Editorial Review:

International travel is growing in popularity but sometimes exacts a price. Activities we take for granted - eating, bathing, and going to the bathroom - can range from challenging to risky in unfamiliar territory. Dr. Jane Wilson-Howarth knows plenty about the third of these quandaries, having spent six months in the Himalayas fending off parasites and leeches while doing research. In Shitting Pretty, she takes a humorous, sympathetic approach to one of the most basic of human activities, interweaving anecdotes from fellow travelers with sensible tips and techniques for how to avoid diarrhea, parasites, malaria, and scarier diseases such as encephalitis and pulmonary edema. She covers the basics of how to eat and drink safely, explains symptoms and cures, and also tells why gastrointestinal diseases - the traveler's most common complaint - occur. More than just a how-to (though it is that), the book aims to inspire the traveler to be adventurous and not embarrassed in dealing with foreign toilets, and to pay heed to the fascinating cultural lessons to be learned from the simple act of going to the bathroom.

Very excellent. Extremely detailed and accurate. A book really for serious cruisers. The author apparently has an unusual amount of "real world" experience.

Editorial Review:

The cruising life is a great departure from convention, but making the break can be difficult and maybe even a little frightening. This book is about helping people who want to do serious cruising make the transition, avoid costly mistakes, enjoy a richly rewarding lifestyle and safely experience a sense of freedom they did not know existed.

This book can save your health, maybe even your life! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Jet Smarter is the Encyclopedia Britannica of air travel! Read it before you board an airplane - then pack it in your carry-on. This book can save your health, maybe even your life! There are more dangers in flying than you ever dreamed of. It's all in Jet Smarter. The book is hard-hitting, in depth, comprehensive, full of solutions, entertaining and often witty. It's a behind-the-scenes look from author Diana Fairechild, a savvy former flight attendant and now aviation health expert. Diana's advice on how to deal with flying is practical and useful. Her suggestions really work. It's obvious that she's been there, done that, and fixed that herself. Thanks to Jet Smarter, I can fly without being sick during and after the flight. I can think and work - or play - after a flying instead of going straight to bed to recuperate. Now, instead of dreading the trip, I actually look forward to it.

Editorial Review:

This book can save your health, and maybe even your life. There are dangers in air travel -- some obvious, many hidden. Jet Smarter is a comprehensive book on the hazards (poor air, radiation, pesticides, terrorism, deep vein thrombosis) and hassles (sardine seating, dirty blankets, cheap food, blocked ears, lost luggage, lost sleep) of air travel today.

Most importantly, Jet Smarter is full of solutions, and fun to read.

Ladies: Stay safe, get moving! 5 out of 5 stars.

Ever lie awake in a dark hotel room knowing full well that the 'safety chain' and pushbutton locks on the door couldn't stop a determined six-year-old from coming in, much less a predatory adult? Had your purse snatched on a trip and had to cut your trip short for lack of funds -- or waste two days' worth of prime sightseeing and shopping time trying to replace credit cards and travelers' checks? For women traveling alone or in groups, travel hassles ranging from annoying to outright dangerous can ruin a trip. This does not have to be the case! This book is full of common sense advice that I never would have thought up myself (flimsy chain lock? two rubber doorstops provide security, bring 'em in your carryon bag and safety is yours for approximately $5!), as well as seasoned-traveler insider information that most women have to learn the hard way (photocopy all of your documents, both sides, including photo ID..read why and you'll be glad you did). Reading this book was a pure shot of travel courage for me. If you have ever wanted to take an adventurous travel step but thought, "It would be safer if I did x instead even if it isn't as fun", grab a copy of of Sheila Swan's book and read it cover-to-cover. The book provides a host of steps women can take to increase their safety but uses a 'you can do it' approach rather than relying on scare tactics that too often keep women locked in their hotel rooms at night missing the fun. I don't want to give away any more of the handy tidbits, but as an added bonus I've used some of the tips in navigating my way out of sticky situations in my own city as well. Could *you* tell if someone was setting you up to steal from your purse, or to pick your partner's pocket? I can!

Editorial Review:

Combining anecdotal source material with pra ctical advice, this guide is aimed at women travellers. It i s designed to help them gain confidence and attain a level o f wisdom and competence to be able to travel anywhere in rel ative safety. '

Editorial Review:

Unimpressed with the few packaged tours that she experienced, the author launched upon the research of worldwide independent travel that would ultimately lead to the publication of How to Go Almost Anywhere for Nothing and to a new career as a writer on travel, consumer and women’s issues. She has traveled extensively in Asia, Europe, North Africa and America.

