An engaging pop-up book on castles and knights 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Both my preschooler and I love pop-up books and we've been finding titles to add to our collection. I came across this Castle pop-up book at a local chain bookstore [retailing for about 6 bucks] and snapped it up! We were both extremely pleased as the book took us on a journey through a medieval castle and its inner workings. Each page unfolds a pop-up and there are also inserts on each page that one can open to reveal smaller pop-ups [this was a great joy for my little one], One learns about the various parts of a castle, where the different classes of people reside [it was a feudal system with people ascribed certain stations in life, and passed down through birth], One particular pop-up that I found fascinating [and which elicited lots of giggles from my little one] was the mini pop-up explaining how toilets worked in medieval times - so the man poops up above in his fine room, and a lowly peasant shovels it down below and cleans the pit - gross but informative!

Another feature I really liked was the pages that portrayed various people at work in their respective occupations - there was a pull the tab feature that showed how a man [atilliator] made a crossbow and a woman worked a spinning wheel.

The book also has a full page jousting pop-up scene where a pull-the-tab feature allows one to 'work' the jousters. This was something my daughter really enjoyed! The last pop-up scene features a feast and explains the various dishes, utensils etc used during a feast.

All in all, this is a wonderful pop-up book that not only entertains but educates as well. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

Over fifteen intricate pop-ups accompany Sabuda and Reinhart's fascinating text, which guides readers through the different aspects of life in a medieval castle. Readers will learn about knighting ceremonies, battles, and feasts. The true majesty of castles is fully realized when this book is opened to reveal a stunning 3-dimensional medieval world.

Loved it, Different Perspective, Not a Synopsis 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I went to a presentation by the author, I sat next to a kid who probably didn't think reading was cool, and going to see the author was less cool. I asked him which book he'd read, he said the Wednesday Wars. I said what did you think? He said it was good, you know, for a book. After the author finished discussing the Wednesday Wars and his inspiration for the book I elbowed the boy next to me and said What do you think now? He said I think I like, you know more than before.

This book is just what I like, it makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you think and it makes you smile. I read Macbeth for the first time in 7th grade, I had to read a play for school, and my dad handed me MacBeth and said I think you'll like this, I groaned heavily, but I read it, and then I read the rest of Shakespeare's plays. I got an A for being the only kid to tackle Shakespeare. I will leave all the other reviews to disect the plot for you. I think to really benefit from a book this good both the young adult and the parents should read it. As for Mr. Schmidt he is still one of my very favorite writers for young people, and I hope he writes for a very long time!

Editorial Review:

Seventh grader Holling Hoodhood has a tough year ahead of him. First of all, his teacher, Mrs. Baker, keeps giving him the evil eye. Second of all, the class bully keeps threatening to do Number 167 (and you don’t even want to know what Number 167 is). Third of all, his father keeps calling him ""the Son Who is Going to Inherit Hoodhood and Associates."" But things are changing in 1967, and while reciting his favorite curses from Shakespeare’s plays, Holling might just find the true meaning of his own story.

Surprising and endearing look at Bob Dylan 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

As pretty big Dylan fan, I admit I was not aware of this book, but then one day recently I saw this in my local library and of course picked it up immediately. The book was in the kids section of the library, I might add, and I only happen to see it by chance, walking by (my kids are grown and out of the house). I was quite intrigued.

"Forever Young" (40 pages) brings in essence 15 large illustrations (each spread over 2 pages) that illustrate certain aspects of Bob Dylan's life and songs, and it is a delight to look at. The book is obviously intended for young kids, to be read along with their parents, and to be introduced to the world (or at least certain aspects) that Dylan experienced in the early years. But for us adults, this book becomes a "Where's Walda" in a way, in that the illustrations contain a lot of "clues" as to Dylan songs and the sixties and seventies era. Illustrator Paul Rogers was kind enough to provide a summary guide of sorts at the end, explaining the illustrations, but emphasizing that he didn't explain all the clues, and to look for more in the illustrations. Nicely done.

