Opening the door to Ecuador 5 out of 5 stars.

We have just returned from a month in Ecuador and found the new Rough Guide invaluable. Each chapter is clearly laid out and gives an accurate summary of regional highlights. It definitely made our trip planning and travel much easier. Ecuador is an amazing Andean country, with rainforests, tropical pacific coastline, high active volcanoes and the Galapagos Islands.

The Rough Guide provided us with essential information on how to travel and tips on safety and health proved very helpful.

Thanks also to the authors for including information on the damage being done to Ecuador's pristine rainforest and indigenous communities by a few oil companies. This is something that senstive tourists need to be aware of - the rare and fascinating tribal communities, the jungle wildlife and natural beauty we travelled to see are in real danger because of the actions of a few short term organisations who are right now planning a big push into the Oriente region.

Overall this is a really good, clear guide book with excellent recommendations for where to stay, what to do and even good tips on where to eat, drink and party. Don't go up the jungle without it! Thanks from Carmel McConnell and Catherine Purkiss

Making sense of a huge foreign metropolis 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Having lived in Guadalajara for four years 35 years ago I knew that the city had grown substantially and I would need a guide book to get around. This book is very complete and up to date, much better than I had expected. I especially like the "Getaways" section that suggests day trips all around the region.

Editorial Review:

Award-winning author and Mexico expert Bruce Whipperman knows how to best explore Guadalajara, from finding lovely handicrafts (artesanías) in Tlaquepaque to kayaking at sunset on Lake Chapala. Bruce also provides great travel strategies, including Highlights of the Great Outdoors and Art, Culture, History, and Archaeology. Packed with information on dining, transportation, and accommodations, Moon Guadalajara has lots of options for a range of travel budgets. Every Moon guidebook includes recommendations for must-see sights and many regional, area, and city-centered maps. With guidance on dining in the famed Minerva-Chapultepec district, catching a “Mexican Hat Dance,” and examining archaeological sites at El Iztepete, Moon Guadalajara gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience. Editorial Review:

The best-selling Most Beautiful Villages series now takes colorful, romantic, vibrant Spain as its subject. Traditional architecture and dramatic natural settings place these villages among the most unspoiled and appealing in Europe. Pretty Romanesque churches dominate mountain communities in the Asturias and the Pyrenees; walled hamlets rise from the high plains of Castilla; literary and artistic associations enrich the beautiful remains of Moorish Andalucía.

More than thirty village gems are featured here. From Galicia to the Basque country in the north lie picturesque fishing villages. Patient exploration in the heart of the country reveals such delights as Pedraza's arcaded square seen against a backdrop of snowcapped mountains, or La Guardia's mighty defensive walls towering above the vineyards of Rioja. In the east, the whitewashed houses of coastal Cadaqués have become famous as an artists' colony, while El Palmar is renowned for its paella. And in the villages of Andalucía, like Medina Sidonia, the traces of Moorish civilization can be found.

The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain is completed by special sections on local culinary delights, as well as listings of places to stay and eat and sights to visit. 266 color illustrations.

Worthless 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I am an American studying abroad in Buenos Aires and I wanted to advise anyone who is considering buying this book to save their money. I had been using the Time Out guide in the city, which is infinitely better, but I brought this guide on a trip to Colonia and Montevideo because it had much more information. As it turned out, nothing the guide recommended for Montevideo was true or even open. It listed two vegetarian restaurants, one with three locations throughout the city. I spent the better part of a day walking around the city only to find that not a single one of those four was still in existence. I then found a Lebanese restaurant in the guide and walked there, only to find that it wasn't open either. I thought maybe some shopping would improve my mood... but few of the places listed still exist. We couldn't find the reccomended Baar Fun Fun or the Cafe Brasilero. At this point, I tossed the guidebook in the nearest trashcan. At least for Buenos Aires and Uruguay, its much wiser to stick with time out.

Escape to the Great Outdoors in Style!

