Editorial Review:

California's picturesque villages and small towns and its stunning landscape, from rugged sierras and fog-laced headlands to golden sand beaches and rolling oak-studded ranchland.

California is nicknamed "The Golden State," and though the name applies literally to the color of its state flower, the golden poppy, it is also a metaphor for the hopes and dreams that have lured generations of settlers. There are villages that grew up around the famed Spanish mission trail, and communities that boomed because of Gold Rush fever. There are places whose natural beauty nurtured artists and writers, and fertile valleys that were home to vintners and cattlemen.

The state is known for reinventing itself, yet a surprising number of its towns and villages still offer charming glimpses into its history and heritage. Their architecture may be quaint, historic, or gracious and their physical settings may take the breath away, but they are also vital communities, prized for their small-town values, their lifestyle, food, and wine. This book showcases the most beautiful villages and towns of California in Nik Wheeler's stunning photography and Joan Tapper's perceptive commentaries. These evoke not just historic houses, but also streetscapes, parks, and physical surroundings.

The book is divided into four regions: Northern California Coast, Northern California Mountains and Valleys, Central and Southern California Coast, and Central and Southern California Mountains and Valleys. In addition, there are photographic essays on the wine country, missions, and ghost towns, plus essential information for tourists on places to stay and to eat. 323 color photographs.

Editorial Review:

A sequel to the highly successful One Hundred & One Beautiful Small Towns in Italy and One Hundred & One Beautiful Small Towns in France, this book is a unique photographic tour of the most beautiful towns in every region of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. The towns of Britain’s countryside are among the most charming and unchanged in Europe’s history. Readers will want to roam the countryside: from the Norman castle towns of the southeast to the spectacular Roman architecture of Bath and St. Albans, and from Celtic cottage farms in the Scottish lowlands to the stone and iron towns of the Welsh borders and the north, One Hundred & One Beautiful Small Towns in Great Britain is as much about the history of the Isles as it is about their beauty today. Tom Aiken’s eloquent and informative text not only draws attention to aesthetic, natural, and architectural points of interest in every region, but also brings to life the history of each place, from Shakespeare’s Stratford-on-Avon to the royal Cowes, the monastic abbeys of Yorkshire to prehistoric Ireland, and from the Pagan past of the Scottish Highlands to the legends of Roman Britain. A thorough appendix provides travel tips and details and locations for hotels, restaurants, and shops of interest in all the towns. Whether you’re an armchair traveler or an Anglo-phile planning yet another trip, this volume is the guide to the varied heritage and hidden treasures of Britain.

Plenty of room to write 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'm always looking for a wall calendar with plenty of space for me to write: doctor appointments, school events, piano lessons, and so on. (Some calendars put so many international holidays, there's no room left to write anything.) This is my third or fourth year using calendars by David Muench and Marc Muench. There's plenty of room to write my appointments, and the photos are spectacular!

A good backstop to any trip to Boston's sites 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

We purchased this book in Boston and found almost all of the sites we saw in town in this book. In this book, the older, up to 150-year old photo of the original structures on the current site, or older pictures than offered a juxtaposition of the surrounding landscape of buildings present in the past and now around selected sites.

While I was a little disappointed in no picture of Fenway Park, or in a map to help locate where some of these pictures were taken in the city (after all, I'm not a native of Boston), I found the book to very ably support the exhibits we saw on Boston's history, and add greatly to my understanding of the city and the growth of urbanism in general. The architecture depicted is often unique, and the descriptions offer a bit of information on who the architects were, how the areas shown were constructed, and more.

Overall, I came out pretty pleased by what is found in this book.

Editorial Review:

America's oldest major city, Boston has adapted to the modern age while still retaining an old-world charm. With many of her streets tracing original ox-cart paths to historic waterfronts, Boston is "America's Walking City." This volume documents the amazing changes that Boston has undergone during the last 150 years. Seventy modern color photographs are compared side-by-side with seventy archival photographs from the 1850s to the 1950s. While focusing on famous vistas and familiar landmarks, it also explores well-known neighborhoods. The Then and Now series includes: New York, Washington, Boston, and San Francisco.

Other highlights include an elegant auberge in Napa Valley, California where you can stay during your wine tasting tour, a historic ranch nestled in a Death Valley oasis, an adobe hotel in the Chilean desert, a hotel built entirely of salt in Bolivia's Uyuni salt desert, and an "ecolodge" on a natural reserve in the Amazon rain forest. Just flip through the pages of this new compilation of dreamy spots to plan your next holiday, wherever on the planet it may be.

Editorial Review:

From the terra cotta and ocher of the Ionian Islands to the brilliant blue and white of the Aegean, the beautiful villages of Greece and its islands are incomparable. The variety of village life and building springs from a multitude of histories and influences, yet these towns are all, in their separate ways, quintessentially Greek. Here, then, are the loveliest villages created by the indomitable Greek spirit, all set in a landscape of overwhelming magnificence. We begin with the mountains of the mainland and areas such as the Pelion peninsula, where stone walls and wood-framed balconies betray a Turkish influence. In the southern Peloponnese are the Maniot villages and their characteristic tower houses, built by warring families the better to pursue their vendettas. From north to south through the mainland and the Peloponnese, from west to east through the islands, the mixture of intimacy and grandeur continues. The Ionian Islands are home to belfried churches, pitched tile roofs, porticoes, and colonnades, reflecting years of Venetian rule. The flat-roofed white houses of the Cyclades, startling against the blue Aegean sea, seem to express the very essence of Greece. Other villages mirror an international trading and shipping tradition, such as Chios whose substantial country mansions were left by the Genoese. And there are many other gems as well, with ancient temples, sandy bays, and cobbled paths. Complete with appendices of useful information for the traveler, this book is a celebration of the inimitable beauty and spirit that have entranced visitors to Greece through the ages.

Concise yet authoritative 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The low ranking below must result from something personal. Sullivan is a true authority as he's taught the Crescent City's twisting, multiracial history for years at the University of New Orleans. And when Orleans Parish wanted it's cab drivers to know their own landmarks, City Hall had him put them wise. Beyond this though, it's a fine read. I used to laugh at the architectural damage the developers had done through the decade. But New Orleans has always grasped the modern and this has been its real architectural struggle. This book helps put the changes in perspective.

BEAUTIFULLY DONE! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be one of the best gifts I have ever received.Being from New Orleans and looking back at our past and what we have evolved into was simply nothing short of fantastic .It was well composed and the photography was exceptionally well done.Compared to similar books done slightly earlier ,this is a WINNER!I bought these as gifts for Christmas after I received mine.Everyone who got it raved. This author has proven to me, more than once, he is dedicated to authenticity and has the respect for New Orleans that New Orleans deserves. My hats off to you Mr.Sullivan.Great job.Keep up the good work.

Editorial Review:

Celebrating this beloved city, New Orleans Then and Now offers a unique combination of historic interest and contemporary beauty. This book features dozens of fascinating archival photographs contrasted with specially commissioned, full-color images of the same scene today. Each work is a visual lesson in the historic changes of one of our greatest urban landscapes.
