Great Telling of a Great Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Cherry-Garrard is a literate, educated man, writing his experiences as well as including the memories, and journals of the other expedition members. Interesting how this young man of means who is accustomed to comfortable living, could endure such extreme hardship without complaint. The hardship and adventure begins with the terrible storm experienced on the ship from New Zealand to Antarctica. The description of this ordeal grabs hold and they haven't yet reached the Southern continent. The first year on the ice and the sledge trip during the winter months is gripping.

A compelling aspect is the matter of fact descriptions of the unbelievable [to us] hardship and daily rigors of living, sledging, carrying out scientific experiments, etc., in -20 to -70 degrees. Wind conditions that regularly must have sent wind chill factors [they never recorded such a thing] to -80 to -100 degrees, and the physical exertion. They regularly experience frost bite, hunger, occasional ptomaine from spoiled food, symptoms of Dysentary, and scurvy. Yet, they are able to recover. They never lose their spirit and comeraderie.
Until discovering the Pole parties' bodies the following year, Cherry-Garrard writes of his contentment and pride in being a member of this expedition.
In the subsequent years, until he writes the book in 1922, he becomes guilt ridden as to whether he and the other survivors could have reached and saved Scott before they died,[it seems apparent they could not have reached them. [In fact, rescueres would probably have died in an attempt]. It's impossible to imagine living in such conditions for 3 years. Constant cold, diet of seal, penguin, sometimes dog and horse, blubber, biscuit, and tea. Occasionally, chocolate, butter and sugar as a treat.
I agree with other reviewers that there is redundancy and repetition but I found it interesting to read how different members experienced the same events.
I thought from reading other books that Scott was somewhat naive and a dreamer when it came to planning and preparing for this expedition. I now feel differently. Scott prepared and planned diligently. He was well liked and respected by his men, in general, he was a strong leader. A terrible mistake was deciding at the last supply depot, to take 5 men on the final push to the Pole rather than the 4 which was the original plan. The 5th man, for which they did not have adequate supplies and the physical collapse of one member after reaching the Pole, probably cost them their lives.
Reading of a group of men living for years in these conditions, survival aways in doubt, out of touch with the rest of the world, gives perspective and toleration for what we think are trying experiences today. Early explorers are compared to to our astronauts. However, when one considers that communication is constant with space travelers. These men left and were never heard from again until they returned, if they did return, years later.

Editorial Review:

Only the writings of T.E. Lawrence, Sir Richard Burton, and Ernest Shackleton rank with this harrowing memoir by Cherry-Garrard, who accompanied Robert Falcon Scott to the Antarctic on the explorer's doomed quest for the Pole and who was in the party that ultimately discovered Scott's frozen body. This classic of exploration and adventure also includes the original Introduction by the author.

Indispensable in Scandinavia 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I just returned from a two-week adventure in Scandinavia, where I hung out in Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. I had a great time seeing the places where my predecessors came from, and I can attribute much of my trip's success to the "Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2005" guidebook. Mr. Steves has created an excellent and portable all-in-one travel resource for this region. It's well organized, and compact enough to fit in a jacket pocket for consultation on the fly. But most importantly, his hotel, transportation, and attraction recommendations fit my traveling desires and saved me time and money.

For example, finding a decent place to stay in a strange country can be daunting, but Mr. Steves' picks came through every time. His three-tiered rating system based on pricing helped me zero in on optimal accommodations: high (fancier hotels), moderate (nice, but no frills), and low priced (hostels and private homes). I stuck to the moderate level, and the book led me to a good night's sleep in each city. The City Hotel and Rainbow Hotel Astoria in Oslo, Hotel Jorgensen in Copenhagen, and Queen's Hotel in Stockholm were all great for a thirtysomething solo traveler on a budget. They had helpful staff, good breakfasts included with the room, and locations close to transportation centers and attractions.

Getting around Scandinavia was made easier by the hints in "Scandinavia 2005." Taking the night cruise from Oslo to Copenhagen got me on a cruise ship for the first time, and watching the shore slip by while enjoying a nice wine and cigar was sweet. I also took Mr. Steves' advice and reserved a couchette on a night train from Copenhagen to Stockholm (a bit crowded with five other people in the cabin, but efficient nontheless). Both methods enabled me to combine travel with sleep to maximize time and kroner savings. And his admonition to rely on walking and bicycling to intimately experience the cities was smart, especially since I lost seven pounds while seeing the sights!

Finally, Mr. Steves' ratings on things to see and do helped me dive into my Nordic roots. He uses a zero to three triangle rating system (three triangles = don't miss; two triangles = try hard to see; one triangle = worthwhile if you can make it; no triangle = worth knowing about). Based on his recommendations, I experienced cool sights like the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, Christiania in Copenhagen, and the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. Simple hand-drawn maps helped me navigate the cities and easily find these attractions (along with the accommodations listed above). And the additional information he provided enabled me to prioritize my sightseeing based on distance, operating hours, and price.

