Editorial Review:

Artist-writer-director-producer Hayao Miyazaki is often called "the Walt Disney of Japan." His animated theatrical features have been smash hits in Japan, and many, including My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service, are already familiar to American audiences. Now, with Disney-Miramax's imminent release of Princess Mononoke,, Miyazaki's masterwork and one of the top-grossing film in all Japanese history, this "animation master" is about to take America and the world by storm.

Mixing first-hand interview and personal insights with critical evaluations of art, plot, production qualities, and literary themes, McCarthy provides a film-by-film appraisal that examines technique as well as message. She reveals Miyazaki to be not just a master of the art of animation, but a meticulous craftsman who sees his work as a medium for shaping the humanistic and environmental concerns of our times.

An overview of the artist and his early career is followed by in-depth examinations of seven major Miyazaki films: Nausica of the Valley of Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Castle of Cagliostro, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke. Included are design and technical data, story synopses and character sketches, personnel and filmography data, and critical evaluation. Illustrations throughout, in color and black and white, show the detail and vigor of Miyazaki's art.

Written for anime fans as well as students of film, literature, and popular culture, McCarthy's book raises animation criticism to a whole new level and is an essential guide to the work of a world-class filmmaker.

London-based Helen McCarthy is author of Anime! A Beginner's Guide to Japanese Animation, The Anime Movie Guide, and (with Jonathan Clements) The Erotic Anime Movie Guide. She appears frequently on radio and TV and at conferences around the world.

I liked what I saw 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I don't feel qualified reviewing my purchase as it was a gift for a dear friend who has been a Harryhausen fan since he was twelve. By his reaction upon receiving the book I felt I must have given him the greatist gift in the world. It was before I wrapped the book that I had a chance to skim through it and I found it to be very impressive in its wealth of photos, illustrations and information. I was very glad to see it was printed on quality paper and the illustrations were large and clear. I have seen other books of this type and get very annoyed when they print a picture of a film no larger then 2"x 2 1/2". I would say this book is a great tribute to Mr. Harryhausen's career.

Editorial Review:

Now available in paperback, The Art of Ray Harryhausen focuses on the lifetime of work that Harryhausen has preserved, much of which is published here for he first time. His collection includes preliminary sketches, elaborate drawings of key scenes, carefully plotted storyboards, and the models that were used in films. Harryhausen begins by exploring his early work and influences, then takes readers through projects divided by theme – fairy tales, dinosaurs and aliens, for example. This body of work lets readers discover how the artist develops an idea from his imagination to the breathtaking character that appears on the screen.

Editorial Review:

Here, for the first time, is a showcase presentation of the best of the art from the legendary Hanna-Barbera studio.

The Hanna-Barbera Treasury celebrates the legacy of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera through more than five decades of rare drawings, storyboards, concept art, and memorabilia from studio archives and private collections. It includes more than 24 removable artifacts and facsimile reproductions, as well as photographs, sketches, comic book covers, brochures, and posters. Vintage art, rare merchandising images, retro product packages, and archival newspaper and magazine ads transport the reader back in time to an era when a brave new medium invaded our living rooms to create a new art form: the prime-time family cartoon.

In a world flooded by rapidly changing images, few are able to maintain the appeal that has defined the characters of Hanna-Barbera for more than 50 years. Since first joining forces as a pair of young animators, Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera won the hearts of more than three generations. The duo won seven Academy awards at MGM during the golden age of the Hollywood cartoon, and still, decades later, their best-loved characters, having made their debut in television's early days, are household names.

Today, it is not uncommon for three generations to share the joy of Hanna-Barbera's creations, including such classics as Huckleberry Hound, Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo, Yogi Bear, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Jonny Quest, Magilla Gorilla, Top Cat, and Space Ghost. Written by animation historian Jerry Beck, The Hanna-Barbera Treasury will be eagerly sought by those who grew up with these characters as well as a new generation of cartoon fans.

Futurama Conquers the Universe 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This graphic novel contains issues 10 through 13 of the Futurama comic books:
--The Big Sweep, in which our heroes participate in the dangerous Winter Olympic sport of swurling,
--The Cure for the Common Clod, in which Fry gets a cold that threatens New New York,
--Hostile Makeover, in which Amy takes Leela shopping, and
--The Bender You Say, in which Bender takes on the job of the Robot Devil.

For some reason, the cover shown here on Amazon (featuring Morbo in a tank, shooting at our heroes), is not the one on the copy I have and those I've seen in stores. Mine shows Fry, Leela and Bender standing on a very tiny ringed planet, while Leela makes earrings out of another planet's rings, Bender lights a cigar with a sun, and Fry takes a bite out of a terrestrial planet.

Not very funny 2 out of 5 stars.

I love Futurama. I have every episode and DVD. This was a very quick read and it wasn't up to the standards of the TV series. Some parts were funny while others were just odd. I wouldn't spend the money on it. It took very little time to read and it is not something that I'll read over and over again to make it worth purchasing.

8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Yes millions of anime fans hate his Manga Mania because he can't do the art right and they hate his books because he hires people to do the art for him but........THIS IS THE WORST YET! Last year one of my friends showed me this book. I felt like laughing Chistopher Hart really doesn't know what anime is! He hired the worst people yet! There is like only two or three good artist (one was the one the one that did the front)and the rest of them were terrible. Most of the book is terrible mabye like ten pages are good but the rest how sad! Even if this books cover looks good don't judge a book by its cover.

Editorial Review:

A guide to drawing Japanese animation. Step-by-step, Christopher Hart demonstrates how to draw anime characters from a wide selection of styles: high-tech cyber punks who live in the world of the future; teen characters with troubled relationships at school, home and on the street; and mighty monsters, fantasy warriors and giant robots. Aspiring animators will find chapters on anime's special effects; the role of storyboarding in anime; sketching and the art of character design; and a mini-course in perspective. Examples and exercises are included. The book concludes with interviews with Scott Frazier, an American anime director working in Japan, and Mahiro Meada, a Japanese animation director.

Very nice book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The Art of Ratatouille didn't disappoint me, because it really reveals the artistic thoughts which determined the visual concept of the movie. The reader gets an insight into the artists conceptions and the accurate research that was needed to achieve a very rich and believable look. After reading the book I respected the movie even more, it was good to see how careful they planned everything to have something really valuable.
This is a very nice edition with beautiful illustrations in it.

Readers have different kind of expectations, that's why it's earful to mention, that this book shows most of all the ART of Ratatouille, so it is recommended for those who would like to know more about that.

Editorial Review:

From the hit-makers at Pixar Animation Studios who brought us Buzz Lightyear, Nemo, and Mr. Incredible, now comes Remy, the furry star of Ratatouille. A lovable rat (yes, a rat!), Remy is driven by his passion for fine cuisine to become a chef against all odds and with madcap adventures along the way at the most famous restaurant in Paris. The Art of Ratatouille includes more than 200 of the artistic ingredients in this heartwarming film: storyboards, full-color pastels, digital and pencil sketches, character studies, maquettes, and more. In this exclusive movie tie-in book for adults, effusive quotes from the director, artists, animators, and production team reveal the genius at work inside the studio that changed cartoon heroes forever.
