Editorial Review:

This large format, comprehensive, high quality and visually rich art book covers the history of animation throughout the world, focusing heavily on the North American creative engines of Disney, Warner and now the new, small production CGI houses. The book is divided into world regions to reveal the clear developments in each area, but heavy cross referencing will show the increasing internationalization of animation from the 1930's when the industry and creative imagination of Walt Disney began to infect artists and producers the world over, revealed most recently in The Matrix phenomenon where the bridge between the first and subsequent films, (Animatrix, nine animated shorts), was provided by a pioneering collaboration between US and Japanese animation studios.

Beginning with the earliest in animation, we follow the few individuals who worked on their own to develop techniques that would soon transform animation into a mass-market phenomenon. In recent years, animation has been hugely impacted by the arrival of the computer, seen in films such as Toy Story and Shrek. Computers have pushed animation to the limit by achieving fine, detailed, real-world rendering techniques that challenge the next generation of animators.

The is the best Character Creation book I've found. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The book, 1Cartoon Character Creation Volume 1 & 2, has straightforward techniques approach to Learning Advanced LightWave Skills and Knowledge. I purchased Timothy Albee's Lightwave 3D, "Getting Started Guide" which came with my purchase of the program, LightWave from Newtek. The Book got me started back in 2005. (A general skills book covers a broad range of LightWave. But does not get too deep, which is good for beginners.)

I was very interested in and loved cartooning and character creation in 3D. So I purchased Jonny Gorden's "Cartoon Character Creation-Volume 2". If ya don't know and wanna learn Rigging right, get this book. Jonny be getting off with his techniques in this bad boy. Loved the book.

(Jonny's book covers A through Z in Rigging and Animation mostly plus overviews on general knowledge stuff as well. But since I already learned the basics with "Getting Started" I was able to get deep into Jonny's techniques.)

Editorial Review:

Illustrated with approximately 235 color images and packaged with a DVD of selected videos, Animated Painting brings together some of the most compelling recent contemporary art to combine traditional conceptions of painting and drawing with the techniques and time-based elements of animation. As the moving image continues to overwhelm our visual field, artists are using the playful possibilities of time and movement to extend the languages of painting and drawing to literally "animate" them without completely releasing the work of art from the visual codes and conventions of the traditional two-dimensional art object. These artists often wrap their doubts and concerns about society into an aesthetically delightful package, claiming animation techniques for contemporary art, either wholly or as part of a hybrid artistic practice. Animated Painting features 14 international artists, including Sadie Benning, Jeremy Blake, William Kentridge and Julian Opie.

Editorial Review:

Ask any masked cartoon villains and they'll give you an earful about those "meddling kids" and their silly dog. No doubt they're whining about Scooby-Doo, America's most endearing crime-fighting Great Dane. In 1969, Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma, and Daphne drove into the Saturday-morning lineup in a funky colored van, aptly dubbed "the Mystery Machine." Solving endless frightfully funny whodunits, Scooby and gang became the most successful and well-recognized troupe in the Hanna-Barbera family.

If you love the Looney Tunes, here is your book 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

It's easy to sit back and watch the re-runs of Warner Brothers cartoons and just let them wash over us, but that would ignore all of the work that went into them. We would not get an appreciation of the sheer number of cartoons produced. Luckily Beck and Friedwald were obsessed enough to pull them all together in one volume. Going on a year by year basis, from Bosko cartoons of 1930 to the last gasps of 1969 (and the reawakening in the 80's) the authors provide a landmark reference showing the premiere date, the credits given in the openings, and a thorough synopsis of the action. But of course any reference like this would be an oddity if it was just a listing. But we are provided with two ways to find information - a title index showing the entry (all purpose for grabbing when watching that cartoon), and an index based upon appearances of 15 of the most popular characters. Want to find out when did Marvin the Martian appear? It's here. (1948 - Haredeveil Hare). Wonder how many cartoons starred Daffy Duck - count 'em up. (a whole lot) Just sitting back and reading synopses shows the breadth of jokes and settings that the artists were able to take advantage of. You can also see the repetition that occured when the writers fell into a rut. Just a great book to have on the shelf to pull down when you want and a great guilty pleasure!

Editorial Review:

Everything you always wanted to know about Warner Bros. cartoons but were afraid to ask, this complete and indispensable reference will delight adults, children, and audiences all over the world.

Includes a good CD demo 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have two other iMovie2 books, but I put out the money for this one because not only does it contains quite a few other techniques not found in other books, but because the attached CD comes only with sample movie clips of camera and editing techniques discussed in the book. It also includes among other things shareware and demo software like Adobe After Effects, sound effect utilities, graphic converter, MoviEffects to use with QT movies.

I wouldn't say this is the best iMovie2 book, but the author does a good job outlining, laying out, and explaining editing procedures and techniques. It's not that iMovie2 is a difficult program to learn or use, but it's just that books like these provide insightful strategies that enable you to get more out of the program. I certaintly recommend this book for first time and intermediate users of iMovie2.

