Dear Sister, the book saved me lots of time and headache... 4 out of 5 stars.
45 of 45 people found this review helpful.

Dear Sandra,

Thanks for lending me Fodor's How to Pack book! Having never been abroad before, I had a lot to learn and didn't even know it. I'm going to have to get a copy of this book for myself, especially for the checklists of "Basic Wardrobe Options for Women," ditto for men, and what to put into a first aid kit, laundry kit, sewing kit, toiletries kit, etc. I read the sections on packing for cruises, mountain trips, hot and cold weather, and adventure trips even though I wasn't going to use them for this vacation, just because they were interesting and I kept picking up the stray tip. (Thank goodness I don't have to use their advice on traveling with children!)

The sections on what to wear on the plane, what to pack in one's carry-on (as well as reminders of what NOT to pack), food for the journey, and how to pack luggage that will be checked in were extremely useful. Who would have thought to pack clothes in those plastic bags from dry cleaners to keep items from wrinkling?? I'm trying it and will let you know how it works out. They also talk about the different philosophies of packing -- the "roll" style that is especially good for duffel bags, vs. the "interlock" style where you stack layers and then fold them all together to decrease wrinkling.

On the down side, the book seemed padded and too chatty, when, being the procrastinator that I am, I needed to get the information right away. But I was able to find it, and someone could just use the many helpful checklists and be way ahead of the game, as I was. And there were things I never thought about, such as compiling a "personal documents" file to put in my carry-on, with a copy of my passport and driver's license and a photo of my luggage in case it got lost.

Altogether I found this a must-read for either the procrastinator or the unseasoned traveler such as yours truly. Thanks for caring enough to send me this book!

Best wishes,
-H

The only book to have! 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

As a medical intern, I have utilized many different books/manuals in the hospital and outpatient setting. This book is by far, the most complete and satisfying source that I have ever used. The algorhythms are clearly written, and provide information on diagnosis and treatment based upon current guidelines. It is a must buy!

Skillful Synopsis 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I have two bookshelves full of books that I regularly consult on travel medicine issues. Obviously, it's impractical for anyone to carry these heavy resources, and therefore it is lucky that there is a skillful synopsis available by Stephen Bezruchka. Dr. Bezruchka has spent a lot of his adult life in developing countries, mostly Nepal. He has distilled the most basic information that might confront the international traveller into a book that is the same size as your passport. The tone is reassuring and authoratative. You will want to read the pre-travel information before you go, but you may not look at the rest of it--until you need it. I think this is the lightest, most useful resource available to travelers.

Editorial Review:

The classic reference for international travelers-completely updated.

The Pocket Doctor provides travelers with all the information they need to prepare for a trip, to stay healthy while traveling, and to care for health problems that may arise during the journey. In this pocket-sized companion, Dr. Bezruchka covers a tremendous number of topics. Chapters include: Before You Go; Finding Medical Help Abroad; General Health Advice (discussing food, water, hygiene, special environments, and more); Common Illnesses; Less Common Illnesses and Problems; Life-Threatening Emergencies; and The Returning Traveler.

Worthy of Space on Anyone's RV Bookshelf!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

To rephrase Ratty's famous comment to Mole in "The Wind in the Willows": There is nothing- absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in an RV.

By even the most charitable of definitions, I am not what anyone would call "handy" when it comes to fixing things about our sticks-and-bricks house. I am not good at it and I hate taking the time for even the most basic of repairs.

Having said that, I also note that I love puttering around our 5th wheel and could happily spend hours at a time on RV related projects! I guess that's why I think the 10 Minute Tech books are so terrific. More than 600 practical and money-saving ideas in each of the three volumes . . . clever, practical solutions to both everyday challenges and to obscure situations the average RVer will never come across. Each idea presents a practical, real-life solution. Each has been developed by an RVer. The projects are presented in language which is brief, understandable and to the point . . . and the illustrations do a great job of clearing up any questions left unanswered by the text.

