I've had it with the Rick Steves Groupie crowd. We just came back from a month long trip in Europe and the only people anyone with the Rick Steves guides are meeting are other Americans with the same guidebooks. They all eat in the same restaurants and they all go to the same places. Europe Through the Back Door? Not hardly. It's Europe through the SAME door. Read a guidebook before you go somewhere, but leave it home. Have a small pocket map of some sort along with you and then ASK questions from locals when you get there. The whole idea of travel is to meet new people, enjoy a different culture and have some fun. The purpose is NOT to check things off a "to see" list.

Editorial Review:

With Rick Steves’ London 2009, travelers can visit Westminster Abbey, explore the British Museum, and finish the day off at an Art Nouveau pub. Rick offers expert advice on both the big-name attractions and local favorites of this world-class city, from the London Eye to artisan cheese shops. With detailed walks through London’s famous districts, including Bankside and the West End, and complete tours of the major museums and historical sights, Rick Steves’ London 2009 is a tour guide that fits in your pocket.

Streetwise London Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of London, England - Folding pocket size travel map with London Underground map including tube lines & stations

This map covers the following areas:
Main London City Map 1:20,000
London Underground Map - London Tube Map

London is one of the most popular, populated and accessible cites on earth. People love London. And why not? Londoners are charming and helpful, and their city operates on such a high dosage of civility that it could be considered an art form. London is an urban oasis where you can search out cutting edge design, cuisine, fashion, chic neighborhoods, or traditional culture.

When visiting London, be prepared to walk. Whether its basic window shopping, advanced people watching, or the rewarding task of locating restaurants and museums, London is urban roaming at its best. Days can be spent just visiting London's neighborhoods, each with its own character, atmosphere and unique offerings.

The STREETWISE® Map of London UK will enable you to go anywhere in central London. The detailed and indexed depiction of streets, tube stations, sites and hotels will enable you to spend more time making new urban discoveries than less time complaining about disorientation. Say you choose Mayfair, for its refined and cultured demeanor. Take an afternoon stroll wandering through Berkeley Square, Grovesnor Square and Green Park then finish with an espresso at Rochaux’s cafe. You’ll briefly feel exclusive. Wander the back alleys in Soho and you will never know what or who you’ll run across. The very trendy Covent Garden is dense with human interaction packed into a small area. Walk up to Bloomsbury with its literary heritage to be amazed by the vast holdings within the British Museum.

The original city of London is the square mile of the city center, now the financial center as well. Immerse yourself in history and architecture with its many fantastic buildings beginning with St Paul’s Cathedral on the western edge and ending at the Tower of London to the eastside. Hike over the Thames on the Tower Bridge to see the Design Museum and the HMS Belfast.

You are now on the South Bank dominated by Waterloo Station and its surrounding shopping and dining area. The London Eye will provide an interesting overhead perspective of greater London. Come back to earth and walk the Thames along Queen’s walk pedestrian path and you'll be rewarded upon finding Gabriel’s Wharf, the Tate Modern, the famous wobbly Millennium Bridge and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Walk South through Hyde Park and you encounter Knightsbridge. It is one of London’s most fashionable neighborhoods, the home of Harrod’s (the Vatican of department stores) and Beauchamp Place, one of London’s most fashionable shopping streets. If shopping is not on the agenda, there are museums like the Victoria & Albert, the Science Museum, and the Natural History Museum. South of Knightsbridge is Belgravia. This area has long been the aristocratic section of London, rivaling Mayfair in grandeur and tranquility.

Our London street map is fully indexed with streets, concert halls, hotels, museums and galleries, parks, points of interest, shopping areas and transportation terminals. A separate inset map of the London Underground, the Tube, is also included to facilitate your travel around the city.

Our pocket size map of London is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use. The STREETWISE® London map is one of many detailed and easy-to-read city street maps designed and published by STREETWISE®. Buy your STREETWISE® London map today and you too can navigate London, England like a native. Editorial Review:

Reacting to an itch common to Midwesterners since there's been a Midwest from which to escape, writer Bill Bryson moved from Iowa to Britain in 1973. Working for such places as Times of London, among others, he has lived quite happily there ever since. Now Bryson has decided his native country needs him--but first, he's going on a roundabout jaunt on the island he loves.

Britain fascinates Americans: it's familiar, yet alien; the same in some ways, yet so different. Bryson does an excellent job of showing his adopted home to a Yank audience, but you never get the feeling that Bryson is too much of an outsider to know the true nature of the country. Notes from a Small Island strikes a nice balance: the writing is American-silly with a British range of vocabulary. Bryson's marvelous ear is also in evidence: "... I noted the names of the little villages we passed through--Pinhead, West Stuttering, Bakelite, Ham Hocks, Sheepshanks ..." If you're an Anglophile, you'll devour Notes from a Small Island.

Eighteen countries. Five shock absorbers.
Two bikers. One amazing adventure...

After their fantastic trip round the world in 2004, fellow actors and bike fanatics Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman couldn't shake the travel bug. Inspired by their UNICEF visits to Africa, they knew they had to go back and experience this extraordinary continent in more depth.

And so they set off on their 15,000-mile journey with two new BMWs loaded up for the trip. Their route took them from John O'Groats at the northernmost tip of Scotland to Cape Agulhas on the southernmost tip of South Africa.

