Rough Guide has really captured these two little countries 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I traveled to Belgium in 1999 on a whim, for a long weekend in Antwerp, with about three days' notice. It was the best trip to Europe I've ever made. First, let me give you five really good reasons to go to Belgium and Luxembourg.

1) Since they are somewhat off the beaten path (with the possible exception of Brugge (Bruges), in Flanders), they're cheap. You can get top quality accommodations, food, and beer for about half what you would expect to pay for similar quality in Paris, Cologne or Amsterdam.
2) If well-preserved, but still functioning, medieval towns are your thing, consider this for a moment: Antwerp, Brugge, Ghent, Namur, Mechelen, Leuven. Any questions?
3) The best beer on earth, period.
4) Small enough to get anywhere within two hours, and entirely realistic to tour on a bicycle.
5) More linguistic, cultural, artistic and geographic diversity crammed into a small space than any other country in the world. You get Dutch, French, German, and maybe even a little Spanish.
6) A courteous and helpful service ethic. Belgians love tourists!

And, of course, there are also five good reasons to buy this guide rather than other guides.

1) Essential historical, cultural and literary contexts that explain these small countries' somewhat confusing, multi-ethnic histories.
2) Encyclopedic coverage of all the cities, towns and important natural sites, including insightful historic and practical information.
3) Immediately up-to-date listings.
4) More substance than style. Rough Guides are intentionally that way.
5) A "not to miss" section that is well researched and looks beyond the obvious.

With mighty Brugge right next door, I still think incredible Ghent gets the short end of the stick. Some of the writing is a bit stale in this regard. For me, the hoards of tourists in Brugge make the experience in Ghent that much more authentic. There's nothing like falling into a Ghent pub at about 4:30PM for a Duvel, and staying on until you forget where you are. It's awesome.

If you don't buy the book, go anyway. And if you go to Belgium and spend all your time in Brussels, shame on you:)

Editorial Review:

The Rough Guide to Belgium and Luxembourg is a pleasingly different guide that stands out for uncovering hidden gems and quaint surprises, providing travellers with all they need to know to make the most of their time in these two countries.

The guide is packed with details for every attraction from the art galleries of Bruges to the forests of Ardennes and provides revealing background information behind the art, history and politics and most importantly, the low-down on Belgium’s best beers.

Take the hassle out your trip by using Rough Guides’ detailed maps, concise practical advice and discerning reviews of handpicked restaurants and accommodation. This new edition includes even more photos to really inspire your trip.

A Travel Guide Without a Focus 2 out of 5 stars.
24 of 30 people found this review helpful.

When I first started travelling to Europe 25 years ago, the Frommer guides were like beacons. They had a very definite goal in mind: To let you enjoy Europe for $XX dollars a day. Their books were fun and informative; but somewhere along the line, the Frommer people lost touch with their leadership.

When you try to write a book for everybody, you wind up writing for nobody. Let us take accommodations as an example: They are classified as Expensive, Moderate, and Inexpensive. Now I am not on public assistance by any means, yet I can barely afford Frommer's Inexpensive accommodations, which average around more than $100 a night.

There are guidebooks which are good at accommodations and restaurants but not on sights; and there are others (like the superb DK Eyewitness Guides) which concentrate on the sights. I am hard put to place Frommer on this spectrum. In the Netherlands, he downplays the Zuider Zee Museum in Enkhuizen and the Open Air Museum in Arnhem, yet spends 3 chapters on Luxembourg, including one on "Planning a Trip to Luxembourg." Hello! When was the last time you got the wife and kiddies mobilized for a fun filled 3 week vacation in the tiny Duchy of Luxembourg?

On the plus side, the "Best of..." lists are a useful counter to the general lack of emphasis in this guidebook.

If you were visiting the U.S., you would want a guidebook to show you why you might want to spend more time in New York than Youngstown. Once the best of guidebook series, Frommer has been reduced to cataloguing sights. Where's the excitement? Not here.

Editorial Review:

  • A highly informative guide to a great trip in the Low Countries
Leads travelers to the best of the Netherlands (almost 1 million North American visitors in 2001), Belgium (capital of the European Union and headquarters of NATO), and Luxembourg (which has more Michelin-starred restaurants per square mile than any other country)
  • Delivers the scoop on top cultural attractions in Brussels, Bruges, Amsterdam, Luxembourg City, and other urban centers
  • Reveals the best local experiences, from the forests and resorts of Belgium's Ardennes and the wine trail of Luxembourg to the windmills, tulip fields, and carnival celebrations of Holland
  • Thoroughly updated to reflect the latest changes in hotels, dining, and attractions

The worst Lonely Planet I have read so far ! 2 out of 5 stars.
25 of 27 people found this review helpful.

As much as I am faithul to Lonely Planet guidebooks, I was shocked by reading their edition of Belgium & Luxembourg. Not only did we have to wait 2004 to have a LP guidebook for those 2 countries (which must be after about all other regions in the world, even Antarctica, Papua New Guinea and tiny tropical islands), but it's not even half satisfying.

