Profiles of more than fifty establishments that have supplied goods and services to royalty–and the merely discriminating–for more than one hundred years

"A gentleman," Winston Churchill once observed, "buys his hats at Locks, his shoes at Lobbs, his shirts at Harvie and Hudson, his suits at Huntsman and his cheese at Paxton and Whitfield."

Luckily for the gentlemen–and gentlewomen–among us, all of these shops and dozens more are still in business, providing the traditional British goods and food that they've been supplying Londoners for a century or more. More than thirty venerable stores, along with another twenty or so eateries, are profiled in The Historic Shops and Restaurants of London.

"The most beautiful shop in the world . . ." is how Esquire magazine describes John Lobb, Bootmaker's opulent premises in Mayfair. Less grand, but no less quaint, is Paxton and Whitfield, now on Jermyn Street, which dates to 1742 when cheese monger Stephen Cullum sets up his stall in Clare Market. (Now the shop sells the most prized artisanal cheeses in Great Britain.) Have a drink at the long, narrow little Grapes Pub. Built in 1720, on the site of a previous pub, the Grapes was a working class tavern that Charles Dickens knew well. As a child, he was made to stand on a table and sing to the customers. As an adult, he immortalized it as the Six Jolly Fellowship Porters pub in Our Mutual Friend. These are only a few of the many of the establishments described that are holders of the Royal Warrant, dating back to the 15th century and still granted today to recognize excellence and quality.

Bespoke shirt-makers, hatters, haberdashers, perfumers, bookstores, chemists, an umbrella maker, and chocolatiers are only a few of the small specialist shops included, most of which are located in the most quaint and beautiful settings in London.

Also included are traditional restaurants and bars, ranging from picturesque pubs and "caffes" to fish'n'chips stands and eel-and-pie shops.

Great taste, low calorie, easy preparation 5 out of 5 stars.

Have tried quite a few recipes and no disappointments. Always a pleasant surprise with so few ingredients and so few calories. Highly recommended for working people with little time and gourmet taste who are trying to eat healthy.

the quick stir chocolate cake is always a hit and no eggs! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love the simplicity of this book and I always have the ingredients on hand.

Nasty! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I tried maybe 10 recipes in this book, and they were all horrible. On a positive note, I can say that the recipes make huge portions on extremely little money, so this would be a great depression cookbook. The very worst were the sauces, with "Sauerbraten Sauce" taking the cake for the most disgusting. A hot dog, mac & cheese, and jello is a cheap meal too, and tastes a whole lot better than anything in this book. Also, even though these recipes are low fat, they are not low calorie as they are loaded with sugar (for example, "Kix" bar cookies (Kix cereal and TONS of white Karo...not something that would work for your average dieter). I had this book for 1 month and threw it away.

Great diner, great cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This cookbook has a variety of recipes that I haven't seen served at Moody's, however, they are wonderful. I especially like the Sweet and Sour Chicken and Enchiladas Supreme. It is a great buy and offers a variety of recipes which allow you to cook from scratch while living on a budget.

Editorial Review:

Here is a larger, redesigned edition of a tried-and-true classic cookbook inspired by the favorite Maine diner of travelers and "natives" alike! Like its famous namesake eatery, this cookbook almost needs no introduction. The original edition went into 15 printings, because recipes such as these simply never fall out of fashion. However, even more good recipes have been approved and appreciated by the clientele of Moody’s Diner in the past decade or so and more great anecdotes and photographs have been collected, so clearly it was time for a bigger and better edition of What’s Cooking at Moody’s Diner. Fifty-nine new recipes were added, and -- by popular demand -- the "diner-size" recipes are now presented in "family-size" versions as well.

Great BBQ Guide 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I just moved to North Carolina a few years ago, so this guide to NC BBQ has been indispensible. Garner has spent many years sampling and reviewing NC BBQ, and he really seems to know what he's talking about in his reviews. He's picked the 100 best BBQ joints in NC and gives a wealth of info about each, including address, phone number, hours, menu items, etc. Of course, he spends the most time talking about the BBQ.

The intro contains a concise history of NC BBQ, including a pretty thorough discourse on the differences between Eastern Carolina BBQ and Piedmont BBQ. I'm a newcomer to NC BBQ, which usually consists of smoked pork with a vinegar-based sauce, so this background info is helpful. Most of the places he reviews are well-known locally and are pretty casual, preferring to put their emphasis on the BBQ instead of the atmosphere. A terrific guide and an enjoyable read. Highly recommended for NC residents and fans of BBQ.

A "must-have" for barbecue epicureans 5 out of 5 stars.

Bob Garner's Guide to North Carolina Barbecue is a regional restaurant guide to what are arguably the best barbecue joints North Carolina has to offer. Each individual restaurant is presented with its address, its hours for serving barbecue, and a brief yet mouth-wateringly descriptive of its barbecue styles, special touches, and occasional, its limitations. Bob Garner's Guide to North Carolina Barbecue is recommended as a "must-have" for barbecue epicureans who either live in North Carolina or are simply passing through -- even if only briefly.

