Another great book in the series. 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

Masterfully photographed, and printed on high quality paper, this book is a must have for any armchair traveller.
The book provides a map of the region on the inside cover, and then follows a brief and informative historical overview, which introduces the region to the reader. From that point onwards the book consists of one splendid photograph after the other, very often on a full page, or even spread over double pages, all with short descriptions to accompany them. The book depicts rural country scenes as well as historical landmarks, grand vistas to great architectural photos and even prominent statues. In short, everything the region has to offer.
I am also the proud owner of New England (Photographic Tour) by the same author and photographer and as such, I can highly recommend any one of the books in this series.

A Beautiful Country......A Beautiful Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book as a gift and was so impressed I had to buy one for myself! Photography which captures the distinct and rare beauty of Ireland and well-written text that describes and explains the many points of interest found in Ireland. If you've never been to Ireland this book will make you plan a holiday. If Ireland is already a favourite place to visit reading this book will make you want to return. High quality binding.

Editorial Review:

Ireland is a spectacular new addition to the series, with warm words and gorgeous photographs that perfectly capture the Emerald Isle's unique spirit.

Editorial Review:

Tourists, nature lovers, and even armchair travelers will discover hours of pleasurable reading in this huge compendium of world-famous sites. They’ll also find a wealth of ideas for their next vacation trip. It’s a guide to the most spectacular natural sites—and sights— around the world, from the magnificent Angel Falls in the Venezuelan rain forest to the fiery volcanic Mediterranean island of Stromboli, off the coast of Sicily. Other natural wonders include Glacier Bay, and Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska; Death Valley and Yosemite Park, California; the Rhine Valley in Germany; Mount Blanc in France; Mount Olympus in Greece; Mount Fuji in Japan; Easter Island; and for divers, spectacular places like the Mariana Trench in the Pacific. Here is a virtual circumnavigation of the globe, with each natural wonder, chosen for its grandeur and sheer beauty. Each location is profiled with a color photo, a description of its origin and present-day features, a thumbnail-size locator map, and a succinct table of statistics. For instance, this volume describes—
  • Ayers Rock, the 500-mile-circumference sandstone elevation that rises out of the flat central Australian Outback and is believed to be a holy place by Australia’s Aborigines
  • Bryce Canyon, Utah, a rugged, dramatic national park located just a few hours’ drive from Salt Lake City
  • Iguazu Falls, an extensive series of 275 waterfalls on the Brazil-Argentina border, described by one naturalist as an ocean pouring into an abyss
Here are breathtaking locations on every continent—sites so spectacular that once seen they are never forgotten. Hundreds of full-color photos.

Signs are funny 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am overweight and uni-languagal (not even a word), just like the rest of us americans. Therefore, I find books like "Signspotting 2" hilarious. I mean, "Be Aware of Invisibility"? That's great stuff. Not only is it incorrect English, but it gives you the idea that, "Hey, maybe in some country somewhere I can become invisible." My 14-year-old daughter and I read this book and the first Signspotting book together and laughed until our heads hurt. It was great bonding stuff for an overworked mom and her "I'm always right" teenage daughter. I recommend it highly.

A sequel to the highly successful One Hundred and One Beautiful Small Towns in Italy, this book expands the series to include the most enchanting hamlets of France. Gorgeously illustrated as well as informative, One Hundred and One Beautiful Small Towns of France is a journey through the French countryside, a place where the pace slows, locals engage strangers in conversation, and every town has a unique story to tell. Travel between the hilltop towns of the Central Massif and the Pyrenees to rockbound coastal fishing villages in Normandy and Brittany. Breathtaking full-color photographs create the perfect atmosphere as you discover these unexplored places, and descriptive sidebars offer invaluable information on local curiosities to indulge, unique artisanal products to buy, and age-old culinary specialties to sample. A detailed appendix is the perfect source on where to shop, sightsee, and dine—avec plaisir! Whether you are an armchair traveler or a Francophile planning another trip, this volume is the guide to the hidden treasures of France that proves once and for all that the heart of this popular travel destination lies in the countryside far from the grandeur and pomp of Paris.

A must have for nostalgia buffs! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As a person who grew up in a "recent" era, most of the places listed here were before my time. However, the nostalgia of these long forgotten places lives on in this book. Anyone who's driven down Route 66 has no doubt passed some of these places never really giving that crumbling building on the side of the road much thought. This book gives those crumbling buildings a history for those of us who weren't around during their hayday. I've bought 3 of these books, one for myself, and two for gifts. They've been a huge hits.

    Editorial Review:

Now Russell Olsen’s best-selling collections featuring Route 66 filling stations, main streets, motor courts, cafés, campgrounds, honky-tonks, truck stops, and barbecue joints as they appeared both in their heyday and today is available in one package.