--from the Introduction

I began a quest for information on REALLY cheap travel. I researched an extraordinary amount of published material and then embarked upon many years of travel and research in the United States and abroad. I have now traveled extensively and at very little expense in Asia, North America, Europe and a bit in Africa. The scope of this particular volume will necessarily focus on areas with which I have the greatest familiarity. Southeast Asia remains a favorite because of the low ground costs, and the most detailed information will cover Asian ports of call such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, with some reference to specific destinations within Europe and the United States. My latest major trip was to Morocco, and that country is covered in this edition.

In the United States, the largest port of entry cities will get the most attention, not only because three of my favorite cities fall into this category, but for the benefit of visitors from other lands. The principles outlined herein should pertain to travel almost everywhere and you will be able to apply them with just a little bit of courage and imagination.

Editorial Review:

INTRODUCTION

I know you’re at least thinking about going to Europe, or you wouldn’t be reading this book. Every year thousands of people just like you head to Europe for the first time, and I’d guess all of them want the best trip they can get for the money. This book is intended to help someone taking one of those trips see Europe as cheaply and as enjoyably as possible. The first time I traveled to Europe I just picked up and went, and had to learn the hard way. That trip was a wonderful experience, but it would have been much easier, and certainly less expensive, if someone who had been there before had given me his or her advice. Now, several years and much European travel later, this book contains the advice I give to friends before their first trip.

The very first and most important piece of advice I can give you is one word: GO! If you have the time, and can find the money somewhere, anywhere, just GO! You will not regret it, I promise you. When you walk into St Peter’s in Rome and look down a central aisle longer than two football fields, over the spot where Charlemagne was crowned twelve centuries ago, and then give a glance to the right and see Michelangelo’s Pietá, you will not regret going. When you sit on a beach in the Greek Islands and watch the sun set into the Aegean Sea, and listen to the others on that beach laughing and chatting in six languages as the ouzo and wine get passed around, you will not regret the time and money it took to get there. When you wake up in Paris and have a choice between going to the Eiffel Tower, or the Louvre, or Versailles, or Notre Dame, or the Cathedral at Chartres, or a dozen other wonders only a walk or a train ride away, your trip will seem very cheap indeed. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t try to go as inexpensively as possible; in fact, this book is written in large part to help you do just that. But later in life, when you look back and ask yourself whether it was worth it to go when you did, I promise you the answer will be "Yes." If you have the time and the money, do it. If you have the time, but think you don’t have the money, keep reading, and maybe I can show you that Europe for a few weeks, or for a summer, can be a lot cheaper than you think.

And, if the whole process of going seems like too much of a bother, too much planning and time, remember the following: by spending a summer in Europe you will visit countries that are both much older and very different from your own, and gain a new perspective on your own country as a result. You will meet people who happily live lives very different from your own. And you will see some of the greatest creations of the human mind and spirit: legendary wonders of art and architecture that form a large part of the collective heritage of the human race. That’s why you’re going to Europe, not to hunt for the cheapest hostel or the best rate of exchange. Remember this during all the dry talk about money and packs and all that practical stuff.

Editorial Review:

In Latin America, travelers may encounter such diverse settings as laid-back coastal resorts and traditional mountain villages, while elsewhere, the cultural expectations of these countries can be worlds away. For instance: -In Mexico, crooking the index finger to say "come here" and the American "okay" sign are considered obscene. -Photographing military installations in Mexico, Cuba, or Paraguay could land you in jail---or at least lead to your forfeiting your film to the police. -If you wear the clothing of the indigenous people in Peru, they will think you're making fun of them. -State-run "official" restaurants aren't your best bet in Cuba---seek out paladares, small restaurants set up in private homes. -You shouldn't be surprised if you don't get silverware in the Belize countryside. Tortillas are often used in place of spoons. -Bikinis are not acceptable on Ecuadorean beaches. -Giving a Chilean yellow roses signifies scorn or contempt. Fully updated and expanded, The Travelers' Guide to Latin American Customs and Manners includes advice and information on daily life in Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Little Usable Information 2 out of 5 stars.
12 of 15 people found this review helpful.

While I had expected to spend time finding out about the RV lifestyle from those that had been there, there was very little
in the way of "how to" advice. Travelogs are fine for those
interested in finding places to go which comprises most of
the information in this book. Two pages on finances can hardly
be said to be useful for the "details" needed to take up a life
of full-time RVing. Once equipment technicalities entered the conversation, Ron would be better advised to seek help with the questions almost everyone has about how things operate rather than discuss how mechanically inclined he is not.
I don't know what I was expecting but with all the promotion this book has received, my expectations were higher than learning of relatives, friends, and wildflowers. There are others who full-time RV who have written on the internet with more information in two pages than could be found in several pages of this offering. Sorry, but I'll keep searching for the information that was expected.