Great as always, but no Bib Gourmands! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Michelin guides are usually quite excellent. This one does not disappoint, with its helpful classifications by star, cuisine, neighborhood, as well as easy-to-read maps of an otherwise maze-like Tokyo, and last but not least, it's surprisingly good bind quality and affordable price.

Normally, I appreciate being able to browse through the hundreds of choices from 1-3 stars, "Bib Gourmand" (value picks), and "Knife & Fork only" (no-star) picks. That gives me the option of mixing in a few star-based restaurants with a handful of more practical choices for my budget.

However!! ...that's where this 2008 Tokyo guide throws me off a bit... In this first edition, all 150 restaurants have stars, which, admittedly, is something to be celebrated -- but instead of having 400+ non-star/value choices to complement the star-rated restaurants, you have, er... none!

This isn't a deal-breaker, but is something one should be very aware of if you're like me and mostly looking for the value picks. Those of you with deeper wallets are unaffected.

Some super-traditional, omakase-only (chef's selection) Japanese restaurants, including some listed, supposedly (according to magazine interviews and TV shows) do not take reservations in English, nor will they serve non-Japanese speaking tourists without a translator -- I found it interesting that the book made no mention of that. Just to clarify (not justify), the restaurant's reasoning is not based on racism, but that they feel they can't take that much money and claim to serve your needs if they cannot communicate with you and understand your wants.

In any event, I'm sure Michelin will be looking to add more non-star/value restaurants in their second edition, at which point, this will be a solid 5-star pick for someone looking for an assortment of great places to dine/stay in Tokyo.

Editorial Review:

The Michelin Guides offer a selection of the best hotels and restaurants in every price category. These establishments are chosen by a team of full-time inspectors with a professional background in the industry. They cover every corner of the countries, visiting new establishments as well as testing the quality and consistency of the hotels and restaurants already listed in the guide.

Editorial Review:

Next year will mark the 75th anniversary of America's most legendary highway, Route 66. This 2,400-mile stretch of interstate runs across eight states and straight through the American psyche. John Steinbeck, Woody Guthrie, and carloads of nuclear families from the 1920s to the 1960s threaded their way through the heartland, and the unique restaurants that blossomed along Route 66 are justly celebrated. There are other successful road guides, but Marian Clark's The Route 66 Cookbook is the only culinary guide to what Steinbeck dubbed "The Mother Road." It includes over 250 delicious, time-tested recipes from places like the U Drop Inn, the Covered Wagon Trading Post, the Pig Hip, and the Bungalow Inn. It is also a nostalgic recreation of the Route 66 of the past, with stories from the waitresses and cooks who poured the coffee and baked the pie. With 105 b&w illustrations--as well as a new 16-page color section--this is a gem of Americana, and a treasury of comforting dishes from a time when the flavors along the road changed as dramatically as the landscape and accents as you sped across the heartland.

Editorial Review:

There is nothing more "Jersey" than a diner. Adorning the highways and byways of fully half of the state’s 567 municipalities, no one in New Jersey lives far from one. There are more diners here than in any other state, and on top of that, two of the three remaining diner manufacturers are located in the Garden State.

In a year of roadside research, Peter Genovese talked to owners, employees, and customers, and ate more bacon and egg sandwiches than he cares to remember. The result is a funny, revealing book about a beloved American institution. Whether you want to know where and how diners started, who invented eggs served in a skillet, why these twenty-four-hours-a-day eateries are so popular, or, most important, which one has the best French toast, Jersey Diners has the answers.

Packed with facts, trivia, and stories about the owners, employees, and clientele, the book is also complemented with over three hundred evocative, beautiful photos of the buildings, their distinctive décor, the food, and the people who love it from Sussex to Salem counties. In addition, this newly revised edition includes a fully updated directory that details where you can find every diner throughout the state.

Great little guide for real dining in Nashville 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Handy size and chocked full of good info on the local favs here in Nashville. Proves far more useful than many of the mainstream guides from other publishers by giving readers a real look at primarily non-chain restaurant dining in Nashville. Truly, where the locals eat.

The book covers a huge variety of dining categories- the editors did a great job of reviewing just about any dining possibility imagineable. I'll keep this guide in the car for those moments when I'm drawing a blank on where to eat or if I want to try something new.

Will also be good for arming visitors & family with their own guide to eating in Nashville and save me the time of describing our personal favorites...

I'll look forward picking up a few more if they come out for travelling (Atlanta GA, Columbus OH would be great!) - just too useful and convenient.

If you frequently travel to or live in Nashville, TN you'll undoubtedly enjoy this dining guide!

Editorial Review:
