Editorial Review:

What is it about Italy that inspires passion, fascination, and utter devotion? This quirky guide to the Italian way of life, with its fifty witty mini-essays on iconic Italian subjects, will answer that question as well as entertain and delight both real and armchair travelers. Topics range from expressive hand gestures to patron saints, pasta, parmesan, shoes, opera, the Vespa, the Fiat 500, gelato, gondolas, and more. History, folklore, superstitions, traditions, and customs are tossed in a delicious sauce that also includes a wealth of factual information for the sophisticated traveler:• why lines, as we know them, are nonexistent in Italy• why a string of coral beads is often seen around a baby’s wrist• what the unlucky number of Italy is (it’s not thirteen, unless seating guests at a table, when it IS thirteen–taking into account the outcome of the Last Supper)• why red underwear begins to appear in shops as the New Year approaches In addition to the lyrical and poetic, Italianissimo provides useful and indispensable information for the traveler: deciphering the quirks of the language (while English has only one word for “you,” in Italy there are three), the best place to find balsamic vinegar (in Modena, of course), the best gelato (in Sicily, where they first invented it using the snow from Mount Etna). There are also recommendations for little-known museums and destinations (the Bodoni museum, the Pinocchio park, legendary coffee bars). This is a new kind of guidebook overflowing with enlightening and hilarious miscellaneous information, filled with luscious graphics and unforgettable photographs that will decode and enrich all trips to Italy–both real and imaginary.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you only read one, read this one. I have been out of motorcycling for 26 years, owned four in my earlier day. I wanted to tour then but never did. This time I am doing it. I wanted to start out right so this was the first book I read. Extremely informative. It covered just about everything I needed and more. If there is any negative maybe I could ask for more guidance on which motorcycle. However, as I found in researching motorcycles, there are just too many factors. You must know what kind of travel you'll do, set your requirements of the bike, do the research on the bikes, sit on all of them, ride if allowed, settle on the one for you, take a motorcycle saftey course, buy and have fun. Don't go too small or too big, it must fit you. Dr. Fraizer's book is good too.

Editorial Review:

This book is written to help motorcyclists prepare themselves and their motorcycles for traveling long distances over extended periods. Whether you are getting ready for a weekend trip beyond your home turf or for a transcontinental odyssey lasting several years, Coyner's book details the fundamentals for riding in comfort, safety, and convenience. In three major sections, the book covers trip planning, rider preparation, and outfitting the motorcycle. An appropriate level of planning for a long motorcycle trip can help maximize enjoyment and minimize irritating annoyances on the road. Coyner lays out the steps for planning a worry-free, fun trip. Over 250 full-color photographs illustrate riding gear, accessories, and modifications that will make any motorcycle adventure the trip of a lifetime.

A great guide with only one flaw. 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

My buddy and I just got back from our trip to the U.K. We used this book almost exclusively and it was a huge help in planning our time. The only flaw is that there is very little info on the eastern portion of the big Island from lower Scotland to Cambridge.

The reason for this omission is clear. There's not much to see in north east England. The problem is that a drive from Edinburg to Cambridge is stretching the limits of time spent in a car, in a foreign country, on the wrong side of the road. This omission left us to our own devices for one night's stay and it wasn't very much fun looking for lodging after eight.

Other than that the book was great. We went through lower left England then up through Whales and Scotland then back down to all the major schools and cities on the lower right. Through everything, Rick Steves got us where we wanted to go and helped us find good food and accomodations.

I'm happy to report that we saw everything we'd hoped to see and discovered quite a few other amazing locations using this book. I'd reccomend it to anyone who is planning a trip to the U.K.

One quick tip. Give yourself plenty of time to read this thing before you go and make reservations for where you'd like to stay the first and last night of your trip. In the middle Rick Steve gives you plenty of good advice about where to stay and what to see and do. Good book, great trip. Happy travels!

Editorial Review:

Take a walk through Shakespeare’s hometown, explore the rugged and remote Isle of Skye, or enjoy the hip nightlife in Glasgow—it’s all possible with Rick Steves’ Great Britain 2009. Rick guides travelers through the best of this remarkable and diverse region, from the must-see sights of London to the quant villages of the Scottish Highlands. Rick offers expert advice, historical knowledge, and a healthy dose of humor, allowing travelers to experience all that Great Britain has to offer—economically and hassle-free.

Best guide for outside the major cities 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I just got back from a 2-week trip to Spain where we covered about 1000 miles by car. This was the guide that we depended on when we traveled through the Pyrenees, Rioja and Basque regions. The other guidebooks have maybe one or two sentences on the picturesque little medieval towns that we passed through, where this one had recommendations for meals and places to stay off the beaten path. I was so glad to have this book or we would have missed out on many great experiences, including our stays at some small "casas rurales" (like bed and breakfasts) where we got to really speak to the locals and take in the day to day life in Spain. It's a big book to drag around, so I ended up tearing out the pages with the maps we would need each day and carried those around with me instead of the whole book. The best travel book purchase that I have ever made!