The books are conveniently divided into sections on Livability, Safety, Appliances, Maintenance, Automotive, In Camp, Systems, Storage, Towing, Accessories, Sanitation, Doors-Hatches-Handles, Cleaning-Protecting, and Tools. Only a brief perusal is needed to start the creative juices flowing - to send the reader, tool box in hand, off on another project. A fun read when you are nowhere near an RV. An indispensable reference when you are on the road.

Editorial Review:

This book is a compilation of the best tips submitted by readers of the Trailer Life magazine column "10-Minute Tech." These RVers have discovered simple, quick ways to solve small onboard problems; get things to run smoother, quieter, and better; personalize an RV with changes and upgrades; and make life on the road easier.

Knuckles No Longer White 4 out of 5 stars.
88 of 89 people found this review helpful.

Having experienced an aborted take off, a collision whilst taxiing and a drop in altitude which left a stewardess in tears, I feel I'm well equipped to comment on this book.

I'm a 34 year old balanced/sensible male who for some bizarre reason conjures up terrible nightmares before each flight, dwells on them and then allows fear to breed fear - almost to the point of not travelling.

I've tried all sorts - pills, alcohol, more alcohol, but to no avail. Until buying this book I couldn't talk, eat or begin to relax on a plane - even whilst cruising. I used to spend the entire flight waiting for the engines to fail or imagining the pilots were dealing with some sort of emergency (whilst we sat in our seats, oblivious to our imminent demise).

I also knew my fear was irrational, but that made it worse - I felt totally isolated in my own private hell and as there was nothing to do on the plane (or nothing I could do) I let my imagination run riot.

Anyway, to get to the point, something had to be done. I bought this book and it gave me exactly what I wanted - reasons why things go 'bump in the flight', reassurance on the safety/maintainance aspects (I'm no longer waiting for the plane to drop out of the sky. I mean, do people worry about a car just stopping on the motorway - and that's only got one engine!)

I no longer watch the stewardesses and assume that if they're not smiling the planes about to crash. I'm amazed I thought that way now.

Unlike other phobics (and a couple of the reviewers that critisized this book) I've always known there isn't a magic cure
and I'm the one whose got to change the way I think about flying.

I've had to go from knowing it's irrational, but feeling petrified, to knowing it's irrational and actually believing it's the safest form of transport.

I'm not there yet, but I'm slowly winning. In fact on three of my last four flights I've been able to eat and talk !!

Many thanks Debbie - your book was money well spent.

Editorial Review:

Roughly one in five people are afraid of flying. This handbook helps overcome the phobia by explaining how planes fly, their safety features and taking a realistic look at the infinitesimally small risks involved. It also describes suitable relaxation techniques and tips for remaining calm.

Great Read - Mediocre Advice 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book a little while before going to Paris and read it cover to cover, made maps, reference marks on my maps (basically went over board) believing I had invested money in a guide that was somewhat acurate. Sadly, I was mistaken - many of the stores mentioned were either no longer in business or were at another address. Most of the advice was off the cuff and not honest enough to be taken seriously by anyone. It is a fun read, don't get me wrong, but more as fiction than fact. Paris is a living, breathing animal of a city, always changing - i realize now that advice, not military precision shopping, is what I am looking for, and this is not it.

Editorial Review:

The completely updated edition of "Born to Shop Paris" takes you to the City of Light so you can shop till you drop! It's packed with insider tips on where to find the best bargains on everything from perfumes to silk scarves, from antiques to vintage clothing, from CDs to chocolates. Look for all the big names, and a "Best of Paris" chapter that pinpoints exactly where to find the finest. Also included are a handful of our favorite places to stay and eat.

Greetings--

I'm the author of The World Awaits. I haven't posted anything about my books on Amazon in the past but thought I would now in response to the Rodney Douglass review below--one sharply contrary to all other reviews of both editions of The World Awaits. I realize my book isn't for everyone. I have to admit, however, that such a terse and negative quip stings a bit. My apologies to the reviewer, who I assume purchased the book here and feels that it was money poorly spent.

I would be glad to hear from Mr. Douglas regarding the details of the complaint. I can be reached via worldawaits.com. Others wishing to know more about The World Awaits are also encouraged to visit the site, which is structured like the book and includes many excerpts. I welcome all communication.