For more than 30 years, Route 66 was America’s main east-west artery, pointing the nation toward all the promise that California represented. To serve these travelers, Route 66 boasted bustling commercial hubs, many of which remain today, many more of which crumbled long ago. All of the sites included here—150 in all—are shown both during their mid-century heydays and as they appear today. Taken together, the marvelous visual and descriptive elements assembled here—period postcards and imagery, specially commissioned maps, and Olsen’s own photography and capsule histories of the sites featured—comprise a unique, state-by-state look back at America’s Main Street.

Sharp, interesting photos 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This volume bests many other photographic books about Brooklyn because the book format is large and "landscape" shape (the photos measuring 10 x 6.75" inches), the individual photos are sharp (where other books too often have muddy reproduction), the subject matter is interesting, and the captions accurate. I think I know my Brooklyn, as I have explored it for sixty years. I have not yet found an error in the text. Because the author usually positions the camera in the "now" scene close to where it was in the "then" scene, the photos are exceptionally interesting. For instance, page 86 shows the Hanover Club, Bedford and Rodney Street, in 1893. The "now" photo shows it as a yeshiva, with the details of the pedestrian, the "Don't walk" signs, and yellow school bus. A "circa 1908" photo of Times Plaza shows the same Interborough head building (then a fare collection area) that I walked past last month. The author earns extra stars for including people in most photos. This book is far more than a book of Brooklyn buildings. The streets are alive!

Stunning photography; capsule travel descriptions of every country in Europe 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Lonely Planet's newest hardbook travel book is ideal not only for travelers who dream of Europe's most famous sights but also those who seek more under-the-traveler-radar adventures beyond the typical tourist stomping grounds. In addition to a general overview of the geography, history, and "great journeys" of Europe, the book is organized into the following geographical chapters:

    1. British Isles & The Low Countries

    2. Western Mediterranean

    3. Central Europe

    4. Eastern Mediterranean & The Balkans

    5. The Black Sea & Caucasus

    6. Scandinavian & Baltic Europe

Jampacked with gorgeous photos, The Europe Book highlights each country's most memorable features including history, people, legends, landscape, and major traditions. As a travel consultant and tour guide, I found the "Essential Experiences" sidebars especially interesting. Put this book on your coffee table and your guests will enjoy the superb photography and feast on the cultural smorgasbord that is Europe.

    Editorial Review:

Following in the theme of the bestselling "The Travel Book" comes "The Europe Book," a focused celebration of the world's most culturally influential continent. It explores Europe in detail, and includes an evocative and in-depth look at each country. Full of arresting images and maps, this comprehensive coffee table book can also considered as an indispensable reference title.Lonely Planet

    Editorial Review:

Certain symbols abound in modern Western culture that are instantly recognizable: the cross signifies Christianity, the six-pointed Star of David is revered by Jews, the golden arches frequently means it's time for lunch. Other symbols, however, require a bit of decoding-particularly those found in cemeteries.

Cemeteries are virtual encyclopedias of symbolism. Engravings on tombstones, mausoleums and memorials tell us just about everything there is to know about a person- date of birth and death as well as religion, ethnicity, occupation, community interests, and much more. In the fascinating new book Stories in Stone: The Complete Guide to Cemetery Symbolism by noted author Douglas Keister, the secrets of cemetery symbolism are finally revealed. For instance, did you know that it is quite rare to see a sunflower on a tombstone? Did you know that the human foot symbolizes humility and service since it consistently touches the earth? Or the humble sheaf of wheat-while it is often used to denote someone who has lived a long and fruitful life, do you know other meanings it might carry?

Stories in Stone provides history along with images of a wide variety of common and not-so-common cemetery symbols, and offers an in-depth examination of stone relics and the personal and intimate details they display-flora and fauna, religious icons, society symbols, and final impressions of how the deceased wished to be remembered. Douglas Keister has created a practical field guide that is compact and portable, perfect for those interested in family histories and genealogical research, and is the only book of its kind that unlocks the language of symbols in a comprehensive and easy-to-understand manner.

Douglas Keister has photographed fourteen award-winning, critically acclaimed books (including Red Tile Style: America's Spanish Revival Architecture, The Bungalow: America's Arts & Crafts Home, and Storybook Style: America's Whimsical Homes of the Twenties) earning him the title "America's most noted photographer of historic architecture." He also writes and illustrates magazine articles and contributes photographs and essays to other books, calendars, posters, and greeting cards. Doug lives in Chico, California, and travels frequently to photograph and lecture on historic architecture and photography.

Ah Paris city of my dreams! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This Paris 2009 Calendar is such a good visual trip through the streets of Paris. The photographs are so crystal clear and pretty you feel like you're actually there. Lovely, lovely photographs especially the January one with all the trees in front of the Eiffel Tower. I had no idea it had a park with all these trees in front of it. Every time I see the Eiffel Tower in the news all I see are young kids skateboarding in front of it. What a pleasnt surprise to know the Eiffel Tower has a tree lined park beside it too. GraphiquedFrance does itself proud with these Paris photographs. Thanks Amazon.
