Great if you want to read *about* the trail, but leave it home 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a great arm chair book, but questionable as an on trail guide. I just did a 300 mile through hike in Idaho/Montana. I picked up this guide, in addition to Wolf's, because it was written for northbound hikers. It's great for at home reading. For use on trail: Good parts: -Strip map style *contour* maps, a big help -Current information Bad parts: -I am virtually certain that some of this was done from a car window. Examples: -The description of how to find the spring above Pattee Creek. This is an important source, in an unlikely place on a hill side. This guide's location description boils down to 'over there some place'. -The guide misses and never notices that there is good trail leading north to the Schultz Saddle, it walks you there on a road. -The within the text mileage figures, counting sometimes from section start, sometimes from other important way point makes nice reading, but bad on trail use. This sort of information needs to be in a (boring) table, to make it unambiguous and easy to figure from. ...Tom M (PCT '94)

Editorial Review:

This book picks up the Continental Divide Trail in Idaho at the western border of Yellowstone National Park and takes the reader some 900 miles all the way to the Canadian border. From the Beaverhead Mountains in the Bitterroot Range to the Scapegoat and Bob Marshall Wilderness, Idaho and Montana's most spectacular and remote wild lands fill page after page in a book that fits into your backpack or makes for great reading anytime. You'll have no better companion than the lively and humorous voice of Lynna Howard and the dramatic, breathtaking photography of Leland Howard. Aspects of history, wildlife, geology, and biology are explained along the way. For day hikes, destination hikes, or longer treks for the avid backpacker, this book is a must. "This trail is rougher and more challenging than the Pacific Crest Trail or the Appalachian Trail," Lynna writes. "A spirit of adventure is the best thing you can pack!"

Editorial Review:

Walt Disney World: The Full Report is a compilation of tips, tricks and information gathered over years of visiting “The Most Magical Place on Earth”. The book breaks down every ride, show and attraction for each of the Walt Disney World Resort’s theme parks. Unlike other theme park guide books, Walt Disney World: The Full Report is written with a sense of humor, in hopes of “lightening up” the typical travel book. The Full Report informs you without bogging you down with complicated, structured strategies that make you feel as though you are studying for a college entrance exam. In this edition, we welcome a new addition to the WDW: Full Report, Greg McNaughton. Greg is a former Disneyland Cast Member, and he adds his insights and experience on what the Disney parks should have been or could still be. Greg is a co-host for the popular MiceCast podcast as well as the host for Imagineering My Way and At The Main Street Cinema. Greg feels that being part of three podcasts is not enough, he is also part of the Travelears podcast.

Editorial Review:

The Adventurous Traveler's Guide to Health is just what every traveler needs: a straight-forward look at what you can do to stay healthy during your travels, from start to finish. Whether headed to the urban centers of Africa or the jungles of southeast Asia, there are precautions to be taken even before setting foot on a plane, as well as important things to remember once your travels are over.

Chris Sanford aids travelers in first finding a travel health specialist and then knowing exactly which questions to ask. The Adventurous Traveler's Guide to Health will also serve as a take-along guide to help deal with illnesses or symptoms that may arise while you're on the road and as a post-trip reference for any delayed symptoms.

Aside from infectious diseases, Sanford also looks at the more common and overlooked problems travelers are likely to encounter, such as health risks in cities (pollution and motor vehicle accidents, for example), traveling if chronically ill or immuno-compromised, and high-altitude sickness. Each of the book's chapters includes a question-and-answer section based on real questions that Dr. Sanford's patients have asked him.

General travelers, including students going abroad to study or backpack through the developing world and travelers who want to get off the beaten path as well as explore the cities of the world, will find this an invaluable resource.

This book does have a lot of information. I was hoping to find out what each town was like today, not back in the 1800's. I was interested in finding out what each town offered as far as shopping, schools, hospitals, etc... Instead it is more of a history lesson.

A Treasure 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is a treasure. "Place Names of Hawaii" is an exceptional and important reference book for anyone who is interested in the Hawaiian language or anyone who just wants to know the meaning behind the names of streets, towns, valleys, land sections, fish ponds, craters, mountains, streams, islands, churches, buildings, et cetera. Every entry has an English translation of the Hawaiian name (when possible) as well as background information. It is invaluable reference book for any Hawaiian language student, but "Place Names" should also be in the library or book collection of everyone who lives in Hawaii and has a library or book collection.

Place Names of Hawaii, and Supplement to the Third Edition of the Hawaiian-English Dictionary. was the 1966 first edition, it had about 1,125 entries and was described as a "Supplement to the Third Edition of the Hawaiian-English Dictionary. The Hawaiian Dictionary: Hawaiian-English, English-Hawaiian is perhaps the most important reference book on the Hawaiian language and "Place Names" is a product of the same team of Pukui/Elbert. This is the "revised and expanded edition" with about 4,000 entries. It should also be considered a supplement to the UH Hawaiian Dictionary, although it is also a stand alone reference and can be used and enjoyed all by itself.

