I am walking the Camino this coming Xmas. I will bring the book with me as guide. It looks very well done and easy. I like also the inner jorney that it suggests. Unfortunatly there is no information about doing the Camino in Winter.

Camino de Santiago 5 out of 5 stars.

The book was everything I expected that it would be. It contains great maps and detailed descriptions of the villages visited; distance between them; accommodations and more as one travels the Camino de Santiago.

The Best! 5 out of 5 stars.

This guide to the Camino came highly recommended to us, and it is the best I've seen! It includes a brief summary of the history of Spain, and the front cover unfolds to show little maps that outline the trail. Each of the 22 sections has a detailed map. Each map covers about 15k noting the various trails, villages and districts, and for each map a short chapter on what to see and pictures of hostels on that particular map. Each section has a blank page for notes so you can journal your thoughts. The book is skinny (though a little bit weighty), and would fit nicely into a backpack. Definitely a good source.

Representing the most popular Christian pilgrimage anywhere in the world, this guide combines maps, photographies, and hospitality information to help travelers in their journey.

Don't waste your money on this one. 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This "guide" to the Galapagos contains long, boring chapters on tour companies, logistics (including insightful advice such as "bring lots of film" and "don't drink the water"), how to take photographs, and mainland Ecuador. There is a short chapter on Galapagos wildlife. Mr. Boyce owns Galapagos Travel, a tour company specializing in trips to the Galapagos. It is obvious that Mr. Boyce wrote this book for two reasons: (1) to establish himself as an "authority" on the Galapagos, and (2) to sell a copy to everyone who gets on one of his boats. Don't waste your money on this one. (I can't recommend his tour company, either.) If you are in the market for a good guide to the Galapagos, I highly recommend Michael Jackson's authoritative Galapagos: A Natural History Guide.

Editorial Review:

The essentials of a "how-to" travel adventure to the Land of Darwin are available in this comprehensive guide. From the basics of what airline to choose to a detailed analysis of the Tour Operator network, the author describes the rules and tells the reader how to play the Galapagos adventure travel game. History, wildlife, and details on what to pack are also includEd

A unique resource for the right traveler 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is meant for those who are in the planning process of a long trip. Budgeting is important when planning. It is going to be most helpful for those backpackers planning on doing Southeast Asia, but its a good way to come up with ideas for other unique destinations as well. Even if you want to do very little planning, this is a good marker. I personally liked that he put a lot of things in terms of couples, b/c that is the way we will be traveling. He has a lot of experience and I valued his opinions, making me rethink how much time I would spend in some countries. Also, it is a light read, and the author makes it easy to skip sections and get just the info that applies to you.

Should be a Blog. 2 out of 5 stars.

I have traveled far and wide so perhaps I shouldn't have bought this book. If you haven't traveled this will give you good direction but I would have liked to scan it at a book store to know it was a waste of my time.

Excellent map of the Continent. 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

Folds out to be about 3 feet wide and 2.5 feet tall, with maps printed on both sides. The large orange box in the middle of the greater-Europe side (which shows the area printed on the opposite side of the map) is a bit annoying, but that seems to be the worst of it. The map's heavier-duty cover is built to not mutilate the paper map inside when folding and unfolding, and the legends are clear and helpful. The largest map goes from the northernmost part of Great Britain to the top of North Africa, and from the outskirts of Moscow, Russia, to the outskirts of Ankara, Turkey. Aside from the orange box, there is nothing obscuring the continent. Scandinavia is chopped off the top of the map and moved into a greater-detailed box out in the Atlantic; I fully agree with this choice and prefer it over other maps I have owned where showing Scandinavia in its correct spot means either a lesser-detailed map, or moving Italy to another side of the map. The detailed side of the map showing central Europe only runs from Dover, UK, to Paris to Avignon, France, and Warsaw, Poland, to Belgrade, Serbia. It shows the rail relationships between these European cities and most stops in-between: Dover, UK; Paris; Turin; Milan; Munich; Brussels; Cologne; Berlin; Vienna; Budapest; Warsaw; and Prague. The detailed map covers the heartland of where most American travelers go in Europe, and shows definitively how to travel to other popular destinations, such as Madrid, Rome, Athens, London, Moscow, and Copenhagen. Either side of the map is great for posting on a wall, and the well-marked scenic rail routes make it easy to plan a train ride. Also simply excellent as a general-purpose map of Europe, and superior in this respect to road maps of the Continent.

LOVE IT! Perfect size - essential information to take with you on a trip. 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Buongiorno!
I recommend all the Eyewitness Travel guide books to anyone who is planning a trip to Italy. I give this book as a freebie to all my clients who sign up for the tours of Tuscany that I lead each year. They can take it with them to all the day trips - it's light, without compromising the quality of images and useful information on the most beautiful stops in Tuscany.

Being from Italy (Florence to be exact), I was surprised to see how accurate and easy to find the information was, while at the same time, keeping it concise and essential.

If you'd like a more thorough book on all of Italy, I recommend the "Italy" guidebook, which is also by DK Eyewitness travel. However this last one is not light, and you may have to leave it home before going on your trip. Full of useful information.

