This book was a disappointment to me, rather than being a step by step guide as you travel was more of a read through type book. Obviously good for reference but wouldn't be the only book I used for a trip. Good point of the book is the pictures, bad point is the lack of detailed maps.

Editorial Review:

A guide to all the exuberance, splendor, and absurdity of Route 66, this reference includes details on the magnificent architecture, natural wonders, vintage motels and cafes, unique museums, offbeat attractions, fascinating artifacts and icons, and kitschy tourist traps that dot this famous stretch of road. Painstakingly researched, this resource provides information on how to locate unmarked portions of the old highway; contact information for Route 66 associations and local visitor bureaus; maps and other navigational aids; an index of all Route 66 towns; and anecdotes, trivia, attractions, and suggested side trips. From well-known hotspots to obscure, off-the-beaten-path destinations, this inspiring guide presents a wealth of information for both first-time adventurers and seasoned travelers. Also included is a foreword by David Knudson, Executive Director of the National Historic Route 66 Federation.

We are experienced cruisers. (About 12 times: Alaska, Scandinavia, Russia, Mediterranean, Panama, US Rivers, etc.) Douglass Ward's work always both entertains and helps. Both broad philosophies and specific details for both new and veteran travelers prove on, or very-close to, target.

Shipping and price were both excellent.

Used by 35,000 North American travel agents and considered the "bible of the cruise industry", Berlitz's Complete Guide to Cruising & Cruise Ships 2009 rates 280 ships cruising the world's oceans and waterways.

Editorial Review:

Highway 61 traces approximately 440 miles through Minnesota, from Pigeon Falls at the Canadian border south to La Crescent. Along the way, the road hugs the North Shore, zips through St. Paul, and navigates bluffs along the Mississippi River. While places such as Split Rock Lighthouse or Sugar Loaf Mountain offer well-documented stopping-off points, observant travelers may wonder about historic buildings , abandoned sites, and decaying structures they see along the way.

In this companion book to a new Twin Cities Public Television documentary also called Tales of the Road (airing in November 2008), Cathy Wurzer unearths stories about these places and more as she travels down the road and into the past, spotlighting famous and fascinating locations, many of them little remembered today. Learn about bootleggers crossing the St. Croix by ferry or importing hooch from Canada onboard vessels designed in White Bear Lake. Visualize--or maybe even visit--the quaint tourist cabins, supper clubs, and lodges that served tourists who began motoring up the road in the 1920s. Take stock of historic and current industries: Russ Kendall's Smokehouse in Knife River, a rutabaga plant in Willow River, the pottery factory in Red Wing. Each tale is illustrated with historic and current views to show how much-or how little-Highway 61 has changed. Here's one road trip you won't want to miss!

Cathy Wurzer is host of Morning Edition on Minnesota Public Radio and cohost of Almanac on Twin Cities Public Television. She has been honored with four Emmys for her work on Almanac.

This spring several friends and I had the joy of visiting Paris together and for Christmas, I wanted to give them a book on Paris to remember our trip. Spectacular Paris exceeds my expections. It is a beautiful photographic portrait of this lovely city and will bring back memories of our trip for years to come.

Editorial Review:

Spectacular Paris captures the most magnificent aspects of this city and its people; from the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower, luxurious parks to intimate cafés and markets, residences of Parisian royalty to residences of the royalty of haute couture. An insightful and informative text by William G. Scheller illuminates the more than 200 incomparable photographs of this unparalleled city. With thirty-six pages of panoramic foldouts, this volume amazes even the most native Parisian with fantastic views of all the city’s most idyllic sites. The pages of Spectacular Paris are a stunning visual record of a city that is as fascinating and captivating whether viewed from the heights of the Eiffel Tower or over the shoulder of an artist at work along the Left Bank.

Great Guide 5 out of 5 stars.

We have found the Rick Steves guidebooks to be very helpful in planning a trip.

Decent Resource, Don't rely only on this book though... 2 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book for a recent trip to Germany, while I found it somewhat useful to highlight major things to do along our trip, it was very biased and lacking.

This book is really for a leisurely, 2+ week trip to Germany on a tight budget. If you're looking to go and have fun for a week, look to other books as this one doesn't cover all of the fun places and is somewhat limited in it's depth on the major cities.

