Pokemon: Ultimate Handbook 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My daughter has interests in many popular childhood games. I reviewed the content of this book to determine the appropriateness for children. The language is appropriate for children of all ages. There really is no educational value for this book, unless you consider memorizing each character, as my child has done.

This book is in full color and is an extensive catalog of every Pokemon character. The illustrations are fabulous. The text is organized into alphabetical order with the proper name, code name, pronunciation, possible moves, type of character, height, weight, and region of origin is detailed. The forms by which each character evolves (or does not evolve) is illustrated and what the respective names are for each stage is depicted. Special facts about each character are also given.

My daughter loves this book. How does she use it? She looks at the photographs and draws her favorite characters. She has also memorized the names of each character, special moves, and evolution of characters.

VERDICT

This makes a great gift or stocking stuffer for your Pokemon fan.

my son loves it! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

my 5-yr-old son hasn't even seen this movie, but he did see previews and trailers which made him like the character wall-e. since he's just learning to read, i try to find books that are interesting for him (he's definitely out of the 'baby' book stage) but still easy enough to let him help me read.
this was perfect for him. not too short, and not too long, so it held his attention too.

Much Needed 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a perfect vehicle to teach children what their feelings are and how to identify them. It helps take the chaos out of their anxiety and also gives parents the words they need to explain what is happening.I have found that children struggling with anxiety and anger benefit from a multimodal approach. It is imperative to also arm them with relaxation techniques and self talk techniques. I recommend Angry Octopus(a relaxation story) and A Volcano in my Tummy(great lessons)along with What to do When You Worry Too Much. Watching your child's worries dwindle and their confidence grow is life changing.Angry Octopus: An Anger Management Story, introducing active progressive muscular relaxation and deep breathing (Indigo Ocean Dreams)A Volcano in My Tummy: Helping Children to Handle Anger

Editorial Review:

What to Do When You Worry Too Much is an interactive self-help book designed to guide 6-12 year olds and their parents through the cognitive-behavioral techniques most often used in the treatment of generalized anxiety. Metaphors and humorous illustrations make difficult concepts easy to understand, while prompts to draw and write help children to master new skills related to reducing anxiety. Engaging, encouraging, and easy to follow, this book educates, motivates, and empowers children to work towards change. Includes a note to parents by psychologist and author Dawn Huebner, Ph.D.

Spellbound 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My seven year old daughter was spellbound by the prose and the drawings in this wonderful version of the Greek myths.

The first book I bought with my own money! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this all by myself when I was eight years old (25 years ago!) and it's still here on my shelf, musty, dusty, taped together and well-loved. It was great as a starting foundation for cultural literacy - for learning enough to understand Classical themes in art or other literature. The illustrations are so engrossing and to this day when I open the book I find that I remember the tiniest details of every drawing. This is a book I would enthusiastically give to any child.

my favorite elementary library time book EVAR 5 out of 5 stars.

from the first illustration of Gaia this book had me at hello! i checked this book out time and time again from the school library and poured over its pictures and stories of the Greek Gods and Goddesses. It was from then on that i wanted to rename myself Persephone!
a must for imaginative and curious children!

Mighty Zeus, with his fistful of thunderbolts, Athena, goddess of wisdom, Helios the sun, greedy King Midas--here are gods, goddesses, and legendary figures of ancient Greece brought to life in the myths that have inspired great literature and art throughout the ages. Illustrations throughout.

A Great Work 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am a soldier with the US Army who has been deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom twice and Operation Enduring Freedom once. And yes I have lost some close friends to these wars.

I must say this is one of my favorite books on war that I have read next to the Red Badge of Courage. Yes soldiers are opened minded, I do know that this book focuses on the darker side of War and is considered an Anti-War Novel. I do not want to go into specific details of the book; it is something you should experience for yourself.

I will say that it is interesting how this is the German Army in World War I and yet there are many similarities of things that I have gone through that are almost 100 years later in the American Army. These are the same trials and tribulations that a soldier is put through no matter what time period you are in, the interpersonal relationships where the people around you become your family and the tragedy that you experience.
And the fear of being in combat and how after awhile you become numb from it.

"This does not mean that you are war mongers. On the contrary, the soldier, above all other people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war. But always in our ears ring the ominous words of Plato that wisest of all philosophers, 'Only the dead have seen the end of war." General Douglas MacArthur

Editorial Review:

ONE OF TWELVE TITLES IN VINTAGE'S A FORMAT WAR PROMOTION The Greatest Novel about the First World War and an International Bestseller All Quiet on the Western Front is probably the most famous anti-war novel ever written. The story is told by a young 'unknown soldier' in the trenches of Flanders during the First World War. Through his eyes we see all the realities of war; under fire, on patrol, waiting in the trenches, at home on leave, and in hospitals and dressing stations. Although there are vividly described incidents which remain in mind, there is no sense of adventure here, only the feeling of youth betrayed and a deceptively simple indictment of war - of any war - told for a whole generation of victims.

Classic adventure 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a story I have read many times since I was a child. I'm sure every little girl goes through that phase where she would like nothing more than to be a wild maiden living alone with the animals, and that is probably the basis of a lot of appeal. But that does destract from the fact that this is an incredibly written, incredibly moving story of survival and the overcoming of loneliness.

Based on an old story of a woman who survived for 18 years by herself, this tells the story of a young girl who is left on an island after her people build ships and leave their homeland. She jumps off the ship to rescue her brother, who subsequently dies. While waiting for ships to return for her, she dominates the island by herself with animals for company.

The description is real and powerful, and O'Dell provides a strong character. It's great adventure and touching drama.