Food for thought, not only source 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I found the information to be helpful and honest in opinion. I am restoring a sail boat and have been reading tons of books on all systems from electrical, mechanical, heating, cooking, efficiency, safety, etc and felt this book was helpful. It doesn't have all the answers, or cover all the choices, but the author shares what she knows in an honest manner and gives actual models and types of different items for comparison. I liked the female point of view as to ease of management, cleanliness of systems, & actual daily use efficiency. A heating system was rated high, but messy, which made author reluctant to use, I appreciated the candor. As I said....Food for thought, definately worth the price.

An important book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Very often the finances of cruising are left out of the discussion, and here it is not. It's really an inspiration. Still, I think it's important to note that Anne doesn't sail a junk anymore, and that she's living a bit different life that's perhaps a bit more moderate. Also try "Sea-steading" Jerome FitzGerald to fill out the vision a bit, get them both.

Editorial Review:

Maintaining that there is little preventing one from crusing the world by boat, this book provides practical ideas for turning one's dreams of life at sea into reality, with suggestions for preplanning and simplifying one's life.

A Good Read! 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Gary Althen's richly detailed guide shines a psychological, cultural and sociological spotlight on American customs, values, attitudes and behavior. Organized into 22 chapters that cover just about every aspect of American life, the book hits you with its uncanny insight, accuracy and honesty. Although he doesn't completely avoid stereotyping (and doesn't seem at all bothered by it), Althen presents the good, the bad and the quirky. He explains the "why" behind American attitudes and manners. Even though this is a guide for foreigners visiting, doing business in or living in the United States, we from getAbstract also suggest this book to Americans. It's an eye-opener about the national personality, or the perceived national personality, from naïvete to individualism. As Scotsman Robert Burns wrote, "Oh wad some power the giftie gie us, to see oursels as others see us." Well, here's your chance.

Editorial Review:

In clear language and with numerous examples, this book describes the basic characteristics of American culture: values, style of communication, patterns of thinking, customary behaviours, and underlines how they are different from the ways of other cultures. It then shows how these characteristics are reflected in the many aspects of American life which the foreigner encounters (including politics, social relations, personal hygiene, public behaviour, studying and business). The book also offers concrete suggestions on how to learn more about American culture and how to respond most effectively to the Americans one meets.

Worthy of Space on Anyone's RV Bookshelf!! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

To rephrase Ratty's famous comment to Mole in "The Wind in the Willows": There is nothing- absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in an RV.

By even the most charitable of definitions, I am not what anyone would call "handy" when it comes to fixing things about our sticks-and-bricks house. I am not good at it and I hate taking the time for even the most basic of repairs.

Having said that, I also note that I love puttering around our 5th wheel and could happily spend hours at a time on RV related projects! I guess that's why I think the 10 Minute Tech books are so terrific. More than 600 practical and money-saving ideas in each of the three volumes . . . clever, practical solutions to both everyday challenges and to obscure situations the average RVer will never come across. Each idea presents a practical, real-life solution. Each has been developed by an RVer. The projects are presented in language which is brief, understandable and to the point . . . and the illustrations do a great job of clearing up any questions left unanswered by the text.

The books are conveniently divided into sections on Livability, Safety, Appliances, Maintenance, Automotive, In Camp, Systems, Storage, Towing, Accessories, Sanitation, Doors-Hatches-Handles, Cleaning-Protecting, and Tools. Only a brief perusal is needed to start the creative juices flowing - to send the reader, tool box in hand, off on another project. A fun read when you are nowhere near an RV. An indispensable reference when you are on the road.

Editorial Review:

This book is a compilation of the best tips submitted by readers of the Trailer Life magazine column "10-Minute Tech." These RVers have discovered simple, quick ways to solve small onboard problems; get things to run smoother, quieter, and better; personalize an RV with changes and upgrades; and make life on the road easier.

Quite enjoyable reading. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you love all things Italian, you'll enjoy reading Isabella Dusi's
"Vanilla Beans & Brodo". You will feel what it's like to live in a hill town in Tuscany. Isabella intersperses her everyday life in Motalcino with a little history of the area. It made me to want to visit the town again and to personally address all of the people in her book that she encounters in her everyday life. The book is a little slow going at first, but does get better as you get into the book.

Editorial Review:

Isabella Dusi, a native Australian, settled in Montalcino, a beautiful mountain eyrie famous for its wine and the proud nature of its inhabitants. Her acceptance into this close-knit community was a hard-won thing and has inspired Isabella to capture the true spirit of Montalcino. Vanilla Beans & Brodo tells of the violent history of this medieval village, which has lefts its mark on the character traits of the Montalcinese, and also offers a rare insight into the anxiety, joy, fun, and pressure of daily life as it unfolds with the seasons. An evocative story of the rivalry between village neighborhoods, of football fever and festival pageantry, Isabella Dusi destroys the myth that Tuscan villages are tranquil places, and instead reveals a life infinitely rich and full of dramas.
