Beyond the Bowl: The Cereal Lover's Ultimate Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the place I turn to for ideas for my children's parties; there are so many wonderful cookies and healthy desserts in this book. We entertain frequently, and there is a snack mix chapter that I use all the time for appetizers. Guests often ask me to make the Mediterranean Munchies and Cowboy Caviar.

Editorial Review:

From corn flakes to shredded wheat to Cap'n Crunch, Beyond the Breakfast Bowl features more than 200 fast and fun recipes using everyone's favorite food--cereal! Line art throughout.

Lacking Creativity 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought a little booklet, years ago, probably had as many or probably more recipes for oatmeal as this one does. I think I got that little book from a special offer off of the Quaker Oatmeal Box. In comparison this little book is disappointing. Recipes which have mixins for a bowl of hot cereal is not what I am exactly after. I think most of us can figure that out so needless to say, I was not impressed with the breakfast section of this book. Some of the cookie and muffin recipes sound good. I did not like the fact that there did'nt seem to be any recipes using ground oats or oat flour. I think oat flour should have been vital in a book devoted to oatmeal. Oatmeal is pretty healthy and I feel there could of been a lot more creative ways to use it in this book.

Good recipes 4 out of 5 stars.

My wife saw an ad for this book in a magazine. We ordered it and she lost almost 30 lbs in 3-4 months just by changing our regular meals to whole grains. I do admit that in my opinion whole grain items do not have the taste appeal that 'white' items do (white bread, plain spaghetti, regular pasta etc...) but if you want to lose a few pounds, the book contains recipes that make whole wheat stuff taste decent. Oh, when I said she just changed our food to whole grain, that is what I mean. She didn't increase her exercises or anything, just changed to whole grain.

Editorial Review:

Risottos, those creamy Italian rice dishes, are becoming nearly as popular as pasta. They are traditionally made with arborio rice with vegetables, fish or meat added, and parmesan flakes stirred in at the last minute. They can be served in small portions as exquisite first courses, or made rich and hearty and served as robust main courses. This collection presents every risotto recipe that one is likely to need.

Editorial Review:

It seems safe to say that most Americans whose roots are not in Italy consider pasta the foundation of Italian cuisine (with the possible exception of those who don't see beyond pizza). There's justification in that, of course: In Italy pasta is indeed ever present, in hundreds of forms, served alone and in combination with just about any edible meat, plant, or seafood one can think of, and with an endless variety of sauces, even one named for she who practices the oldest profession.

But wait till you see the great dishes that Father Orsini has brought you from the farms and cooks of northern Italy, wonderful dishes based on-rice!

No matter what you think, rice was not brought to Italy by Marco Polo. The techniques of rice farming (and presumably some seeds or cuttings) came to Italy in the ninth century with the Arab invasion of Sicily. Rice farming prospered against great odds, thanks to the determination and hard work of Sicilian farmers and the money of the Sicilian elite. And even though Father Orsini's own roots are in the country's south, he readily concedes that northern Italy has raised cooking rice to an art.

This book will guide you through that art museum of Sicilian rice dishes, with everything from delicious soups (Minestre) to desserts (Dolci), a whole chapter on a fabulous selection of risotti (Risotto, that's right! How'd you guess?), and enough marvelous and often unsuspected rice dishes of many kinds to send you off to the store for a Great Big Bag of Rice. Father Orsini is an experienced cookbook author and an experienced chef, and his readers needn't fear that his recipes are difficult or complicated to follow. They taste really special, but the good father has made them as easy to put together as they are delicious to eat. The history of rice is a bonus for the intelligence; the recipes are the basic gift for your honest hunger. What more could you ask?

Ancient Grains 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Just the thing for anyone who wants to try eating a wheat-free or gluten-free diet. Comfort foods, main dishes, treats, and kid-friendly! Give one to a friend who has dietary restrictions for the holidays.

Editorial Review:

Ancient Grains is an alternative cookbook which is filled with recipes that have been family favorites for generations. These recipes have been adapted to use alternative flours such as spelt, oat, rice and sorghum rather than wheat. The recipes are divided into sections according to their uses, for example, the Family Meal Time section is full of every-day recipes that are appropriate for use at the dinner table, such as Boston Brown Bread. Invite a Friend Desserts are a bit more exotic, such as Dessert Crepes and Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie. This book also contains an alphabetical index of recipes, a list of resources for finding alternative flours, and two conversion charts, one for measurements and one for temperatures.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Best. Macro. Book. Ev-arrr!

Seriously. American food. Healthy. Delicious. Try cooking the succotash and yams and squash for *real* traditional Thanksgiving sides.

Every recipe I have tried in here is fantastic.

Except for the Zuni water balls. They stunk.

But don't let that stop you. This book rules. Easy to read, mostly easy to make, good for you, and delicious recipes you can add to your all-american repertoire! w00t!