Finn & Sawyer Part 2 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Everyone should read or re-read this classic. Most of us read it in school, probabaly not in its entirety. Schools struggled then and now with the use of the N word, although teenage boys in the 1830's clearly would never have heard a synonym.

These adventures are a classic. The royals were a hoot, how many failed fraudulent enterprises could they invent before the inevitable tar and feathering. Huck and Jim are on the run from an abusive father and the law, respectively, and Twain shows all people have a great deal in common, in spite of theories prevalent in the antebellum era.

I'm not sure why Tom Sawyer needs to show up to conclude this thing. The ending could work without him, maybe Twain not sure that Finn could carry the book or film alone.

Great book! When addressing controversy think of context. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I can't say more on the plot because it's quite obvious what the plot is just from illustrations of the novel. But on the "controversial" aspect of the novel involving the excessive use of the N word, people have to think of the time period that Twain is writing about and when the novel was published.
The novel takes place in Missouri (a slave border state) in the 1830s. We use the term African-American or black now. Before that it was Afro-Americans, coloreds, Negr--s. The list goes on and on. The overall attitude was that as the terms changed the previous one was seen as more offensive than the progressive current one. Yes, that meant there was a time when the word "colored" was used by people who considered themselves progressive in terms of racial attitudes. But in the Antebellum South the use of the N word was thrown around quite easily. And persons added positive as well as negative adjectives to it. It's strange to imagine that. We today only think of it in a totally negative way. But even when Twain published the novel in the 1880s the word was unfortunately not yet out of fashion.
Also consider the way Twain writes of Jim, the runaway slave. While the knee-jerk reaction is that Jim is a total vaudevillian caricature of what the perception was of blacks in the Antebellum South, his relationship with Huck Finn was something to be viewed as progressive. Remember that a decade before the novel came out; Reconstruction was over and left things a mess in terms of race relations. There was a lot of bitterness in the South over the Civil War (probably the most destructive war at the time until WWI), and a whole generation of southern white men took it personally when they were expected to be on the same level in terms of voting rights and other things with men that was formerly human property. For us today "all men are created equal" is a statement of truth provided we all have a level playing field. But for many southern whites at the time this was hard to swallow. In an aristocratic agrarian society, some men are just superior to others. And in the Antebellum South, just below poor whites were blacks. This was the way things were in their society for over two hundred years and the Civil War didn't suddenly end that sentiment among the many. But for Twain to write of a kind of comradeship between a slave and a young white boy was definitely progressive.
Maybe Twain was hoping to reach a young generation raised by their bitter parents and discover that they could have friendships with blacks and not succumb to an entrenching separatist animosity that developed into the Jim Crow Era. Huck and Jim work together in schemes and have fun. This friendship (which is why Huck decides to do what he does on the journey) is what Twain emphasized in the journey down river. This was counter to the way whites were acting with and around blacks at the time (1880s).
I think it's clear based on a certain reading of the novel that Twain believed whites and blacks could and should get along. While today it may not be seen as "progressive", it was when it was first published.

Love it! 4 out of 5 stars.

I gave this to my daughter when she turned 5. It is a fun book, but helped my daughter express how she is feeling. There is a face in the back of the book that they can change to show different feelings. I recently bought two more of these books as gifts for little girls turning 5.

Feelings are oh-so important 5 out of 5 stars.

Recognizing our feelings and being able to name and claim them is so important to our emotional health. A meaningful book that travels through the variety of feelings a child may encounter in any day - from angry to joyful to confused to lonely to.... A wide range of feelings are included in this charming rhyme. This is a fun book which can start discussions about how we are feeling while emphazing to children that all feelings are valid. Children's Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Might be better for older children, but what 4 yr old has a boyfriend? 2 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my 3 year old and after one read I have put it away for a few years. Talk of boyfriends and crushes is something that can wait until she is a bit older. The illustrations are nice and the concept is good, but it is off the mark for the younger ones.

Superb and well done! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the third Warriors series and has completely lived up to my expectations! Warriors is an excellent book to try for children but can also please older children and teenagers as well. Now some people may think that Clans of Warrior cats is a silly idea but it is actually very well done so that you almost believe it's real and the characters become just like people to you...

Lionpaw, Hollypaw and Jaypaw are all apprentices in one of the four clans: Thunderclan. Lionpaw and Hollypaw are both training to be great warriors. But Lionpaw seems to be serious enough about his training to look to an evil cat for the answers and he may become a liar to his clan because of a certain friend he isn't allowed to meet with.
Jaypaw is completely blind and despite the fact that he wanted to become a warrior, is stuck training to be a medicine cat. He's been seeing visions that no other medicine cats can and may be able to walk in other cats dreams.

When a group of Windclan kits go missing, Windclan jumps to conclusions and may start a war with Riverclan just because of it. These three apprentices with the help of some other brave cats must find the kits before battles break out and cats die for no good reason...

Please read this book and maybe even all of the series. They are really quite excellent and many would enjoy them!

Editorial Review:

Lionpaw, Hollypaw, and Jaypaw—grandchildren of the Clan leader Firestar—are thriving as the newest ThunderClan apprentices. Yet with their new responsibilities come new experiences, new power . . . and secret dangers.

Lionpaw makes a friend—and a discovery—that must be kept hidden; Jaypaw learns a secret that could benefit ThunderClan only by bringing harm to others; and Hollypaw knows something that could avert a battle, if only she could convince the rest of her Clan. Prophecy looms, ominous forces threaten to tear them apart, and each young cat discovers darkness: in the past, in the Clans—and in themselves.
