The price is certainly right. I used this book to teach a high-school poetry class. The selection of Blake is the weakest part of it: the selections from Innocence and Experience aren't ample enough to give a real sense for the book, and exclude some lyrics that I just couldn't do without (e.g. the "Holy Thursday" of Experience). The complete lack of notes (which originally I thought of as a plus :->) led to some unnecessary pain for students -- I remember one attempted close-reading of "The Extinction of the Venetian Republic" which toiled slowly through the poem, dealing with mysteries that wouldn't have been mysterious at all if there had been even a brief note on the political context of the poem.

On the plus side, there is not a bad poem in the whole book: every rift is loaded with ore. And it's an attractive paperback, nicely typeset, comfortable in the hands: it doesn't feel like a cheapo-cheapo book, which you'd rather expect from the price.

Lord Byron was perhaps the most dazzling and influential figure of the Romantic movement. He was certainly the most colorful, controversial, and celebrated poet of his time. His poetic style is controlled, yet the sentiments expressed are passionate. He can be sad and despairing in one stanza, then ecstatically happy in the next, and it is these impulsive mood swings which made him no less contradictory in his beliefs and actions. He wrote some wonderful lyrical poems, but my favorite are his long poems, like "Don Juan." He is and was a captivating personality and a brilliant poet.

The poem is as sexy as the life of its author, who died fighting for Greek national independence and lived with joie de vivre manifested both within his distinguished career as a poet, his sexual trysts, and his eccentricities, which included party trick mug made from a human skull. The book is a monumental achievement, a literary aphrodesiac, a genuine specimen of romance and whit. Byron's voice speaks clearly, beguilingly, insouciantly and with authority from beyond the grave in this literary classic.

A legend in his own lifetime, Lord Byron stamped contemporary Western culture with the mark of his dark imagination, and his poetry has lost none of its iconoclastic power today. Without a doubt, this is the finest single-volume edition of Byron currently available. By omitting the rambling satirical romp "Don Juan" (widely available separately), editors Wolfson and Manning leave themselves enough space to provide a truly representative selection of Byron's greatest works. Jerome McGann's "Oxford Authors" volume is a strong competitor, and benefits from superior notes, but only this Penguin collection offers unabridged texts of the three Oriental Tales with which Byron followed "The Giaour"--"The Bride of Abydos," "The Corsair," and "Lara"--all of which are thrilling narratives, and indispensable for tracing the development of that towering figure of English Romanticism, the Byronic Hero. Thus, this edition presents (for the first time in one volume) a complete portrait of the Byronic Hero in his many guises, from vampire ("The Giaour") to pirate ("The Corsair") to necromancer ("Manfred") to fallen angel ("Cain"). It's hard to believe how many of the best poems in English are in this thin little book -- ninety poems for a dollar. I second the action of the Poetry Project in giving it free to lots of people. Buy one for your glove compartment, your office, your study, and your best reader friend!

This collection is divided into three sections, "Songs for the Open Road", "Sea, Rail and Sea", "Home, Rest, and Final Voyages". It contains many of the best- loved poems in the English language, poems not necessarily associated with subjects of Travel and Adventure, though they may touch upon them.
One of the great examples is an Emily Dickinson selection"

"There is no frigate
like a book
To take us
Lands away.

Nor any corvette
like a page
of prancing
Poetry.

This traverse
may the poorest take
Without the oppress
of Toll.

How frugal
is the Chariot
that bears a human soul.

The title poem is from Whitman, and it sets the tone for what should be a highly enjoyable vogage, of mind, heart and soul.

A fine collection of sonnets, including many if not most of the most familiar ones. Eight from Shakespeare, four from E. Browning, four from Frost, four from Hopkins, four from Longfellow. For me at least, a more appealing collection than another I recently purchased.

I needed a little reference with sonnet examples.
This fit the bill, and had some savory treats as well.
I am a bit time-greedy with my poetry reading, and a sonnet
is a fantastic way to get some of the best Shakespeare,
Shelley, Longfellow, Hardy, Frost, etc. distilled down
to a minute, even reading slowly.
It's great to flick open to a page
and see some masterful language on a time budget.
If you have little time, or haven't read poetry
for a while, this great little tome is fresh
entertainment. Read Shakespeare sonnets aloud
to the missus, and you'll both be entertained.
The sonnet bites back at the sound-bite!
No batteries needed, no compatibility problems,
no cell-tower fade on the train.
I love little books.. Try some today!

This is a neat little collection of some of Byron's poetry and letters, and a few critical articles and reviews of his work. It is a good place to start for anyone just getting interested in Byron's life and work.

I'll start off by saying that this is an excellent selection of Byron's poems, from my view, so the rating applies only to Byron's merits as a poet.

Byron is somebody who was ALMOST a great poet. He has some really good poems, some poems of true greatness, comparable to his superiors (Keats, Wordsworth, Blake, to limit myself to the Romantics), but he wrote a lot of crap too. Some of these poems are almost laughably bad, others are profound.

I didn't always think this. Back in high school, Lord Byron was by far my favourite poet. In fact, he was the first poet I ever liked, which speaks to his enchanting power over those who have yet been introduced to many poets. As time went on, and I began to read his better contemporaries (mentioned above) and poets of other eras who tower over him, his spell began to wane, and I began to view him as I view him now: as a poet who might have been great, but never quite got there.

Nonetheless, I recommend him, as he does have poems of value, and is good for studying the time period. Read him before you read the other Romantics (except Shelley, of whom I have never been that big a fan, though I admit I have yet to really read into him); reading him after becoming familiar with them will spoil your love for him! After you have read him, if you find him to your taste, read some Keats or Wordsworth for comparison. If you don't find him to your taste, read Keats or Wordsworth anyways. You will find in either case that there is an extra spark of magic in these latter two that is not present in Lord Byron.