Of course, no guidebook is perfect because the information is static and recommendations are based on opinion. Admission prices rise, museums change their exhibits, and a "don't miss" attraction ends up being a bust (like the three-triangle Nordic Museum in Stockholm, mainly because Swedish fabrics and dinner settings aren't my thing). But having the "Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2005" guidebook really helped me to achieve an outstanding travel experience I'll never forget. For that, he gets my highest endorsement.

Editorial Review:

Who but Rick Steves can tell travelers the best way to see Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinski, Tallinn, and the Norwegian fjords? With Rick Steves’ Scandinavia, travelers can experience the best of everything Scandinavia has to offer—economically and hassle-free. Completely revised and updated, this guide includes: opinionated coverage of both famous and lesser-known sights, friendly places to eat and sleep, suggested day plans, walking tours and trip itineraries, and clear instructions for smooth travel anywhere by car, train, or foot. America’s #1 authority on travel to Europe, Rick’s time-tested recommendations for safe and enjoyable travel in Europe have been used by millions of Americans in search of their own unique European travel experience.

Makes Me Hungry 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just picked up this book and already, I'm hungry.
Separated by location, category and all time favorites, I have so many new places I want to try. Keep it in your purse or car whenever you leave the house. Reviews on great stuff like burgers, french fries, subs not just the posh restaurants. I love it and can't wait to start trying this stuff.

excellent "great ates" find great food by category or location 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm always looking for new places to try, while at the same time don't want to get burned on a meal/restaurant that isn't great. That's why the PG 2008 guide is fantastic.

This guide has recommendations on restaurants and their specialties. So you always know what to order when you get there.

In ME, decent pizza is hard to find. I checked the Pizza Great Ate, and Regina's is at the top. Regina's is worth the trip. So I know if this book recommends Regina's, then I'm gonna really enjoy all the other recommendations, too.

I'm looking forward to trying more Great Ates. This is a book to keep with you so you can always find a great meal.

An invaluable source 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

If you are at all serious about Italian food, this book is worth its weight in gold on your next trip to Italy. Yes, its big (aprox. 700 pgs), but thats because its a real book, and incredibly thorough. This isn't just some run of the mill pocket guide book thats going to tell you "go here" "do this".

It details the history and culture of each region in detail, so you don't just eat, you understand what and why you're eating what you are. For each major city (and plenty of small villages also!) he will detail the best places to eat, drink, and shop to get the best true local experience.

And because you know the author takes food seriously, you know that you're eating at true, authentic places where locals eat, and you won't fall into the trap of eating at run of the mill tourist driven places (especially if you're in cities like Florence, Venice, or Rome!)

One reviewer complained this book didn't let you know where to go within Italy. Well that's not really its point. The point is that each region has its own unique flair and flavor, and one is not "better" than the other. To try and judge them as so is missing the point. The joy of italy is discovering those unique flavors that each region has unique to itself. (Though he does point out a "Classic City" for each region. That is, the city to go to if you want to experience the most authentic food culture of the region, such as Treviso in the Veneto, Siena in Tuscany, and Rome in Lazio)

What this book WILL do is compliment your trip to any of these regions. Pointing out exactly where to go to find these authentic and unique local dishes.

I'm writing this from Trieste right now, and without this book I would be totally lost as to where to go. The city has tons of run of the mill pizza places but very few places to find authentic local cuisne (and this isn't even a tourist driven city!). As a non-local, wIthout this book to help me find these hidden gems, I would be in a lot of trouble.

A book you will keep with you for the rest of your life. It even has recipes at the end so you can attempt to replicate what you tasted when you get back home!

Editorial Review:

In the most complete gastronomic guide to Italy ever published, Fred Plotkin takes you beyond the traditional tourist experience, revealing the true richness of this nation's extraordinary cuisine and the lifestyle that surrounds it. From country markets and wineries to city restaurants and cooking schools, you will discover Italian culinary treasures and pleasures that no other book offers.

New York's vast array of restaurants and bars can start even the most level head spinning. That's where this portable, illustrated guide comes in. Local experts save readers time and trouble by pointing them to the city's best bets from the little-known Little Italy trattoria to that ultra-hip Soho wine bar or the cheap-but-scrumptious ethnic cuisine of the Lower East Side. The book reviews and ranks more than 1,300 restaurants, while a glossary of food terms helps make visitors order like natives. Maps of Manhattan and the boroughs, along with an extensive, cross-referenced index, make this a must-carry for both visitors and locals.

