Gets better and better the more you read 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The first third of Ms. Painter's book is a reality check for aspiring innkeepers. The middle third is for any innkeeper that needs ideas on how to increase business. The last third, which gets the five star rating, is a well organized overview for the web/internet neophyte like myself. I have already inplemented some of her suggestions and am eagerly awaiting results. Kathy@gracehillbandb

Essential for B&B Owners 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has all you need to know about the B&B business. All current and prospective owners should have this book.

Very informative and helpful. 4 out of 5 stars.

I am considering operating a cabin for winter rentals in Big Bear, California. This book had useful tips and a great overview for how to get started. I especially appreciated the online marketing tips. Looking forward to a future edition to get into more detail about operating a B&B, or in my case, a cabin rental.
Thanks.

A Happy Addiction! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I guess it's time to admit it--after buying and using the book (with the free night certificate, of course) for over 10 years in a row, it's on our short list of things that make life on a budget feel like luxury. The "free night" has made all the difference--it takes the pressure and hurry out of time away together and allows us that extra time to relax. At the same time we've been able to see and experience a variety of places that wouldn't have been possible without the book and its huge number of choices.

Nice book with a coupon included! 5 out of 5 stars.

Gave the book to my parents as a Christmas gift along with a bedandbreakfast dot com gift card. The book comes with a coupon for a free night at one of the B&Bs featured in the book. The book seems to have a nice variety of B&Bs in the U.S.

Editorial Review:

A certificate for ONE FREE NIGHT on your next visit to any inn listed in this guide. A value of $50.00 to $650.00. An easy-to-use reference to carefully selected participating inns. Detailed listings of inns in all 50 states and Canada. State maps locating each inn. More than 300 illustrations. Index of inns with special significance, such as inns in lighthouses, former school houses, and Safari type inns.

The nitty gritty of running the shop. 4 out of 5 stars.
67 of 69 people found this review helpful.

This book goes room by room into decorating, supplies needed, rules, safety, and the likes which really helps when you are running a B&B. IT failed to really go into depth about the business aspects which I thought was a shame. This book is great if you are already running a B&B or want to decorate your house like one, but I would suggest buying several other B&B books to help give the complete picture. It also include recipies which was an added bonus. A good book for the right need.

Well-Written, Easy Read 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book is a good introduction to the Bed & Breakfast business; I'm glad I read it first. It contains useful information and the tone is pleasant and light. But it is just a little dated (almost 10 years old), and you need to read several more books to get all the information you need (such as The Complete Idiot's Guide. . .)

Editorial Review:

Down to earth advice from an award-winning B&B owner. Illustrated with charming line drawings and lightened by real-life anecdotes, this is an easily accessible guide to an ever growing small-business niche.

Excellent overall how-to 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very concise, well-organized overview of what it takes to run a successful inn. I really liked that it also includes a no-varnish look at the downsides to this business. Well put together and full of useful information, especially the financial data and analysis.

Editorial Review:

With over 70,000 copies sold, this must-have guide has proven itself the best and most reliable source of information for aspiring innkeepers. Highly recommended by both the American Bed and Breakfast Association and the Professional Association of Innkeepers International, it presents the facts from the insiders on how to start, operate, and promote a successful establishment. The best crowd-pleasing recipes from widely acclaimed country inns and bed & breakfasts in the United States are collected in this unique cookbook and travel guide. More than 340 inns and 1,500 recipes are collected here, some from the finest chefs in America, while others represent the best in mouth-watering homestyle cooking.

More than a cookbook, Best Recipes from American Country Inns and Bed & Breakfasts is organized alphabetically – state-by-state. It is a reliable guide to the inns themselves, including addresses, phone numbers, and a listing of activities available at each inn. There are two extensive indexes. One allows you to find the inns by city and state, and the other allows the reader to find any recipe or type of recipe quickly and easily.

Kitty and Lucian Maynard have written two similar books, The American Country Inn and Bed & Breakfast Cookbook, Vol. I and Vol. II. These have been selections of Book-of-the-Month Club, the Better Homes and Gardens Book Club, and Family Bookshelf. The first book was featured on the back of Just Right cereal boxes. Reviews rave about the excellent, tasty recipes:

Editorial Review:

The first comprehensive travel guide to accommodations in convents and monasteries, Bed and Blessings Italy will delight travelers from the first intriguing page to the last. From Rome to Ravello and Sienna to Sicily, Bed and Blessings Italy reveals extraordinary accommodations for budget and savvy travelers alike. Life behind the mysterious monastic walls is a journey into another time, another place -- very much in the real world, yet one step removed. Many of the houses are former palaces and villas, filled with exquisite antiques and religious artwork. All are open to people of any faith, or none at all, whether alone, as a couple or with a family.

In the Jubilee year 2000 Italy expects 30 million visitors, more than 8 times the annual amount! Many will stay in convents and monasteries, which hitherto, people have known about mainly through word-of-mouth. Now, Bed and Blessings Italy will offer travelers a real insider's guide to some of Italy's hidden treasures.

Bed and Blessings Italy is an imaginative and well-researched guide featuring 131 convents and monasteries in some of Italy's finest areas. Mother-daughter team June and Anne Walsh spent two years researching the places in their book, traversing 13 regions of Italy and visiting more than 300 sites. For each entry, the book gives a description of both the physical place and the atmosphere, as well as address, fax and phone numbers, price, number of rooms, availability of meals, languages spoken, directions, and so on. Plus, there is useful information for traveling in Italy in general -- how to make phone calls, use public transportation, etc. Sample forms are provided in Italian to ease the writing or faxing of requests. In addition, the book is illustrated with more than 50 detailed maps and color photos of some of the picturesque houses.

Not what we expected 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This guide was not what we expected. We were hoping it would cover more B&B's in Canada but unfortunately it does not. Also it aims at the more expensive places. We feel that the term "complete" is a little bit over the top... We should have informed ourselves better. Nevertheless the B&B's that are present in the book seem very nice to visit...

one of the few good B & B directories left 5 out of 5 stars.

i stay in Bed and Breakfasts all over the country, they are really great. i use the internet to find a lot of them, most of my old directories were out dated. this is one of the few directories still left that has loads of good information in it. great directory.