The revised and expanded edition of "Place Names" has been available for more than 30 years. I can not understand how it is that I am the first to write a review for Amazon; considering how important this book is to Hawaii and its language. If you like this book, I also suggest Hawaiian Street Names: The Complete Guide to Oahu Street Names. It lists many streets that are not listed in "Place Names". Make sure you get the updated edition.

The Hawaiian language lives, not only in its spoken language, books, songs and chants, but also in its place names. I live on Oahu and find it curious and confounding that many people who live here have no understanding, curiosity or appreciation about the place names that they deal with every day, like the street they live on or the town they live in. Many residents do not correctly pronounce Oahu or Honolulu. The island is not "Awahu" nor is it the city of "Hanalulu" or "Hanolulu". Get this book so that you can learn and understand what those Hawaiian place names mean and help keep Hawaii a special and beautiful place.

Blown Away! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Loy and Allen's ATLAS OF OREGON certainly is the benchmark to which all others must aspire. The hardcover edition is not inexpensive, but the sample pages displayed convinced me to take a chance, and was I glad that I did! The day I received it, I was mesmerized for hours. The quality and colors of the graphics, the exhaustive research and attention to detail were incredible. The charts, graphs, etc. are all easy to read. Every possible aspect of Oregon is covered. I believe a person could make an intelligent decision as to exactly where to live without even visiting the state! You feel you are there. Bravo!

Editorial Review:

This authoritative and beautiful volume offers a detailed look at the history, geography, and people of Oregon. More than 700 new maps are complemented by informative text exploring everything from the earliest settlers to the rise of Oregon vineyards to Portland*s traffic jams. Newly updated by an award-winning team of geographers and map makers, it is both a work of art and a fascinating reference. The perfect gift for everyone who loves Oregon. Named one of the Best Books of 2001 by the Oregonian, Portland OR.

I found this guide pleasant to look through, but not half as helpful as Best Dives of the Caribbean by Hunter Publishing, which gives a lot more detail on the dive sites, places for kids to snorkel, hotels and everything I need to plan a vacation.

A bit of a let down 3 out of 5 stars.

Earlier dive guides I have used have come from the Globetrotter series - who do not have a guide for Barbados, which is what I was looking for. Coming to the "Complete Diving Guide" after the high standards of Globetrotter is something of a disappointment. There is nothing wrong with the book in terms of the content it is providing - it gives information on the sites, some (though by no means all) dive schools, and a little background on the islands. However, the writing style is very narrative - think "what I did on my diving holiday this summer" type essays. The presentation is also a bit dated. It is not a bad guide by any means, but if Globetrotter do get around to publishing on the area, it is almost certain to be a better bet.

Editorial Review:

The Complete Diving Guides to scuba diving in the Eastern Caribbean, including descriptions of ALL dive sites, dive stores and operators. Island maps show the location of dive sites and stores. Dive sites are illustrated by underwater maps and photographs.

Volume 1 gives you everything you ever need to know about scuba diving on these fantastic Caribbean islands: Dominica, Martinique, St Lucia, St Vincent & Grenadines, Grenada, Tobago & Barbados.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) concerns the impact of a product on the environment. LCA's holistic perspective of products' environmental performance makes it a key concept for environmental management in industry as well as for environmental policy-making in government.

This book for environmental engineers and managers, ecodesigners and students presents a broad repertoire of LCA methological alternatives, their implications and their usefulness in many different applications such as product development, marketing, production and waste management.

Here environmental professionals can learn to interpret LCA methodology and results. The text also provides indepth coverage of LCA applications and offers many useful exercises to help prepare for the 10 major LCA exercise projects that are also included.

Good general culture info 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The book consists of good travel tips for specific countries and cultures, but nothing in-depth. I had been expecting something more universally applicable, such as tips for a gentleman while he is actually traveling abroad, rather than cultural tips for after he has arrived. Overall its a good book for a collection and makes a decent reference, but not what I expected or was seeking.

Editorial Review:

A Gentleman Abroad provides basic and helpful information for any man traveling to the 40 most popular foreign travel destinations in the world. In addition to aphorisms and sidebars that make the books in the GentleManners series unique, this book contains 40 chapters, one for each destination. Within each chapter will be almanac data, charts on average monthly temperature, foreign size charts for shopping, time differences, embassy information, basic foreign phrases, tipping customs, and other information that will allow a gentleman to navigate the city properly. Among the cities included are Rome, Paris, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Sydney, Amsterdam and Berlin.