Pacific Northwest Wining and Dining 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

To counter the damp and dreary days of winter I surround myself with distractions that promise better days to come. At the top of my pile is Braiden Rex-Johnson's Pacific Northwest Wining and Dining. Just looking at the cover of this love letter to NW cuisine warms me. I imagine myself dining al fresco on the patio of this restaurant or a myriad of others. Then I pour over the interior pages, like a gardener pouring over a seed catalogue in winter. I indulge in the descriptions of familiar restaurants and wineries as well as intriguing new ones. I plan our next excursion into Eastern Washington or the Willamette Valley or the always promising Vancouver area, while noting the recipes from these areas that we want to make today and the wines we will want to serve with them. I smile at the quotes from favorite and unfamiliar chefs and feel as though I now know something of what makes them who they are. And then I remember another friend who I want to share this book with and I'm back online to order it. What a perfectly luscious way to wile away the winter days.

Editorial Review:

A beautiful cookbook and guide to the Pacific Northwest's vibrant wine and culinary scene

Blessed with abundant seafood, wonderful produce, and bountiful vineyards, the Pacific Northwest has spawned a unique culinary culture. In this dazzling cookbook, Braiden Rex-Johnson takes us along as she visits the region's most accomplished chefs and winemakers, showcasing the dishes and wines that have made the Pacific Northwest a gastronomic mecca. Brimming with stories and lore, illustrated with 186 gorgeous color photos, and featuring 113 recipes and wine pairings, Pacific Northwest Wining and Dining brilliantly brings to life this region's special culinary character.

Editorial Review:

Created by France's most respected food writer and critic, Gilles Pudlowski, the Pudlo Paris guide to restaurants, cafes, bars, and gourmet shops is now available in English for the first time in its 17-year history. The Pudlo is considered by discerning Parisians as the most informed, sophisticated, and up-to-date restaurant guide published today.

Organized by arrondissement, the guide describes almost 1,000 restaurants in every neighborhood of Paris, ranging from Grandes Tables–the paragons of the French culinary scene–to restaurants that give unusually good value for the price. The Pudlo also lists almost 300 bars, pubs, wine bars, tea salons, and cafes. And–a priceless bonus for the culinary traveler–descriptions of almost 300 specialty gourmet shops.

Gilles Pudlowski has singled out 21 of his personal favorites; 185 restaurants in settings of historical significance; 93 establishments he judges as giving especially good value for price; and 144 places where a meal costs less than 30 euros. You’ll also find a Listing of Establishments by Rating and an alphabetical index singling out establishments with terrace or garden, those open on Sunday, and those open past 11 PM.

Each review in the Pudlo is updated and rewritten annually by Mr. Pudlowski. The Little Bookroom will continue to be the English-language publisher worldwide for upcoming editions of Pudlo Paris as well as Pudlo France (to be published in March 2008).

In Pudlo Paris 2007-2008 you’ll find: reviews of 32 Grand Restaurants–the paragons of the city’s culinary scene; reviews of 965 Good Restaurants & Others–worthwhile venues in every neighborhood; and reviews of 41 of the top international restaurants.

Short profiles of 313 Shops selling:
Kitchenwares/Tabletop, Bread & Baked Goods, Wine, Cured Meat & Sausage, Chocolate, Candy/Sweets, Cutlery, Groceries, Cheese, Ice Cream, Fine Groceries, Books, Pastries, Fruit & Vegetables, Coffee, Regional Products, Prepared Food, Tea.

Descriptions of 281 casual venues throughout Paris (“Rendez-vous”):
Bars, Pubs, Wine Bars, Cafes, Creperies, Tea Salons, Brasseries.

And, prized for being the most up-to-date of the restaurant guides, 141 venues make their first appearance in Pudlo Paris 2007-2008.

Also noted: outdoor dining; open on Sunday; open after 11PM; children’s menus; air conditioning; and all prix fixe and a la carte prices.

thank you for writing this book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Have lived in Austin almost 20 years - picked this book up to keep for out-of-town guests to use, ended up reading it like a novel and tabbing many, many pages of new places I want to eat. Better than a Zagat's-style guide, it's witty, intelligent, and dead-on accurate (so far). Have now given it as a gift to numerous people - here's a great gift idea: buy this book and insert a gift card to a highly-rated restaurant on the page where it's reviewed.

Useless 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

What could be a great resource for local restaurants is not very helpful. My experiences differ greatly from most of their reviews. This is clearly subjective reporting hyping the restaurants of friends and knocking the restaurants that are only guilty of being popular eateries and therefore subject to the scorn of the authors to sell books. The literary equivalent of Jerry Springer; appealing the our lowest voyeuristic vices. Try Zagat for objectivity.

Editorial Review:

Brutally honest, cheeky, and fiercely independent, the definitive restaurant guide to Austin, Texas, is back in a brand-new second edition—bigger and better than ever! Acclaimed critic Robin Goldstein and his team have created a 512-page blockbuster of a book, covering every corner of Austin's eclectic dining scene, from the power steakhouses to the Hill Country BBQ shrines. Fearless Critics dine incognito, accepting no free meals or restaurant ads. Prepare to be shocked by the results: this is a new breed of food writing.
