Lots of good information and neat pictures. Nice to get a well done book for a change

Terrific Directions 5 out of 5 stars.

The two things I like most about this guide book are: 1) the detailed driving and walking directions and 2) with all the false information on the Web, I feel safe disrobing on the beaches listed.

The top book in its field 5 out of 5 stars.

A splendid successor to the out-of-print guides to naked places by Lee Baxandall, the current book is full of information, easy to use, stylish, and colorful (that means photos --- lots of 'em). Over 50 countries are covered (or uncovered). Whether you prefer to get naked at a beach, a resort, a campground, hot springs, or a swimming pool, you'll find this guide reliable and not a few times surprising.

Lee Baxandall tried to include every place where nudity seemed to occur. This book is much more selective, presenting locations only if they really seem to be among the best. There are top picks for beginning naturists/nudists: places that are readily accessible, stable, attractive, and hassle-free.

Much other info complements location descriptions: web addresses, phone numbers, directions, bits of history, and various tips. The most information presented refers to nude locations in the USA. Americans will find it very easy to look around their country, and outside it too, for respite and vacations of the naked variety.

This enticing guidebook will get naturist minds really wandering, with their bodies sure to follow!

Editorial Review:

There's nothing like the life-affirming buzz of a major festival, whether it's toasting the arrival of summer in Iceland, chugging beers at Munich's Oktoberfest, or joining in the orgy of beats at Ibiza's closing parties. This book is a guide to over two hundred of the greatest events on earth, and represents the culmination of years of research, travelling and party-hopping by Rough Guide authors and contributors. Armed with this book, you'll find out all you need to know before you go, and what to do while you're there, as well as the practical details that can make or break your trip.

Every country in the world has its own festivals and celebrations. They're a colourful key to unlocking local cultures and can make for a fantastic travel experience. Many travellers have their own special memories of spectacular events they have attended, whether it's a long-planned visit to the Fiesta de San Fermin, or a stumbled-upon saint's-day procession in a dusty southern Italian town. The festivals in this book come in all shapes and sizes. Many have been around, in one form or another, for decades - some, such as Kumbh Mela and Naadam, for centuries - and have deep roots in the culture of the country they take place in. Others, such as Burning Man, will be following, perhaps even initiating, newer traditions. Some, like Sri Lanka's Esala Perahera, will have deep religious significance; others will be secular occasions based on a key, history changing event - Lewes Bonfire Night, for example. Some, like Pushkar Camel Fair, will be a mixture of all of these things. And some, like Spain's La Tomatina, will be no more than a massive food-fight. However, nearly all the festivals in this book draw people from local communities together and demonstrate tangibly the Fiesta de San Fermin values and priorities of local cultures - and, as such, they almost all involve some sort of cultural exchange; attending and getting involved in a sensitive and non-voyeuristic way offers a travel experience like no other.

The philosophy of this book, indeed of Rough Guides in general, is a relatively simple one: to get out there and see the world - responsibly - and to enjoy yourself while you're doing it. Which is definitely something you can do at all the festivals featured in this book. The list of events we've included is fairly subjective and inevitably highly selective. So how did we choose? Well, the list in part reflects the interests and preferences of our writers, and of visitors to our website. Also, we have tried to make sure that cultures and traditions from most, if not all, parts of the world are represented. We've also only included festivals that are annual and well established - attended by thousands rather than hundreds of people, and that have a big focus on participation. So, although you won't find all of the big music festivals, sports events and one-off parties here, you will find the classics - Rio Carnival, Glastonbury and Mardi Gras - as well as smaller events such as Scotland's Common Ridings and Australia's Birdsville Races. Arguably, these are the real gold dust in this book - all big enough to produce a great vibe in their own individual way, but small enough to retain a sense of community, authenticity and accessibility that many of the mega-events have lost.

Before you pick that perfect festival to begin your conquest of the World Party circuit, it's worth remembering that there are some significant barriers in the way. All too often, festivals can be the worst time for travelling to - and staying in - the place in which the event is held. Accommodation prices rocket and the huge crowds can leave you feeling alienated while the festival bangs away somewhere in the distance. The golden rule, therefore, is to make your plans and book your accommodation at least six months in advance. This may not sit with the "life's too short, live for the moment" feeling that sees you packing your party costume in the first place, but it will prevent you having to fork out a fortune for the only vacant hotel room in town. The "Doing..." section of each event provides advice and suggestions on overnight options (including good park benches, where appropriate) for all budgets. The other main concern is safety. Some events, such as the running of the bulls at Pamplona's Fiesta de San Fermin, are inherently dangerous. Don't feel pressured into thinking you've got to take part in the encierro: it's a great thrill if you get away with it, but, every year, dozens of runners - mainly drunk tourists - are injured (and occasionally killed). Another risk lies with being in a place where thousands of partygoers are losing their inhibitions at the same time. People occasionally freak out, pickpockets can relieve you of your cash and passport before you've cracked open your first beer, and, most importantly, crowds can stampede. Finally, trying a cocktail of drink and drugs for the first time is almost certainly best not done in the middle of a crowd of half a million people. Nothing in life is risk-free, and, ultimately, it's up to you. Our aim is that you'll be inspired to experience at least one of the events in this book. Maybe you'll get carried away and make it your life's mission to go to them all. If you do, the experiences can be memorable: swigging vodka on the banks of an extinct volcano before skinny-dipping at 3am during the Westmann Islands Festival; staggering down New Orleans' Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras with a bucket-sized iced Sazerac cocktail and a pocketfull of throws; waking up to the scent of a thousand camels in Pushkar; and wild, celebratory beers at 9am following the survival of another bum-clinchingly terrifying Pamplona bull run. We hope that this book will be your well-thumbed companion to many festivals and parties around the world. Happy travels!