Fill your lungs with country air, ride horsebak through a lush valley, spy on starfish, or hike into the desert—and still return to a good meal, fresh sheets, and a hot shower. Our accommodations are handpicked according to four criteria—wilderness setting, serenity, seclusion, and environmental awareness—then divided into categories that describe the experience:

Family Hideout: Discover the great outdoors at full-service resorts and kid-friendly guest ranches with wholesome meals and organized activities like gold panning, lake swimming, and wildlife viewing.

Romantic Retreat: Explore a nearby nature reserve, enjoy rock-climbing class together, take an afternoon snooze by the lake. End your day in secluded adult-oriented accommodations with bubbles and bubbly in an outdoor tub.

Laid-back Adventure: Take it easy in a log lodge or lakefront hotel where activity staff can recommend river-rafting sites and gentle hikes. Return to a soothing back and hot meal.

Rustic Escape: Immerse yourself in nature while staying in a no-frills cottage or cabin. Fire farm-stand vegetables on the grill outside and make your own coffee, just the way you like it.

Luxurious Resort: Indulge yourself at lavish lodgings nestled in the mountains, miles from civilization. Enjoy breakfast on the terrace and a hotstone massage with a stunning river view.

Tranquil Outpost: Saunter along winding trails past glassy mountain lakes and herds of buffalo. Return to a hot tub and hearty meal in your cozy lodge tucked away in the woods

A Travel Guide Without a Focus 2 out of 5 stars.
24 of 30 people found this review helpful.

When I first started travelling to Europe 25 years ago, the Frommer guides were like beacons. They had a very definite goal in mind: To let you enjoy Europe for $XX dollars a day. Their books were fun and informative; but somewhere along the line, the Frommer people lost touch with their leadership.

When you try to write a book for everybody, you wind up writing for nobody. Let us take accommodations as an example: They are classified as Expensive, Moderate, and Inexpensive. Now I am not on public assistance by any means, yet I can barely afford Frommer's Inexpensive accommodations, which average around more than $100 a night.

There are guidebooks which are good at accommodations and restaurants but not on sights; and there are others (like the superb DK Eyewitness Guides) which concentrate on the sights. I am hard put to place Frommer on this spectrum. In the Netherlands, he downplays the Zuider Zee Museum in Enkhuizen and the Open Air Museum in Arnhem, yet spends 3 chapters on Luxembourg, including one on "Planning a Trip to Luxembourg." Hello! When was the last time you got the wife and kiddies mobilized for a fun filled 3 week vacation in the tiny Duchy of Luxembourg?

On the plus side, the "Best of..." lists are a useful counter to the general lack of emphasis in this guidebook.

If you were visiting the U.S., you would want a guidebook to show you why you might want to spend more time in New York than Youngstown. Once the best of guidebook series, Frommer has been reduced to cataloguing sights. Where's the excitement? Not here.

Editorial Review:

  • A highly informative guide to a great trip in the Low Countries
Leads travelers to the best of the Netherlands (almost 1 million North American visitors in 2001), Belgium (capital of the European Union and headquarters of NATO), and Luxembourg (which has more Michelin-starred restaurants per square mile than any other country)
  • Delivers the scoop on top cultural attractions in Brussels, Bruges, Amsterdam, Luxembourg City, and other urban centers
  • Reveals the best local experiences, from the forests and resorts of Belgium's Ardennes and the wine trail of Luxembourg to the windmills, tulip fields, and carnival celebrations of Holland
  • Thoroughly updated to reflect the latest changes in hotels, dining, and attractions

Writers wax lyrical about Ireland's spectacular scenery, but it is the people that make a visit to this enchanting country so very special. Meander down the streets of Dublin, explore ancient castles and journey around the lovely Dingle Peninsula-everywhere Irish hospitality prevails. It is impossible to visit without experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the Irish; from the grand manors to the country farmhouses, you will be welcomed as a houseguest rather than a tourist. Along the way, itineraries guide you through the Emerald Isle, from Dublin's fair city to the hauntingly beautiful scenery of Connemara. 5 Regional Countryside Itineraries, Descriptions of over 120 Places to Stay.