In all, this is a welcome addition to the wealth of Bob Dylan books out there, in a very surprising and endearing kind of way. Highly recommended for adults and younger ones alike!

Editorial Review:

Since it first appeared on the 1974 album Planet Waves, "Forever Young" has been one of Bob Dylan's most beloved songs. Now award-winning artist Paul Rogers gives us a new interpretation of the lyrics. With images inspired by classic Dylan songs and pieces of his life, this is a bold and touching tribute to an anthem whose message will always stay forever young.

Choose the 1818 version 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Most editions of Mary Shelley's landmark book available today follow the heavily revised 1831 version. The impulse behind this trend is an honorable one (to present what is seemingly an author's "final revision"),but the 1818 version is preferable for many reasons. Looking back on her creation in later life, Shelley felt obliged to alter the book's focus in significant ways, adding what critic Marilyn Butler accurately describes as "long passages in which her main narrator, [Victor] Frankenstein, expresses religious remorse for making a creature..." The author sought to make the 1831 edition less controversial and thereby more palatable to the tastes of the reading public. The 1818 version is closer to Mary Shelley's original intentions, though it too, unfortunately, was filtered through the sensibilities of her husband, the poet Percy Shelley, who took many of his wife's rather straightforward passages and rendered them into his own more ornate and Ciceronian style. Still, the 1818 version remains more vital, more original, and less constrained by what the author believed would be acceptable to readers in 1830s England.

Editorial Review:

This is one of the best known horror stories ever. Victor Frankenstein, a Swiss scientist, has a great ambition: to create intelligent life. But when his creature first stirs, he realizes he has made a monster. A monster which, abandoned by his master and shunned by everyone who sees it, follows Dr. Frankenstein with murder and horrors to the very ends of the earth.

I love Ed Emberley and the techniques that he uses to teach drawing.

This book is my favorite because it's packed with all kinds of things to draw. Gumball machines, people in action, animals, trucks, planes, you name it.

You really can draw your own little world.

This would be a great gift with some paper and markers for the young budding artist.

Fun for all! 5 out of 5 stars.

Need a drawing book? It doesn't matter what age you are, this is THE book for you. I first found it when I was in elementary school. Now, I teach pre-school, elementary, and above and still find ample use for this book.

It uses basic shapes and lines to create a world. Now I can really appreciate it because with these basic--and very drawable--tools I can help my students to create their own vision of things in a very simple and satisfying way.

You have everything you need in here, from vehicles to houses to plants to people. I have many of Ed Emberley's other books, but this one is the one you have to own.

For the price I cannot think of another book with the color, charm, or accessability as this one. BUY IT!

Editorial Review:

From airplanes and alligators to castles, cabooses, wheelbarrows, and witches, Ed Emberley shows children one way to draw more than 400 different things--so they can create a world of their own on paper. Full-color.

One of the Best Methods for the Early Beginner 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is one of THE BEST methods out there for the young guitar student learning to play pick style guitar. The book and enhanced C.D. are excellent instructional tools. I've used this book for a few years in private instruction and just started using it in my young beginners group guitar class with great success in both areas.

The text starts with three-string chords and progresses through various rhythmic combinations (though never using eighth notes) with the C,G,G7, and D7 chords. Along the way the student will play some original and folk songs (i.e. three blind mice, etc). The melodies are provided on the accompanying C.D. and are quite easy to pick out.

The second half of the book focuses on learning to read standard notation. (NOTE: there is not TAB) The text covers notes through the first three strings. As with the chord section the child will play various original melodies as well as famous classical and folk melodies (i.e. Ode to Joy, Jingle Bells, etc). In this section the student will play the chords they have learned previously along with the notes they are learning.

