I've read numerous travel guides, most of which I've dragged with me throughout the duration of my trips (often times, two or three books and various website printouts and lists). These have included the Lonely Planet, Fodor's and Rough Guide books. All are decent, but tend to be long and tedious to thumb through quickly.

But when you factor in size, weight, cost, and coverage, I don't think you can beat the Top 10 series. They are ideal for a few days' stay, but might be a bit lacking if you're in a particular city for a week or more. It has been all we've needed for the basis of our Rome and Venice trip planning. The hotel recommendations are a bit outdated and bare-bones, but there's always TripAdvisor and Venere for more up-to-date and detailed info. The maps are also outstanding--they've made my StreetWise maps basically obsolete (for comparison, StreetWise maps cost almost as much as this book).

Detractors may quickly scoff at the whole idea of boiling everything down to "just a top 10", but keep in mind that there are numerous "top 10 lists" throughout the book, covering many categories. The idea here is to give tourists--especially first-timers--an overview of the major sights and to provide them a basis for which to explore further, based on specific interests. Used as such, I don't think you'll find a better travel guide.

Born in Australia, Shirley Hazzard first moved to Naples as a young woman in the 1950s to take up a job with the United Nations. It was the beginning of a long love affair with the city. Battered by World War II, Naples would remain for decades one of the most violent and impoverished places in Italy, but in its passion, vivacity, and beauty, the city still justified the loving words written about it by Goethe, Byron, and other literary travelers over the centuries.
            The Ancient Shore collects the best of Hazzard’s writings on Naples, along with a classic New Yorker essay by her late husband, Francis Steegmuller. For the pair, both insatiable readers, the Naples of Pliny, Gibbon, and Auden is constantly alive to them in the present: “The ghosts of this region are too many, and too vital, to sadden us,” Hazzard writes. “Rather, they create a company, ironic and benign, to which we ourselves may ultimately hope to belong.” With Hazzard as our guide, we encounter Henry James, Oscar Wilde, and of course Goethe, but Hazzard’s concern is primarily with the Naples of our own time—often violently unforgiving to innocent tourists, but able to transport the visitor who attends patiently to its rhythms and history. I bought this book for my son before our trip to Italy, in which we spent a week in Rome. My son just turned 5 before our trip and I homeschool. We read this book and looked at the beautiful pictures before going. It was a wonderful book! After reading the book together, he looked forward to seeing the Coleseum and throwing the coin in the Trevi Fountain and eating some gelato. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning on visiting Rome with children between the ages of 4-8. Prepares and excites child for what they will see. Then afterward is a good reminder of their vacation. My son will still pull out his 'This is Rome' book!

With the breathless anticipation that seduced her readers to fall in love with Venice and then Tuscany, Marlena de Blasi now takes us on a new journey as she moves with her husband, Fernando, to Orvieto, a large and ancient city in Italy's Umbria. Having neither an edge to a sea nor a face to a foreign land, it's a region less trampled by travelers and, in turn, less accepting of strangers. So de Blasi sets out to establish her niche in this new place and to win over her new neighbors by doing what she does best, cooking her way into their hearts. (Her recipes are included.)

Rich with history and a vivid sense of place, her memoir is by turns romantic and sensual, joyous and celebratory, as she searches for the right balance in this city on the hill, as well as the right home—which turns out to be the former ballroom of a dilapidated sixteenth-century palazzo.

De Blasi meets and makes friends with an array of colorful, memorable characters, including cooks and counts and shepherds and a lone violinist, and their stories, too, become a part of the tapestry of life that she weaves for herself in Orvieto. With a voice full of wonder, she brings to life these engagingly quirky people and the aloof, almost daunting society that exists in Umbria. Not since Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence has a writer so happily succeeded in capturing the essence of a singular place and in creating a feast for readers of all stripes.

Without Reservations by Alice Steinbach looked like a good book as I strolled through Barnes n Noble bookstore one afternoon. So I bought it and couldn't wait to get home and start reading it. I think I got maybe halfway through it before the sheer boredom nearly knocked me out. I have several issues with this book and I'm going to address all of them.

First, I am 30 years old. The writer of this book is potentially in her 40s or 50s and I wasn't too interested or excited by her lifestyle. Separated with kids is not appealing to me. There was not even a remote stitch of sensualness to her character - to me, it was reading the boring travels of a middle aged woman - and sometimes, it felt like she was already in her 70s.

Second, no one I know travels to Europe and just walks into cafe's and meets and makes friends that easily. As much as I'd like to talk to others, I'm also very careful when I'm in a foreign country. I found it hard to believe that she made all these perfect friendships everywhere she went.

Third, the Japanese man she had a "relationship" with. It was never outright stated whether they had sex and most of the time she spent describing scenery when they were together. A virtual sleep fest. Again, this made the author appear to be in her 70s.

Fourth, once she left Paris - I tried to continue reading on for the London and Italy journeys but I must admit the lack of dialogue and overall lack of interest kept me from doing this. She spent eight pages being ill and talking about that...and I was bored to tears.

I recently travelled for business and brought the book with me in the hopes I could finish it on the plane. I could barely read through it and had wished instead that I bought a glossy magazine. As I exited the airport, I threw the book away. $14.95 ill spent dollars and I refuse to tolerate that.

I will not buy anything further from this author.