I do give him some credit for being known all over Germany, when you walk into a restaurant in a small town, the owner has likely met Rick. But in major cities very nice hotels aren't even listed in the book.

Editorial Review:

Rick Steves’ Germany 2009 offers up the best of Deutschland, from the otherworldly castles of Bavaria to the rowdy beer halls of Munich. Rick covers the must-see sights of Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt, and also includes a healthy dose of little-known destinations in the Black Forest and Mosel Valley. With Rick’s expert advice travelers can save time, money, and avoid the crowds. Float through Munich’s countryside on a party raft, sample wine in the Rhine Valley, or take a wild ride on a luge—it’s all possible with Rick Steves’ as your guide.

The surveyors are 54% women and 46% men. 52% are in their 20s and 30s and 48% are 40 and over. No matter the economic climate, San Francisco's appetite for lively dining destinations continues unabated, inspiring ever bolder ventures. For every notable closing, there's another restaurateur waiting in the wings, often joined by an expensive team of architects and designers, and ZAGAT is always there to note the changes.

A troublesome perspective 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The author tells us his experience while never giving his opinion. At the end, it is very difficult not to have a very sad picture of how our intervention in Irak is going to end. It is easy to read, it is important to read it.

Editorial Review:

In August 2003, at the age of thirty, Rory Stewart took a taxi from Jordan to Baghdad. A Farsi-speaking British diplomat who had recently completed an epic walk from Turkey to Bangladesh, he was soon appointed deputy governor of Amarah and then Nasiriyah, provinces in the remote, impoverished marsh regions of southern Iraq. He spent the next eleven months negotiating hostage releases, holding elections, and splicing together some semblance of an infrastructure for a population of millions teetering on the brink of civil war.

The Prince of the Marshes tells the story of Stewart's year. As a participant he takes us inside the occupation and beyond the Green Zone, introducing us to a colorful cast of Iraqis and revealing the complexity and fragility of a society we struggle to understand. By turns funny and harrowing, moving and incisive, it amounts to a unique portrait of heroism and the tragedy that intervention inevitably courts in the modern age.

Editorial Review:

What’s weird around here? That’s a question Mark Moran and Mark Sceurman have enjoyed asking for years—and their offbeat sense of curiosity led them to create the best-selling phenomenon, Weird N.J.  But why should they stop at New Jersey when there’s so much that’s strange, odd, and utterly nutty all across the U.S.? So they’ve expanded their universe, taken their act on the road, and found stories of weirdness in every state in the nation. The result is a travel guide of sorts, but to the kind of places voyagers will never find on their everyday maps. Instead, it’s chock full of the local legends, crazy characters, cursed roads, abandoned sites, and bizarre roadside attractions. So come along and visit such unique spots as Midgetville, explore long-empty insane asylums, and go through forgotten tunnels—but keep in mind that the maniacal Bunnyman just might be hiding out in one of them. Some of what’s out there is disturbing, some of it's hilarious, but all of it is unforgettably…weird.

Simply the best 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is, hands down, the best guide book on Panama. Terrific detail, excellent maps, accurate and insightful information. Best of all, the author's obvious love for Panama -- quirks included -- comes through on every page.

Simply....The best guidebook on Panama. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This guidebook provides a very balanced & well put together information on the country. The author, being a "zonian" himself (one who grew up in the former Panama Canal Zone) & continues to spend time in the country, has a vast knowledge of the area. From the usual tourist areas to the people, history and culture; from the not so well known areas to do's & dont's, he covers it very well. What I like the most is that - unlike some other guides - he covers whatever is negative in a constructive manner without being overly critical. This latest edition includes a few more color pages at the beginning. A perfect companion to relocation guides like "Living in Panama" & "Choose Panama..." Bottom line...If there's room for only one Panama guidebook...look no further.

Editorial Review:

Writer and Panama native William Friar offers his unique perspective on this up-and-coming destination, from lounging in the Caribbean islands of Bocas del Toro to hiking the highlands of Boquete and exploring Panama City. Friar uses his local knowledge to craft unique trip strategies, such as The 14-day Outdoor Adventure and Six Days for History Buffs. Complete with details for navigating jungle trails, finding cheap taxis and underground bars, or planning a river expedition, Moon Panama gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience.
