A wonderful little rice book 5 out of 5 stars.

I like rice. A lot. I value it almost as highly as my eyes, and possibly a bit higher than my hands.

I got this a few hours ago, so I haven't cooked from it, but I have sat around reading it. I like it. One recipe caught my eye for its oddness. It calls for thyme stems, with the leaves and flowers discarded. I can't say I've ever seen a recipe do that. I've seen lots that want the flowers in the pot and the stems discarded, and plenty that want both leaves and stems.

The recipes are diverse. My first flip through it looked to me like it was heavy on rabbit, and snail. A subsequent investigation tells me that it is much more diverse. I skimmed over at least one vegetarian recipe (I think there are actually three of them), as well as diverse dishes calling for all manner of fish and crustacean, plus rabbit, pork, snail, mushroom, squid ink, and vegetable. It is a bit heavy on snails. But I'm sure you can leave them out of some of the dishes.

Overall I'm far more happy about this purchase than I thought I would be.

This book is extremely helpful for us and we are using the Rice diet as our way to loose and maintain our weight loss. So far much better and much much healthier than any other diets I have ever done (which include many). Highly recommended for those that are interested or curious on being healthy the simple way. I am not a physician but I know the struggle I have had for years with anckle swelling and gaining too much weight. Now I have a book + to guide me. This diet really works for me. I love pasta and rice. I lost 20 pounds in one and a half months and I didn't feel deprived. I have since slipped a few times but it is very easy to get back on the right track.

Read this story to them. Then photocopy the recipe pages. Eating and preparing international rice recipes then become playacting, for this book is all about how, in a multicultural neighborhood, in one delightful evening, all of the households prepare special, spicy and indigenous dishes with this one simple staple. It is a story of our differences. It is a story of our similaries. Moreover, it is a celebration of how rice is the canvas upon which we paint our works of culinary imagination.

This book shows children that we may all be from different cultures, but in the simplest ways we are very much the same. It is a good first day of school book, or good multicultural education book!

...the book fails to address our multicultural society as a whole contingent. The story follows a young white girl while she explores the diversity of her society, but does not work towards unifying the groups she meets together.

For some of you, my criticism might seem picky (which I admittingly will agree to), but as a person of color who has grown up in very diverse neighborhoods and has been collecting children's books on multiculturalism, there is a large absence of material that tries to unify people of color -- some of whom need a lot of healing and mending.

Other than that, the animation in the book is wonderful.

I purchased this book because I was looking for satifying recipes that fit my lifestyle. What I found was better than I ever imagined! The recipes are easy to follow & delicious. My family loves them. A few of my favorites are Lemon Pepper Crackers, Skillet Pumpkin Pie, Peach Cranberry Cobbler, Linguini with Tomatoes and Herbs, Animal Crackers, and Vegetable Pizza. The Herbed Sweet Potato Bisuits are delicious as biscuits or as dumplings in a stew. This book has helped me become very creative. I stongly recommend this book for anyone who wants a healthier and tasty lifestyle. Thanks Janie-job well done.

This is probably the definitive work on how to start with whole grains and
make bread and other grain based foods. The author includes essential
details about how to store grains, how to care for cast iron utensils, how
to make sourdough and sprouts, etc. that you don't see in a lot of other
books. The writing style is concise and very clear. The recipes are
flexible allowing you to adjust and substitute ingredients. It is amazing
how quickly pan bread can be made from scratch. And now I can make a $5
loaf of artisan bread with less than $1 of ingredients, and if I were
grinding my own wheat, I could do it for less than fifty cents worth of
ingredients!
