Loeb and Sale do it again 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Loeb is one of our greatest comic book writers, especially when it comes to Batman. He'skinda making our hero into something new, much more believable. Loeb and Sale's classic story (where their reputation rests) is the early Batman stories, like The Long Halloween, which features Catwoman quite prominently, though she does disappear. This is the story of her time gone from TLH, in Rome. We learn a lot about Selina Kyle. It seems Loeb's influence is heavily on her as well as many of the other Batman characters.

Saving the best for last 5 out of 5 stars.

When we last saw Catwoman at the end of Dark Victory, we had learned of the possibility that Carmine Falcone was her father. In this followup, the last of Jeph Loeb's very successful trilogy that started with The Long Halloween, we find Selina in Rome searching for the answers to this mystery. Accompanying her on this roller coaster journey is one Mr. Edward Nigma, aka The Riddler, who ably and humorously provides the fodder for Selina's many acid tongued barbs, and as we eventually find out later in the story, much, much more. From the intriguing plotline to the witty one-liners and Selina's insightful and engaging internal monologue, this tale fires on all cylinders. Loeb's love for Catwoman is obvious, with his extensive use of her in all of his Battales, and who can blame him. Her star power shines brightly throughout them all by the sheer force of her multifaceted and magnetic personality. Loeb delivers, for a delightful change, a fairly wordy script that isn't the rapid read that his two previous installments of this ongoing saga, especially TLH, were and in the process delivers his most exceptional work yet. Most sequels usually end up as pale and disappointing imitations of the original, but he has bucked that trend with this series that exhibited improvements with each installment, culminating here with his grand finale. His place in the Batman pantheon of writers was cemented with these books, and while he may be currently writing for Marvel, here is one fan who would like to see him weave his magic one more time with the Bat and the Cat.

Editorial Review:

The acclaimed, Eisner award-winning team of writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale return to Gotham City, home of Catwoman, for a tale that takes the Feline Fatale into a dangerous new realm.

WHEN IN ROME chronicles Catwoman's mysterious trip to Italy and her dealings with the deadly Falcone crime family. It's a colorful tale of Gotham's sexiest cat burglar at her most intriguing.

The Dark Knight in his original style! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

First off, I must say I purchased this book when my friend Anthony Tollin mentioned that the first ever Batman story was a retooled story from "The Shadow." So, I had to see how much the original Batman mirrored the Shadow. Well, after reading "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" (Batman) and then reading "The Partners of Peril" (The Shadow), I have to agree with him. Bill Finger (the original writer for Batman, Kane was the artist) used the Shadow's story as the script for his first Batman adventure. Check out the new reprint of The Shadow #9 for more details on The Shadow's original story.Lingo And Partners of Peril: Two Classic Adventures Of The Shadow

Ever since, I have been able to spot the Shadow story elements and influences in many other stories. Instead of taking away from Batman, it adds to the fun by allowing me to enjoy one of the first superheroes as well as imaghine how the story would have been if the hero were the Shadow instead. Sort of a "Two-for-one" special. Almost every story in this first archive could have been Grade-A pulp novel and been just as great as it was a comic.

Overall, a great chance to see the first year of Batman stories in the correct chronalogical order and see his evolution from a gun-toting fighter into the superb detective.

Bats Aplenty 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

WAR GAMES -- a year-plus serialized event in the history of Batman -- was a terrifically compelling yarn. Everything that could've gone wrong WENT wrong: alliances were forged and fell apart, enemies were made that shouldn't have been made, and people died. That's rare in the comic book universe, but it's one of the traits that strongly separates the Batman and his stories from most other DC "superhero" tales ... Batman is human, and, as a result, he's bound to make mistakes, just like any other character within the Bat-universe.

WAR CRIMES -- at the most basic level -- is about just that: mistakes. Gotham City is well on the road to recover now that the games have ended, and yet the Batman finds himself looking back in order to try to continue piecing together much of what still doesn't quite add up. In doing so, he uncovers a startling secret that sheds light on the disappearance of one of his oldest confidantes, and this discovery shakes him to his foundation.

