Through a simple analogy, you will come to understand the basics of writing for animated features while discovering the distinctions between animation and live-action scripts and examining feature animation genres. In addition, you will be given the tools to create cohesive plot structures for the animated screenplay, fascinating characters, original scenes, and dynamic dialogue. Includes the "secret" and scene-by-scene specific structure included in Gardner's Guide to Screenwriting, with some minor variations. By applying this structure creatively and effectively, your feature animation script will stand out among the thousands of scripts that circulate around studio lots.

This book exposes you to many different types of animation along with traditional animation. I had taken a class on this subject with the author of the book and learned alot about the different kinds of animation. I highly recommend that that you watch some of the animation used as examples in book to get a better understanding of the topics discussed.

This book is very satisfying. It is in good condition and I have no problems with it.

Editorial Review:

Art in Motion is the first comprehensive examination of the aesthetics of animation in its many forms. It gives an overview of the relationship between animation studies and media studies, then focuses on specific aesthetic issues concerning flat and dimensional animation, full and limited animation, and new technologies. A series of studies on abstract animation, audiences, representation, and institutional regulators is also included.

As good as the Christmas one 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

If you own the Christmas edition one then the Great Pumpkin one is in the same format. It has interesting facts, two piano score pages,and the colored story of it. It is worth your money and is good for any Peanuts fans collection.

Editorial Review:

Trick-or-treating has never been more fun—with scary costumes, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Sally, Schroeder, Linus, and, of course, the Great Pumpkin. Since its first airing forty years ago, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" has become synonymous with Halloween. This collection of remembrances and behind-the-scenes treasures celebrates the timeless television classic with:

  • A full script illustrated with screen art from the show
  • Never-before-seen photographs, storyboard excerpts, and production materials
  • Interviews with the original child actors who were the voices of the Peanuts gang
  • Reminiscences and insider tidbits from executive producer Lee Mendelson and animator Bill Melendez
  • And much more!

Grade B 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The art is good, the text is interesting, but the book design is bad in this pricey hardback. Each stage of creating this computer-animated movie is shown, from early concept drawings to discarded set ideas to showing the different wax textures chosen for the Hive scenes. Especially interesting are the dozens of different characters and bee vehicles. Adding to the fun are lots of comments from Jerry Seinfeld about the creation of "Bee Movie."

But the poor design! Several boxes of text, and many page numbers, are white on yellow, which is almost impossible to read. There's no index, and the table of contents is vague. And there are several typos. The gorgeous art deserves better.

Here's the table of contents:

* Foreword by Jerry Seinfeld
* Introduction
* The Hive (includes: Early hive and Honex development, bee vehicles, pollen-jock guns, hive furniture)
* Central Park
* Manhattan (includes: Vanessa's apartment, Vanessa's flower shop, town and country, courtroom, vehicles)
* The characters (includes: Vanessa, Ken, early bee development, Barry, Adam, Barry and Adam together, Martin Benson, pollen jocks, queen bee, Montgomery)
* Visual effects, props and graphics

Editorial Review:

From the comic mind of Jerry Seinfeld and the artistic talent of DreamWorks Animation (creators of Shrek), comes Bee Movie. In a hive built around making mon...er...honey, a young, idealistic bee named Barry just doesn't seem to fit in. On a chance opportunity to venture outside the hive, Barry's life changes forever when he meets a beautiful florist named Vanessa and discovers an appalling secret: humans have been stealing honey for themselves! The Art of Bee Movie dips into the artistic pot of this hilarious film with more than 300 bee-autiful pieces of art, including sketches, pastels, digital paintings, and clay models. Delicious quotes from the artists, production designers, producers, and Jerry Seinfeld himself will tickle the funny bone and the imagination of all animation fans.

Great book for Disney fans. :) 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In Disney's Art of Animation, Thomas explains the birth of the Walt Disney co., from a handful of people meeting in a home, to the huge Disney phenomenon we know today. The first half of the book explains the formative years of Disney, from before Mickey's time. This book looks into facts about the films themselves from an outside veiw. It keeps its eye on the whole company as it struggled along through the 30's, 40's, and even 50's. It talks about pre-Snow White cartoons and all of the full length feture films from Snow White to 1990's Rescures Down Under. The last half Explains the process of creating a modern animated film from the standpoint of many of the people who had an infleuance creating the only Disney Picture to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy AwardsÐBeauty and the Beast. Thomas explains how each aspect of the film is created and consolidated into one final, breathtaking work. An excellent book for anyone intrested in animation and, not to mention, a Disney fan's wish come true.

Editorial Review:

A celebration of the world's most famous animated films features color artwork, interviews with illustrators and animators, a complete history of Disney animation, and an analysis of the making of Beauty and the Beast. Reprint.

Great Pre-production book!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Even if you didn't like Ratatouille (I don't see why) you can appreciate this book. It is filled with amazing artwork for the film; storyboard, concept sketches, background paintings, color keys, and my favorite concept maquettes/sculptures of the characters. The character sculptures by Greg Dykstra really blew me away. Amazing stuff! Worth the price of the book alone! If you are an artist, animator you can't go wrong with purchasing this book. Artwork is beautiful if not short of brilliant. Some amazing talent at Pixar, who made an amazing film (and still going strong). Very inspiring book!! Not only has the artwork but talks about how Ratatouille came to be.

Editorial Review:

From the hit-makers at Pixar Animation Studios who brought us Buzz Lightyear, Nemo, and Mr. Incredible, now comes Remy, the furry star of Ratatouille. A lovable rat (yes, a rat!), Remy is driven by his passion for fine cuisine to become a chef against all odds and with madcap adventures along the way at the most famous restaurant in Paris. The Art of Ratatouille includes more than 200 of the artistic ingredients in this heartwarming film: storyboards, full-color pastels, digital and pencil sketches, character studies, maquettes, and more. In this exclusive movie tie-in book for adults, effusive quotes from the director, artists, animators, and production team reveal the genius at work inside the studio that changed cartoon heroes forever.

Editorial Review:

Widely acclaimed as the best animated film of all time, Tale of Tales is a poetic amalgam of Yuri Norstein's memories of his past and hopes and fears for the future: his post-war childhood, remnants of the personal tragedies of war, the little wolf character in the lullaby his mother used to sing, the neighbors in his crowded communal flat, the tango played in the park on summer evenings, and the small working-class boy's longing to emerge from the dark central corridor of the kommunalka into a luminous world of art and poetry. In Yuri Norstein and Tale of Tales: An Animator's Journey, Clare Kitson examines the passage of these motifs into the film and delves into later influences that also affected its genesis. More than merely a study of one animated film or a biography of its creator, Kitson's investigation encompasses the Soviet culture from which this landmark film emerged and sheds light on creative influences that shaped the work of this acclaimed filmmaker.
