Editorial Review:

MICHELIN Guide New York City 2009 helps those eating in the Big Apple solve the New York City culinary paradox of corner diners and exquisite star-rated restaurants. Covering 565 recommended restaurants for all budgets and cuisines including 100 new listings this year the 2009 Red Guide is the ideal resource for both locals and visitors looking for that perfect spot. All establishments covered in the guide are recommended by Michelin s expert inspectors, so you can book reservations to any listing with confidence; you don t have to wade through confusing or mediocre reviews to try to determine which place is worth your time and money.

The MICHELIN Guide New York City follows a proven formula that has withstood the test of time. Michelin employs full-time local professional inspectors that work anonymously so they are treated the same as other diners. Michelin inspectors check back on previously reviewed establishments and the guide s content is updated accordingly. Starred restaurants are inspected several times a year. Since few culinary honors are as prestigious as a Michelin star rating, restaurants that earn them are sure to consistently offer a superior dining experience so they retain their star rating from year to year.

The guide describes ambience and cuisine for all entries, while restaurants that merit a Michelin star rating will also have a menu selection and color photos. For those with less than a three-star budget, a Bib Gourmand category includes the inspectors favorite places to eat for under $40; that s about 80 restaurants in this year s guide.

In addition to top restaurants, the MICHELIN Red Guide also reviews places to stay, from budget to deluxe. The 2009 Guide features approximately 60 hotels, each held to the same high standards that have made Michelin famous for over a hundred years.

Features:
Expert reviews of 565 restaurants across the five boroughs and 60 Manhattan hotels to suit every budget.
Anonymous, professional local inspectors recommend each establishment.
New color map format makes finding the location you need easier than ever.
Star-rated restaurants feature both menu highlights and full-color photos.
Neighborhood and regional overviews illuminate local history and culinary traditions.
Detailed descriptions of each listing provide the reader with a picture of everything from the ambience to the cuisine.
The Bib Gourmand category indicates the inspectors favorite restaurants for good value.

Old China Hand Says This Book is Most Helpful 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Most of the reviews for this book are raves, which it deserves.
The last review, however, mysteriously pans it as a false picture of China. As an old China hand, who still visits China every year, I'm afraid the one negative review is due to the fact that this person only went to Beijing during the Olympics. Not only is Beijing not typical of most of the rest of China, with the most orderly traffic, for instance, but Beijing was really "sanitized" for the Olympics.
Traffic was limited, hundreds of thousands of migrant workers were forced to return to their hometowns for the interim, and most Beijingers stayed away due to the giant influx of foreigners. This person hardly saw the "real China".
In any case, I'd highly recommend this book to anyone traveling to China, particularly independent, adventurous ones.

Editorial Review:

Behinds the Scenes! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is my first review in Amazon.

I am always curious about how things are made,
and after watching many episodes of "How do they do it",
and "How it's made" on discovery Channel.
I started to look for extra resources for a better understanding on these "behind the scenes" mysteries.
Then, I found this book.
And this book is a real treasure!
The book is well organized,
It provides many detail information about the factory tours,
and the brief background of the companies.

Thanks to this book,
now I have some itineraries in mind.
I plan to visit KitchenAid's factory in the near future for my mom.
(My family is in Taiwan)
She is a big fan of KitchenAid mixer. ha.
I will also visit Airstream company as well,
Owning a travel trailer is my dream, and I want to know how it is made,
And I will be more determined to realize this dream!
Maybe one day I will write a similar book "Watch it made in Taiwan" in a mobile trailer office. Who knows?!

Another great book in the series. 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

Masterfully photographed, and printed on high quality paper, this book is a must have for any armchair traveller.
The book provides a map of the region on the inside cover, and then follows a brief and informative historical overview, which introduces the region to the reader. From that point onwards the book consists of one splendid photograph after the other, very often on a full page, or even spread over double pages, all with short descriptions to accompany them. The book depicts rural country scenes as well as historical landmarks, grand vistas to great architectural photos and even prominent statues. In short, everything the region has to offer.
I am also the proud owner of New England (Photographic Tour) by the same author and photographer and as such, I can highly recommend any one of the books in this series.

A Beautiful Country......A Beautiful Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book as a gift and was so impressed I had to buy one for myself! Photography which captures the distinct and rare beauty of Ireland and well-written text that describes and explains the many points of interest found in Ireland. If you've never been to Ireland this book will make you plan a holiday. If Ireland is already a favourite place to visit reading this book will make you want to return. High quality binding.