My thanks to the very many of you who have supported The World Awaits with encouraging feedback. The third edition is in the works.

I welcome email questions and opinions.

Cheers,

Paul Otteson

The Essential little Cruise Book 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am returning this item.
Its a small little book with just general information nothing specific or insightfull.

Not Particularly Useful 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The gist of this book is: "Have a good time, no matter what. Avoid bugging the staff, your problem's not that big." Very little in the way of stuff which could enhance your cruise or keep you out of trouble.

Outdated, simplistic, but useful 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A new edition is due by Fall of 2008, and is needed. This remains a VERY useful guide for first-time cruisers; for those with several cruises under their belt [given the amount of food on a cruise ship, this may be a double entendre] this little book is probably of minimal use.

Editorial Review:

This compact collection of cruise wisdom holds everything you need to know for a perfect vacation at sea. Jim West has logged millions of nautical miles as a cruise director and doles out the answers to cruise questions with wit and style. How can you get the best cabin in your price range? The best table in the dining room? The best service from the crew? Like having your own personal cruise consultant, The Essential Little Cruise Book will help you make the most of your time at sea.

Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures that you absolu 1 out of 5 stars.
32 of 36 people found this review helpful.

This book should be renamed "Don't expect any deals unless your over 60." There were very few deals for anyone younger than 60 and those that were offered were basically common sense. Ask and you'll get discounts, you don't need to spend money on this book to find the bargains.

Unbelievably Good Deals & Great Adventures Over 50 2 out of 5 stars.
24 of 26 people found this review helpful.

My book club had this book on special so I decided to see if I could get it from Amazon cheaper. BOY, am I glad I did! I certainly would not recommend it. I was highly disappointed because there wasn't much for any one under 60 (62 is more like it). Every "deal" she listed is common knowledge. I gave it two stars only because some of the organizations listed...is worth checking out. But now you have the number so save your money for a really good book.

Great deals! 5 out of 5 stars.

For bargain hunters of a "mature age", this is a very complete guide.

Good Deals book 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is very elementary. The 'Good Deals' represented here are not more than most informed 'seniors' are already aware of, like National Parks discounts, AARP discounts, AAA discounts, etc. Not worth the money or the effort to read it.

Editorial Review:

Now completely revised, this proven bestseller is jam-packed with more information than ever about trips, clubs, programs, and perks especially for mature adults.

Really needs an update! 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book does have a lot of helpful information in it. A lot of it is stuff that I already know, having done a lot of traveling, but that's beside the point; almost any traveler would derive lots of great tips from reading this very substantial volume (it's a lot thicker than I expected!)

The problem is, it's now been nearly 8 years since this book was written, and considering that it was published pre-9/11, there is a LOT about travel that has changed since then. A lot of the tips on air travel are now completely irrelevant, especially those on international plane travel. There were quite a few statements that I either knew were incorrect, or had to look up online to verify and found them to be wrong because of the changes since 2001. For example, he encourages people to obtain 48-page passports, but these have not been available in the US for quite some time. He also does not include as many internet resources as he could if he put out a new edition now; the Web has come quite a long way since 2000!

In short, while this book has a lot of information, I do not recommend buying this outdated edition. It's not worth the money given how much of it is no longer valid.

Editorial Review:

Traveler's Tool Kit offers road-tested advice on every aspect of travel, showing how to fill your life with adventure.

In this updated second edition, learn how to create ideal itineraries, find the best deals, choose the right luggage, select the best travel agent or tour operator, overcome language barriers, travel safely, shop wisely, meet friendly folks and much more. Traveler's Tool Kit shows how to save money and have even more memorable journeys.

Rather than listing touristy hotels and restaurants, Traveler's Tool Kit provides the tools you need to take your travel destiny into your own hands - to travel with confidence anywhere on the planet.

Fascinating travel anecdotes and vivid descriptions of far-away places motivate you to hit the road. As Rob Sangster says every week on his public radio broadcast: "The world is waiting. See it for yourself!"
