Good if you are a really low-tech user - not enough functionality for most 3 out of 5 stars.

After leaving the PC and Windows world behind by buying an iMac G5 I needed to convert my personal website from a FrontPage format. I am not a web designer by any stretch, but I do know my way around html codes and desire some creative license on how my site looks. Contribute was recommended to me for it's ease of use - the only other option for Macs is Dreamweaver, which was entirely too technical for my needs.

I used it for about one month and decided it really geared more for a static corporate page where you may want to periodically update text. It has a nice 'user' restriction function, so your employees can log on and make changes, then those changes can be reviewed and uploaded (a safety net for those admins who do not want their employees monkeying around with the live website) - but as a photographer I found it really lacking in ease of use for photo uploads, major text or style changes, and the theme selection was limited and BOOORRRING. Definitely not a replacement for FrontPage and I wished I would have figured all of this out before I purchased so hopefully this revew will be helpful to you.

The rise and fall of "The Sentinels" 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Seldom does a book tell a story about failure rather than success, and it's even more rare when the book's writer was major player who was involved in the failure. It's something I've almost never seen in my study of documentary literature.

Set between the original series' first and second acts, and featuring the first act's main characters, ROBOTECH II: THE SENTINELS was an ambitious attempt to further expand the mythos of the Robotech anime series. Art 3, penned by series producer/writer Carl Macek, is a chronicle of what went into the production of this series, as well as the economics, creative differences, and politics that led to its downfall. There's also the story of the salvaging The Sentinels... where the four episodes that were completed were re-worked into a feature-length video release.

Included are the synopses of the completed episodes, as well as the general story of The Sentinels as it would have unfolded. Although not quite as extensively illustrated as its two predecessors, Art 3 does contain `Bios' and renderings of the characters, as well as general descriptions of the vehicles and equipment seen in the series.

The Sentinels, however, was not the only aborted attempt to add to the Robotech saga. ART 3 also recounts the making of Robotech: The Untold Story, a feature film that never saw wide theatrical or video release. A synopsis of the film is included.

Although I highly recommend this book to the many Robotech completists out there, I'd better give you fair warning: Art 3 has long since gone out of print, and is next to impossible to find. If you ever do come across one at a reasonable price and in decent condition, consider yourself very fortunate...

The information in this book regarding the death of Freddie Moore is incorrect, unless the author has new information which he has neglected to cite.

Editorial Review:

Here is the long overdue first biographical reference and first book of its kind to chronicle the amazing careers of nearly 300 of animation's most honored and recognized animator-directors and animator-producers from around the world. Publication coincides with the 100th anniversary celebration of the very first American animated cartoon, Humorous Phases of Funny Faces, released on April 16, 1906. From Max Fleischer (Betty Boop, Popeye) to Brad Bird (The Simpsons, The Incredibles), Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat) to Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away), they are all here. With more than 70 never-before published photos and illustrations, including a full-color section of animation art, culled from private collections and many animators' personal collections, this book is an invaluable guide to the people who have shaped cinematic and television animation for decades to come.

Concept to Creation -- My kind of book 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I'm a Flash novice and searched the Internet looking for a good introductory book. I found Flash 5 Design from concept to creation, and it sounded like the kind of book I needed, so I checked it out at local bookstore. Its organization, layout, use of examples, and appropriate level of detail immediately impressed me. Computer books are all too expensive, but that is the price of admission if you want good information, so I reached for the plastic and I'm glad I made the investment. I really got into it over a long weekend, and I was thrilled! I found a chapter that had an application that seemed like it would be fund to build and I jumped right in. The directions were easy to follow, and not only was I able to duplicate the application, but understood the technical concepts in the end. For someone whose background is in graphic arts this is quite an accomplishment!

Editorial Review:

This is not your typical Flash tutorial! It wil not only teach you about Flash and how to use it, but it will also provide numerous real-world examples of robust Flash technology that a Flash developer can put to instant use! Written by a team of Flash experts, this book offers an introductory section with chapters that build on each other to provide a foundation for understanding Flash. The rest of the book demonstrates the creation of more than 20 sample animations.

Enthusiastically recommended for international animation cinema buffs. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Estonian Animation: Between Genius & Utter Illiteracy is a one-of-a-kind, extensively researched examination of Estonia's acclaimed animation scene from the first 1930's experiments to the creation of puppet and cel animation studios during the Soviet era to Estonian animation's amazing international success during the post-Soviet era. Estonian Animation is especially noteworthy for its inclusion of the recent discovery of films by four 1960's animation pioneers previously unknown to both Estonian and international animation historians. Black-and-white as well as full color photographs and screenshots illustrate this conversational, smoothly narrated history, accessible to animation fans of all backgrounds. Enthusiastically recommended for international animation cinema buffs.

Editorial Review:

Ever wonder why Estonian animation features so many carrots or why cows often perform pyramids? Well, neither question is answered in Chris Robinson’s new book, Estonian Animation. Robinson’s frank, humorous, and thoroughly researched book traces the history of Estonia’s acclaimed animation scene from early experiments in the 1930s to the creation of puppet (Nukufilm) and cel (Joonisfilm) animation studios during the Soviet era, as well as Estonia’s surprising international success during the post-Soviet era. In addition, Robinson writes about the discovery of films by four 1960s animation pioneers who, until the release of this book, had been unknown to most Estonian and international animation historians.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive reference to TV cartoon shows covers some 75 years. In the decade or so since the first edition, the industry has grown and expanded to previously unimagined heights, thanks in great part to the upsurge of cable TV services catering to animation fans. In the ten-year period from 1993 through 2003, nearly 450 new cartoon series have premiered in the U.S. Alphabetically arranged by title, the book discusses each cartoon show in detail, providing full production credits and offering commentary on such elements as development, characters, style, and the show’s significance in the overall scheme of television animation. The encyclopedia is published as a set of two volumes. Volume 1 includes the preface, introduction, and entries from “A” through “L.” Volume 2 includes entries from “M” through “Z,” the bibliography, and index. Replacement volumes can be obtained individually under ISBN 0-7864-2255-6 (for Volume 1) and ISBN 0-7864-2256-4 (for Volume 2).

Editorial Review:

This book traces the evolution of racial caricatures in American cartoons during the first half of the twentieth century. From the introduction of animated film in the early 1900s to the 1950s, ethnic humor was a staple of American-made cartoons. Yet as Christopher Lehman shows in this revealing study, the depiction of African Americans in particular became so inextricably linked to the cartoon medium as to influence its evolution through those five decades. He argues that what is in many ways most distinctive about American animation reflects white animators' visual interpretations of African American cultural expression. The first American animators drew on popular black representations, many of which were caricatures rooted in the culture of southern slavery. During the 1920s, the advent of the sound-synchronized cartoon inspired animators to blend antebellum-era black stereotypes with the modern black cultural expressions of jazz musicians and Hollywood actors. When the film industry set out to desexualize movies through the imposition of the Hays Code in the early 1930s, it regulated the portrayal of African Americans largely by segregating black characters from others, especially white females. At the same time, animators found new ways to exploit the popularity of African American culture by creating animal characters like Bugs Bunny who exhibited characteristics associated with African Americans without being identifiably black. By the 1950s, protests from civil rights activists and the growing popularity of white cartoon characters led animators away from much of the black representation on which they had built the medium. Even so, animated films today continue to portray African American characters and culture, and not necessarily in a favorable light. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including interviews with former animators, archived scripts for cartoons, and the films themselves, Lehman illustrates the intimate and unmistakable connection between African Americans and animation.