Editorial Review:

Ireland is a spectacular new addition to the series, with warm words and gorgeous photographs that perfectly capture the Emerald Isle's unique spirit.

A great book for insight on multi-layered cultures of Delhi 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was born and brought up in Delhi, and lived there for 21 years of my life, after which I emigrated to the United States. This book made me feel that how oblivious many of us 'locals' are, of the many riches and insights that my home city has to offer.

William Dalrymple peels the multilayered culture of the historical city of Delhi - seven times the capital of empires - ruined and rebuilt again. He spans from the Punjabi immigrants that've filled the newer parts of economically booming Delhi sice the partition of India in 1947; to the more historic but now decrepit old Delhi - where the legendary age old 'Persian' customs such as the 'Kabootar' (Pegion) fights, the 'Chor' (Thief) Bazaars and the mysterious 'Hakims' (Doctors practicing an old school of medicine) are unquestioned parts of the daily lives of many. Dalrymple also describes the curious and unique collision of history leading to the current day fate of the Indian Hijras (Eunuchs), who ring the door bells of apartments of Delhi's denizens, in the old city and the new, on any kind of festivity. He describes the fascinating history and architecture of the tomb of Himayun and Hazrat Nizam-ud-din, the charming old 'Quawaalis' (musical forums) still alive there, and many other monuments that I visited umpteen times as a kid, the 'Sadhus', an ancient culture intact with flavors... the list is endless. Somehow, I missed making the connections, and could see the beauty of the entire kaliedoscope when I read this book. I find my visits to Delhi so much more fascinating. One thing that the readers must be made aware though is the overt focus on history of Mughal (Persian) Delhi - which is for a reason - that all the pre-Mughal monuments were destroyed. The Delhi that exists is newer than the spirit of the city really is.

Since I read this book I always try to find such books on the cities I've visited. A strong recommend for anyone visiting Delhi -- you can choose to be put off by the seeming boorishness of the existing 'New' Delhi, or scratch beneath the surface and discover magic!

Editorial Review:

As Dalrymple's first book, "In Xanadu", traversed thousands of miles, now he traverses thousands of years. In the course of 12 months in Delhi, he peels back the successive encrusting layers of history, using both material and human remains of each of the eight cities of Delhi, interlacing innumerable stories with the present and ending with the Delhi creation myth contained in the great Indian epic "The Mahabharata".

Frommer's Japan 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

It is difficult to get really good uptodate travel books about countries in the far east. This book is good but not excellant. Just too many changes taking place especailly in countries like Japan. We found we could rely on information and data about historical landmarks and areas. Hotel and restaurant iformation changes so quickly you may be better off going to the internet.

Frommer's does it again 5 out of 5 stars.

I have trusted Frommer's for years. I have never been steered wrong by any of heir publications in over 30 years. This Japan volume continuues in that tradition.

Excellent and helpful information. Only down side is that Okinawa is not included in the information.

Useful 3 out of 5 stars.

We just got back from Japan & used this guide to supplement info gathered on the internet. It is a useful guide but our biggest gripe: The book should have the Japanese characters right next to the name of the city, restaurant, etc. What a pain it was flipping to the back of the book to find these! You're tired/hungry & not really familiar w/the characters so you're flipping to look at the directions to find the place & trying to decipher the sign outside the door. Really annoying & could be done so simply. Also it would have helped when we were watching the Japanese news (which is all in Japanese) to catch the weather for the day. The news show the cities in the Kanji characters but the city names are not in Kanji in the guidebook. GRRRR

I agree w/another reviewer that some areas of Tokyo get short shrift in this guide - Ueno is just one example. If you are traveling to more areas than just Tokyo you would buy the Japan guide (this book) but we really didn't want & shouldn't have to carry the Tokyo guide too - it should all be in one book. Besides, a lot of the info in the Tokyo guide is a repeat of the basic info on visiting Japan.

I don't like how this book is organized - all the restaurants, hotels for the whole city in one section. It would be much more useful to take each part of the city & give all the info in its own section. When I'm in Ginza looking for a restaurant I don't want to see all the restaurants listed for every part of town. Tokyo is so huge that you may be concentrating on one part of town in a day & we found it annoying to have to flip around, refer to the index, etc. to find info. Another way to organize it would be as DK Eyewitness does with an index of restaurants/hotels in the back - easier to find.