Editorial Review:

For the first time, making and editing your own movies is as easy as plugging in your camera, turning on your iMac and double-clicking the iMovie icon. What the iMac did for Internet access iMovie will do for video editing. iMovie for Dummies not only shows you the ins and outs of using iMovie, it also shows you the techniques and tricks to making professional-looking video. Storyboards, effects, titles, sound, music, manipulating tracks -- these authors cover it all in an engaging and entertaining fashion that will make learning to make movies as much fun as watching them!

Great book for Disney fans. :) 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In Disney's Art of Animation, Thomas explains the birth of the Walt Disney co., from a handful of people meeting in a home, to the huge Disney phenomenon we know today. The first half of the book explains the formative years of Disney, from before Mickey's time. This book looks into facts about the films themselves from an outside veiw. It keeps its eye on the whole company as it struggled along through the 30's, 40's, and even 50's. It talks about pre-Snow White cartoons and all of the full length feture films from Snow White to 1990's Rescures Down Under. The last half Explains the process of creating a modern animated film from the standpoint of many of the people who had an infleuance creating the only Disney Picture to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy AwardsÐBeauty and the Beast. Thomas explains how each aspect of the film is created and consolidated into one final, breathtaking work. An excellent book for anyone intrested in animation and, not to mention, a Disney fan's wish come true.

Editorial Review:

A celebration of the world's most famous animated films features color artwork, interviews with illustrators and animators, a complete history of Disney animation, and an analysis of the making of Beauty and the Beast. Reprint.

Editorial Review:

Featuring 50 seminal short films by key animators from around the world, this book discusses the work of early pioneers such as Oskar Fischinger and Jan Svankmajer as well as contemporary animators such as Larry Cuba, Tim Hope and Run Wrake. All of the films included are independently produced personal work. Most of the featured directors make a living in commercial animation but, freed from the constraints of a client brief, they use their short films to experiment with new ideas and techniques, many of which subsequently find their way into commercial applications. Labors of love, these films can take years to complete – each second of the film may consist of up to 25 frames of animation. Grouped according to four main themes, all forms of animation are covered, including 2D, 3D, Claymation, stop frame and web/Flash animation. Each project is accompanied by a 500-word review including comments from the director. Details of software and method along with the internet address of the production company are given in the technical credits.

Underdog Hero Creates Mouse Mania! 3 out of 5 stars.
21 of 24 people found this review helpful.

Mickey Mouse is one of the best recognized and well regarded symbols in the world. Children are even more willing to get inoculations if Mickeys face is on hand. Due to an aggressive merchandising bent, this Disney character has been transformed into almost every possible physical expression. The only things that I havent seen done with Mickey are to turn him into buildings. Perhaps that will be next.

This book provides a primarily pictorial presentation of that history, from the original drawing by Ub Iwerks back in the 1920s through to the latest fashion in Mickey Mouse watches today. In between, you will see Mickey during his cartoon career (including a list of his appearances) beginning with his speaking role in Steamboat Willie on November 18, 1928, through the three different versions of the Mickey Mouse Club (I was disappointed that there were no large photographs of Annette!), his role as a greeter as the Disney theme parks (youll be fascinated by how the costume evolved), to his evolution as a drawn figure (pupils within pupils made him more appealing).

The book is loosely themed around Mickeys initial appeal as a brainy, underdog hero . . . a sort of mouse David versus Goliath. There are brief references to the other Disney characters, including Minnie, Donald Duck, and Pluto.

Clearly, the pictures the thing in this book. You will see ads, balloons, comic strips, lots of watches, wordworking projects, flower and topiary representations at the theme parks, movie posters, movie stills, story boards, every conceivable kind of merchandise, photographs, conceptual art (including Andy Warhol), Mickey Mouse ears, magazine covers, and sketches.

Although the book has some exposition, it is on the light side. Serious fans of Mickey would want to know a lot more. So the ideal recipient for this book would be a young person who likes Mickey, but doesnt know very much about him.

Fans of Minnie will be very disappointed. She is almost totally ignored in the book. Since my daughter likes Minnie much better than Mickey, this would be a poor choice as a gift for her.

Those looking for the ultimate visual experience with Mickey will also find this book to be disappointing. Although it has a lot of attractive material, it could have had much, much more.

Like most compromises, the book fails to fully satisfy. I graded the book down accordingly although it is perfectly executed for its concept of providing a little background with a lot of images of Mickey.

After you finish enjoying this book, think about who you favorite cartoon character is. Why do you like that character? What traits of that character do you wish that you embodied? What other traits would make that character even more desirable?

Look for role models wherever you can find them!

Editorial Review:

Musician, magician, actor, dancer, singer, detective, plumber, firefighter, lover, and so much more. Mickey Mouse may have begun as an unlikely puckish hero, but this favorite star of movies, television, books, and comics has evolved into a worldwide cultural icon. From musical mouse-terpieces and groundbreaking films, through chameleon-like changes and comebacks, this book addresses the personality and staying power of an international hero and all-around good guy. Never-before-published artwork from The Walt Disney Archives and private collections is showcased alongside classic illustrations-more than 300 images in all.
