Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1YSMB6ZYXFYYN Matt. C. Bischoff has clearly and concisely listed all the great hidden and publicly known hot springs in Nevada and California. It's a great regional hotsprings guide.

Editorial Review:

Whether you're a practicing balneologist (one who seeks the healing properties of natural hot springs) or just an occasional dipper, this book steers you toward the natural baths from Surprise Valley in Northern California to the Mexico/California border. By the looks of the overview map, there may be more hot springs than casinos in Nevada, with warm waters to suit both your style and desire for adventure. Steamboat Hot Springs, 11 miles south of Reno, provides visiting gamblers with a resort-style respite, in contrast to the primitive Gold Strike Hot Spring, found in a narrow valley near the Colorado River. This spring requires a 4-mile round-trip hike and some boulder scrambling "with substantial drop-offs"; the hot waterfalls and canyon views are reportedly worth the effort. Names such as "Crab Cooker," "Dirty Socks," and "Terminal Geyser," combined with tempting black-and-white photos, make you want to grab a towel and head west.

Good, but it could have been better 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of this series. The 2nd edition of "100 Best Spas of the World" was directly responsible for getting me into the spa scene. And it provided a wealth of information that allowed me to create my own spa vacations (sometimes at a much cheaper price than going to some of the posh places listed in the book) simply by taking a less expensive hotel or motel room in the same beautiful towns, and then going into the spas on an hourly or daily basis. But what seems to have happened somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd editions, is that cost-cutting accountants decided that the beautiful color photographs which made the 2nd edition such a masterpiece were no longer cost-effective, and they were relegated to 15 pages in the front of the 3rd edition. This is unfortunate, for it was those beautiful photographs spread throughout the entire text of the 2nd edition that made the reader feel that they were "there" enjoying the wonders of spa living. Now, the 3rd edition is still an excellent book, with a wealth of pertinent information concerning the great spas of the world. But my frank recommendation (especially if you are a beginner in going to spas) is that you get yourself a copy of the 2nd edition of this book (dated 2003). The photographs are what "made" this book, and hopefully for the next edition the publishers will return to the previous format, which made this book the best of its kind in the marketplace. I'm still giving this book 5-stars because of the respect I have for the information contained in the book, but the 2nd edition is deserving of 6 or 7 stars, and it's too bad that this new edition is not in the same category. If you want a book on your coffee table that will give you a visual tour of some of the great spas of the world, and make you yearn to go to a spa on your next vacation, get the 2nd edition.

Lots of pictures in this book, but most are of the inside of the ryokans, tatami rooms, and scenery. Not a whole lot of pictures of the onsen's.

Editorial Review:

The lavish photos of inns and hot springs collected in this book will provide homeowners with a wealth of inspiration.

With more than 250 color photographs, this is essential for anyone interested in luxury Japan. Each chapter discusses an extravagant inn, its local history, and its cultural traditions. Each of the properties has been handpicked by the author for their strong design aesthetic. The lodgings pictured here will bring a flush of new ideas to home decorators across the world.

Good Hot Spring book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book after I realized I had a desire to see and soak in as many hot springs as I can. Unfortunately I will be going to AZ in the summer and it will be too hot. The book is well written, informative and gives a beginner soaker all the necessary information that they will need to enjoy this experience including precautions and clear descriptions of the experience. I will be touring the only hot spring in the location this summer that will be close to my destination and that is OK to go during the summer. Without this book, I would not have known which springs would be insanity to go into during summer months.

Fully updated, this guide has detailed information on twenty-eight of the best natural and accessible hot springs in Arizona.

Editorial Review:

The first book to present medical evidence that mineral springs can prevent and cure disease--and to tell you which spas are most effective

• Lists more than 200 of the best hot springs and mineral springs in the world and the health conditions best treated at each, with a special emphasis on springs in the U.S. and Canada

• Reviews additional healing techniques that best complement bathing in and drinking medicinal waters--such as acupuncture, homeopathy, fasting programs, and fitness training

• Includes photos of everything from famous spas to little-known hot springs

The Fountain of Youth does exist! Author Nathaniel Altman shows that "taking the waters" is a powerful healing tool that rejuvenates the body and prevents a host of illnesses.  Until now, it's been the best-kept secret for promoting and maintaining health and vitality.

The use of natural mineral spring water for the prevention and cure of disease dates back 5000 years to the Bronze Age. Hot springs reached their heyday in the United States in the latter part of the 19th century and were well attended until the early 1940s. Balneotherapy--using natural mineral spring water for the prevention and cure of disease--continued to thrive elsewhere in the world and is making a big comeback in the United States. It is an accepted form of mainstream medicine in Europe and Japan, where an abundance of medical evidence shows that in addition to relieving stress, certain mineral waters can help the body heal itself from heart, liver, and kidney problems, skin diseases, asthma, digestive disorders, arthritis, and a host of other health problems.

