Out of date and abbreviated travel book 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I haven't even left for Shanghai yet and I know this book is a disappointment in comparing it with my friend's Lonely Planet and doing some quick online research. It said there weren't any youth hostels (there are several) and the book is lacking a metro map and even a decent street map! The "exploring Shanghai" section is embarrassing small, I don't know if I would be able to keep myself occupied during my visit if this were to be my only guide.

Decent book 4 out of 5 stars.

This book has a few more useful pieces of information that Lonely Planet may not have but I found the LP format to be better laid out. This book does better than LP in the respect of including the Chinese characters on the city maps and also for destinations, hotels, addresses, etc.

Not a Cruising Guide 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book has so little information on cruising and so much on restaurants and B&B's I cannot fathom the title. It is more of a travel guide like a Fodor's than anything that will assist you to cruise this coast in a boat. Depth information, chartlets, anchorages etc etc receive little or no mention. Who needs a B&B when cruising?

Enthusiastically recommended for area boaters, whether residents or vacationers. 5 out of 5 stars.

Now in a revised sixth edition, Cruising Guide to Costal South Carolina and Georgia is an in-depth guide to every last marina, anchorage, creek, nook, and cranny along the South Carolina and Georgia coastline. Author Clairborne Young has applied his years of experience boating in sailcraft and powerboats and personally visited every body of water referenced in this local's-eye-view guide. Maps and black-and-white photographs add a visual touch to the richly detailed descriptions sure to appeal to armchair travelers as well as boat travelers. Cruising Guide to Coastal South Carolina and Georgia is a travel guide, not a how-to guide; the reader's familiarity with principles of nautical operation and safety is presumed, and the main focus is upon the marvelous sights, sounds, and history of the South Carolina and Georgia coast. Enthusiastically recommended for area boaters, whether residents or vacationers.

Editorial Review:

The only cruising guide devoted exclusively to South Carolina and Georgia, this book covers almost every body of water along the coast as far inland as it is safe to navigate. The guide includes maps, historical summaries, coastal folklore, listings of coastal marinas and their services, and tips on shoreside attractions.

A winner 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Before my last vacation, I bought three different travel planner/journals to try out; one was computer based (and I did use it for some data organizing but found that printing it out wasn't as handy or as easy to pack as a notebook) and two were notebooks. One of the notebooks is still buried at the bottom of some pile of papers while the CruiseMinder Journal became my constant companion. It took all my planning notes before the trip and became my journal during the trip.

Since I wasn't up to designing my own travel journal, CruiseMinder had the features I thought that I would want and use: places for organizing trip basics like emergency info, reservation numbers, phone numbers; a planner/agenda section for organizing day-by-day activities; packing lists; an addressbook; a place to keep track of expenses; a large section of formated journal pages with plenty of room for my own day-by-day notes.

The CruiseMinder is simple and practical. There are no avant-garde cutsey quotes or distracting artwork. The typefaces are simple and legible. There are ruled lines everywhere I need to write. The paper is heavy enough that 1)you can write in pen on both sides of the pages and 2) it doesn't pull out of the plastic coil binding. The fact that it is spiral bound made it a lot easier to stuff notes and receipts between the pages as the trip went on.

I am very disorganized so the CruiseMinder was very helpful for me to keep all the necessary information in one place. In fact, I'm here today buying another CruiseMinder for my next trip.

Editorial Review:

The CruiseMinder Journal is ideal for anyone planning to take a cruise. First, it offers pre-departure suggestions such as what to take, tips for packing, a packing checklist, an agenda for planning daily activities, pages for emergency information, addresses for writing home, and much more. Once underway, the roomy daily diary pages are just the right size to chronicle up to 31 days' adventures at sea or ashore. There are also pages for noting details about the ship, the crew, and new friends, too! In the back of the book is a nautical glossary and reference maps of the world. Of course, there are pages to attach photos and also a vinyl pocket for additional photos, cards, receipts, etc. Once home, the CruiseMinder will be a lasting and priceless souvenir of any ocean-going experience! This delightful journal sports a deep purple & gold cover with a spiral binding for ease of writing. Nautical graphics on most pages make it extra fun to use...and a great gift, too!

Needs updating, DVD needs chaptering 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The good:

This book is clearly laid out in a "list" style and has short paragraphs for the most part. It is a quick read, unlike some other packing books ( The Packing Book comes to mind, a little too much information there), and is printed on good-quality paper, not newsprint.

The DVD is very informative, even given that it is also an advertisement for the author's luggage and travel accessories line. She presents everything very clearly as far as how she is able to pack all this stuff in a suitcase (I think it would be excellent for someone going off to college, or someone trying to pare down their wardrobe to a manageable amount), and the scarf wearing ideas are great.

The bad:

The author does not travel light by any means. She definitely writes for the cruise ship/organized tour audience, where someone is either handling your luggage for you and/or you are staying in one place for several weeks. Also for people who think other people are keeping track of what they're wearing. No way would you be able to navigate stairs daily (for train stations and other places) with all the stuff she takes. This is not the book to read for tips if you're trying to backpack through Europe (some hostels or train stations will not let you leave your luggage anywhere, not even in lockers, so you have to carry it around all day), or are trying to travel simply with one carry on and maybe a personal bag.

The DVD is not properly chaptered. In fact, when I put it in my computer to view, it looked like it had been dubbed directly from her VCR tape--the title even came up as "DVD Video Recorder". The menu looks just like what you'd get from a home DVD recorder--you can move through the recorder-made "chapters", but they are not titled.

It would have been nice to see how you got 35 outfits from what she had hanging behind her (Smart Packing for Today's Traveler has actual pictures of both clothing types and combinations). A swimsuit with a sarong is okay for around the pool or walking around a beach town (although shorts would be far more useful as you have pockets), but I wouldn't call it an outfit, as (like workout clothing or PJs) it is for a single purpose. A travel outfit needs to be wearable in a variety of places. Also, many people see jackets/sweaters as functional, not decorative--if it is not needed for warmth, it is not worn, as it is just one more thing to drag around or leave behind somewhere.

Bottom line: This is a good book for those who are going on longer trips and the aforementioned child off to a college dorm with limited space. It would be nice to see a new edition where she also covers traveling with just a carry-on and a personal bag.

3.5 stars.

Editorial Review:

This is quite simply the most important book ever written in the English language by a military man on the subject of equestrian travel. It was designed to be used by the United States cavalry. Yet it differs from traditional manuals in that it has says nothing about drills and everything about horse journeys. If you want to learn how to properly pack and ride a horse over extremely long distances, then you are holding the cavalry man's sacred text in your hands. At the dawn of the 20th century experts were busy predicting the imminent demise of the horse. Mankind's most historically influential comrade would make way for the automobile, cynics said. Yet the young author of this remarkable volume disagreed with the critics. No machine of steam and steel, of cog or cam, no vapor-fed motor, no craft propelled by batteries or boilers would ever successfully displace the horse from our on-going needs, advised Boniface. Part text book, part history book and all inspiration, "The Cavalry Horse and His Pack" is the lasting tribute to the great horseman and talented writer who foresaw the day when horse travel would once again flourish and a book such as this one would be cherished by unforeseen generations of Long Riders, cavalry students and horse lovers.
