 lists for nearly everything the city has to offer. I especially enjoy reading their recommendations for how many hours to plan for a museum/point of interest visit. This came in especially handy when visiting the Deutsches Museum. I originally planned to spend three hours there and ended up dedicating nearly an entire day based on the guide. The day was enjoyable and I was able to browse through all the exhibits - which were amazing and I recommend this museum if you are visiting Munich!

The guide is also handy to have as you take guided tours through the city. We all can't remember the names of the sights and the hundreds of facts behind them, but you can refer back later in your hotel or on your trip home.

Don't miss the section in the back on commonly used words/phrases and their translations. This came in handy a few times!

Top 10: Munich - 5 Stars

Safe travels,
Matthew Sherman

A Quick Read 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This slim volume presents dozens of aspects of German culture. For example, why do Germans value privacy? Why do they always close windows when they feel a draft? I definitely learned a lot from this book. My only complaints is that it could have gone a little more in depth about the causes of German behavior. Also, this book is a little out of date. It was published in the 90's, so there is a lot of talk about Marks rather than Euros, and you read a lot about the reunification of Germany, which is not as hot a topic as it was in the 90's. Even with these weak points, I think you'll be able to learn a lot. I wish that the author would release a more up-to-date version, though.

Incredibly Helpful 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I really enjoy this book. The average tourist may not get as much from it, if only passing through. I am an American, living in Germany. I found much of the book incredibly helpful. Yes, some sections are dated with the intro of the Euro, but it's true, stores close by 1800, some open til 2000. Nothing open on Sunday, except at the train station.

Highly recommended if you will be living or travelling for an extended time!

Editorial Review:

For All Students Ideal for a variety of courses, this completely up-to-date, alphabetically organized handbook helps students understand how people from German-speaking nations think, do business, and act in their daily lives.

Editorial Review:

In contrast with conventional wisdom that perceives Germany as a tenacious nation with a long history, the land of Beethoven and Goethe is actually a young country that rose out of the unification of a myriad of princedoms and small states that shared a common linguistic heritage. First unified in 1871, it was divided into two nations between 1945 and 1989. This handsome volume takes readers on an insider's tour of the unified, and, in many ways, completely new country of Germany. The text and spectacular photography evoke the infinite variety of Germany's architectural, artistic, and literary achievements, its traditions and cultural events, and its natural scenery, while paying tribute to aspects of the nation's collective identity, such as the music of Handel, Bach, and Wagner and the inspired verse of Schiller. Traveling through small villages and sophisticated cities, exploring the country's natural history and folklore, Germany provides readers with a fresh understanding of a country still relatively unknown in its entirety. Readers are transported to the well-known attractions of the country, such as the vineyards and castles of the Rhine Valley and cities steeped in tradition such as Hamburg and Bremen. They are also given a fascinating glimpse of locations such as Leipzig and Potsdam, the Thuringian Forest and Vogtland with its idyllic countryside, which had been hidden behind the Iron Curtain for many years. What emerges is a complex weaving of the many facets of Germany today that combine to create a richly varied country.
