An excellent starting place 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm too old to have discovered Japanese manga and anime in my youth, but I've made up for that the past few years. Being interested in Japanese culture and literature generally, I had some understanding of why anime is the way it is, and why it's so much different from American or European graphic art, but reading this well-written book, I found there was a great deal I had missed. Poitras writes from the fan's point of view, so he knows what questions he should be addressing -- everything from the "big eye" mania, to the difference between hentai and mainstream manga, to the nervousness among the U.S. morals police about "foreign" art, to actually setting up and publicizing a fan group, plus the ins and outs of model kits, imported publications, and so on. There's also an excellent rundown of recommended anime titles and series, which I've photocopied as a checklist. This book doesn't tell you everything you need to know, but it's a good place to start.

Editorial Review:

What makes Japanese animation Japanese? What are the top, not-to-be-missed films? Who's got the anime goods? What's it all mean anyway? Answering just about every question a fan (or curious parent) has, Anime Essentials is an easy-to-read and fun-to-look-at overview of the pop culture phenomenon sweeping America. It discusses the major players, where to get your anime fix, otaku (devoted fan) etiquette, how to run an anime club (and get pre-release screenings!), how to "talk" anime to outsiders, and lots more of interest both to veterans and newcomers.

One of theNew York Public Libary's 2001 Books for the the Teen Age List.

"Overall, this book opens its welcoming arms wide to newcomers, so that more people can enjoy anime's story qualities, human element and cinematic, artistic effects. A valuable book!" -- Protocultue Addicts

"For the anime beginner, this is a great place to start." -- Dreamwatch

This book was an exceptional collection of old and new. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book was well done and very appealing to the eye and informational to read. It gives the reader some good history of Warner Bros. cartoons and the rarely credited artists. Through-out the book there are pointers on how to draw various characters, but unfortunatly they are not as complete as one might have it. However, the overall is terrific.

It should be the Warner Brother Ltd. Ed. collectors' bible. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It provides the information about different types of animation art such as production cel, sericel, limited edition. The reader can use this book to check the original prices and edition size of many WB limited edition cels.

Every animator and animation fan must own! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you like to own some really cool prints of Bugs Bunny, Tweety, or just the old folks from the Warner Bros. Studio, this is the book! It goes through the history of the animation studio and its founders. Chuck Jones is similar to Walt Disney, he had his own crew of animation masters to create a whole new perspective of cartoon.
One disappointing about this book is that its published date is 1997. Sadly "The Iron Giant" (released 1999) and "Cats Don't Dance" (1997) did not make it to the book; two of the most successful WB animated feature film. However, it is still a book to own and look for inspiration.

Editorial Review:

Published to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the Warner Bros. Studios, this album features authentic animation art of everyone's favorite characters. More than 300 color illustrations trace the evolution of the uniquely American art form through the development and growth of the Warner Bros.

Stdent work after all... 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book sis exactly what it aspires to be, a collection of class exercises by talented students at the Art Center in Pasadena. The artwork and layout are competent and anybody looking for a benchmark or an achievable target for their own artwork and technique could benefit form this "syllabus". But it does lack a measure of originality as one work looks pretty much like the next and the themes that give origin to the pieces are somewhat pretentious. It is a reflection of a school were undoubtedly students feed of each other's creativity and try to meet a look which is standard in the industry. The results are professional but cookie-cutter in the best of cases. Some works are a little undeveloped but may give a glimpse into the diversity of talents in a single group of students. I would use this book as a first approach or a teaching tool but not as something I want to get attached to.

Editorial Review:

In The Future... showcases the first student work created in the new Entertainment Design program at the prestigious Art Center College of Design. Entertainment design requires strong industrial design, architectural and illustration skills, as the designers create characters, environments, vehicles and props. Examples of class work from such courses as Originality in Design, Character Design, Architectural Design, Visual Development and Color Theory are presented. This stunning collection of sketches, renderings, and models created by the inaugural class of entertainment design students is a "must-have" for any fan of entertainment design and for those who have enjoyed the first Art Center student book, The Skillful Huntsman.

There's more to animation than you think... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I must admit that I have always regarded animation as a lesser form of filmmaking, so the analysis in Animation Unleashed caught me by surprise. Who knew that Disney animated features, Warner Bros shorts, NFB animated shorts, etc were so full of innovative filmmaking techniques?

