A Cozy Read about France 5 out of 5 stars.

Peter Mayle's "French Lessons" is an engaging book about French cuisine. He takes the reader off the beaten path to vicariously experience new discoveries. Along the way we find cooking advice (what type of pan to use when making an omelette), health spas, festivals, beaches, marathons and cheese eating competitions.

In one adventure Peter Mayle takes the reader to a Catholic mass which celebrates the expensive black truffle (they are auctioned off before lunch). His vivid prose enlivens the imagination. Through his writing we experience all the nuances he is enjoying.

As someone who makes her own croissants I am always eager to read about French cuisine. This is a warm cozy read, the type of book you curl up with in the winter or read in the summer in the shade.

Peter Mayle, francophile phenomenon and author of A Year in Provence, brings another delightful (and delicious) account of the good life, this time exploring the gustatory pleasures to be found throughout France.

The French celebrate food and drink more than any other people, and Mayle shows us just how contagious their enthusiasm can be. We visit the Foire aux Escargots. We attend a truly French marathon, where the beverage of choice is Chteau Lafite-Rothschild rather than Gatorade. We search out the most pungent cheese in France, and eavesdrop on a heated debate on the perfect way to prepare an omelet. We even attend a Catholic mass in the village of Richerenches, a sacred event at which thanks are given for the aromatic, mysterious, and breathtakingly expensive black truffle. With Mayle as our inimitably charming guide, we come away with a satisfied smile (if a little hungry) and the compelling desire to book a flight to France at once.

This map is OK, not what I was really looking for. This map is best utilized as a general European map to help you plan for your trip. In terms of having enough detail to be incredibly useful, you would be better off with a map that was more country or region specific. It is just a little to general to be of any substantial benefit while travelling.

Just got back from a trip to Tokyo and this book was great. I bought the Rough Guide to Japan as well as this book, and I was glad to have this book while in Tokyo. It provided tons of info and lots and lots of pictures...I like to have pictures when I travel, it helps me make quick decisions about what I want to see and when.

If you are looking for a very comprehensive guidebook on Tokyo, you won't get anything better than Time Out Tokyo. The Time Out guidebooks are almost always very complete with a wide range of activities, restaurant, and recommendations. There is also cultural information in there to help you get a little more acquainted with the cultural differences of the country you are visiting. No matter wat your purpose is for the trip, Time Out Tokyo is definitely a good buy.

Loved this book. Used it in July '08 and it reflected the French passion for food. The restaurants reviewed were accurately portrayed. Their particular specialties were listed as well as the prix fixe & a la carte costs, etc. In short, you have all the info you could possibly want about restaurants...locations, hours, phone & fax numbers. I would definitely use it again for my next trip to Paris. Buy it, you'll really like it.

The big call for the new version is that it is now available in English -- Kind Of! Most of the content of the reviews of restaurants and hotels is about their menu items -- which are listed in their original French. Still, even a little bit of English proves indispensible to help us Anglophiles figure out what hotel to stay at and what restaurant to eat at, even though I'm still not sure what deep fried part of the pig I ate one night! Wish I had bought a French Menu Reader too! During our recent, 1st trip to Paris, we relied heavily on the Michelin guide to ensure the style of food and service was appropriate. We were not disappointed. The reviews were accurate and up to date. Since the guide coevers France as a whole, there is a gap in Paris coverage. There are many more great restaurants not listed, so we recommend getting a second book to supplement their coverage.
