Good at what it does 4 out of 5 stars.

Yes, as the prior review mentions, the road info may not be accurate... but there's a lot more to this book. I live in Lisbon and recommend it to all our visitors as it has excellent info on making your way through Sintra, Belém, Tavira, etc. If you're a first-time visitor looking for insider-type tips on the "highlights" of Portugal, this book is worth considering. (It is limited to a few key Portuguese cities/sites, so don't expect an overview of everything in this beautiful country.)

Editorial Review:

Useless product 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In Kindle product format it is virtually useless. Mostly Wikipedia descriptions, no prices, no hotels, one restaurant in Lisbon. No intercity mileages. Climatology useless. Maps are unreadable.
Zero detailed guide book information. Useful only for someone who has just found out there is a country called Portugal.

I thought it was "Mobile Travel Guide to Portugal", not a cut and paste of disjointed information called a "MobileReference". A bad purchase, and an awful travel guide. I want to return it.

Journey to Portugal Review 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I am reading this book and am laboring through it hoping it will get to something interesting or useful because I am planning on traveling through Portugal later this year. So far it has been very boring. I don't get a great insight of Portugal's history or culture. It is mostly a travelogue of his town by town personal encounter with little to relate. So far its been very disappointing and I feel like its a waste of time.

Editorial Review:

When José Saramago decided to write a book about Portugal, his only desire was that it be unlike all other books on the subject, and in this he has certainly succeeded. Recording the events and observations of a journey across the length and breadth of the country he loves dearly, Saramago brings Portugal to life as only a writer of his brilliance can. Forfeiting the usual sources such as tourist guides and road maps, he scours the country with the eyes and ears of an observer fascinated by the ancient myths and history of his people. Whether it be an inaccessible medieval fortress set on a cliff, a wayside chapel thick with cobwebs, or a grand mansion in the city, the extraordinary places of this land come alive.
Always meticulously attentive to those elements of ancient Portugal that persist today, he examines the country in its current period of rapid transition and growth. Journey to Portugal is an ode to a country and its rich traditions.

Not up to Lonely Planet's usual standard 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

After having tried a few other guidebook series, I am back to Lonely Planet, as these are simply standard-setting in terms of travellers' reference.

But this is the exception that confirms the rule (along with Lonely Planet Iceland & Faroes). Though published last year, so much of the basic information is not up-to-date - and several recommendations seem like an absolute mystery as they in no way live up to Lonely Planet's usual criteria.

Just too many times I found myself planning according to the book's information and recommendations, and ended up finding nothing or not finding the expected. The examples are too many to be ust coincidence and 'because things change'. I will therefore get rid of this one, and try Footprint or The Rough Guide next time I go to Portugal.

Yet, my critical rating of this guidebook should also be seen in the light of my high expectations, as Lonely Planet - mostly - does set the standard. Try again - new edition.

Lisbon, benefiting from an influx of funding from the EU, has reemerged on the world stage as a destination for those seeking the cultural experience of Southern Europe. While it still has a patina of wear and retains an air of shabby chic, renovation and new development are mixing the past with the present to create an alluring juxtaposition of hip boutique hotels in old medieval quarters.

The magnificent Praça do Commercial by the river Tejo is the center of the city and reflects the atmosphere of this historic maritime center. Heading east, you’ll walk through the Alfama with its Moorish past, and up the rising hillside to the dominating presence of the castle of St. George. The pastel houses of the Bairro Alto line up like sunwashed Easter eggs. There's a terrific panoramic view from the park on Rua de San Pedro that shouldn't be missed. Additional must see visits are to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with one of the best art collections in Europe, and to Bélem to see the Cultural Centre, and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, the monastery commemorating Portugal’s seagoing superiority.

Take the metro D line or a taxi up to the Parque das Naçoes, home of Expo ’98 and now a splendid outdoor vista with shops, restaurants and one of the most stunning Aquariums on earth, the Oceanarium.

The STREETWISE® Lisbon map, including the Lisbon Area map, pulls all of these sites plus hotels, and metro stations together to help you navigate and enjoy your visit to Lisbon. The Lisbon Region map will guide you on day trips west of the city along the beautiful Costa Estoril to Cascais, Estoril and Sintra. And finally, a map of Portugal facilitates further exploration of the beautiful countryside.

Truly excellent guide 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I gave this guide to my daughter and son-in-law who were staying in Lisbon for a week and they said it was indispensible. They used it for restaurants, sites, and shopping. She had brought other guides with her but none, she said, were as good as this one.

It's OK at best 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The map and metro sections are nice, but the publication lacks associated background information. While it does list the top 10's in different categories in fairly decent fashion, it lacks data tie ins for transportation and sight viewing decisions. Good, but not great.

This map is great! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Great map for travel. Folds to 9 3/4 x 4". Is made of a very thin waterproof vinyl material. Colors are bright a vivid. Roads, highways, and points of interest are very well marked. There is an extensive city index, map key and mileage guage. Even small towns are noted on the map. Map arrives in a folder. I was very pleased with this map.

Good Map 5 out of 5 stars.

It appears to be an excellent map, but experience has taught us that actually using it is the definitive proof....how much detail it contains. We have yet to use it. However the material is sturdy and waterproof.

Editorial Review:

The Rough Guide Map of Spain and Portugal combines clear modern mapping and bang-up-to-date research, and is the essential companion to anyone travelling around these two neighbouring countries. Whether you're exploring the Moorish monuments of Andalucia or Portugal's miles of Atlantic coastline, the Rough Guide Map provides invaluable information to help you find your way. The map is printed on waterproof and rip-proof Polyart paper, and includes detail on everything from road numbers and campsites to beaches and airports.
