Okay... 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I really like Rick Steves and he gives sound advice. I suppose this map would have been great if we hadn't been travelling so much by car... We drove from Manchester, England to the Scottish Highlands and this was just not detailed enough. The free map we got from the car rental agency was exactly what we needed. We also brought MultiMap.com printouts with detailed driving directions to each of our destinations. This is a good quality map and gives a great overview, but beware if you're driving.

Editorial Review:

Designed specifically for Rick's travel audience (or users) these maps highlight choice destinations throughout Britain and Ireland in a colorful, easy-to-use format on high-quality paper that lasts over many trips:

* Cuts the Clutter: While big cities are left for navigational purposes, this map is otherwise stripped clean and filled in only with places that matter to travelers. * Guidebook-Friendly: At a glance, all the places you read about in Rick's Britain, Ireland and London guidebooks pop right out in a crisp, easy-to-read format. * Rail or Road: Includes important train lines and highways (and ferry routes) for easy route-planning, no matter how you'll get around. * The Back's Even Better: The reverse side includes a colorful, detailed heart of London map, locating sights, hotels and restaurants from Rick's London guidebook. A handy London Tube map, too!

Editorial Review:

You can spend years in Paris and never hear the same answer twice to this cookbook's underlying question: what is the difference between a bistro, a brasserie, and a wine bar? In his third cookbook, acclaimed author and expert on all things French Daniel Young explains the nuances between the three, as he takes home cooks on a vibrant, spirited tour of Paris's best eateries.

Daniel explains that, as true Parisians know; a bistro is a small, informal restaurant serving a few simple, hearty dishes, while a brasserie is a larger, cafe–restaurant providing continuous service and rough–and–ready food. In a wine bar, expect to find a large selection of wines by the glass and light bites to go with them.

Daniel also introduces home cooks to many of his favorite spots (some are famous, others are his own best–keep secrets) and presents classic recipes from each, including Salmon Terrine with Leeks and Pesto, Cream of Carrot Soup with Cumin, Pan–Grilled Rib Steak with Béarnaise Sauce, and Warm Almond Cake with Caramel Cream. Bistros, brasseries, and wine bars, define what it means to be out and eat out in Paris, to dine simply and very well. Theirs is the food that nourishes and sustains the Paris of Parisians – the real and everyday Paris – with local flavor, style, sophistication, personality, and attitude.

Chicago-go! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Chicago's one of my favorite cities, but I wanted to spice up my trip a bit this time, and try some new restaurants and such. This book was perfect. The recommendations were really good--I hate feeling like I wasted a meal out when I'm on vacation. Every recommended restaurant I tried was a hit! The shopping part of the guide was really useful, too. I found some really unique gifts for the folks back home, and a bunch for me too! Nothing like coming home from a trip looking like a million bucks! Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

Discover a unique vision through these witty, urban city guides that focus on locally-owned eating, shopping, and lodging establishments. The numerous distinct businesses are hand-picked by the authors, giving these convenient references a personal feel that can be enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. Explorers will delight in the luscious photographs, easy-to-read maps, and compact size, making them perfect for throwing into a bag and taking on a tour of the town.

Great for foodies 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is very comprehensive to those who take eating out at French restaurants seriously. And I know many people who do.

Great resource 4 out of 5 stars.

The book is a great resource when traveling to French speaking countries - at least area's where english is not spoken

A must-have for your kitchen 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a must-have for any francophile gastronome or would-be frequainter of french bistroux. A helpful aid in the kitchen and to the chef who would go that extra way to present a gourmet meal to guests in the mother tounge. Bon appetit!

Just "okay" 2 out of 5 stars.

I had this book in Italian for a trip to Italy 2 years ago, and I must have a bad memory! The listings are by courses ie: Entre, appetizer, soup, etc. When you go to look things up - alphabetically would be best! Some dishes have meat, veggies, sauces, etc. all together. So it was nearly impossible to look up individual names of things, unless you know what catagory to check.
The good part is the book is tiny enough to fit into an evening purse....but unfortunately, not very easy to use.

Don't Leave Home Without It! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is THE most important book in our travel library, we have used it all over France and seldom found an item on a menu, no matter how regional and obscure, that it couldn't enlighten us about. Over the course of many years, we have given away numerous copies, including one to our favorite restaurant hostess in Paris, so she can improve her English explanations to her non-French-speaking customers.

As indispensable as any map or guide book 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

If you are going on a trip to Japan, take "What's What in Japanese Restaurants" with you. It is a handy, pocket-sized reference book that will save you many a stomach-ache and hopefully let you discover many a good taste. Not all strange Japanese food is to be feared!

The guide outlines many of the main Japanese foods, a few ways to eat them and some simple restaurant etiquette. The food are named in both English and Japanese, with the Japanese written in Katakana and Hiragana. This is important, as most Japanese menus will not contain an English translation.

The books small size is most convenient, as luggage space can be at a premium. In the end, you will be glad you brought this book along.

For the adventurous 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book is more suited to those on a culinary tour of Japan, or those looking to taste the entire culture. I went on a short business trip, and ordinary guidebooks seemed to have enough information for survivial (for me at least).

If you're the sort of person who likes to try everything, this book may be for you. For a one week trip, I did not have time to take advantage of all of the information.

Editorial Review:

The first and only guide of its kind offering practical tips on what to order and how to enjoy it. Alongside extensive sample menus, this handy volume also explores the history of Japanese restaurant etiquette, the emphasis on visual presentation, and regional variations.