Help us update If you feel there's a festival or event that should be included in the book, or at least mentioned on the website, contact us at worldparty.roughguides.com and tell us about it. Enclose some photos if you have them. World Party is an interactive project and depends on the feedback of its readers. If your contribution makes it into the next edition, you will receive a free Rough Guide of your choice - and, of course, a copy of the new World Party.

Not up to past standards 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The "Worst Case Scenario" people are really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Surviving an airplane crash and building a snow shelter can be important! But encountering aliens, while offering both an extreme scenario and a touch of humor, isn't specifically travel-related. The same with a plummeting elevator, or losing someone who's tailing you. On the other hand, they've omitted some important items, like getting arrested in a foreign country, or losing your passport. This series is losing steam.

Light reading for the adventurous tourist 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book, like the others in the series, is tongue in cheek. Some of the advice and scenarios are practical but others are completely in fun. My favourite was the advice of what to do if you are threatened with alien abduction. You should not let your mind give in to them. In other words, stop hallucinating and you will be just fine. :)

At the same time some of the advice is practical and could be useful to everyone, not just travellers. For example it gives advice on what to do if your car ends up hanging over the edge of a cliff. While not an everyday occurrence it almost happened to a friend of mine during a snowstorm on the highway.

Editorial Review:

Providing frightening and funny real information, this indispensable follow-up to the New York Times best-seller, The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, continues as the definitive handbooks for those times when life (and travel) takes a sudden turn for the worse. Another essential companion for a perilous age. Because you never know...

Coffee Table Travel Guide 3 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

We bought the Insight Guide and were pleased by the wonderful photos and the descriptive sections that cover culture, food, activities, and regions. However, if you are looking for hard details essential to making travel plans before and during a trip, this book is totally useless. Even if other books fail to capture the flavor of Puerto Rico, they can be relied upon to locate hotels, restaurants, museums and hours etc. This is a decorative book, worth reading, but not a travel guide in the usual sense of the word. All these impressions are fresh, since we arrived home just last night. As Northern Californians who look to Hawaii and Mexico for tropical vacations, we found PR, especially the time we spent on Vieques, to be at least the equal of our usual locales, and the time on Vieques to be unmatched in terms of mile-long beaches that you have to yourself.

Editorial Review:

Inviting visitors to experience the lesser-known charms of Puerto Rico, a pocket guide uses San Juan as a base and provides itineraries to Old San Juan, El Junke National Forest, the Arecibo Observatory, and the Museo de Arte.

Good resource for Europeans, not Americans 2 out of 5 stars.
88 of 113 people found this review helpful.

As an American student looking to find work in Europe, this book was absolutely no help to me at all. It is published in Great Britain, and probably 95% of the addresses she gives are in the UK. I found a couple of interesting ones in the U.S., but all the good ones were not American. Also, prices are in pounds, not dollars, which makes it difficult for an American to fully comprehend without a calculator and info on exchange rates. If you are British, this would probably be a great book for you!

Another thing which I found not very helpful is that the book is targeted to people who want to just want to hop from place to place, hence the title. It is geared for the vagabond worker, and assumes that these people will settle for whatever job it takes to stay travelling.

What really turned me off was that the book highly suggested hitchhiking as the primary mode of transportation, and spent a great deal of space discussing the beneftis of hitchhiking. Any other travel book strongly discourages this!

In a nutshell, if you are not British and you do not feel comfortable with hitchhiking, do not buy this book!

Editorial Review:

The thirteenth edition of the unique and acclaimed guide for the working traveller that explains how to find temporary work around the world not only in advance but also when on the spot while travelling. It incorporates hundreds of first-hand accounts from people who have actually done the jobs with a mass of hard factual information to offer authoritative advice on how to find work from selling ice cream in Cape town to working as a film extra in Bangkok.

Includes a country-by-country guide to the opportunities to be found.

A great introduction to tourism 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This text provides a great overview of the tourism industry, from what tourism is to its organization to the theories that help fomulate such a diverse industry. This book should be studied by every student studying tourism.

