How It's done! 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A very good book, a definite read for anyone looking to learn more about start up business or true entrepreneurship.

Although, I think it's very important to look at the fact that things are much different now of days then when Ray Kroc started up Mcdonalds. It is very inspiring though to find out how old he was when he started this business. Though, it's nice to read of all these young kids starting up business, it's also nice to read about a man in his 50's finally doing a start up that he'd dream t of.

Editorial Review:

Few entrepreneurs can claim to have actually changed the way we live, but Ray Kroc is one of them. His revolutions in food service automation, franchising, shared national training and advertising have earned him a place beside the men who founded not merely businesses but entire new industries.

But even more interesting than Ray Kroc the business legend is Ray Kroc the man. Not your typical self-made tycoon, Kroc was 52 when he met the McDonald brothers and opened his first franchise.

Now meet Ray Kroc, the man behind the business legend, in his own words. Irrepressible enthusiast, perceptive people-watcher, and born storyteller, he will fascinate and inspire you. You'll never forget Ray Kroc.

Great Travel Tool 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you are going to a really large city, I would recommend the City specific guides over the America's Tops (and thus the 4 stars instead of 5). Still, this guide is a must have for the traveler or even for your own city if it does not have a city specific guide. The information is very accurate and up to date. However, there is a disadvantage to the only top restaurants approach. Also, for example, the Cleveland section includes no Akron restaurants. That may be helpful for the business traveler staying in a downtown hotel, but for most other people it would paint a distorted or limited picture of the available choices. Still, for the price, this is a great deal.

Editorial Review:

MICHELIN Guide New York City 2009 helps those eating in the Big Apple solve the New York City culinary paradox of corner diners and exquisite star-rated restaurants. Covering 565 recommended restaurants for all budgets and cuisines including 100 new listings this year the 2009 Red Guide is the ideal resource for both locals and visitors looking for that perfect spot. All establishments covered in the guide are recommended by Michelin s expert inspectors, so you can book reservations to any listing with confidence; you don t have to wade through confusing or mediocre reviews to try to determine which place is worth your time and money.

The MICHELIN Guide New York City follows a proven formula that has withstood the test of time. Michelin employs full-time local professional inspectors that work anonymously so they are treated the same as other diners. Michelin inspectors check back on previously reviewed establishments and the guide s content is updated accordingly. Starred restaurants are inspected several times a year. Since few culinary honors are as prestigious as a Michelin star rating, restaurants that earn them are sure to consistently offer a superior dining experience so they retain their star rating from year to year.

The guide describes ambience and cuisine for all entries, while restaurants that merit a Michelin star rating will also have a menu selection and color photos. For those with less than a three-star budget, a Bib Gourmand category includes the inspectors favorite places to eat for under $40; that s about 80 restaurants in this year s guide.

In addition to top restaurants, the MICHELIN Red Guide also reviews places to stay, from budget to deluxe. The 2009 Guide features approximately 60 hotels, each held to the same high standards that have made Michelin famous for over a hundred years.

Features:
Expert reviews of 565 restaurants across the five boroughs and 60 Manhattan hotels to suit every budget.
Anonymous, professional local inspectors recommend each establishment.
New color map format makes finding the location you need easier than ever.
Star-rated restaurants feature both menu highlights and full-color photos.
Neighborhood and regional overviews illuminate local history and culinary traditions.
Detailed descriptions of each listing provide the reader with a picture of everything from the ambience to the cuisine.
The Bib Gourmand category indicates the inspectors favorite restaurants for good value.

Don't RV without it. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a very detailed book that gives a very good sense for the various campgrounds in Alaska. It provides phone numbers for most places, and we were able to call ahead to check availability and if the wash facilities were available and to check hours of operation. GPS locations are also given for each campground. It also lists some points of interest around the area of the campgrounds. This along with The Milepost were invaluable.

Editorial Review:

Detailed routes and advice for heading into the wilds of Alaska and northwestern Canada are provided in this guide for RV and tent campers. This grand tour of Alaska covers the infamous Alaskan Highway, routes throughout the Yukon and Alaskan outback, and the ferry system in southeast Alaska. Campgrounds throughout the region are listed with descriptions of amenities and recreational opportunities, maps, and contact information for each. Important details are discussed, including border crossings, budget planning, vehicle preparation, appropriate clothing, road conditions, and possible wildlife encounters. Included is recreational information on hiking, mountain biking, boating, rafting, kayaking, and viewing wildlife.

Disappointing return to Frommer's NZ 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I took a 6 week trip to New Zealand 6 years ago and depended on two great books that helped me tremendously. One was Frommer's, and the other Lonely Planet. So when I ramped up for a 4-week return visit, the first book I ordered was Frommer's, even though the reviews were not terrific. Well. This book was such a disappointment, and proved virtually worthless in planning my trip, unlike the volume from 6 years ago.

First up, the accomodation section is sorely lacking for (truly) middle-class travelers. As another writer mentions, I was stunned by the abundance of listed lodging in the US$400 - $1000 (and up!) per night range. Yikes!! And I was dismayed by the paltry number of lodgings listed at a more reasonable range of US$150 - $300. I did check out a number of these latter on their websites, as well as the official NZ website, but still found better accomodation for the price through links and connections to elsewhere. I booked 28 nights of lodging in NZ using only 1 suggestion from this edition of Frommers. How disappointing. The other bookings are at some truly wonderful, visually beautiful, upscale places, for good prices at Bay of Islands, Whakatane, Gisborne, Nelson, Hokitika, Haast, Queenstown, Te Anau, and Akaroa, -but none listed in Frommers.

As well, some of the great suggestions for things to see away from the main tourist centers, which I found in Frommer's during my last trip, were absent in the present edition. So, from a lodging perspective and a "see the real NZ perspective," this book is just a complete disappointment.

For a helpful guide to traveling NZ, I suggest The Rough Guide to NZ, and the official NZ website.

Editorial Review:

It’s easy to find a great meal in London, and–with the exchange rate and soaring prices–easier yet to find a meal that is ruinously expensive. But what fun is that? Enter Elaine Louie, a New York Times staffer who writes on food, design, and style. What better person to suss out the spots where the most stylish of Londoners dine while staying solvent? Tracking down leads from architects, curators, designers, and other sources with discriminating taste and exacting palates, Louie profiles fifty venues that would be considered great finds at any price and where a meal (not counting tip and beverage) can be enjoyed for less than $25. The restaurants range across ethnicities, and include a substantial number of traditional British and Continental restaurants. They deliver on decor (cool, charming, and/or beautiful) and the food (not necessarily three-course meals, but sometimes more modern, light dining) is always memorable. Follow the leads of fashionable epicures to:
• Baker & Spice, a chic spot favored by the impeccably dressed “yummy mummies,” young mothers who savor the best quiches in London and golden-crusted meat pies filled with baby veggies fresh from the British countryside• the “darling and simple café” atop four floors of fashion in the hip Dover Street Market, centrally located near Bond Street• Crazie Homies in hip Westbourne Grove, where the food is inspired by street vendors and taquerias found throughout Mexico and is freshly made from authentic recipes–try the potent yet refreshingly smoky margaritas• Jin Kichi, the tiny Hampsted eatery, bedecked with red paper lanterns, where the delectable fare means the place is usually filled with Japanese expats

The venues are located in city-central locations and hip neighborhoods and a few of the best are even tucked away in museums and department stores, making this a highly practical guide for travelers who need to plan their time efficiently. In addition to the fifty restaurants with full profiles, the author has included short descriptions of another two dozen places worth visiting.