Compared against the entirety of the WAR arcs, CRIMES fits nicely but perhaps the shock that such discovery should've sent through the Batman wasn't significant enough for my tastes. While I've always appreciated any tale of the Bats largely because of the human factor, there's still a larger-than-life presence to some of his villains (such as the Black Mask) that borders on immortality. CRIMES has a terrific, almost cinematic feel to most of it, and some of that payoff is sacrificed in the conclusion involving the Joker and the Black Mask taking on one another and then involving Batman because the Black Mask has been impersonating the Dark Knight. In cases such as this, I'd rather Batman pull up his sleeves a bit more and rough'n'tumble these two blokes instead of arbitrarily turning them over to the police: sometimes, that solution just grows a bit too safe for my tastes, and it feels out of touch here especially given all that's happened in the past year with these two villains.

Still, it's a solid reliable effort all around.

The Spoiler died during a the gang waror so Batman thought. When the media begin reporting on the Spoilers private life and making accusations aimed at the Dark Knight, he begins an investigation that leads to a new confrontation with Gotham Citys undisputed underworld boss, Black Mask.Complicating matters even further is the return of his deadliest opponent, the Joker, and the reappearance of an old foe long believed dead.

A bit of misrepresentation 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Volumes two and three of Bruce Wayne Fugitive can both be slightly accused of misrepresentation. The first half of #2 basically has nothing to do with the main ongoing story and is more a continuation of Greg Rucka's previous Evolution storyline. Then the Bruce Wayne saga essentially ends with this volume, and yet there is one more, with its' contents being more accurately described as an epilogue than an intrinsic part of the story, combined with a few more unrelated single issues. While bits and pieces of both are important, this practice of deception is certainly disappointing and somewhat dishonorable. The last two volumes could have and should have been edited and subsequently collected into one larger book. I may not have picked up the last one if I had known more about its' exact contents. Shame on you, DC.

Actually, the best story is about catwoan 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I'm a big batman fan, but I'm not really a fan of the other characters. I don't read the catwoman or nightwing or huntress spinoffs. I'm a fan of the detective. But in this graphic novel (which is a compilation of several short, stand alone works), catwoman's story is actually the best part. It's not even really a catwoman story, it's a heist story. But its exciting and violent and cool. And there's no batman. So oh well, maybe there's something to all these side characters. I'm still not going to read the catwoman comics, but I guess I'm glad I got tricked into reading this one...

Editorial Review:

Darwyn Cooke, the award-winning, acclaimed writer and artist of DC: THE NEW FRONTIER, has won praise for his insightful, emotionally resonant storytelling.

Now, DC presents Cooke's early tales of the Dark Knight in one graphic novel, including the epic tale "Ego," in which Batman must face his own inner demons and, in its entirety, the original graphic novel CATWOMAN: SELINA'S BIG SCORE.

Two-face at his best. Sort of. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Face the Face centers mostly around a two-face plot, and really gives insight into how the character thinks. If you don't know anything about Harvey Dent, it doesn't matter, because the basics of his character are covered without being redundant for readers already familiar with him. The plot is also written out well enough that, while this plotline is clearly a continuation or result of some other events, not knowing what happened prior isn't important because everything makes sense within the context of the book. I really enjoyed this book, and would definitely recommend it to any Batman fan of any capacity.

One year later... 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

One year later after the cataclysmic events of Infinite Crisis, Batman makes his return to Gotham City with somewhat of a new outlook and attitude in regards to his crime fighting methods. No longer do we see a super-paranoid, almost fascist-esque vigilante patroling the streets of Gotham, as the year off has done both he and his partner Tim "Robin" Drake much good. While away, Batman left a reformed Harvey Dent to defend the city, which he has done quite well, until a series of lower-tier villains are murdered, with all the signs pointing to a return of Two-Face. But is it really Harvey behind it all? What makes Face to Face so good is that while it is a bit predictable, veteran writer James G. Robinson provides enough of an entertaining story to make up for the flaws. Not to mention that the closing moments between Batman and Robin aren't only generally surprising, but even more surprisingly touching to boot. There's solid art all around, and all tin all, Face to Face is a pretty good Batman story that helps re-establish the Dark Knight in a post-Infinte Crisis universe, and paves the way for the great Grant Morrison's run on the title.
