Editorial Review:

Africa is a source of amazing bio-diversity and home to some of the planet's most spectacular landscapes. The sights of this awe-inspiring continent are captured with consummate skill and sensitivity by master lensman Michael Poliza. With extensive experience photographing the animals and terrain of Africa, Poliza's viewpoint is shaped by his concern for the fragile eco-systems he chronicles. These images embody the soul of Africa's flora and fauna with a true artist's eye for color and composition. This book will be enjoyed for years to come. Poliza started as a child actor on German TV, then founded several highly successful IT ventures in the US and Germany. His "STARSHIP MILLENNIUM VOYAGE," around the world on a 75 ft expedition yacht, was avidly followed by millions via internet. Poliza now focuses mainly on filming and photography, including work for the Discovery Channel. He spends a great deal of time based in Cape Town, and is a pioneer in the use of digital photography for coffee table books.

Rather disappointing: strange choice of subjects 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book contains some beautiful illustrations of London, together with much interesting information. The "then" photos seem to date mostly from 80-150 years ago. I learned several things from the commentaries, even though I lived in or near London for many years, and made every effort to learn about the city! However, the choice of subject for many of the comparisons seems less than ideal. Surely, in a "Then and Now" book, we want to see how much things have changed over the years, don't we? Hence, we don't really need to see locations where the comparative photos prove that very little has changed! For example, do we really need to see "then and now" pictures of Westminster Abbey, just to confirm that it really has NOT changed perceptibly during the past hundred years or so? I don't think so. In a world-class city where so much has changed, via either redevelopment or wanton destruction, there are many fascinating locations that should have been afforded priority in such a book, but which are omitted altogether. Examples: the South Kensington Imperial Institute/Imperial College site (actually mentioned in the book's Introduction), Holland Park House, etc. I can only imagine that the author was forced to draw on a limited stock of "then" photographic material.

Editorial Review:

Celebrating this beloved city, London Then and Now offers a unique combination of historic interest and contemporary beauty. This book features dozens of fascinating archival photographs contrasted with specially commissioned, full-color images of the same scene today. Each work is a visual lesson in the historic changes of one of our greatest urban landscapes.

Editorial Review:

An inspirational tour and celebration of some of the most attractive small towns in the English countryside.

Complementing the best-selling The Most Beautiful Villages of England, Hugh Palmer has produced a stunning sequence of images of those ancient towns in which the true heart of England lies. All the places included here embody a long, preindustrial heritage; they are also communities of a well-preserved beauty, widely visited by travelers from all parts of the world.

Twenty-five of the most beguiling small towns of rural and seaside England are included. Here are market towns that have traditionally owed their importance and prosperity to the agricultural land surrounding them, towns that grew up by river crossings, small ports harboring both fishing and trading fleets, centers of religious activity, and even spas.

The whole of England is represented in Palmer's delightful photography and perceptive commentaries, revealing how history, site, and the availability of local building materials have combined to shape the appearance of towns in different parts of the country. Darker stones lend a slightly forbidding yet noble air to the towns of the north, such as Barnard Castle. The eastern counties have a wealth of ancient half-timbered architecture, punctuated by buildings in flint and limestone, while to the west lie the honey-colored streets and houses of the Cotswolds.

Here, too, are towns formed by their social and cultural contexts—the elegant Georgian and Victorian houses of Buxton, Derbyshire, reflecting its heyday as a fashionable spa; the imposing terraces in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, an expression of its importance as a market town and religious center with a magnificent abbey.

A Traveler's Guide, listing places to visit, to stay, and to eat, helps both armchair and actual travelers enjoy even more a visit to England's delightful countryside. 260 color photographs.

    Editorial Review:

Beautifully illustrated as well as informative, One Hundred & One Beautiful Towns in France: Food and Wine explores the local delicacies of a country known for and proud of its love of food and wine. Organized by region, this book features a wonderful sampling of French plaisirs de la table and the shops and markets where you can find them. The classic dishes and drink of France are as remarkably varied as its many different regions: Quench your thirst with a glass of calvados, the heady apple brandy that Normandy is known for; reach "land’s end" or Finistère, in Brittany, and enjoy a galette, a savory buckwheat crêpe stuffed with ham and cheese or mushrooms and lobster; don’t miss the vendange (harvest) in romantic Burgundy or a simple, hearty meal of boeuf bourguignon; in scenic Alsace enjoy a piping-hot flammekueche, a tart of local cheeses, speck, and onions. A thorough appendix provides useful addresses and phone numbers to accommodate planning your trip, including hotel listings, restaurants, wineries, and shops. Sidebars give information on local delicacies to be tasted and imbibed, as well as where to find the choicest goods.

Rome wasn't built in a day - and this book is proof! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

When you visit Rome, the buildings lend the impression that in many respects the city has not changed to any large degree in centuries. This book makes clear that while Rome may be "eternal" the architecture of the city is not!

This book has a simple lay out. On the left hand side of the book are full page 19th and early 20th century images of Rome (the latest being in the 1940s) - on the right hand side is a modern image of the same location. The older images vary in quality, but all are clear, my only complaint with the newer images is that they aren't always taken from the same angle as the older one for a true comparison.

If you have ever travelled to Rome this book is fascinating to browse through. Its amazing how much some of the sights of the city have changed in only 150 years. Mussolini made a lot more changes to the city than I realised before I read the descriptions next to the images in this book by demolishing buildings all over the place to make roads and restore some of the ruins.

    Editorial Review:

Dating back to the beginning of the first millennium, some of Rome’s most famous architectural sites are among the most ancient in the world. They survive in an enchanting urban tableau of classicism and modern Italian culture. Here are all of Rome’s most famous tourist attractions — the Coliseum, St. Peter’s Square, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps — represented in dozens of photographs, old and new, that bring the great city to life.

A collection about the last five decades 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

David Muench the Grandseigneur of landscape photography shows us his latest book in this edition. He divided it into five sections, north, north central, central south and west. What can you expect ? It's an collection of color fotos over the last five decades most of them never published before. Some are really impressing but a lot of them like you and I would have done in comparabel manner. The colors of the older photos are a little bit unsatturated. O-K- they have a historical value, especially the photos of Glen Canyon now laying under lake powell's surface.
But I think the reasen so many photos are not published before is simply, David have done better ones.
My conclusion is this book is a book for David Muench lovers and accomplished his work with some great photos and a lot of photos in the middle range. But there is no need to buy this book when you are starting to sample coffee table books about Arizona. I can recommended Jack Dykinga's "ARIZONA" or David Muench's first "ARIZONA" book.

    Editorial Review:

The first of Graphic Arts Books's fully redesigned state book series, Arizona offers breathtaking views of the state's most beloved trademarks such as red rock, desert sands, and wildflowers. World renowned landscape photographer David Muench captures the beauty of the Grand Canyon, Mexican Highlands, and the Sonoran Desert in this timeless collection of photographs. Explore this naturally rich landscape from impossible cliff dwellings to ethereal rock formations, from the giant saguaro cactus to petroglyphs carved into stone. Read about Native American heritage, Arizona's wildlife, and natural history through extended, detailed captions for each photo. With an average annual rainfall of a mere 8.3 inches, this state's unique climate and culture radiate from the pages of Arizona.