Editorial Review:

The Rough Guide to Spain is your definitive handbook to one of Europe’s most thrilling countries. From the mesmerizing Moorish monuments of Andalucia to Guadi’s spectacular masterpieces in Catalunya, the 36-page full-colour section introduces all of the country’s highlights. The guide includes detailed listings for all the top places to stay, eat and drink whatever your budget, plus the brand-new ‘Authors’ Pick’ feature will highlight the very best options. There is plenty of practical advice on a host of outdoor activities, from windsurfing in Tarfifa to walking the Camino de Santiago. The guide takes an informed look at Spain’s history, architecture and many fiestas and comes complete with maps and plans for every region.

The Rough Guide to Spain is like having a local friend plan your trip.

Exactly what I needed. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was exactly what I needed. It contains all the information I needed. A great learning tool. The part of the book I am most impressed with is the section of infant nutrition. It explains month by month what you can feed your infant. An example is the 4th month of life, you can start your child on iron enriched cereals.

Editorial Review:

Updated and revised to address current concerns about nutrition throughout the life cycle, Nutrition for Foodservice and Culinary Professionals, Seventh Edition successfully covers core nutritional topics such as carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, and dietary needs from a culinary perspective. Bursting with a full-color design and plenty of photographs and illustrations, Drummond and Brefere link nutritional concepts with healthy cooking techniques and recipes. Each book comes with a nutritional software CD-ROM that enables readers to create recipes, modify recipes, and analyze the nutritional content of recipes. Chefs, restaurateurs, dieticians, and other foodservice professionals will find this book an invaluable reference and guide to meeting the nutritional needs of all their customers.

Fun, funky folklore... 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Weird NJ is a fun, funky book of legends and folklore about the Garden State. Written by Mark Sceurman and Mark Moran, it started as a journal, evolved into a magazine and has now morphed into a popular book (in New Jersey, anyway).

Most readers have heard about the Jersey Devil and UFO's. But Weird NJ goes way beyond these "mainstream" oddities. The stories in Weird NJ were gathered over ten years. The authors claim that they like to "churn up the historical muck" and that "when the line between history and legend begins to blur is the tightrope we like to tread." Many of the stories came from readers, and it is to them this book is dedicated.

The authors take us on quite a journey. We would expect monsters, ghosts and haunted houses. But Sceurman and Moran bring us even further. The chapters are broken down into such topics as Ancient Mysteries, Unexplained Phenomena, Local Heroes and Villains, Cemetery Safari, Roadside Oddities, Roads Less Traveled and Abandoned NJ (to name just some of them). Most of the stories also include pictures and drawings. We see a Stone Living Room and a house shaped like a cookie jar. The authors try to find the fabled midget village and tribes of albinos. We see a mystery lake in the Pine Barrens called the Blue Hole, and the Gates of Hell in Clifton. There is just so much here to keep you entertained.

My only complaint about Weird NJ is that most of the stories take place in North Jersey (South Jersey gets slighted once again). Also, I felt the authors could have done a little more to separate fact from fiction in some instances. But despite these minor flaws, I plan on giving a number of these books for Christmas this year. I know that they'll be a big hit.

Editorial Review:

Oh sure, Texas is bigger and California is cooler, but for sheer, out-and-out weirdness, no state even comes close to New Jersey. You probably know of the infamous Jersey Devil, but have you heard of the Matawan Man Eater or the Hoboken Monkey-Man? Maybe you'd like to cruise down haunted Annie's Road in Totowa, or take a stroll through Vineland's bizarre Palace of Depression? These are just some of the offbeat and odd, the mysterious and unexplainable, the spooky sights and local legends that don't appear on any tourist map. You'll only find them here, along with an amazing assortment of roadside oddities, abandoned asylums, natural phenomena and unforgettable people along the highways and byways of the Garden State. From Caldwell's Mystery Thread and the Dancing Jesus of Whippoorwill Road to the campaign to save Middletown's Evil Clown, you'll laugh, gasp and marvel at the everyday weirdness that is New Jersey.

A Disappointment. 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Having just returned from a week in Guatemala, I bought this book because it packed a lot of information into its pages and seemed to cover all the bases, and then some. However, I found the information in the Moon guide to Guatemala surprisingly thin or just plain inaccurate with respect to what one really needs to know about a place. For example, Moon's advice on Antigua is unhelpful or outdated: the tourist office is located elsewhere; the restaurants deserve better descriptions; and the best shops are given short-shrift. Additionally, it doesn't deliver the good regarding practical information on excursions. For example, with respect to climbing the Pacaya volcano, it would have been nice to know all the ins-and-outs on entrance fees, recommended stuff to take to the top (don't forget those marshmallows!), and just how long the whole trips takes start to finish. I sometimes got the impression that the author was relying on second-hand accounts for his information on these places.

Editorial Review:

Part-time Guatemala resident Alvaro Argueta provides travelers with an insider's view of Guatemala's rich ecological gems, including idyllic surfspots and popular volcanoes. Argueta is the perfect tour guide — providing trip ideas like Highland Adventure and Exploring the Maya Past and Present. Packed with information on dining, transportation, and accommodations, Moon Guatemala has lots of options for a range of travel budgets. Every Moon guidebook includes recommendations for must-see sights and many area, regional, and city-centered maps. Including experienced advice on visiting Lake Atitlan, La Antigua, and the variety of museums in Guatemala City, Moon Guatemala gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience. With expert writers, first-rate strategic advice, and an essential dose of humor, Moon guidebooks are the cure for the common trip.