The best maps are at the Tourist Info Centers. I would recommend that be your first stop at the Narita airport. Also, print out your own Kanji for city names before you leave home. You can find them on the internet.

Editorial Review:

From Tokyo city sights and Mt. Fuji to fascinating temples and shrines, markets, and museums, Frommer's brings Japan to today's traveler. You'll get information on customs, etiquette, cuisine, and the arts as well as tips for saving money and business travel.

Great guide... choose this over Streetwise 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent map for getting to know London, as it says in many of the other reviews. The main reason I'm writing is that I was on the fence between getting this guide or the Streetwise maps for a recent trip. I ended up getting this mapguide for London and the one for Paris, but we used Streetwise for Barcelona, and I definitely found that the map books are far superior.
The books show a level of detail that Streetwise can't match. We walked all over London and never found so much as an alley that wasn't on the map, whereas it was often hard to locate streets on the Barcelona map (I realize this may reflect a difference in the cities, but no one ever called London an easily navigable grid). Also, this mapguide can be folded and put in a front pocket, and it's small enough that you can read it on the street without looking like the quintessential tourist. You pretty much have to unfold the whole Streetwise any time you want to use it and since it's laminated it can't really fit in your pocket.
I can see where some people had problems switching between pages on the maps, but I found this pretty easy - it definitely helps to spend a little time studying the overall city map in the book before setting out. This mapbook does have a small London guide section and we actually found some good recommendations in it, but it won't replace a full size guide book for planning a trip.
All in all I loved using this mapguide, and I still look fondly at the dogeared copy I brought back. It's not that Streetwise maps are horrible, but if you have the choice, I'd bring the book.

Editorial Review:

Newly revised and updated, this convenient guide is the essential companion for visitors to London in the new century. Featuring colorful, informative, easy-to-handle maps that require no unfolding, the guide gives a comprehensive overview of what to see and do in and around England's capital city.

Updated with information on all special millennium events, including a section on the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, and new developments such as Barkside
Includes special features on Wren's London, Docklands, Hampstead Heath, and the British Museum
Has everything you'll need to know about London museums, theaters, markets, jazz clubs and cabarets, parks, river and canal trips, tourist information centers, and selected restaurants, cafes, and pubs
Lightweight and pocket-sized, with a complete street index-perfect for on-the-go travelers.

Don't RV without it. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a very detailed book that gives a very good sense for the various campgrounds in Alaska. It provides phone numbers for most places, and we were able to call ahead to check availability and if the wash facilities were available and to check hours of operation. GPS locations are also given for each campground. It also lists some points of interest around the area of the campgrounds. This along with The Milepost were invaluable.

Editorial Review:

Detailed routes and advice for heading into the wilds of Alaska and northwestern Canada are provided in this guide for RV and tent campers. This grand tour of Alaska covers in detail the Alaskan Highway, routes throughout the Yukon and Alaskan outback, and the ferry system in southeastern Alaska. Campgrounds throughout the region are listed with pictures, descriptions of amenities, meticulous maps, and contact information for each; campgrounds suitable for large RVs are also identified. Along with important details for a safe trip—such as border crossings, budget planning, vehicle preparation or renting an RV, appropriate clothing, road conditions, and possible wildlife encounters—recreational information on hiking, mountain biking, boating, rafting, kayaking, and viewing wildlife is provided for each destination.

A Good Travel Resource But Not Much Changed From The First Edition 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I wrote an extremely positive review for Doug Lansky's first edition of "First Time Around The World" because I found it to be an excellent resource for travellers planning a RTW trip. Like the earlier book, this one includes useful chapters on planning, packing, safety and health for those preparing for long term international travel, particularly backpackers and others on a tight budget.

However, I personally was a bit disappointed with this second edition because there didn't seem to be enough new material to justify my purchase. Also I noticed some faults to the book that I didn't recognize the first time. For example, the country profiles are way too short and lacking enough useful information to help readers determine which places would be the most interesting to visit. Also some of the pricing info in this section seems to be misleading. It states, for example, that Thailand falls into the mid-range category for prices, costing from $35-$50 daily. But then I later noticed that Costa Rica is listed as costing only $10-$25 a day. Most experienced travellers would agree that travelling in Costa Rica on $10 a day is not a very realistic budget and that it is, in fact, a more expensive destination than Thailand. So I would caution readers to not rely too much on this book for pricing information while planning a trip.

This is probably still worth buying for those that don't own the first edition. But if and when a third edition is published I hope some substantial improvements are made.
