For millions of people every year, a cruise isn't just a delightful vacation it's an obsession. These Cruise Crazies have simply GOT TO BE ON ONE - landlubber jobs and responsibilities be damned. Luckily for them, there is a new behavioral therapy guide by Dr. Kruz Nutty (a.k.a. Bob Mick), the world's premier authority on cruise addiction. Through Dr. Nutty's Cruise Crazy, take a quiz to discover which of the four levels of cruise addiction you have reached. Then take note of the wacky pre- and post-cruise rituals and obsessive-compulsive symptoms that give cruise addicts away while learning new terms that finally define their crazy addictive behaviors: Stage 1: Pre-Cruise Psychosis - a happy obsession over choosing the perfect cruise; hosting cruise-themed parties, and sending endless newsletters to friends about their future cruise. Stage 2: Traumatic Travel Syndrome, where NOTHING will keep Cruise Crazies from getting to the ship on time. Driving at break-neck speed to their port of departure, booking only hotels with harbor views to watch for their ship, and suffering from Seaport Personality Syndrome get out of the way as these Crazies rush onto the ship. Stage 3: Sea Junky. Here they either subside into lethargic poolside lounging, hibiscus in hair, sipping umbrella-laden ice-cold drinks, and floating peacefully on turquoise waters, or they rev up into a frenzy of shipboard and seaport activities by overindulging, overshopping, overeating, and overdipping into every port of call with utter abandon. Stage 4: Severe Ship Separation Anxiety as cruise crazies approach the dreaded end of the cruise, when days of uncontrolled exuberance come to an end. But Dr. Nutty does not abandon his dry-land afflicted Crazies here. Discover his 25-step Cruise Recovery Program with its bathtub buffets, faux cruise ship rooms, and other cruise withdrawal remedies. Laughter is always the best medicine and Cruise Crazy may be all the laugh therapy - or encouragement - you need.

You'll do better with internet searches than this book 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I was incredibly disappointed in this book. I haven't taken a cruise in over a decade and still didn't learn a thing reading this book. It reads like a travelogue for various islands in the Caribbean but offers no insights on any of the ships or any of the lines. It didn't have much on shore excursions either. I learned more from the various cruise lines home pages than I did from this book.

Cruise Book with lots of practical information 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent guide book for both the first time cruiser and the seasoned traveller. My travel agent gave this book as a gift to those of us cruising as a group to the Eastern Caribbean this past spring. Athough I have sailed on many cruise ships and feel I know many of the differences between the lines and ships, those in our group who were new to cruising found the glossary section very useful and filled with practical tips to make their cruise more enjoyable and less confusing (ie) tipping policy, dining options, onboard activities.

We liked the pull out map and had this hanging in our staterooms so that we could plot our course each day. The smaller maps of the ports of call were very useful, and often had more detail than the maps from the shore excursion desk onboard. So often on a cruise I feel the tour department is promoting their shops and excursions ... but having this book provided an unbiased synopsis of what there was to see in each port and where to go.

The section on Caribbean history and the history of each island helps in understanding the people and the culture. When one 'drops into a port' for just a few hours or a day, it is not always easy to get the entire flavour of the people. By knowing a bit of the history, my onshore experience was
certainly enhanced.

Editorial Review:

The world's most popular cruise destination comes alive in this beautiful guide to Caribbean cruising. Completely revised, this new edition contains current information on best beaches, dive sites and golf courses as well as port and island attractions. Hundreds of photos and maps, all in color. Includes giant pull-out color map.

Looking for a travel guide that dares to be honest?

Unlike the cruise booklet that most Tour Operators send out with your booking, our Cruise Guide book tells you how it really is!

Given from an experienced perspective that does not shy away from confronting the issues, it provides a valuable insight into what you can expect from a Nile Cruise by letting you know the scams, as well as the pleasures awaiting you on your Egyptian vacation.

Our Travel Egypt books offer straight answers, with sound and practical holiday advice. This book is illustrated throughout with over 50 black and white photographs and contains, amongst other things:

PRACTICAL ADVICE: Such as how to deal with hassle, unwanted attention, intimidation and illness. Plus, extra costs involved that you are rarely told about, local scams, bartering tips, things to avoid, etc.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Such as, medical advice, visa requirements, facts and figures, prices, boat facilities and layout, money matters, cruise schedules, safety issues, etc. SUGGESTIONS: Such as, suitable clothing, useful Arabic phrases, local customs, local dishes and drinks etc. RECOMMENDATIONS: Such as ancient sites, reviews, entertainment, extra excursions, useful links, free downloads etc.

This book is a unique guide to the 'events' of a Nile Cruise and whilst we do discuss the ancient sites in some detail it is only our book that deals with the topics we cover - namely 'telling you how it is'.

This guide has been specifically written to help people avoid the scams and hassle that could ruin their holiday.

The book tells you how it is, without over romanticising the experience, and contains information you would be hard pressed to find in one place.

A must read for anyone planning, or thinking of taking an Egyptian Nile Cruise.

The modern cruising catamaran has arrived

The arguments are over and the verdict is in--cruising catamarans comprise a rapidly growing percentage of the cruising fleet worldwide. Their advantages of space, stability, speed, and handling under power are truly compelling, and modern cats are every bit as reliable as monohulls. This long overdue, in-depth guide will help you choose and cruise the right catamaran for your needs.

“An authoritative guide for novices and experienced sailors; the best book written on the subjects since the early 1990s.”--“Trimaran” Jim Brown, renowned multihull designer

“In Catamarans, Gregor Tarjan shares his enthusiasm for yachts with two hulls, based on years of sailing all types. An excellent introduction.”--Dick Newick, legendary catamaran and trimaran designer

“If you are contemplating spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a cruising catamaran, the small price of this book is probably the best investment you could possibly start with.”--from the Foreword by Charles K. Chiodi, publisher of Multihulls Magazine

The very best guide for the gunkholer 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have two copies of the 2001 edition: one aboard my sailboat in Annapolis and the second in my office. Most of my use of the book has been in the middle Chesapeake. In crawling up and down the Magothy, Severn, South, West, Rhode, Chester, Wye, and Tred Avon Rivers this book has provided helpful insight into what I would find. This book and the Maptech chart book are all you need to find your way to and through the backwaters of the Chesapeake.

Cruisers 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

We have a power boat but found this book to be very informative & helpful. We are planning our trip, have not been to the Chesapeake in about 25 years, and have found this book the best yet in our preparations. We like to anchor out and this book is informative not specifically focusing jumping from marina to marina like many guides do.

Editorial Review:

Acclaimed as the ultimate guide to uncrowded anchorages, Cruising the Chesapeake is the reference of choice among sailors and powerboaters seeking to avoid the beaten path. This new Third Edition has been expanded to include coverage of the Atlantic coasts of New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, including Delaware Bay. Readers get:

- A cruise planner for short or long itineraries - An expansive catalog of GPS coordinates - Major updates to all piloting and shoreside facilities

"Utterly compulsive and unputdownable--the most exciting, authentic, and humanly moving of all the recent Storm books. Brilliantly paced and perfectly balanced. . . . Carrier is a marvelously trustworthy narrator. . . . A terrific book."--Jonathan Raban, author of Passage to Juneau: A Sea and Its Meanings and Bad Land: An American Romance

"A wonderful story. An extremely well-written account of the events as I knew them. I commend Jim Carrier for a magnificent job."--Jerry D. Jarrell, Director, National Hurricane Center

In October 1998, the majestic schooner Fantome came face-to-face with one of the most savage storms in Atlantic history. The last days of the Fantome are reconstructed in vivid and heartbreaking detail through Jim Carrier's extensive research and hundreds of personal interviews. What emerges is a story of courage, hubris, the agony of command, the weight of lives versus wealth, and the advances of science versus the terrible power and unpredictability of nature.

Great Concise Summary for Hawaii Cruisers 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Thousands of people cruise around the Hawaiian Islands every week. Anne Vipond speaks directly to this group of visitors, explaining how to get the best experience out of your Hawaiian cruise vacation.

The book begins with a very nice reference area helping you understand the basics of a cruise ship and the background of the culture and history of Hawaii. Both of these are things you might normally overlook in a Hawaii travel book - but both are really important to helping you really enjoy your vacation by cruise. The more you are prepared for how a cruise ship works - and the more you understand the background of the peoples and landscapes of Hawaii - the more meaningful your trip is.

The book goes island by island, allowing you to quickly page to whichever island you're interested in and scan through the attractions. That way you can bring the book with you on the ship, bookmark whichever island is coming up next, and scan to see what you should watch out for. There are nice color photos so you can see exactly what the lava tubes look like, what the sea arch looks like, and so on. As I visited the locations, I was impressed that the book did a great job of showing me exactly what to watch for.

The book keeps a variety of visitors in mind. It talks about which golf courses are nearby, what hiking trails are available, what the beaches are like. It indicates when you should rent a car in advance and when shuttles are available.

There is a very nice pull-out map that has an overview of Hawaii on one side, and up close detailed maps on the other side of the main islands and locations. The book has even more detailed maps of specific areas, like Volcano National Park on the Big Island.

The book is definitely not as bulky as some other Hawaii books out there - but I found this a good thing. This was something I could easily carry with me and thumb through to figure out what seemed most interesting. Then if I wanted really in depth information about one detail, I could go to my specific book to get all the full information. For example, I have the Big Island Revealed which is an entire book just on the "Big Island" of Hawaii since I really wanted to explore there. But I used this book as a guide to figure out which attractions I wanted to see, and then went to the Revealed book to get the mile marker and location and other details.

A great reference book for the cruiser to Hawaii!

Editorial Review:

Sailing through these beautiful tropical islands by luxury liner is the North American dream cruise. Our new book covers all the islands and attractions that make this a great cruise. Extensive shore excursion details and cruise-and-stay options included. Beautiful color maps and color photography throughout! Includes giant color pullout map.

Cruising Guide to Western Florida 4 out of 5 stars.
29 of 31 people found this review helpful.

This much-needed guide provide a wealth of useful information for the cruising sailor. Written in an enthusiastic and readable style, the author invites the reader to explore the varied cruising grounds of Western Florida. Of great value in this coastline of difficult channels is the detailed information given for each approach, including low water depths in shoal channels. Another feature is a listing of the charts (by number) to cover each area. Photographs and non-navigational charts are also shown throughout the book. Altogether, an informative and useful guide.

Editorial Review:

Contains firsthand, up-to-date information about marinas, restaurants, shoreside attractions, and water depths. Western Florida offers a tranquil alternative to the fast-paced lifestyle of the eastern coast, and Young leaves nothing unexplored in the waters from Flamingo to the Big Bend. This edition includes specific way points for anchorages and marinas as well as ratings for transient docking fees. Intriguing historical profiles and coastal folklore give visitors the flavor of the region, while sections on unsafe areas and shoals help cruisers avoid dangerous waters.
