A pretty good anthology 3 out of 5 stars.

The price is certainly right. I used this book to teach a high-school poetry class. The selection of Blake is the weakest part of it: the selections from Innocence and Experience aren't ample enough to give a real sense for the book, and exclude some lyrics that I just couldn't do without (e.g. the "Holy Thursday" of Experience). The complete lack of notes (which originally I thought of as a plus :->) led to some unnecessary pain for students -- I remember one attempted close-reading of "The Extinction of the Venetian Republic" which toiled slowly through the poem, dealing with mysteries that wouldn't have been mysterious at all if there had been even a brief note on the political context of the poem.

On the plus side, there is not a bad poem in the whole book: every rift is loaded with ore. And it's an attractive paperback, nicely typeset, comfortable in the hands: it doesn't feel like a cheapo-cheapo book, which you'd rather expect from the price.

the shining star of Romanticism 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Lord Byron was perhaps the most dazzling and influential figure of the Romantic movement. He was certainly the most colorful, controversial, and celebrated poet of his time. His poetic style is controlled, yet the sentiments expressed are passionate. He can be sad and despairing in one stanza, then ecstatically happy in the next, and it is these impulsive mood swings which made him no less contradictory in his beliefs and actions. He wrote some wonderful lyrical poems, but my favorite are his long poems, like "Don Juan." He is and was a captivating personality and a brilliant poet.

Editorial Review:

Byron is regarded today as the ultimate Romantic, whose name has entered the language to describe a man of brooding passion. Although his private life shocked his contemporaries his poetry was immensely popular and influential, especially in Europe. This comprehensive edition includes the complete texts of his two poetic masterpieces Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and Don Juan, as well as the dramatic poems Manfred and Cain. There are many other shorter poems and part of the satire English Bards and Scotch Reviewers. In addition there is a selection from Byron's inimitable letters, extracts from his journals and conversations, as well as more formal writings.

Lord Byron is the King of Hearts 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The poem is as sexy as the life of its author, who died fighting for Greek national independence and lived with joie de vivre manifested both within his distinguished career as a poet, his sexual trysts, and his eccentricities, which included party trick mug made from a human skull. The book is a monumental achievement, a literary aphrodesiac, a genuine specimen of romance and whit. Byron's voice speaks clearly, beguilingly, insouciantly and with authority from beyond the grave in this literary classic.

Editorial Review:

Byron’s exuberant masterpiece tells of the adventures of Don Juan, beginning with his illicit love affair at the age of sixteen in his native Spain and his subsequent exile to Italy. Following a dramatic shipwreck, his exploits take him to Greece, where he is sold as a slave, and to Russia, where he becomes a favorite of the Empress Catherine who sends him on to England. Written in ottava rima stanza form, Byron’s Don Juan blends high drama with earthy humor, outrageous satire of his contemporaries, and sharp mockery of Western societies, with England coming under particular attack.

Byron at his best . . . 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

A legend in his own lifetime, Lord Byron stamped contemporary Western culture with the mark of his dark imagination, and his poetry has lost none of its iconoclastic power today. Without a doubt, this is the finest single-volume edition of Byron currently available. By omitting the rambling satirical romp "Don Juan" (widely available separately), editors Wolfson and Manning leave themselves enough space to provide a truly representative selection of Byron's greatest works. Jerome McGann's "Oxford Authors" volume is a strong competitor, and benefits from superior notes, but only this Penguin collection offers unabridged texts of the three Oriental Tales with which Byron followed "The Giaour"--"The Bride of Abydos," "The Corsair," and "Lara"--all of which are thrilling narratives, and indispensable for tracing the development of that towering figure of English Romanticism, the Byronic Hero. Thus, this edition presents (for the first time in one volume) a complete portrait of the Byronic Hero in his many guises, from vampire ("The Giaour") to pirate ("The Corsair") to necromancer ("Manfred") to fallen angel ("Cain"). Furthermore, Wolfson and Manning supply the complete text of "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" (the work that established Byron's reputation in his own lifetime), along with many other rousing verse romances, including "The Siege of Corinth," "The Prisoner of Chillon," and "Mazeppa," as well as a generous selection of Byron's most arresting shorter poems, such as "The Destruction of Sennacherib," "Promethus," and the nightmarish, end-of-the-world fantasy, "Darkness." Fans of Byron's ironic mode will welcome the inclusion of three of his satirical works; however, the strength of this volume rests on the fact that it presents Byron at his most Byronic. These are his most sublime creations--the works that defined the Romantic movement--and to read them is to discover anew why he is still ranked, throughout the world, as the greatest English-language writer after Shakespeare.

Editorial Review:

The quintessential Romantic, Lord Byron produced some of the most daring poetry of his time, collected here in this revised edition—the only widely available selection to include his own notes on the same page as the poetry.

It's hard to believe how many of the best poems in English are in this thin little book -- ninety poems for a dollar. I second the action of the Poetry Project in giving it free to lots of people. Buy one for your glove compartment, your office, your study, and your best reader friend!

This collection is divided into three sections, "Songs for the Open Road", "Sea, Rail and Sea", "Home, Rest, and Final Voyages". It contains many of the best- loved poems in the English language, poems not necessarily associated with subjects of Travel and Adventure, though they may touch upon them.

a fine collection of familiar sonnets 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A fine collection of sonnets, including many if not most of the most familiar ones. Eight from Shakespeare, four from E. Browning, four from Frost, four from Hopkins, four from Longfellow. For me at least, a more appealing collection than another I recently purchased.

Great intro and survey of sonnets 5 out of 5 stars.

I needed a little reference with sonnet examples.
This fit the bill, and had some savory treats as well.
I am a bit time-greedy with my poetry reading, and a sonnet
is a fantastic way to get some of the best Shakespeare,
Shelley, Longfellow, Hardy, Frost, etc. distilled down
to a minute, even reading slowly.
It's great to flick open to a page
and see some masterful language on a time budget.
If you have little time, or haven't read poetry
for a while, this great little tome is fresh
entertainment. Read Shakespeare sonnets aloud
to the missus, and you'll both be entertained.
The sonnet bites back at the sound-bite!
No batteries needed, no compatibility problems,
no cell-tower fade on the train.
I love little books.. Try some today!

Editorial Review:

This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Classic includes a glossary and reader's notes to help the modern reader more fully appreciate the richness and unique vision of these Romantic innovators. When, in 1798, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and other Romantic poems were published in Lyrical Ballads, the book did not immediately capture the public's imagination. Today, however, most modern critics consider the collection extremely important and influential-it ushered in what came to be known as the English Romantic Era in poetry and moved from the contrived and intellectual poetic language of the Enlightenment to a celebration of the simple, the pure, and the natural. The poems in this anthology represent, not necessarily the most famous, but certainly the best poetry produced by the six great English Romantic poets-Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats. These twenty-two poems reveal the heights of ecstatic inspiration, the depths of grief and utter desolation, and the ideologies of these mystics, revolutionaries, and free thinkers. Mini-biographies of the poets accompany their works and tell the stories of the fascinating, and often scandalous, lives of the modern world's first true literary celebrities

Editorial Review:

Truly the epitome of the Romantic Poet, Lord Byron traveled and loved throughout Europe and wrote picaresque verse that proved immensely popular to audiences of his day. The man whose name is synonymous with romance gave his life in the noble cause of Greek liberty at the young age of thirty-six.

Byron's love lyrics-like his epic works, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and Don Juan-cast light on his legendary amorous exploits. The poems range from his schoolboy imitation of Catullus, to the poems praising such early loves as Mary Chaworth and Theresa Macri, to the tender lyrics for his half sister, Augusta Leigh, and poignant reflections on a failed marriage in "Fare Thee Well." Byron's poetry reveals a complex mix of self-revelation and breadth of knowledge plus an artistically modern sensibility.

This selection of forty-four poems includes an introduction to Byron's life and notes on individual poems. Portraits of the various women in Byron's life contribute to this handsome collector's edition.

The Love Poems of Lord Byron: A Romantic's Passion is the seventh volume in a poetry series that already includes The Sonnets: Poems of Love by William Shakespeare, The Love Poems of John Donne, Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, A Poet to His Beloved: The Early Poems of W.B. Yeats, Sonnets from the Portuguese: A Celebration of Love by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and The Love Poems of John Keats: In Praise of Beauty.

A Near- Great poet 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I'll start off by saying that this is an excellent selection of Byron's poems, from my view, so the rating applies only to Byron's merits as a poet.

Byron is somebody who was ALMOST a great poet. He has some really good poems, some poems of true greatness, comparable to his superiors (Keats, Wordsworth, Blake, to limit myself to the Romantics), but he wrote a lot of crap too. Some of these poems are almost laughably bad, others are profound.

I didn't always think this. Back in high school, Lord Byron was by far my favourite poet. In fact, he was the first poet I ever liked, which speaks to his enchanting power over those who have yet been introduced to many poets. As time went on, and I began to read his better contemporaries (mentioned above) and poets of other eras who tower over him, his spell began to wane, and I began to view him as I view him now: as a poet who might have been great, but never quite got there.

Nonetheless, I recommend him, as he does have poems of value, and is good for studying the time period. Read him before you read the other Romantics (except Shelley, of whom I have never been that big a fan, though I admit I have yet to really read into him); reading him after becoming familiar with them will spoil your love for him! After you have read him, if you find him to your taste, read some Keats or Wordsworth for comparison. If you don't find him to your taste, read Keats or Wordsworth anyways. You will find in either case that there is an extra spark of magic in these latter two that is not present in Lord Byron.

Editorial Review:

Poet, celebrity, and revolutionary, Lord (George Gordon) Byron was one of the most influential and controversial figures of the first half of the nineteenth century, his distinctive, deeply felt work comprising one of the enduring high points of Romantic literature. From “Manfred,” with its evocation of the figure that came to be called the “Byronic hero,” to the melancholy “Childe Harold,” to the satirical masterpiece “Don Juan” (presented here in judiciously selected form), this Modern Library Paperback Classic includes all of the essential Byron.