Outstanding blend of theory and implementation 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book offers a fusion of theory and practical advice that is directly relevant to managers - an area where many current tourism texts fall short. It is both strategic and tactical, providing readers with a broad overview of the tourism environment as well as implementable ideas for improving business performance. I have read and enjoyed the original version by McIntosh, and the new insights from Ritchie and Goeldner add new depth to an already exceptional read.

Look around. You'll find no book in the field as thorough and well written as this.

I really like this book!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is very insightful on both, aspects of tourism and travel, as well as the financial affects that tourism can play on a country's economy. The authors seem to know what they're talking about and they're very good at relaying their knowledge to their readers in a concise way.

Great to carry on the go 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My wife and I love the Top 10 series. We always buy a Frommers or Rick Steves book for the trip's planning, but the Top 10 is a must for the trip itself. It'll fit in a pocket (a long one), and will provide quick and easy references to the most important sights, as well as maps and public transportation routes.

Take this with you! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is ideal in many ways. Read it before you travel - it reviews all of the highlights that you'll want to see while in Venice. It also explains and diagrams the public transportation system, a useful thing to know in advance of your arrival.
This book is a great size to take along while touring the Venice area. I referred to it often because navigating Venice can be a lot like trying to find your way around a labyrinth!
A nice feature of this book is that it cross-references topics in a variety of ways. If you want to see sights in a certain geographic area, you can look things up that way. However, if you have a special interest, like churches, art galleries, or whatever, the book is organized so that you can easily look up your specific interest and locate the sights you want to see throughout Venice. The book lists the entrance fees to the major attractions, as well as the days and times when they open and close.
Another nice feature of this book is the variety of historical information it contains on all manner of things Venetian - from gondolas to glass blowing. My husband and I used this book on our first trip to Venice and truly found it invaluable. I highly recommend it.

You'll embarrass yourself reading this. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This may be the best travelogue I've ever read. Horwitz has an uncanny ability with words, to paint the scene and make the reader feel like they are there with him. I felt myself transported back to the countries I have visited, and can affirm that they were accurately represented. Horwitz is complimentary to the myriad cultures of the Middle East while being honest about the difficulties of the countries. And his adventures would be completely implausible, if they had been in a novel. The book is laugh-out-loud funny. I mean that. I found myself on the bus unable to stop chortling, or explain myself to the passengers around me. Looking for a good time? Read this book.

Accent on the misadventures and the irony... 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was written in 1991, just as Desert Storm was beginning; it gives only two chapters and an epilogue to Iraq itself. However, those chapters vividly remind us just how dreadful Iraq was under Saddam. And if you're thinking of going to Yemen, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Libya, Sudan, Lebanon, or Iran, this book will give you a taste of each country, with the accent on its irrational side, guaranteed to destroy your romantic notions. Con artists, urban decay, disintegrating vehicles, and an amazing variety of characters are common to all.

The best chapters to me were those on Sudan - Horwitz joins a engineer's wife who goes three times a week to a leper colony near Khartoum to dress wounds. Horwitz writes: "After visiting the Iran-Iraq front, I'd thought nothing could faze me. But a corpse, however disfigured, is past its pain...It is quite another matter to confront humans whose flesh is still being ravaged almost as you watch." Overcome, he rushes for the outside air and steps in a pool of sewage. "Two male lepers, squatting against the wall, broke out laughing, clapping their stumps together. The American is standing in shit! Their mirth was contagious and I stood there for a moment, knee-deep in gunk, gulping the foul air and chuckling along with them. It was the least I could do, lighten a leper's day."

In Southern Sudan, Horwitz visits the Dinka people whose rebellion is being snuffed out by the Sudanese government and Arab mercenaries. The Dinka society revolves around cattle: "the Dinka worshiped their cows, sang to the animals, even recited love poetry to them." He follows the sound of clapping and singing and discovers several hundred emaciated and starving women dancing, mimicking cattle, remembering their former lives, "uninhibited and ecstatic."

Several days later, a congressional "fact-finding" committee lands, with Gary Ackerman on board (a Democratic congressman who is "real involved in this hunger thing.") He hustles over to talk to Horwitz: "`Did you meet any slaves? Do they appreciate the American aid? Tell me about shopping in Khartoum. Is it junk?' Before I could answer, he cut in - `sorry, got to run' - and rushed off with the others for yet another photo-op."

As other reviewers have mentioned, much of the book IS funny, but surrealistic irony is the prevailing tone, and to me this tended to overwhelm the individual portraits of each country. One can't help but like Horwitz - he is a caring man as well as a journalist with an eye to the snappy story - and I wondered if his interest in the Middle East had been an enduring one. However, his subsequent books are on other subjects. He gives thumbnail histories of each country, but the anecdotes are the memorable part of the book. If you want to learn more, you'll have to look to another writer, but this book will make you want to know more.

Editorial Review:

A journalist chronicles his travels throughout the Middle East, discussing Cairo's seedy nightclubs, paid assassins in Libya, a mourner at the Ayatollah's funeral, and more. Reprint. 25,000 first printing. NYT.