They should have kept the previous title "Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp", as there is frankly not much about the rest of the country. For instance, Belgium has some 3000 castles, but for some reason only 2 (yes, a miserable 2 !) are listed in the Lonely Planet. Same sparsity for the abbeys. Then, the book is heavily centered on Brussels and Flanders, as if the author didn't know more about Wallonia than the average occasional tourist. No mention of towns like Huy, Ciney or Gembloux - in fact they are not even on the guide's map ! No mention of the beautiful stone villages of the Condroz and Meuse Valley. It's like if they had written a guidebook about England without writing about the Cotswolds, Mendips and the country's many castles and stately homes ! It seems that the author is more interested in finding the best pubs and clubs in Antwerp than in historical and cultural sightseeing. There is more than lots of beer and legal drugs in Belgium !

Michelin Green Guides - accept no substitutes! 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

We have numerous guides for Belgium (because we live here) and there's nothing like the Michelin guide. It's the only one that really delves into the details of the architecture and history of the many fantastic buildings here, and it provides thoughtful and well-planned circuits for tourism. It's for the visitor who really wants to know the when-who-whys of what they see. (But you can't plan your light-hearted shopping visits with this book. You'll need a second guidebook for that.)
Too bad they switched to these new 'updated' book covers. The old ones had more class!

Classic Michelin 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just received my copy, but I have not yet used it while traveling.

It looks like this 2007 edition is up to the standards of the classic green guides, dense with cultural information, printed on fine quality paper, and in a wonderful format easy for toting along and reading on a train.

However, it's not vinyl bound as Amazon's listing states...it appears to be a paperback (which is what Michelin's own site admits to). It's just fine for traveling, but while other companies are moving to plasticized bindings that are water proof and wear well after being shoved into backpacks and backpockets, Michelin seems to have taken a small step back. Don't misundertand, the quality of binding is excellent, it would just be a little bit more excellent if the cover were really vinyl. Also, no map is included (as they did with green guides in the old days), but that's not a big loss given the many small but fine maps inside.

This book is a pleasure to hold and read.

Editorial Review:

This revised title in the Michelin green guide series supplies details of Belgium and Luxembourg for the discerning traveller who wishes to visit several regions in one trip.

Editorial Review:

This new Bradt guide will be the first English-language guidebook to focus exclusively on the world’s only Grand Duchy. This micro-state is home to the rolling forests of the Ardennes, hill-top medieval castles, a string of museums, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and one of Europe’s smallest wine-growing regions. With first-class accommodation and more Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than anywhere else on earth, this is tourism at its finest.

Plan your trip NOW! 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 34 people found this review helpful.

What is wonderful about this book is that not only do you get detailed maps with good directions, but there are also overview maps so that you have a sense of where you are in the countries. Everything that you need for a great cycling trip is included, transportation to and within the countries, a few accomodations (and especially where there are no accomodations), noteworthy sites, restaurants and prices. The routes are generally circle routes with side trips and also connect with each other with both total mileage for the whole circle and sectional mileages. Because this book is well organized with excellent maps - I will definately go to Benelux for a leisurely cycle tour - and probably more than once.

Editorial Review:

Cycling the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg leads cyclists through these extremely bicycle friendly countries on two wheels. The routes meander along canals, past windmills, through rolling hills and quaint villages. Included is information on weather, terrain, sightseeing, rentals plus practical information on places to stay and eat.

For the person planning to cycle for two days or two months, this book, the only English language cycling guide to these three countries, is the ideal companion.

Written from a British point-of-view. 3 out of 5 stars.

If you live in the USA, this is a fine book to get you pointed in the right direction. However the book is really written for British or Irish persons. Most of the information is dependant on your being a citizen of an EU nation.

Complete information and just what I needed 5 years ago 4 out of 5 stars.

I like the information that is presented in this book: history, culture, jobs, relocation, business...etc. It is well presented and organized. Although the author is speaking to his British folks, it can be used for Americans just fine. The only drawback is that it is 5 years old, so I hope it is still relevant today.

Authoritative information for those moving to another country. Perfect for students going to school abroad or business people who have been transferred, the Live & Work series is an indispensable source of information on living in another country.

complete 5 out of 5 stars.

very complete, the classification by stars is very useful to schedule the attractions. It's very clear, well separeted and easy to read and browse.

I reccomend it.

useful guide for the Low Countries 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Having just returned from a visit to the Netherlands and Belgium, we found this paperback guide to be very useful, particularly in regard to day trips and sites a bit off the beateb track. While it is easy to find information about popular sites, we often got the lowdown on less well-known places such as Kasteel de Haar in the Netherlands, a great castle which we didn't read about anywhere else. We didn't stay at any of the listed hotels, but did use restaurant recommendations with success. Appendices on history were well written and fun too. Recommended.
