Editorial Review:

Dodging minefeilds in Cambodia, diving into the icy waters outside a Russian bath, chef Bourdian travels the world over in search of the ultimate meal.

The only thing Tony Bourdain loves as much as cooking is traveling, and A Cook's Tour is the shotgun marriage of his two greatest passions. Inspired by the question, 'What would be the perfect meal?', Tony sets out on a quest for his culinary holy grail.

Our adventurous chef starts out in Japan, where he eats traditional Fugu, a poisonous blowfish which can be prepared only by specially licensed chefs. He then travels to Cambodia, up the mine-studded road to Pailin into autonomous Khmer Rouge territory and to Phnom Penh's Gun Club, where local fare is served up alongside a menu of available firearms. In Saigon, he's treated to a sustaining meal of live Cobra heart before moving on to savor a snack with the Viet Cong in the Mekong Delta. Further west, Kitchen Confidential fans will recognize the Gironde of Tony's youth, the first stop on his European itinerary. And from France, it's on to Portugal, where an entire village has been fattening a pig for months in anticipation of his arrival. And we're only halfway around the globe...

A Cook's Tour recounts, in Bourdain's inimitable style, the adventures and misadventures of America's favorite chef.

Only a picture book 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I should have perused this in more detail at the bookstore, but alas I got too excited to see another book by Mr. Bourdain. I finally looked at it this weekend and much to my disdain it is primarily pictures. Nice pictures, but only pictures nonetheless. There is some minor text but not enough. I was hoping to find out more back stories about what happened, biting commentary (related to the episode not FoddTV "chefs")maybe lists of places from the show, recommendations of restaurants to eat at, etc.

I am a huge fan of Anthony Bourdain and of No Reservations, this book just didn't cut it for me.

Editorial Review:

An illustrated, behind-the-scenes travel journal of Anthony Bourdain’s global adventures.

More than just a companion to the hugely popular show, No Reservations is Bourdain’s fully illustrated journal of his far-flung travels. The book traces his trips from New Zealand to New Jersey and everywhere in between, mixing beautiful, never-before-seen photos and mementos with Bourdain’s outrageous commentary on what really happens when you give a bad-boy chef an open ticket to the world. Want to know where to get good fatty crab in Rangoon? How to order your reindeer medium rare? How to tell a Frenchman that his baguette is invading your personal space? This is your book. For any Bourdain fan, this is an indispensable opportunity to hit the road with the man himself.

George Motz is an American Hero! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I love this book! I've been obsessed with Hamburger America since I saw the documentary on the Sundance Channel. The documentary makes most of the content tackling similar subjects on the Travel Channel, Food Network, History Channel, etc., seem like insipid, dumbed-down crap. It is beautiful to watch the small-time, low-key purveyors of American tradition talk about the simplicity of what they do. The book is a great read, with beautiful photographs and loving tributes to a vanishing America that's rapidly becoming standardized, corporate-ized,bland-ized, Wal-Martized, Starbucksized, Bush-ized, and stupid-ized. I keep it on my bedside.

I am tempted to take off a star because this sampling of American tradition was actually printed IN CHINA! Nothing against the Chinese, but this seems sad, in a way.

Reading the book and watching the video makes me hungry, but if you eat enough of this stuff, it will probably kill you.

Editorial Review:

Whether you're an armchair traveler, a serious hamburger connoisseur, or a curious adventurer up for a road trip, Hamburger America will be your guide to reclaiming this precious slice of Americana. No other food says “America” like the hamburger, and documentary filmmaker George Motz has made it his personal mission to save our nation's unique burger identity. He has traveled across the country in search of the best burger joints - those that have survived outside the fast-food mainstream - and has documented their rich histories and one-of-a-kind taste experiences. This edition of the book includes George Motz's 1 hour documentary “Hamburger America” that profiles 8 burger joints across the USA.

Editorial Review:

John Barlow, self-confessed glutton, found himself in a tricky situation: living in one of the most meat-loving places on earth, married to a vegetarian.  The Barlows live in Galicia, the misty-green northwest corner of Spain, and home to a population that reveres and consumes every part of the pig. This gets Barlow thinking about the nature of our relationship with food—what’s delicious, what’s nasty, and what sort of obligation we have to the animals we eat. Over the course of one glorious, bilious year, Barlow vows to eat everything but the squeal.  In his travels, Barlow takes part in the thousand-year-old antthrowing festival of Laza. He makes pig-bladder puddings for carnival. He washes down lots of pork with lots of wine.

In the tradition of Calvin Trillin and Anthony Bourdain, Everything but the Squeal is an adventure in extreme eating, a hilariously quirky travel book, and a perceptive look at how what we eat makes us who we are.

Editorial Review:

MICHELIN Guide New York City 2009 helps those eating in the Big Apple solve the New York City culinary paradox of corner diners and exquisite star-rated restaurants. Covering 565 recommended restaurants for all budgets and cuisines including 100 new listings this year the 2009 Red Guide is the ideal resource for both locals and visitors looking for that perfect spot. All establishments covered in the guide are recommended by Michelin s expert inspectors, so you can book reservations to any listing with confidence; you don t have to wade through confusing or mediocre reviews to try to determine which place is worth your time and money.

The MICHELIN Guide New York City follows a proven formula that has withstood the test of time. Michelin employs full-time local professional inspectors that work anonymously so they are treated the same as other diners. Michelin inspectors check back on previously reviewed establishments and the guide s content is updated accordingly. Starred restaurants are inspected several times a year. Since few culinary honors are as prestigious as a Michelin star rating, restaurants that earn them are sure to consistently offer a superior dining experience so they retain their star rating from year to year.

The guide describes ambience and cuisine for all entries, while restaurants that merit a Michelin star rating will also have a menu selection and color photos. For those with less than a three-star budget, a Bib Gourmand category includes the inspectors favorite places to eat for under $40; that s about 80 restaurants in this year s guide.

In addition to top restaurants, the MICHELIN Red Guide also reviews places to stay, from budget to deluxe. The 2009 Guide features approximately 60 hotels, each held to the same high standards that have made Michelin famous for over a hundred years.

Features:
Expert reviews of 565 restaurants across the five boroughs and 60 Manhattan hotels to suit every budget.
Anonymous, professional local inspectors recommend each establishment.
New color map format makes finding the location you need easier than ever.
Star-rated restaurants feature both menu highlights and full-color photos.
Neighborhood and regional overviews illuminate local history and culinary traditions.
Detailed descriptions of each listing provide the reader with a picture of everything from the ambience to the cuisine.
The Bib Gourmand category indicates the inspectors favorite restaurants for good value.

Great Travel Tool 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you are going to a really large city, I would recommend the City specific guides over the America's Tops (and thus the 4 stars instead of 5). Still, this guide is a must have for the traveler or even for your own city if it does not have a city specific guide. The information is very accurate and up to date. However, there is a disadvantage to the only top restaurants approach. Also, for example, the Cleveland section includes no Akron restaurants. That may be helpful for the business traveler staying in a downtown hotel, but for most other people it would paint a distorted or limited picture of the available choices. Still, for the price, this is a great deal.
