Meaning of Christmas: Jesus or Santa? 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book does a really great job of acknowledging the true reason we celebrate Christmas - Jesus' birth - while not downplaying any of the other holiday traditions our culture has become accustomed to. It does not say that Santa does not exist (for those fearful parents whose children still "believe") but suggests that Santa is a reminder of attributes that God cares about and wants us all to possess. The author goes further than saying "Christmas is about Jesus being born"; she also talks about who Jesus is and why God sent him to earth. I have a feeling this will become a Christmas Classic at our house - even if only because "mom" likes it!

Editorial Review:

As Little Cub and her family prepare to celebrate the most special day of the year, the curious young polar bear begins to wonder…
“Who invented Christmas?”
Mama’s answer only leads to more questions like “Is God more important than Santa?” So she and Little Cub head off on a polar expedition to find God and to see how he gave them Christmas. Along the way, they find signs that God is at work all around them. Through Mama’s gentle guidance, Little Cub learns about the very first Christmas and discovers that…
Jesus is the best present of all.
This enchanting tale provides the perfect opportunity to help young children celebrate the true meaning of Christmas and to discover how very much God loves them.

great book 5 out of 5 stars.

Great simple illustrations with bold colors - neat thinking - leaves age-old question unanswered, which does come first - chicken or the egg?

Fun, Fun, Fun 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book...fun for both kids and adults. I love how the pages have cut outs that clue you in to the next page. Fun!

My Daughter's Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Not a night has gone by in weeks where my 18 month old daughter has not picked out First the Egg as one of two books to be read to her before bedtime. The simplicity of the imagery has taught her the vocabulary within the book along with the relationships, including fairly abstract concepts for a toddler (such as the difference between paint and picture). Overall, this is the best picture book puchase I've made.

Editorial Review:

WHICH CAME FIRST?  The chicken or the egg?  Simple die-cuts magically present transformation-- from seed to flower, tadpole to frog, caterpillar to butterfly. The acclaimed author of  Black? White! Day? Night! and Lemons Are Not Red gives an entirely fresh and  memorable presentation to the concepts of transformation and creatiity.  Seed becomes flower, paint becomes picture, word becomes story--and the commonplace becomes extraordinary as children look through and turn the pages of this novel and winning book.

Too weird for my kids 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My kids just didn't get this book. There is no plot and the story (if you can call it that) is just too strange to enjoy. You don't feel sympathetic toward the pigeon, who seems to be talking to himself in a kind of psychotic/obsessive-compulsive rant. The illustrations are fun but I can't recommend this book when there are so many other wonderful children's books to be discovered.

No Fair 5 out of 5 stars.

Loved the book, 12 grandkids loved the book. Something I hear with that many Grandkids...No Fair. The Pigeon doesn't think it is fair that he can't drive the bus..he says "no fair" so we all got a kick out of it but Emma loved it best of all because she is the queen of No Fair.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. I also bought Out of the Nursery by Elizabeth Gauthier which is just amazing.

Editorial Review:

When the driver leaves the bus temporarily, he gives the reader just one instruction: "Don't let the pigeon drive the bus". But that pigeon tries every trick in the book to get in the driving seat. He whines, wheedles, fibs and flatters. Will you let him drive?

Wonderful story for adults and children of all ages 5 out of 5 stars.

I have just finished this book.

Wilson Rawls has written a timeless classic that will entertain and delight readers of all ages. I wish I had read this story earlier.

Wilson Rawls could have been the second coming of Homer.

The religious theme was quite interesting.

Exactly what I was looking for 5 out of 5 stars.

This was my favorite book as a child and I was very happy to purchase it to read for myself and also for my children.

Boy and his dogs 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I used to read this book over and over again as a child and it's sad that I went for so many years without touching it! Upon rereading I was swept away to the backwoods South in a boyhood adventure of hunting, childhood, and friendship.

On the surface it appears to be the usual boy-and-dog story, but it is so much more gripping as it explores Billy's relationship with the world around him as he grows up in a classic coming-of-age scenario.

It's fun, gripping writing full of personality and passion for the South and its characters, and full of such honest emotion it will blow you away.

Editorial Review:

First published in 1961, a modern-day classic for children follows the friendship between a boy and his two dogs as they search out adventure along the dark hills and river bottoms of Cherokee country. Reprint.

Wonderful book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We really enjoyed this book and reading it to our daughter - who is nearly three. It not only captivates her imagination but is full of wonderful old fashioned values - particularly of being "liked for the person who you are". I would highly recommend it.

The world's most adorable bear 4 out of 5 stars.

I actually have not read this book for years and was delighted when I found it again. For something so simple, it certainly packs a respectable adventure and plenty of heart. Corduroy is an adorable bear, and his department store is very nostolgic.

A GEM!!! MY ALL TIME FAVORITE CHILDREN'S BOOK (moooooore stars!!!!) 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I got this one as a child, back in the sixties. My copy is in Dutch and although a little weathered it's not falling apart yet.
The copy I'm reviewing here is a reprint that misses several spreads, but sad though it may be, if you don't know about it you won't miss it.
Richard Scarry shows different "people" (animals in clothes), all kinds of professions, how they interact and how one depends on the other. And in doing so he introduces a child to society where we all depend on one another.
More than anything else he was responsible that I grew up to be free minded and open spirited person. Whatever a human being does for a living, if he/she does it with love he will make your day.
A policeman, a baker, a newspaper man, a writer, photographer or singer, the postman, the bus driver. We all depend on one another. And as long as we try our best to understand that and accept and respect our fellow citizens we will be on the right path.
His drawings are world famous. They're sweet and funny without being too simplistic. No matter what family, the rabbits, the mice or the pigs, even the worm, they're all lovely characters with different personalities.
It has always been my first choice as a gift for kids.

Gameboy Alternative 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My 5 year old loves this book. If he had his way, he would play Pokemon all day every day on his game boy. This is a nice alternative that taps his imagination and creativity. He also tries to get others to draw with him so they have a group activity that is relatively quiet, until they start describing the battles. I highly recommend for any child who already loves other Pokemon activities.

Son's drawing perfect Pokemon! 5 out of 5 stars.

My son loves this book. He's really into drawing and loves the how-to-draw books, and this was no exception. Within minutes he was whipping up poke'mon from the pages of the book onto paper and making his own comic book of them. Great for any pokemon fan who loves to draw!

Editorial Review:

Everyone's favorite Caldecott honor-winning porcine and #1 Kris Cringle enthusiast is helping to make the season brighter than ever. Christmas is coming, and Olivia is incredibly busy. She has to wait for Santa, make sure dad sets up the tree, wait for Santa, watch mom make the Christmas dinner, wait for Santa, oversee the care with which the stockings are hung and, of course, OPEN HER PRESENTS! Do you see how hard it is to be so helpful during the holidays! A lovingly-told and lavishly-illustrated Olivia Helps With Christmas is the perfect stuffing for any stocking, and the newest star atop the Olivia series.

Olivia's Family Traditions
It did not matter how much discussion there was to be had with his editors during the process of creating Olivia Helps with Christmas, there was one thing that Ian Falconer was absolutely certain about... Santa Claus would appear NOWHERE in the book. Olivia and her brothers and sisters would do everything they could to get ready for Santa, and they sure would be anticipating Santa's arrival, but readers would not see the fabled Kriss Kringle. With all the ideas that were put on the table for this book, that was one Falconer would not stray from.

And with good reason.

This was to be a different type of Christmas book. A book about how a family celebrates Christmas, and how a lot of family holiday traditions really revolve around preparations. In fact, the reason the book has such a personal feel to it is because many of the traditions that Olivia and her family celebrate were taken straight from Ian's childhood memories: Being asked to set the Christmas table was a big honor for Ian (as it is for Olivia in the book). The caroling by the piano, the "Santa watch," the order in which things were done (tree up Christmas Eve, dinner, caroling, hanging stockings), even the phrase "warming your trotters by the fire"--all of it has roots in the Falconer home. And since Ian never did catch a glimpse of Santa at Christmas, neither could Olivia. It's for the best, really. Olivia likes to be the true star of her books--Santa would have met his match.

For your viewing pleasure: A bonus illustration of Olivia not available in Olivia Helps with Christmas!

my son loves it! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

my 5-yr-old son hasn't even seen this movie, but he did see previews and trailers which made him like the character wall-e. since he's just learning to read, i try to find books that are interesting for him (he's definitely out of the 'baby' book stage) but still easy enough to let him help me read.
this was perfect for him. not too short, and not too long, so it held his attention too.

A True Hero of our Times 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

It is refreshing to have a movie that doesn't tempt children to fight bad guys or jump off something and fly like a superhero. Wall-E keeps it simple and this Golden Book lets them remember how simple life can be no matter what we face.

Wall-E 5 out of 5 stars.

Tops my list of children's gifts to give 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What can be said about a book that speaks volumes, yet includes no printed words?

This stunningly illustrated, inspiring story of a boy who finds a magic camera at the seashore and becomes part of a unique chain of story tellers is an enveloping odyssey through time, seasons and truly magical destinations. Wiesner's illustrations are so whimsical they are transcendental, carrying even the most guarded reader into a beautiful world where one is willing to believe that giant starfish islands and underwater street scenes really do exist, simply because Wiesner was clever enough to imagine them. I'm not sure if this book is for children or adults, but both will delight in becoming a part of the author's serene, watery world.

Editorial Review:

A bright, science-minded boy goes to the beach equipped to collect and examine flotsam--anything floating that has been washed ashore. Bottles, lost toys, small objects of every description are among his usual finds. But there's no way he could have prepared for one particular discovery: a barnacle-encrusted underwater camera, with its own secrets to share . . . and to keep.

In each of his amazing picture books, David Wiesner has revealed the magical possibilities of some ordinary thing or happening--a frog on a lily pad, a trip to the Empire State Building, a well-known nursery tale. This time, a day at the beach is the springboard into a wildly imaginative exploration of the mysteries of the deep, and of the qualities that enable us to witness these wonders and delight in them.
