September Trip 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We recetnly traveled to Amsterdam, Bruges, Brussels and Antwerp. We used Rick's book to select the hotels and the areas to visit versus the bigger name publisher review books (like Let's Go and Formers, etc.). We picked three hotels from his book. Two of the three hotels were great, while one was a bit noisy. Even the hotel that was a bit noisy was a clean, smart hotel in the St. Caterhine neighboorhod section of Brussels. We found his book and recommmedations to be well written, clear and true to form. We also used Fromers guidelbook, in campanion to Rick's, but did not find it to be local enought to our needs. We ate almost exclusively at the restaurants is his book, traveled to the sights, used the train systems and used the maps in his book for our trip. Sometimes when you use a book like this you get one or two great places to stay or to eat, but, with his, it was truely a satisfying experience to go to his book's places and come away satisfied.

We saw other travelers in the regions we visited using his book as well.

We will definitely recommmend this book to novice travelers as well as repeat travelers, and defintely buy one of his books again.

Opinionated is OK, but... 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I like Rick Steves's approach to travel, and much of this book is helpful. BUT: He purposely, and dismissively, leaves out the entire city of Geneva, calling it "boring." Well, when you're basing your trip in Geneva, that's not really news you can use. I think Steves's success has gone to his head -- this level of opinionated advice is useless at best, irresponsible at worst. If you want a comprehensive guide to Switzerland, try Fodor's.

A "Pretty Pictures" Guidebook 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

If you want pretty pictures of a few sites in each city, buy this guidebook.

If you want the in-depth logistical information you need while traveling - doctors in Saigon, how good/bad the train really is, more than a handful of hotels/restaurants in each town, names of interesting shops - buy something else.

I bought this ONLY because Lonely Planet got horrible reviews and Footprint, which are my guidebooks of choice, had not been updated in a couple of years. I will never buy it again.

Great! 5 out of 5 stars.

Like all the Eyewitness Guides I've used, this is chock full of pictures and lively information. I'm sure it will be hugely useful on my trip.

Vietnam and Angkor Wat??? WHAT !!!!!!!!! 1 out of 5 stars.

What happened to the rest of Cambodia? Last time I saw Angkor Wat it was still in Cambodia. What gives? Does Cambodia not rate reviewing? Gezzzz

The inside deal on fabulous yet affordable hotels in the world’s top vacation destinations

Where should we stay?” This may be the most vexing question facing anyone planning a holiday—especially travelers whose resources aren’t unlimited. But finding affordable accommodation does not mean having to settle for surly desk clerks, paltry meals, and a cramped hotel room whose only window faces a brick wall. Breathtaking views, attentive service, great on-site food, and the full range of amenities—all are available at a cost that won’t make you cringe. You just have to know where to look.

That’s where Secret Hotels comes in. Compiled by the editors of Budget Travel magazine, this out-of-the-ordinary guidebook acquaints you with an enticing array of lodgings—from beachside cottages, to hilltop villas, to gracious, family-run guesthouses—where you’ll vacation in comfort and style without having to worry about breaking the bank. Setting its sights on eight of the world’s top travel destinations—Provence, Tuscany, Tahiti, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Cornwall, Bali, and the French Riviera—Secret Hotels scopes out the hidden treasures that, till now, have mostly been known only to the locals. The description of each hotel is accompanied by sumptuous color photos of the grounds and interiors, and contact information and rates (usually less than $200 per night) are provided.

Editorial Review:

You can get to Europe, even travel around it, without help. But without a little pre-trip planning, you’ll make mistakes – wasting both time and money. This book won’t tell you where to go, but it will give you the tools to custom design the best possible journey for your time frame and budget. There are some things, such as rail passes, volunteer projects or cooking courses, that need to be booked in advance. This book will explain which things to plan for, which are best done on the fly, and how to do it.  It will also help you pack what you need, so you don’t end up carrying around items you never use and give budget tricks and skills so you can save £5 - £15 per day with minimal effort (which can add up to £900 on a two-month trip).  Essentially, this book contains the sort of information you could probably figure out on your own after about four or five years on the road.  Just seems a little easier to get it in an hour or two.

Prepare for the adventure with The Rough Guide First-Time Europe.