Along the way they rode some of the toughest terrain in the world -- and met some of the friendliest people. They rode their bikes right up to the pyramids in Egypt and visited Luke Skywalker's house in Tunisia. They met people who had triumphed over terrifying experiences -- former childhood soldiers in Uganda and children living amidst the minefields of Ethiopia. They had a close encounter with a family of gorillas in Rwanda and were nearly trampled by a herd of elephants in Botswana.

Riding through spectacular scenery, often in extreme temperatures, Ewan and Charley faced their hardest challenges yet. With their trademark humor and honesty they tell their story -- the drama, the dangers and sheer exhilaration of riding together again, through a continent filled with magic and wonder.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive, engrossing, and just plain fun-to-read guidebook than the Eyewitness Travel Guide: Great Britain. Spilling over with all sorts of useful information for the traveler, you'll find three-dimensional drawings, floor plans, and detailed neighborhood maps, as well as timelines, charts, and even popular bus routes. Broken into several sections--"Introducing Great Britain," "Region by Region" (including London and environs, Scotland, and Wales), "Traveler's Needs," and "Survival Guide"--the guide paints a complete picture of the country. Readers will especially appreciate the hundreds of color photos of everything from London's double-decker buses to the ancient formations at Stonehenge. You'll also find street-by-street illustrated city walks (Covent Garden, Westminster), as well as scenic hikes in the Scottish highlands and the Lake District, with plenty of listings for inns and fish-and-chip taverns along the way. --Jill Fergus

Great pictures, but no analysis 2 out of 5 stars.

The book has great maps and nice pictures, but doesn't help with making decisions for what to do on limited time. It also doesn't provide tips on avoiding lines or what days are best to go like other books

Traveling to London for the first time 4 out of 5 stars.

It's a great book if you've never been there before to find out what you want to do. Everything is categorized in the back, and great pictures! It's definitely a good thing to purchase before you go and study on the long plane ride.

Wonderful Book for those looking to travel!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have bought other books on traveling Scotland and this one is by far the best out of all of them. Full of detailed colorful pictures and suggested sites to visit. Wonderful book to look into!!!

Good read but could be better 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This read on Scotland is a good one, but I feel it could have done a better job of detailing information on Glasgow and Edinburgh. The images and content are great, but I just think it could have provided the reader with more information on Scotland's two largest cities. Worth the read though, especially if you're headed over anytime soon!

Great info and ideas 5 out of 5 stars.

Very handy as we drove around. Hit the main highlights of every region and even some off the beaten track. Useful maps within each section helped to plan the day's events.

Really Useful! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought the same kind of book for Ireland by Travel Guide for our October trip this year and found all the information invaluable! We found every spot of interest talked about and even managed pictures which looked just like those shown. I bought this same book re: Scotland as we are planning our next trip!

Editorial Review:

From the commanding heights of Edinburgh Castle and Ben Nevis to the rolling Lowlands of Dumfries, and from the Art Nouveau splendor of Mackintosh's Glasgow to the enchanting stillness of a Highland croft, you will find an amazing amount to see and do.

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there, chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.

From pub-hopping and leprechaun-chasing to Ogham stones and the Book of Kells, Lonely Planet presents the essential Ireland. In addition to the requisite lowdown on food and accommodations, a detailed activities section covers everything from walking and birdwatching to hang gliding and rock climbing. The book's intriguing "boxed asides" delve into topics ranging from the mystical to the environmental, including the witch of Kilkenny, the legend of Inishbofin Island, the Birr Observatory and Telescope, even Ireland's disappearing bogs. --Kathryn True

My trip to the Isles 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

One of my great regrets is that I've never made it to Britain -- yet. But, I buy the 365 Days calendar each year and take a different trip there every month. This is a marvelous calendar, chock-a-block with beautiful photos. Buy it and enjoy.

Editorial Review:

365 Days in Great Britain Wall Calendar: For the millions of American Anglophiles, Britain holds a singular and eternal appeal. Storied old castles with impeccably manicured gardens. Royal watching as a pastime. Towns with names like “Stow-on-the-Wold.” The Indian food of Brick Lane, gloriously overgrown cottages, Scotland’s hardy terriers, swans bobbing along the Thames. The 365 Days in Great Britain calendar features a year of glorious photographs showcasing the culture and spirit of England, Scotland, and Wales—the land described by Shakespeare as a “precious stone set in the silver sea.” From the ivy walls of Cambridge to the dramatic coast of Cornwall to London’s changing of the guard, it’s all that we love about Britain.

Another great book in the series. 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

Masterfully photographed, and printed on high quality paper, this book is a must have for any armchair traveller.
The book provides a map of the region on the inside cover, and then follows a brief and informative historical overview, which introduces the region to the reader. From that point onwards the book consists of one splendid photograph after the other, very often on a full page, or even spread over double pages, all with short descriptions to accompany them. The book depicts rural country scenes as well as historical landmarks, grand vistas to great architectural photos and even prominent statues. In short, everything the region has to offer.
I am also the proud owner of New England (Photographic Tour) by the same author and photographer and as such, I can highly recommend any one of the books in this series.

A Beautiful Country......A Beautiful Book 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book as a gift and was so impressed I had to buy one for myself! Photography which captures the distinct and rare beauty of Ireland and well-written text that describes and explains the many points of interest found in Ireland. If you've never been to Ireland this book will make you plan a holiday. If Ireland is already a favourite place to visit reading this book will make you want to return. High quality binding.

Editorial Review:

Ireland is a spectacular new addition to the series, with warm words and gorgeous photographs that perfectly capture the Emerald Isle's unique spirit.