Part of what's interesting here is how deceptively simple many of the key points seem: for example, the idea that you can use caricature not only in the character design but in the acting, the scenery, the soundtrack and even the editing seems obvious once it has been pointed out but is not necessarily an easy idea to arrive at in the first place.

It's also worth noting that a lot of what is presented here is equally applicable to live action filmmaking, particularly hybrid filmmaking, like the importance of creating a history for imaginary characters which encompasses not just personal background but the evolution of the character's entire species in order to invest such creatures with logical characteristics.

In total, a real eye opener which has already changed the way I view and make film.

Editorial Review:

Make your animation say what you want it to say. Animation's potential as a powerful tool for communication is just beginning to be understood. This book reveals key principles, useful for both professionals and beginners, which will help you harness the full power of this exciting and ever expanding medium.

Wonderful graphics, including ones the public never sees 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is one of the most exquisite things to come out of The Lion King. The graphics are beautiful. Most of the pictures are ones that are used for the storyboard and layout scenes. I reccommend it to anyone who loves The Lion King, or just Disney in general. Order with confidence - the book is worth much more than its price tag. It is also much more convient than the larger, more expensive version which I believe is no longer being produced.

Best of the "The Art Of" series! 5 out of 5 stars.

I received this book as a birthday present last month. To say the least, I was overwhelmed with all the artwork in this book. I love it! The artwork and production animation is breathtaking! It's a really awesome book, I'd get it if I were you! You can't go wrong with "The Art of The Lion King"!!!

Editorial Review:

Evangelion Artistry. 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A beautifully presented collection of artwork,in hardback format, that will appeal to the lover of Anime based art as well as the hardcore Evangelion fan. Read from right to left in the Japanese style, images are displayed by Character from Shinji through to support characters like Maya Ibuki and Hikari Horaki. The book also incorporates draft artwork of all the major Evangelion characters in their original concept format. Other works are shown towards the rear of the book that are not Evangelion based but are an excellent showcase for the talent of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. Some of these artworks will be instantly recognisable to Anime fans in general. If the art of Evangelion is for you, Der Mond will not disappoint.

Editorial Review:

New look, a hard cover version for Der Mond!

Stylish, delicate, and consistently edgy, Der Mond collects the color illustrations of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, perhaps the most acclaimed manga and anime artist of all time. The book includes 74 pages of paintings and designs devoted to Neon Genesis Evangelion, plus another 50 pages from The Wings of Honneamise, Nadia--The Secret of Blue Water, Blue Uru, and other works--including Sadamoto's cover to Eric Clapton's 1998 album, Pilgrim.

The Best Biography of Walt Disney Hands Down 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Easily the best biography out there on Walt Disney hands down. It will never be topped. It neither kisses his hiney as Bob Thomas' studio sanctioned biography does, nor does it discount him as merely a low brow populist (as Richard Schickel did), nor lies about him as some sort of communist spy in order to sell books. Not only is this biography even handed, but Mr. Watts makes brilliant connections between Walt and his time that no other biographer had the insight to do. This is a fair, balanced, well organized, incredibly entertaining biography that really brings the real Walt Disney to life. Steven Watts is a genius biographer.

Editorial Review:

Part biography and part cultural analysis, Steven Watts's The Magic Kingdom sheds new light on the cultural icon of "Uncle Walt." Watts also digs deeply into Disney's private life, investigating his roles as husband, father, and brother and providing fresh insight into his peculiar psyche - his genuine folksiness and warmth, his domineering treatment of colleagues and friends, his deepest prejudices and passions. Full of colorful sketches of daily life at the Disney Studio and tales about the creation of Disneyland and Disney World, The Magic Kingdom offers a definitive view of one of the most influential Americans of the twentieth century.

Editorial Review:

The Animation Bible is the first book any aspiring animator will want to own—and with increasingly affordable tools for digital animation and the vast forum of the Internet for free distribution, animation is becoming more popular than ever.

Animation authority Maureen Furniss covers every aspect of production, from finding a concept, choosing a medium, and creating characters all the way to getting the end result screened and distributed. In addition to traditional cel animation, Furniss also examines direct filmmaking, stop-motion animation, and Flash, as well as early motion devices and toys that produce animated images, all with case studies illustrating the successes and difficulties experienced by professional animators. Furniss goes beyond the image on the screen, discussing visual storytelling, sound design, and how to schedule, budget, and pitch an animated film.

The Animation Bible is the essential guide for a new generation of animators.
