Undependable and Inaccurate Information 1 out of 5 stars.
26 of 27 people found this review helpful.

As another reviewer alluded, many of the monasteries/convents in this book are included without the nuns'/monks' knowledge or permission. Further, at the end of each state's chapter "other places" are listed for guest accommmodations. The listings are totally inaccurate. Having contacted many of the "other places" I discovered that some have facilites for guests and others do not. The information in the book is not dependable.

Editorial Review:

As the pace of life quickens and people feel depleted physically, emotionally, and spiritually, going on retreat to recuperate and regenerate has become a common practice. The quiet and seclusion of a monastery, abbey, or retreat center provide the time, space, and conditions for the mind and heart to come to stillness. This volume features 127 such places, which the Kellys have visited. About one third of these are new, and the other two thirds come from the Kellys earlier regional guides, Sanctuaries: The Northeast and Sanctuaries: The West Coast and Southwest. In addition, there are over 1,000 listings of other places not visited. Many are Catholic or Episcopalian, but there are also Buddhist, Hindu, Sufi, and even Jewish havens, and a few that have no religious affiliationin all, a choice of over 1,200 retreats, in every state of the union, where it is possible to find refuge, peace, and true refreshment.

Beautifully photographed to take you away to places that you may not have heard of. I like it because the hotels are not your typical hotels, this book highlights those that have original architectural value, and interior design.

Editorial Review:

"One day, I put myself in the car and simply drove. I had no idea where I was going or why. I had no idea ... I would wind up, at dusk, in a lost little valley, turning up the driveway of the Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast."

The best books, as you read them, take you from wherever you are to a place where you want to be. If you're a reader of a certain type--a lover of books, cats, and absurdity of a quiet kind--then the Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast should be on your itinerary. It introduces two fraternal twins, Hector and Virgil, unmarried men who run a cozy establishment on a Canadian island. The book alternates between notes from Hector or Virgil, and "Brief Lives," culled from the B & B's guest book. This variety of perspectives gives Bill Richardson tremendous flexibility, and he weaves all the disparate characters together with an unobtrusive dexterity. The Bachelor Brothers' Bed and Breakfast is a pleasant, soothing, quietly absurd place to be.

Editorial Review:

Featuring Japanese inns, or ryokan, both old and new from inns with a history dating back a thousand years to modern inns with the latest facilities that nonetheless capture the spirit of old Japan. Each of the properties has been handpicked by the authors for their strong design aesthetic, commitment to service and purity of their spring waters. The photographs showcase the resorts at their best, and accurately express the unique architectural design of each ryokan.

Each chapter begins by introducing the area surrounding the inns and their spas, or onsen, and provides a background of its local history, culture and traditions, as well as the natural environment. The text provides information on the design and development of each ryokan, and descriptions of the owners and their clientele. For those planning a visit to an onsen, this book provides contact details and information on the number of rooms, type of facilities and food, as well as vital information on travel and booking procedures and whether English is spoken. For those fascinated by Japanese culture and design, this book is an absolute delight.

Comprehensive history of coastal resorts 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I spent my summers visiting various coastal resorts in New England, so I enjoyed leafing through the pages of this book and revisiting some of my favorite haunts. While I can't appreciate the subtle architectural detail discussed in this volume, I did appreciate the historical background that was presented as a context at many points in the book. And, of course, the pictures are wonderful, from the coffee-table appropriate cover shot to the many black and white period photos that support the narrative.

Editorial Review:

Summer by the Seaside is a lavishly illustrated work on the origins, evolution, and gradual decline of the resort hotel phenomenon and its architecture along the New England coastline and on its offshore islands. In this indispensable, breakthrough volume, Bryant F. Tolles, Jr., the recognized expert in this popular field, examines the landmark hotels, extant and not, in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. Together these hospitality enterprises helped define the upscale tourist industry and key aspects of New England social, cultural, economic, and architectural history between 1820 and 1950.

Exhaustively researched and beautifully assembled, this stunning and informative volume is the definitive work on the history of travel and tourism in coastal New England during this period.

Excellent Supplement 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Full Disclosure: Cara Goldsbury was my travel agent for one of my (many) Disney trips. My 'regular' agent was unavailable and he recommended Cara as a substitute. My budget was definitely more value than deluxe, but I was impressed with Cara's skill and ability to plan a luxury vacation on a value budget. That isn't the object of this book, the recommendations and tips have a luxury price tag attached, but she does a great job of pointing out certain values when they do exist. If you are only going to buy one guidebook for your Disney trip, this shouldn't be it. Go for the Unofficial Guide or a Passporter (or both!). But if you'd like an excellent supplement to those books, and would like a glimpse into the 5-star opportunities that Walt Disney World has to offer, it is an invaluable guide.

A guide to Walt Disney World for the "sophisticated" traveler 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World doesn't cover all the attractions, resorts and restuarants at WDW, nor does it intend to. Instead, it focuses on the higher-end (expensive) luxurious resorts, restaurants and entertainment at Walt Disney World. The Luxury Guide does a very good job of doing so, and if you're interested in the best of what Disney has to offer in Orlando, I highly recommend this book.

If you're looking for "value" accomodations or how to have a low-budget vacation at WDW, then this guide is not for you.

Good concept-sloppy execution 2 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I recently ordered this book - what a disappointment! This book profiles luxury beach hotels around the world and includes leading hotels in locales such as the Seychelles, Maldives, Oman, Bora Bora and numerous other places. There are two problems however. First, the quality of the pictures is inconsistent - some pictures are good but there are too many that are blurry. Also, many of the pictures are from the hotels themselves. The problem with this is that the pictures can be found on the websites of these hotels already and can be viewed for free. Second, the descriptions of the hotels are poorly written and provide next to no information. I could go on but why bother - Skip this one!

Editorial Review:

Distinguished by masterly architecture and exemplary interior design, the beach hotels introduced in the pages of this lavishly illustrated coffee-table book are the ultimate refuge for those needing respite from their hectic lives and every-day routines. Whether well-established names or hidden gems, the reader is presented with a visual tour of ocean side resorts that range across continents and around the world - luxurious places where tastefulness and simplicity are often valued over richly decorated formality.