If you are using this book in private or group lessons you may want to introduce standard note reading alongside the introduction of chords, instead of moving sequentially through the book. As stated earlier there is NO TAB in this book which may turn some teachers off. After completing this book the student would understand the material roughly through the first half of Book 1 of either the Hal Leonard or Mel Bay Guitar Methods.

If you are looking for a method for classical guitar for the young this is NOT for you! I would highly recommend getting Classical Guitar for the Young by Jay Traylor. An even better book though difficult to get in the U.S. is The Guitarist's Way by British guitarists Peter Nuttall & John Whitworth.

Editorial Review:

Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course is a fun method that teaches kids to play songs on the guitar right away. Each lesson is explained in plain language that's easy to understand, with three irresistable guitar experts leading the way: a clever classical dog, one cool jazz cat, and a friendly alligator who loves the blues. They keep attention focused by pointing out what's important on each page and help students learn by making music fun! Students hear how the music should sound by listening to the included CD, which contains additional tools when played on a computer such as a chord dictionary and guitar tuner.

Book 1 teaches basic music symbols, how to read chord frames and strum three-string chords, and reading the notes in 1st position on the first three strings to play simple single-note melodies.

Book 2 covers four-string chords, the notes in first position on the 3rd, 4th and 5th strings, tempo markings, dynamic signs, and more!

ALWAYS A JOY TO READ. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

To be frank, I get a kick out of Silverstein's work. It is always a bit quirky, always takes a couple of readings to really "get," and is very entertaining while being quite insightful as to human nature. This work is no different from his other works, same quality, same odd way of looking at life, same delightful black and white drawings. Publisher's Weekly got it pretty right here, in their usual, rather snotty way, which is one of the few reviews I have ever agreed with them on. (except their little shot at some of his art that they felt may no be appropriate for kids...obviously the author of that review has never been around kids very much). This work consists of 171 pages of poetry rhymes and drawings. I first read Silverstein in Playboy magazine years and years ago when I wasted my time with such publications. I did not particularly care for him them, but over the years have developed quite a like for his work. I truely love this book and do highly recommend it.

So You Want To Be A Jedi? 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 18 people found this review helpful.

The release of Star Wars books for young people has always been related to a theatrical promotion. In a world that has a seen all six films, a new wave of DK Readers is much appreciated. It gives us comfort that even though the movies are finished, the Star Wars experience isn't completely 'done.' As the title suggests, "I Want To Be A Jedi" is a look into the Jedi Order. Jedi training, powers, lighsabers, the Council, mind tricks and equipment are all described. Beyond discussing the Jedi way in broad terms, focus is placed on Anakin Skywalker. "I Want To Be A Jedi" looks at Anakin's relationship with the Order, Padmé Amidala and Darth Sidious. A discussion of the Jedi and Anakin would be incomplete without mentioning the Sith. Darth Sidious, General Grievous and the Clone Wars are connected to the demise of the Jedi Order. While the content is suspiciously similar to "I Am a Jedi" and "I Am a Jedi Apprentice," the scope is more satisfying since it pulls together all six chapters of the saga. So while there's nothing new here, this is a great read for young fans that are still making the connections between the six acts. A glossary and index is included. In terms of the illustrations, the vast majority were lifted from the films. While the pictures are high quality, the writing is also good. This new series has books for most levels of elementary readers. Given the 48 page length and vocabulary level, this title is best suited to readers on a fourth or fifth grade level. "I Want To Be A Jedi" offers an exciting look at the Jedi Order.

Editorial Review:

Enter the Jedi Academy and find out what it takes to be a Jedi. How do the Jedi work with the Force? What is the Jedi Code? How do the Jedi make their light sabers? All these questions-and more-will be answered in I Want to Be a Jedi.

Find out all about the Dark Side and the Sith who wield power over it. Learn about evil Darth Sidious, Darth Maul and, of course, Darth Vader. Discover how the conflict began between the Jedi and the Sith. Beware the Dark Side has all the Dark Side details you could want to know!