FABULOUS!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I thought this was a fantastic book. I bought this book thinking that I'd get a relatively straightforward discussion of the history of bathing, but this is actually much more. The author, a young woman with a taste for adventure, writes about her own experiences as she tackles the problem of how to open a bathhouse, crossing the globe and visiting baths in many countries. But instead of taking a highly authoritative tone from the start, she begins with a naive, befuddled tone, describing how she practically stumbles into the bathing scene, seduced not only by the baths, but by the cultures and places she visits. As a reader, I can see the transformation of the author from a novice to an expert over the course of the book, which to me is reminiscent of some of the best travel writing (consider Bill Bryson's self-deprecatory writing, the feeling that on starting his journey, he is no more informed than you or me). I think this book is only partially about bathing, and equally about getting your imagination captured by something different and exciting. I found it really inspirational, it really gives a sense that there is nothing stopping the average reader from deciding to get on a plane and travel the world to learn about something completely different, even if you don't speak the language or don't have any technical experience. So much bad travel writing condescends to the reader, makes me feel that unless I've lived 25 years in Provence or have climbed Mt. Everest, I couldn't possibly appreciate the world. This book made me feel like, with a little bit of courage and a lot of excitement, even I could explore strange places and meet different people!

Editorial Review:

People journey to Greece for the ruins, Turkey for the Aya Sophia, and Russia for St. Basil's, but Alexia Brue travels with a different itinerary: to visit the baths. At once deeply personal and highly informative, Cathedrals of the Flesh is the candid and playful account of one woman's determination to follow her passion.

Editorial Review:

Spa Style Asia is the authoritative guide to Asia's healing traditions and the luxury spas that practice them. The book opens with Spa Therapies, a study of the major healing systems of Asia—Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, and Thai. It offers an overview of the cultural and historical backgrounds of these healing traditions, details what you can expect from specific treatments and therapies, and provides recipes that can be recreated at home. Spa Cuisine surveys the major national cuisines of Asia and provides healthy recipes for complete meals comprising soup, appetizer, main course, dessert and drink, together with calorie, protein, carbohydrate and fat counts. While Asia is the primary focus of these first two sections, traditional Asian treatments and recipes that have been updated with a modern twist, and international therapies and cuisines are included in the New Asian and Cosmopolitan chapters respectively. Spa Digest is organized geographically, and serves as an illustrated directory to the region's extensive range of quality spa retreats. Insights into the essence of each property will help you decide on the spa that best suits your needs, personality and preference, while a fact-packed Spa Statistics panel summarizes the facilities, treatments and therapies, provisions for couples, availability of spa cuisine, services, recreation options and contact details.

Editorial Review:

'It is well known that Southern Texas possesses a greater variety of Mineral Waters than any other country on the globe' enthused a promotion for one of Texas' many watering spas of the nineteenth century. Though most are closed and nearly forgotten today, Texas spas and resorts once drew thousands of visitors from across the country, seeking healing of body and spirit in the rejuvenating mineral waters. This book offers the first comprehensive history of Texas' healing springs. Janet Valenza tracks the rise, popularity, and decline of the 'water cure' from the 1830s to the present day. She follows the development of major spas and resorts, such as Mineral Wells and Indian Hot Springs near El Paso, as well as of smaller, family-run springs. She also describes how mineral waters influenced patterns of settlement, transportation routes, commerce, and people's attitudes toward the land. Period photos and quotes from those seeking cures offer vivid glimpses into the daily life at the springs, which Valenza lists and describes county-by-county in the appendix. Janet Valenza holds a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Texas at Austin. Currently she teaches geography at Austin-area colleges and universities.

Very Informative 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book has some great information on what appears to be some fabulous spas and resorts. It was nice to see not only great photos but real practical information like the types of packages offered, the prices, accommodations available, and even information on tourist attractions near the spas. It also gives you some explanations of the types of services offered which was helpful. It covers spas from all over the globe which makes it quite a nice comprehensive overview as well. I haven't actually tried one of them out yet - but it has been nice to dream.

Stick to Internet Search 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was hoping to find out of the obvious spas identified, not The Four Seasons and the Ritz. A simple search of high end spas would have done this, I was hoping for hard to find and interesting rather than what would have been easily found on yahoo. I am terribly disappointed this was a total waste of time. The pricing is unclear as to what includes the hotel and what is for spa services only, so it's not even useful information. I still have to go research each one to simply compare pricing structure and services offered.

Editorial Review:

Both first-timers and avid spa-goers will adore this guide to the top 100 spas in the world. Details on spas at resorts, on cruise ships, in world-class hotels, on remote islands, and in centuries-old cities, along with full-color photographs make selecting a relaxing getaway stress-free.
