Editorial Review:

There may be a bistro on every block in Paris, but distinguishing the good from the disappointing isn't so easy: these little neighborhood restaurants look alike—zinc (or wood or pewter) bar, with small dining room, daily specials on the chalkboard, husband in the kitchen, wife up front. But the 51 bistros profiled here stand apart from the others by virtue of their food, often regional dishes native to the owners' home province, and wine, often a short but well-chosen list from small vineyards with which the owner has a longstanding relationship.

Some of the gems included in Authentic Bistros of Paris include:

* Le Bistrot de peintre, frequented by artists and gallery owners, with a façade that is considered the most beautiful example of the Modern style in Paris
* The exquisite La Palette, with its incomparable terrace and celebrity clientele, from Pablo Picasso to Catherine Deneuve
* The picturesque La Tartine, “the most-photographed bar in Paris”
* Le Petit fer a cheval, where more than 20 select small-label wines are offered, and served to patrons seated on recycled metro benches or at the horseshoe-shaped antique bar
* Chez Georges, the archetypical Latin Quarter wine bar, frequented by a convivial mélange of old-timers, students, and locals.

This discriminating little guide offers an endless source of charming and unpretentious places to enjoy a morning coffee, savor a memorable meal, or sip an afternoon aperitif in the most authentic Parisian settings.

Sumptuous color photographs throughout.

No traveler should be without an EAT SMART guide. 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 30 people found this review helpful.

The authors have written a series of Eat Smart books that no traveler to foreign countries should be without. Each book covers a separate country--Eat Smart in Turkey, Eat Smart in Brazil, Eat Smart in Indonesia and Eat Smart in Mexico--and is chock full of information that you won't find elsewhere within the covers of one easy-to-carry paperback. Individual chapters cover such topics as the history of the country's cuisine, regional foods, how to shop in the local markets, mail-order sources for suppliers of ingredients, and a collection of recipes for typical dishes found in that country. Especially useful is each book's extensive menu guide, listing menu terms alphabetically in the language of the foreign country, with a description of the dish in English. That section is followed by a chapter titled "Foods & Flavors"--listing the foreign terms for foods, spices, kitchen utensils and cooking techniques, with an English translation/description. These books are well researched, accurate and very informative. Highly recommended. --Sharon Hudgins, editor, Chile Pepper magazine

Editorial Review:

Here's good news for travelers who put food first. The second in the "Eat Smart" series of culinary travel guides contains a treasury of tips for navigating menu and market in Turkey. It also includes recipes, thus broadening its appeal to cookbook lovers as well.

Editorial Review:

Modest prices, generous servings, friendly owners, and a devoted local clientele all define these cafés, bars, restaurants, and pizzerias where you can taste the traditional everyday cuisine of Argentina in authentic settings. New or old, each one of the seventy profiled here has details that make them worth visiting. Many were the settings for clandestine political meetings in the days before the May Revolution; others provided inspiration for the artists and writers, including Jorge Luis Borges, who frequented them. At one bar, the most prestigious young tango musicians of Buenos Aires gather nightly, and, after a few drinks and a few empanadas (made by the owner himself), spontaneously perform. There’s a tiny parrilla–steak houseknown not only for the best roasted meat at the best price but for its eternally festive atmosphere and chaotic charm. At another intimate pulperia, simple homemade meals are served communally at a wooden marble-top table. The Authentic Bars and Cafés of Buenos Aires also includes Gabriela Kogan’s recommendations of what to eat at each venue, a map, and a glossary of Argentine food.

Great book to include in all your retro vacation planning 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have used the reviews while on several different trips, to Las Vegas, San Diego, and in Southern California. A lot of this info could not be found elsewhere!

A word of advice to lucky purchasers of this book however--do double check, call ahead, and make sure your destination still exists! I have made several blunders as well assuming that a place was open for lunch when many are nightspots only.

That said, a great guide (and check out the inside of the Hanalei/Red Lion Hotel in San Diego--the bartenders make a mean scorpion in a nifty souvenier bowl!!)

Editorial Review:

This completely updated and expanded guide to tiki culture in North America and abroad lists, describes, and reviews every known tiki bar, Polynesian restaurant, and other site of interest to fans of “Polynesian Pop.” From tiki godfathers such as Edgar Leeteg and Don the Beachcomber to contemporary tiki artists like Shag and Bosko, this resource covers all things tiki in prose that is witty, entertaining, and essential for anyone who has ever stepped up to a bar, glanced up at the pufferfish hanging from the ceiling, and ordered a Singapore Sling. An expanded offering of recipes for classic cocktails, a larger glossary of tiki terms, and more resources for buying tiki goods and artifacts are included in this revised edition. Reminiscences of famous points of interest that have closed are provided for the completist, for historical perspective, and for those seeking information on the current status of a favorite tiki site.

Join Cheryl and Bill Jamison, James Beard Award winners of The Big Book of Outdoor Cooking and Entertaining, on a gastronomic tour around the world

After years of writing award-winning cookbooks, renowned culinary experts Cheryl and Bill Jamison were ready to take a break. So in the fall of 2005 they packed their bags, locked up their house in Santa Fe, and set off on a three-month-long visit to ten countries—all on frequent-flier miles.

Among their stops were:

Bali
Where they celebrated a second honeymoon in Ubud and encountered a rogue monkey

Australia
Where they found the world's best breakfast sandwich and visited family-owned wineries

Thailand
Where they took a wild ride on an elephant in an enormous forest reserve

India
Where they found themselves in the midst of Diwali, the Festival of Lights

China
Where they attended a banquet of local Chiu Chow cuisine that required hours of preparation by the "Emeril of Chaozhou" and forty cooks

South Africa
Where they went on a safari among rhinos, giraffes, and very hungry lions

Brazil
Where they soaked in the sun and Creole flavors of the coastal town of Salvador

Combining the intelligence and humor of Anthony Bourdain with the charm and insight of Frances Mayes, Around the World in 80 Dinners transforms traveling into an unforgettable odyssey.

Editorial Review:

Since its publication in 1998, “The $100 Hamburger- A Guide to Pilot’s Favorite Fly-In Restaurants” has become more than a book. It is a cultural phenomenon felt far outside its intended target market, general aviation owner pilots. Virtually every aviation magazine has written about the book. The April 2001 edition of Plane& Pilot referred to it as “general aviation’s version of the Zagat Guide”. The November 2001 edition of Flying pointed it out to “Fly-in diners intent on finding decent $100 Hamburgers.” The mainstream media has covered as well. The July 26, 2001 edition of The Wall Street Journal featured an above the fold, front page article of 23 column inches. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune and others had written flattering feature articles on our book over the life of the next edition. The book’s companion website clocks over 450,000 site visits per month. Each week it receives 50 to 100 updates (PIREPs) from our pilot readers. These PIREPs affect over 80% of the sites reported on in the book. New restaurants have opened, some restaurants and even some airports have closed. Today only twenty percent of the data from the current edition is fully accurate. The new edition will feature over 80% new content – new restaurants, new airports, and completely updated reports on both from pilots all over the US, Canada, and the UK.
